The Metropolitan Transportation Authority runs the commuter rail, subway and bus systems in the New York City area. You can find fare info and system maps at their website here: http://www.mta.info/
To travel between NYC and New Jersey, the best way is New Jersey Transit: http://www.njtransit.com
To travel between NYC and Boston by rail, you need to take Amtrak (the sole intercity rail service in the U.S.): http://www.amtrak.com
Hope this helps, good luck and enjoy your trip!

There you go. If he's "too busy" socializing with others, so much so that he basically ignores you for 4 days, then you are not a priority for him. You best move on and keep on fishing.

You have gone on two dates with the guy so you must already have learned some basics about each other, such as what he does for a living.
From there you can make a judgment call: Is "busy at work" a legitimate excuse? If his job really does demand so much attention and energy, then maybe it's legit. If you know for a fact that his job couldn't possibly occupy his attention for an entire weekend, then he's not into you and putting you off.

Suggestion for profiles: Animal-friendly (yes/no)
Posted:

I did a search for "pet" and "animal" and nothing came up, so...
When browsing profiles, I noticed a lot of women have dogs or cats or other pets, and are looking for a guy who is animal-friendly.
How about putting a field in the profile section for guys to select whether or not they are animal-friendly?

I'm not suggesting the guy stuff the gum down her throat. Just offer it to her and see if she's amenable to the idea, if she is sympathetic and considerate to his discomfort. Not sure how that would qualify as "controlling."
Sorry, but that's the most pitiful non-constructive put-down attempt I've ever seen on here. :-D

Here's a gift idea... Try buying her some nicotine gums or patches and see if she's willing to stop lighting it up when you are with her. That way, everybody wins.

FYI, the majority of Asian Americans who have been here for more than 3 generations are the Japs.
Wasn't it the Chinese? I thought the first influx of Chinese to the U.S. are as laborers during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad right after the Civil War, which is why San Francisco has a Chinatown since the mid-1800s.
I remember back to the Japan-bashing in the 1980s and cringe to think what the near future will bring, what with China becoming the kind of economic giant Japan was back in the 1980s.
Here's an interesting question to ponder: What effect the Beijing Olympics this year will have: Will it show a different face of the Chinese to the rest of the world to soften the stereotypes, or will it just harden them instead?

I had both of my impacted lower wisdom teeth surgically cut out under just local anesthesia. It took 2 hours and 6 carpules of Lidocaine, but I didn't feel anything aside from my classmate pushing and pulling and the sound of the teeth cracking apart. If you can get past the weird noises there really is no reason to spend all that extra money to undergo sedation or general anesthesia for routine dental procedures.

Income/Car Status

I think the admins should do the following:
- Add one more choice to the "Car Status" field: "I live in a city/use public transit"
- Get rid of the Income Level. It is truly one of those NOYFB things. Or at least change it to: "Job status," with the following choices:
1) Employed.
2) Retired.
3) On Disability.
4) Self-Employed.
5) Looking.
6) Slacker leeching off mom/dad.
7) Looking for a sugar daddy/sugar mommy.

It's straightforward. You aren't ready for another relationship and there's nothing wrong with telling your friend that, and doing it face-to-face is probably the most sincere way of doing it.
Definitely end it before he deploys. Nothing kills a guy worse than getting a "Dear John" letter/email while on combat duty in a war zone.

Personally, I would be more comfortable discussing things that are very personal to me 1-on-1 with a woman I'm dating rather than sharing en-masse with a group. Revealing too much information to too many people have a way of coming back to bite you in the posterior later on.

No, she needs to make that important decision apart from whether or not some guy will like her, that's all I'm saying, AND IT SEEMS YOU ARE SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING IN A MUCH MORE LOQUATIOUS MANNER. Way to go, Mr. embellisher.

Don't let your decision to further your education be made by whether or not a guy will like you.
You go to college to better yourself, to learn about a field you find interesting and want a career in. Not to impress a guy.
Though you will probably meet a lot of guys in college if you attend a co-ed school.

Would you date Britney Spears?
Posted:

I think the love of a good man would help Britney want to change her life around.
Sadly, I think no man can ever hope to change her. Britney Spears grew up in that alternate (un)reality of child actors/actresses with all of the excesses she is used to. The only way she will change is if she hits rock bottom and spend some time there, and I don't think she is anywhere near that yet.
Personally, I don't see myself ever dating someone with so many issues-- If I want that much psychosis in my life, I'd rather go to medical school and become a psychiatrist.

