Not too sure about turning off an emotion. Being able to adjust or fine-tune - now, that might interesting. Or not.

i can't remember when i quit smoking but it was during this thread, months ago. at the time i thought that this thread would be a good way of keeping track of my progress, maybe it would help me. As it turns out, i haven't been to this website in months and months (still single and still lonely) and i can't remember when i quit or how long it's been.

Canucks should be fine this year. So far, the signings look decent, there’s a lot of potential there. no one’s gone that’ll be missed or that we were expecting to re-sign.

Was hoping there’d be a trade for the twins, but that won’t likely happen if Sundin signs. If he turns the Canucks’ offer down, then expect most anything to happen.

As for Sundin, if I had to bet I’d say he’s going to come our way – it’s just too much money to turn down at this point in his career, plus there’s the bonus of playing with fellow Swedes like the Sedins and Ohlund.

Been a while since I checked out the forums. – forgot about this thread, almost even forgot that I quit smoking! Cold turkey and zero-slippage so far, but, still have strong urges sometimes. I’m sure it’ll all pass. I’m done with it…

Maybe I should change my smoking thingy on my profile? I dunno, I don’t pay attention to anything here but the forums, and, lately – not even those….

Earth Day Celebration
Posted: 4/29/2008 12:38:20 AM
You really want to have an impact? It’s easy. Pass a law, enforce it, planet-wide – speed limit of 10 miles per hour for all vehicles. Do you have any idea how many lives would be saved? Hundreds of thousands per year. Hundreds. Of thousands. That’s a lot.

Okay, it aint gonna help the Earth, but – the Earth don’t care! It would save an awful lot of lives. Geez, at ten miles per hour we wouldn’t have to worry so much about impaired drivers! But, it wouldn’t be very practical, would it? we just couldn’t live our lives that way. We can all buy dimmer, duller light bulbs and go around plugging in and plugging out and plugging in and plugging out and, ‘honey, did you unplug the coffeepot?’ ‘f*ck, no. I gotta work in the morning!’ ‘I know – but, think of the Earth! And the lives we’ll save.’

But, honestly, I just can’t live my life that way…

Mandatory pre employment and inccidental drug and alcohol testing. Is this legaly justifiable?
Posted: 4/29/2008 12:25:36 AM
Arbitrators can be such a funny lot. Seriously.

‘Rights’ should apply to all regardless of circumstance or addiction, etc. one shouldn’t lose their ‘rights’ just cuz they like to smoke a doob.

However, if you’re becoming intentionally impaired and then heading off to work, then, certainly some price needs to be paid. There should be repercussions – suspension, firing, fining, social ostracization, maiming, public ridicule, what-have-you and etc – but, we all have ‘rights.’ You don’t lose your ‘rights,’ you may lose some freedom, a few privileges UPON CONVICTION, but, you don’t lose your ‘rights.’ That just wouldn’t be right. Right?

Earth Day Celebration
Posted: 4/28/2008 1:10:46 AM
Xavery – yeah, I’m pretty serious. The Earth don’t care.
The Earth will be fine without us. We aren’t hurting the Earth at all, not at all.
we may be making things unpleasant for ourselves, but, the Earth don’t care.
We may be, maybe, able to make the earth uninhabitable for people, or animals, but,
the Earth don’t care. It got along fine before any of us came along, for billions of
years it did alright.

I think people should be more honest – we need to make changes for ourselves.
And for future generations. It isn’t the planet that needs saving – it’s us.
The planet doesn’t need clean air – we do. The planet doesn’t care how hot
it is, or isn’t, it doesn’t care about the weather or the future – we do.

Nice post from Delarosa (above) – let’s assume, for the sake of argument
or discussion, that the human race did indeed once become almost
extinct sometime in the past. Did the Earth care? Did the Earth almost
become “extinct?” Did it effect or impact the Earth at all in any manner
at all? I doubt it.