What a load of crap.
Thing is, a lot of guys are raised to show respect and restraint and not be too forward. These well-behaved men are the ones who are least likely to make that first move.
A woman who makes the first move creates the opportunity for the well-heeled guy to "pursue" the woman-- In making the first move she lets him know he at least has a chance with her.

Need winter first-date ideas!

Heya Eazk,
Yeah December was definitely not a good month to go on dates.. We both had obligations to spend the holidays with our respective families, so it was hard to find days on which we could get together. (In my case it was really nutty because my extended family is very multicultural-- There are Jews, Christians and Buddhists in my extended family of relatives, LOL).
I did do a bit of Monday-morning quarterbacking but I'm not sure where something might have taken a wrong turn. The third and last date right before Christmas I thought we had a great time-- We both had lots to talk about, the walking/driving tour was great, she loved the food at that restaurant we went to. I was on my very best behavior and as impeccable with my table manners and posture as I could-- The very model of honesty and decorum. She knew I enjoyed spending time with her and wasn't pursuing her for sex (though I did want romance). Just about the only thing that I did differently was how I dressed (casual as she requested). We parted company and agreed to wait until after New Years to see if we can get together again. I tried to keep in touch with her via email, not wishing to intrude by phone while she was spending time with family.
I was really hoping it would work out, because I had been so lucky up to then-- She was attractive, within my geographical area, reasonably close in age (she's 5 years younger than me), and she actually contacted me first when I've only been on POF for a few weeks. I thought our dates went fairly well and I enjoyed spending time with her. I think the odds of something like this happening again for me here on POF would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 in 12 million. :-P
I kind of wished she would at least email me back and tell me straight up that she'd rather not see me anymore. Ah well, it's probably a good thing for me to quit while my dignity is still intact, LOL.

Perhaps this method actually works. Does it?
I think it does work, but not for the reason you think.
Having looked at the forums for the past several months, almost every day one would see a guy post one of those "why do women delete the email I sent them without even reading it?" threads that are promptly deleted for repetition. Faced with such futility, it's understandable why some guys would rather have a woman contact them first.
Speaking from personal experience, I have never gotten a reply out of the dozens of initial-contact emails I sent to women on POF, and I gave up doing that after a few weeks. On the other hand, I have had better luck with women contacting me first after reading my profile. It makes a lot more sense than wasting hours emailing women who just deletes emails without even the courtesy of reading them first. There is a difference between laziness versus refusing to continue with a futile endeavor. :-D

Update 1/10/08:
Eazk asked me for an update so I figure I'd post it here in my old thread..
Yep, I got a second and a third date with this lovely lady:
Second date a few weeks before Christmas, I went for something fancy-- An upscale restaurant my brother-in-law recommended. It was a bit of a flop because she didn't like the food. (oops!) But she thought enough of me to agree to a third date. She jokingly chided me for always dressing up with nice slacks and a necktie, so I agreed to show up for a third date in jeans / casual.
Third date we met up for a nice jaunt around her part of Long Island the weekend before Christmas-- we both loved some of the more scenic parts of Long Island, and went on a driving/walking tour of the shorline around the Great South Bay near Robert Moses State Park, and saw some houses with crazy overboard Christmas lighting displays. Had a nice meal with her afterwards and thought we had a great time.
After that date, she mysteriously clammed up. I sent her emails asking if she wanted to do stuff on the weekends, but no answer. After three unanswered emails I didn't press the issue any further (didn't want to appear clingy).
I still see her popping on every couple of days here on POF.. I guess she probably wasn't into me. Maybe it was me in jeans (I do have some extra pounds and was honest about it-- Maybe not being able to fill out denim well is a dealbreaker for her, haha.)
Ah well. I thought I had something nice going there, but I guess not. I'm not one to dwell over what-could-have-beens so I'll move on.

Is anyone ever willing to just be friends?
Posted:
1/8/2008 5:49:02 PM
Platonic friendships take time, effort and energy that a guy would rather invest in a romantic relationship instead.
Would a guy groom himself and dress up to look presentable, plan an evening and make reservations, and travel to a fancy restaurant to meet a woman who told him a few dates ago that she just wants to be a platonic friend... Or would he rather invest that kind of effort with someone else who is a romantic prospect instead?
I think the answer is as obvious as a 2x4 upside the head. :-D

Simple no-frills digital cameras cost as little as $20 these days and are perfectly fine for taking some quick self-portraits.
The most frequent complaint about on-line dating is of course misrepresentation, when the guy turns out to look nothing like how he described himself on-line. That's the first thing to suspect when someone goes to great lengths with excuses on why he has no photos of himself.

Anybody that disrespects your family is disrespecting you. Thats one huge red flag right there.
Then there is his rudeness-- Huge red flag #2. If you think he's rude now, wait until he doesn't have to woo you anymore to get what he wants.
And he is "determined to catch you cheating"-- Red flag #3. Sounds like a controlling personality with the potential to turn abusive (mentally and verbally, not necessarily physically, although that is a possibility as well).

Black holes...help!
Posted:
1/6/2008 2:50:34 PM
to Ravenstar:
The way I understand it, black holes are not where matter and energy are reduced to nothing. Matter and energy are compressed to a point of infinite density (i.e. the singularity), and that is definitely not nothing-- It still has mass, which is why it still has gravity.
Remember a black hole still has mass and spin, just like a regular star. A black hole weighing 20 solar masses exerts exactly the same gravitation as a Main Sequence 20-solar-mass star, and objects orbiting them obey the same orbital mechanics. Falling into a 20-solar-mass Main Sequence star will kill you just as dead as falling into a 20-solar-mass black hole. :-)
A star needs a certain amount of mass to form a black hole at the end of its life. Not heavy enough, the star can't collapse enough to compress down to a singularity. Those smaller stars become neutron stars or white dwarves instead, depending on how massive they are.

Moving at the speed of light makes time expand (i.e. slow down) compared to the time observed by someone travelling at a slower speed. Time will still go forward, but slower.

The End Of The Universe
Posted:
1/5/2008 10:06:07 PM
The universe "appears" to be expanding. But in order for it to actually be expanding you must ASSUME time is NOT expanding. Where is the evidence that time in linear? Is it logical to assume only 3 dimensions of a 4 dimensional cosmos are expanding? Or is it more logical to assume all 4 dimensions are expanding? Remember, void of any evidence to the contrary it's always more reasonable to assume similicity over complexity. The scientific community has abandoned this "logic" in favor of "faith" when it comes to the Big Bang unfortunately.
Not sure where you are getting the idea that the scientific community assumes time is "linear". Especially since the further away a galaxy is from the observer here in the Milky Way, the faster it seems to be moving away from us (higher redshift the further the object, appearing to be moving at a significant fraction of c, i.e. relativistic speeds). Relativistic time dilation and compression for the observer and observed is involved here for the very distant objects.
I think a better person to discuss this with would be the folks who ran the HDF and HUDF observations because they can explain the observed relativistic factors better than I can. Contact information here if you wish to follow up with them: http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2004/07/text/ (scroll to the bottom of the page for the project officers' email and phone numbers.)
Just don't assume that whoever you are talking to are making assumptions you assume they are assuming, LOL. ;-)
No "center" of the expansion has been observed. And there has been no evidence of an outer "border" to the cosmos either. Sure, we can only observe up to the event horizon (the known universe), but all evidence indicates the cosmos continues on indefinitely over the event horizon.
Remember what you said about time not being "linear?" One needs to take into account the relativistic factors of galaxies further away appearing to move faster due to the great distances and speeds involved. If there is an observer in every galaxy, each observer will see the galaxy furthest from him to be moving faster than those galaxies closer to him. In such a situation I'm not sure you can actually observe a "center" of expansion, because the center of expansion will appear to be where the observer is located. Sounds to me like you can observe a center of expansion ONLY if time is "linear" (i.e. non-relativistic).

My understanding of nature and t he cosmos however does not allow me to accept that it is a one way street. While it may be expanding on our side of town it is most likely contracting on someone elses side of town simultaneously.
If that's your hypothesis, then you need to design an experiment to test it. Go forth and see if you can find evidence of the existence of "someone else's side of town" and present your observational data.
Speaking on currently available evidence, anything beyond the observable expanding universe is conjecture at this point, of course.

Is Matter a form of Energy?
Posted:
1/5/2008 2:10:34 PM
Hence which c do we use?
There is only one definition in physics for c.
299,792,458 m/s .
c in physics is defined as the speed at which all electromagnetic waves propagate
in vacuum.
That's a constant value. There are no other values for "c" in physics.
The mass-energy equivalence equation is very specific on the relationship it is mathematically describing. You don't use any other number in place of c.