It’s true, the Earth don’t care. Not only that – but, we can’t hurt it. it’s been here for over four billion years and been through a lot of sh*t during that time, some of it much worse then anything we have ever or could ever do to it and it’s still fine. Seriously, we’re not hurting the planet, but, we could be hurting ourselves, we are the ones that need saving. The planet’s fine and it’ll be fine with or without us.

Still hanging in there, not sure how long it’s been. Three weeks? Still get urges here and there, at least once a day. Oh well. It is nice that the smokes are now under cover in the stores, I think it helps. I don’t think I’m actually going to save any money, I’ll just waste it some other way.

I think it’s been two weeks now. I think. No cheating yet, but, sometimes the urge really hits me. Still. Lucky for me, I don’t know any other cigar smokers or I probably would have caved in by now. I am starting to notice that however strong the urge might be at times, it doesn’t last for long. Hopefully, it won’t be long before I don’t think about it all.

Hang in there sponge. Remember, when you fall off the wagon, it’s okay to just jump right back on.

I’ve never allowed smoking in my vehicle and smoking is only permitted ‘downstairs’ at home and having familiar, comfortable pre-established ‘no smoking’ zones is certainly helping.

Someone mentioned today that smokes no longer being on display in the stores must be helping and, ya know, I have to admit that I think it has made things a little easier. It’s been 5 or 6 days now, cold turkey and not even one teeniest, tiniest hint of a slip, but, man, I spend a lot of time thinking about it – it just sort of sneaks up on me. I wake up and one of the first thoughts in my head is, ‘oh yeah, I quit smoking.’

Can you make love to someone you are not in love with?
Posted: 4/6/2008 2:37:19 AM
It’s a matter of passion, prelude and foreplay – you can have a quickie with someone you are deeply in love with, but, it’s only sex, you’re not ‘making love’ – making love is just sex with passion, making love is just sex with emotion; however momentary or fleeting or transitional (or illusionary) that passion or emotion might be.

Is there a song that describes you?
Posted: 4/6/2008 1:31:50 AM
A song that describes you – I’m still standing – reminded me of Winters’ Still Alive and Well. Neither necessarily a song that would describe me, but, their sentiment is sort of the same and I’ve had the feeling…

There is no song that describes me, no theme, no anthem, but, there has definitely been a soundtrack to my life.

The artists I’ve felt most closely connected to – Dylan, Springsteen, Young and Van Morrison.

Crashing a Church Service

Let’s see, we have:
Sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse
Medical experiments, forced sterilization
Disruption and destruction of families and communities
Forced assimilation
Intentional destruction of language and culture
Murder – yes, murder
And, oh yeah, cover-ups and denial of responsibility

So, what is the best course of action? I’m not certain, but, certainly some admission of guilt and acceptance of the role played must occur before forgiveness and respect can come into play?

Vilifying the descendents of the accused? These acts for which the group in question seeks recompense and closure occurred within our lifetime.

The ‘church’ as a (supposed) moral authority has much to answer for regardless of any good they may have done or may be doing elsewhere.

Is it best to forgive and love others despite their flaws and failures? That depends on the flaws and failures. And to forgive and love does not excuse bad behavior, debts must still be paid.

Cute Animals in Advertizing
Posted: 3/31/2008 9:22:11 AM
No animals in this commercial – I only saw this once, with a cpl friends – we couldn’t believe it and have never seen it since, nor has anyone that we’ve ever mentioned it to. It was so unexpected and shocking that we were all speechless for a cpl seconds and then we rewound and watched it again. And again and again – forwards, backwards, in slow mo and at high speed. We’re so twisted that all we could do was laugh.

As I remember it:
It’s a store of some type with very high ceilings and a woman is standing on a ladder hanging banners. The ladder isn’t quite tall enough and the woman is reaching up and stretching out. a second woman comes along and asks the first if she needs help and the first lady says, no. the woman on the floor starts talking to the camera. In the background you see the first woman fall from the ladder. She lands dead center on top of a glass table-high display case. She goes right through it. it looked awful, the impact was incredible. The woman on camera runs over to the fallen woman who manages to stand up. There’s a lot of blood and she looks positively stunned. That’s it. I don’t know what was being advertised, but, at this point a logo or something similar fills the screen and there was a voice over for the product or organization. It may have been some kind of insurance or safety awareness thing, but, I don’t remember.