The End Of The Universe
Posted:

The belief that we are in an expanding universe and that is the way the "whole" universe works seems to me sort of strange. (one side of the equation).
Keep in mind that the expanding universe has been confirmed by very simple telescope observations, first noticed by Edwin Hubble back in the 1920s.
When Hubble looked at distant galaxies and looked at the spectra of the light coming from those galaxies, they appeared redder than expected. The redder appearance is due to the doppler effect of the object moving away from you. And this has been true of 99% of all the galaxies observed (the remaining 1% of galaxies that do not have this doppler effect are those in our Local Group such as Andromeda, which our Milky Way is directly interacting with gravitationally and will collide with in about 2 billion years.).
If the vast majority of galaxies we can see in our telescopes have a red shift, that means they are moving away from us. Which means the universe is expanding.
And you can make one more logical deduction from this observation: If the universe is expanding, then at some time in the past everything in the universe must have been a lot smaller, which meant the universe was probably born from a Big Bang explosion.

Yep, I agree with you that after the white dwarves and neutron stars radiate away all of their residual energy, they do become unobservable by direct means (the only signature left would be their gravitation, plus maybe the planetary nebula around a white dwarf if it hasn't totally dispersed or isn't illuminated by nearby stars). The only thing is, through observations we do know at what rates they radiate their residual energy, and if I remember correctly, the universe isn't old enough (just 15 billion years at the most) for even the oldest white dwarf or neutron star to even come close to exhausting their residual energy at their observed rates of energy radiation. (i.e. it will take a few dozen billion years for a typical neutron star to lose all of its rotational momentum and stop spinning and emitting.)
That's my understanding anyway.. I can be wrong, and I'm always on the lookout for current research data which more often than not turns up unexpected results. :-)
BTW I think the first brown dwarf discovered was confirmed in 1995... Not totally sure though. I think it was confirmed through observations with the Hubble Space Telescope.

The End Of The Universe

I mean there could be trillions of planets out there and same with stars and star remnants which naturally cotain enormous amounts of matter (M.A.C.H.O.S- like White Dwarfs, the elusive Brown Drawfs, Neutron Stars and Black Holes ect), so clearly in that sense, most of the Universe, and the matter in it have not been observed.
Just for the record...
White dwarfs and neutron stars are NOT "dark matter" because they do emit energy and can be observed directly. White dwarfs still emit residual radiation as it cools off, and neutron stars emit highly-focused beams of radiation at regular intervals due to their spin and magnetic fields (which is why neutron stars are called "pulsars"). Brown dwarves are also sometimes directly observable because many of them have an IR signature, which IR telescopes like Spitzer can pick up. (I think one of the ongoing projects using Spitzer right now is a hunt for brown dwarves).
As far as the common definition of "dark matter" goes, it's the astronomer's term for "missing mass". We can observe gravitational effects exerted by something around distant galaxies, but we can't see what it is. "dark energy" refers to the mysterious force that is accelerating the expansion of the universe, since the universe is not expanding at a constant rate or slowing down due to gravity, but it is actually speeding up.
Unfortunately, we don't know much about those two "dark" things at the moment. I think we might get some more clues when the James Webb Space Telescope finally launches in a few years.

Is Matter a form of Energy?

alchemy led to chemistry... the ideas that chemistry was originally founded upon gained its imeptus in alchemy.. and what the alchemists of old conceptualized- turning base metal into gold- was realized.... how is that incompatible?
Just for the record, chemistry has NEVER succeeded in turning base metal into gold.
Only nuclear physics has done this (transmutation of elements by bombardment of a base element with high-energy subatomic particles in a particle accelerator), and this has not resulted in mass production of gold from lead nor realized the wealth/economic gain alchemists were after in their attempts to make gold. Only small amounts of radioactive gold can be synthesized this way, with limited applications in fields such as nuclear medicine.

teeth whiteners, do they work?

I'm a dentist and here's the lowdown:
Crest Whitestrips are indeed good. It uses carbamide peroxide (which is a slow releaser of Hydrogen Peroxide, the agent that actually does the bleaching).
Carbamide peroxide is good for bleaching natural tooth structure-- It actually penetrates through the enamel and oxidizes stains in the dentin to make the tooth whiter. Because it penetrates into the dentin, it will cause some irritation to the pulp (the nervous tissue) inside your tooth, which is why some people feel sensitivity after using it.
Carbamide peroxide bleaching will NOT work on fillings, crowns, veneers, or teeth with tetracycline (antibiotic) stains, and it is best to make sure you have no active tooth decay (cavities) before you use it. It will NOT work on surface stains either (like from smoking, coffee or tea)-- Those are best removed with a scaler/cavitron during your regular 6-month cleanings.
DO NOT OVERUSE!!
If you bleach excessively, the carbamide peroxide will oxidize and destroy the collagen fibers holding your tooth together and cause the enamel to crumble. Follow the frequency instructions on the White Strip package carefully and if you feel bad sensitivity, don't use it as often.
Swishing raw 5% hydrogen peroxide does NOT help. It does not stay on a tooth long enough to penetrate into dentin. That's why a time-release formula like carbamide peroxide is better.
Hope this helps.

Some people are just laid-back or happy with where their life is.
If I have to venture a guess, I would say you will NEVER change that guy in a million years if he's comfortable with his present situation and not a "Type A" self-motivating sort of person. This I think is especially true with guys who are past their 30's-- It's hard to motivate them to alter their lifestyles significantly after that if that's what they've grown accustomed to.
Just be forewarned that if you decide to try, it might very well be a futile effort. JMHO.

LOL, I've taken care of such patients while on oral surgery rotation in a hospital. It's no fun walking around with a radically re-sected mandible (i.e. half of your face cut off) to clear the margins of the tumor and be restricted to a liquid diet and an electronic vocalizer to speak for you for the rest of your life.
Frankly I'd rather be bored to death than to go through that.

As I mentioned in my previous post, he is a heavy smoker. There is a link between smoking and bad teeth.
This is not a case of too poor to go to the dentist case here. This is a case of abusing your body.
Exactamundo-- Smoking is one of the chief causes of gum disease. The chemicals in cigarette smoke causes blood vessel constriction in the mucosal tissues in the mouth and decreases the gums' abilities to fight off the naturally-occurring bacteria in our oral cavity. The increasing bacterial load accelerates destruction of the gum tissue and underlying bone, causing them to recede, exposing tooth roots and making them loose.
Not to mention the heightened risk of developing cancer in the oral cavity, the pharynx and the lungs... Plus the ugly tar stains on teeth and the ashtray smell it leaves on one's hair and clothes.
There are a lot of incentives to quit this nasty habit.. Problem is nicotine is so addictive some people just can't kick it no matter what they do.

What if a guy worked a 40 hour job and basically came home and passed out on two hours of sleep for several years... getting up to go to school each day and paying everything he could on his own, trying to get a 'better job' and well, sometimes did neglect his teeth?
Bad teeth through neglect means it's the person's fault. If you have healthy teeth to begin with, it is not hard to keep them that way if you know what you are doing. It's all about plaque control to prevent tooth decay and gum disease from happening in the first place, and that does NOT cost much money and takes only some effort. At your regular 6-month cleaning, you should ask the dental hygienist or the dentist to review home-care plaque control techniques with you.
An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. Nowhere is that more true than with dental care.

to the OP:
You need better-fitting dentures. There are two places in Ohio (I saw on your profile that's where you live) where you can get very good dentures for cheap: The dental schools at Ohio State University or Case Western Reserve.
Unlike a lot of private-practice dentists, the dental students at those dental schools are not allowed to take any shortcuts in making dentures. They have to perform the whole schmeer, including border-molding custom tray impressions and semianatomical condylar articulation of the models (which a lot of private-practice dentists don't bother with). As a result those dentures fit very nicely.
How do I know? I was a dental student once..

Is Matter a form of Energy?

is it possible to do the opposite by "constructing" matter from energy?
I believe that the closest thing to this that we see is the creation of quantum particles in vacuums.
There is another example of energy being turned into matter that is a bit easier to grasp...
Nucleosynthesis of elements heavier than Fe during a Supernova explosion.
Normal Main-Sequence stars cannot form elements heavier than iron through normal nuclear fusion-- Fusion to produce elements heavier than iron does not release energy like fusing lighter elements like hydrogen into helium. To produce elements heavier than iron requires a fusion reaction with an input of energy instead.
Only a supernova explosion during the death of a massive star have the tremendous amount of energy required to produce elements heavier than Fe through fusion, and the energy put into that fusion gets converted to mass.
That's how Uranium-235 is made during a supernova explosion. A U235 nucleus weighs slightly more than the two smaller nuclei it was fused from, and that extra mass is from the energy input from the supernova explosion. That energy stored into the U235 nucleus as mass by the supernova nucleosynthesis reaction can be reconverted back into energy when you split that U235 atom in a nuclear reactor or in an atom bomb.
Prof. Lawrence Krauss is fond of saying that without Supernova explosions to produce elements heavier than Iron such as Gold or Silver, Paris Hilton would not have any bling to wear. :-D

What happens if you break a bunch of matter down to the atomic level and then break it down further and you just bottle up all these broken atoms? Is the law of conservation of matter preserved? I imagine the answer is no and that some of the matter is "turned into" energy. So in essence, is matter a form of energy and is it possible to do the opposite by "constructing" matter from energy?
Yes, matter and energy are interconvertible, governed by this equation: E = mc^2
where E is energy (in Joules), m is mass of the matter (in kilograms), and c is the speed of light in vacuum (in meters per second).
Energy can be converted to mass and mass can be converted to energy.