Anybody else seen this one?

Church Members Arrested during Easter Mass for Challenging Archbishop
Sunday, March 23, 2008 2:00 pm PST

Four young Catholics were arrested and dragged out of Easter Mass by police this morning after they challenged statements by Archbishop Raymond Roussin about aboriginal protestors outside Holy Rosary Catholic Church in downtown Vancouver.

Ellen and Tatyana Dobrowolski, Josh Regnier and Vikram Uchida were assaulted by police in their pews after Ellen, a student at Simon Fraser University, stood to dispute comments from the Archbishiop contained in a "pastoral letter" from him being read to the congregation by priest Glen Dion.

"I began shaking with anger when he read that letter. I couldn't just sit there with the Archbishop saying such lies, attacking the native people outside and saying they were making up the stories about children being killed in the residential schools. So I got up and I said it wasn't true, that the Archbishop shouldn't be trying to discredit people who have the courage to stand up and name what happened to them.

"I was beginning to say that our church should admit what it did, that people should make up their own minds and go speak to the protestors, and then I was grabbed by that police sergeant. He yanked me by my arm and dragged me across the person next to me, then hauled me and the others right out of church."

Outside Holy Rosary, residential school survivors and other protestors welcomed the four churchgoers as they were "warned" and then released by police, several dozen of whom blocked the entrances to the church.

You can shut off your Daytime Running Lights as long as your vehicle is parked, you just have to apply the parking brake before you start the vehicle. The lights will come back on when you release the parking brake. If you park and wish to leave your vehicle running but don’t want the lights left on, just shut the vehicle off, apply the parking brake and restart.

Passage Luke 6:37
37Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

Pretty good advice, but, the context should not be forgotten. Jesus’ claim was that the END was near, within the lifetime of those to whom he spoke, and that GOD would deal with injustice and if he had been right (a cpl thousand years later demonstrates that he was WRONG) then people could have afforded to forgive and not judge because god would take care of things for them WITHIN their lifetime.

But, Jesus was WRONG. He was MISTAKEN. His advice of turning the other cheek was impractical and, although well intentioned, not viable or realistic.

Don’t be afraid to judge, don’t be afraid to condemn. Forgive if it is in your nature to do so. Don’t be afraid to question the teachings and philosophy of Christ, he was only a man and he was often wrong.

Jesus said to repay evil with kindness (the golden rule), but, a much wiser and more realistic philosopher (pre-dating Jesus) once asked, if we repay evil with kindness, then, how do we repay good? the answer - repay kindness with kindness and evil with justice (the Bronze or Brass rule). Jesus never advised this, it was beyond him. give no credit when none is due.

Xavery asked this, “BURNING QUESTION - Would the protesting group be there if they had not attracted media attention last week?”

Yes, they would have been there and had announced their plans to do so in advance. The ‘protest’ that’s been under discussion occurred at more than one B.C. church. Churches in Toronto were also struck and I know there were plans to hit churches in Winnipeg, but, I can’t recall hearing if these had occurred.

Yes, the Vancouver protest group was led by a white guy, but, the claim is that he was acting the authority of the Squamish bands hereditary Chief. Yes, I know the Band disavowed the protest group. It seems there may be some divide and disagreement between the band’s hereditary Chief and the elected Chief.

Here’s what the protest leader had to say about last weeks protest:

In response to claims that our action last Sunday "disrupted" services at Holy Rosary cathedral, and that an element of the Squamish band leadership disagrees with our action, I wish to make the following statement:

1. At no time have I claimed or attempted to "speak for the Squamish nation", as Squamish band chief Bill Williams has alleged. In participating in the memorial vigil at Holy Rosary Cathedral last Sunday, March 16, I have spoken and acted solely under the authority of hereditary Squamish Chief Kiapilano and not as a spokesperson for the Squamish Nation. My aim was and is to speak to my own Euro-Canadian culture and its churches, and to urge them to take responsibility for the deaths of chidlren in their Indian residential schools.

2. Despite the distorted portrayal of our action by some media as a "disruption" of the mass at Holy Rosary, in reality our action was peaceful, respectful, and an integrated part of the service itself following a verbal welcoming of us by presiding priest Rev. Glen Dion. Lasting barely ten minutes, our action consisted of a silent procession to the front of the church, where we were welcomed by Rev. Dion and where we stood in silent prayer. We then left the church sanctuary, led by aboriginal elders and Chief Kiapilano, at which point the entire congregation stood as we passed. At no time did we slow the progression of the mass or interrupt its normal functioning. Further, at no point prior to or during our action did police or church staff interfere with our action, or warn us not to enter the church sanctuary.

3. We welcome the public discussion generated by our action, which was taken solely because of the refusal of Archbishop Raymond Roussin of Holy Rosary Cathedral to answer our Letter of January 13, 2008, asking him to help identify the burial sites of children who died in local Catholic Indian Residential Schools. To resolve this issue amicably, we are willing to meet with Archbishop Roussin at any time to discuss our concerns. Failing such a meeting, our actions will continue. We invite all aboriginal people and members of the Squamish Nation, along with Chief Bill Williams, to join us in this effort to bring home the children who died in Indian residential Schools, and to bring to justice those persons responsible for their deaths.

Ah, but, wouldn’t passing the test have demonstrated an understanding of the subject and not an acceptance of the principles? Doesn’t failing the test leave an impression of not understanding that which you claim to reject? It seems a silly excuse for failure…

Not meant as a personal affront, just an observation.

"I'll give you a million dollars, for one night with your wife/longtime girlfriend'...how would you feel about it?

Well, I’d wonder why he was offering to pay me – she’d be the one doing the work. But, if he was offering the money to her, I’d stand by her and back her up whether she decided to take up the offer or not. It’s a pretty easy way to make a million bucks. I’d be more concerned about how the money could effect the relationship then I would be about how she earned it.

Ever have a crush on a cartoon?

I can’t believe I just read this whole thread! Hilarious, but, here’s my picks:

Vampirella; Kishimoto from Gantz; The Major from Ghost in the Shell; Cowboy Bebop’s Faye gets an honorable mention…

This thread reminded me of Battle of the Comic Book Babes, hosted by IGN. 64 comic book babes facing off in elimination rounds, winner decided by online voters, until one was voted Hottest. The final four were Emma Frost, Fairchild, Rogue and Lara Croft. Emma Frost emerged the winner.

I am not a geek.

nucks vs oil

Well. First in the division is definitely up for grabs. Canucks and Flames play each other three more times before the season ends, including the last game of the season.

The west is pretty much wrapped up as far as which teams will be in the playoffs – four teams from our division will place and the first round will see two of those teams facing off against each other – Minnesota, Canucks and Flames – whoever wins the division will face off against one of those other teams.

Go Canucks!

POF Forum posts in court

I’ve been a participating member on a discussion forum for several years generating posts possibly in the thousands. Boardreader found 15,000+ results when I entered my username (the one I use n that other forum), but, I got tired of looking for anything that was mine or where I was mentioned – didn’t see nothing.

One should always be mindful of the legal consequences when publicly posting their thoughts and opinions or when using someone else’s words. I learned long ago from that other forum that people are responsible for their words and there are vindictive people out there. we had a forum ‘war’ (about ten yrs ago, mind you) People’s identities were tracked, computers hacked, phone calls made to employers, mean spirited stories invented and spread throughout cyberspace, personal information posted online, all kinds of nasty stuff.

I tend to ‘hide’ many aspects of my personality and character by adopting a particular style or voice when writing and to not say too much about things that I don’t really know much about or understand and overly personal details are best left as hints, like a cloud or a veil.