Girls - Would you date a guy with bad teeth?
Posted:

I am a dentist.. It is my business to know what's going on in someone's mouth when I take a look at it, and I will say this:
I cannot date anyone who lets her teeth deteriorate through neglect.
I cringe at the thought of kissing someone who has gum disease with crusty tartar and sticky plaque everywhere, or someone with teeth all rotten and decayed-- Such mouths are just festering with billions of disgusting, stink-producing bacteria and the thought of kissing someone like that makes me nauseous.
These problems are largely preventable in adults who are otherwise in normal health (i.e. tooth decay and crusty tartar buildup are rarely hereditary).
Well, at least any woman who goes on a date with me are guaranteed a guy who will show up with nice straight teeth and no bad breath (though my clean breath is not guaranteed if we order spicy food), LOL..

Perhaps not in a combat application, but I find that cargo loader suit Ripley used in the movie "Aliens" to be One Cool Machine!
As far as combat applications go, infantrymen wearing powered armor suits will have applications in Urban Combat.. Basically power assisted limbs to help a soldier carry his load to increase his endurance.

Good Science Books

I second the recommendation above on Prof. Brian Greene's "Fabric of the Cosmos."
I re-read it a few times to comprehend it better, but Greene did a pretty good job explaining various aspects of the Big Bang theory in laymen's terms in that book. Not as glitzy as Hawking's "Brief History of Time," but very full of substance IMHO.
As far as Sci-Fi goes, how about some of Michael Crichton's classics, like The Andromeda Strain or Jurassic Park? (Though chances are you probably read them already.) :-)
And I find there is no better book for making me fall asleep faster than Isaac Newton's "Principia." :-D

what is Warp Drive, and how should space travel work????

The problem with Solar Sails is they're SLOOOOOOOW.
I could imagine them being used on automated ships though.
Hi Charles,
I thought the whole impetus behind solar sails is that they have the potential to be much faster than current means of propulsion (chemical rockets)?
I remember reading about how it took 6 years and 3 gravitational slingshot maneuvers (using Venus and the Earth) to get the Galileo Spacecraft to Jupiter, since it can't carry very much propellent (its main rocket motor was used sparingly-- only a short burn to boost it onto its trans-Venus trajectory injection, the various slingshot maneuvers, and the orbital insertion at Jupiter). Those who advocate solar sails claim that you can get Galileo to Jupiter in just 1 year if it had a big enough solar sail and use just the Sun for one single gravitational slingshot maneuver, and the solar sail will be continuously accelerating the craft all the way to Jupiter (which is why it's fast), compared to a chemical rocket that can only be burned for minutes (very short burst of acceleration and coast the rest of the way).
Incidentally... The Deep Space 1 spacecraft uses a similar low-but-long-thrust concept-- Its Ion Engine does not produce much thrust, but it can burn for a looooong time. At some point during its mission, its ion engine had been accelerating it for a continuous 2 years, making it the fastest spacecraft we humans have ever built to date. http://nmp.nasa.gov/ds1/
I agree they would probably be best used for unmanned missions though, because to get the maximum amount of push on the solar sail, you have to get very close to the Sun first (the gravitational slingshot maneuver), well inside Mercury's orbit.. And that's probably not a good place for a human being to be. :-D

Numerous Phone calls
Posted:
12/21/2007 7:26:39 PM
A reasonable person would not try 5 times in an hour to try to get through to someone when the phone was engaged? He wants to get a date and has plucked up the nerve to call. Doesn't get through thinks I'll give it 15 minutes and then try again. That is 5 times in an hour. How long do people usually stay on the phone for? You jump to conclusions very quickly when it comes to diagnosing psychiatric conditions. Is Ms Manners is your source for etiquette when it comes to calling when line engaged? I must have missed that chapter.
Dude, after 3 tries most reasonable people would just send an email or leave a voice mail,
especially when this is a total stranger you have never spoken to.
Unless you are a long-time friend or a family member, 13 calls in a day is pushing it, pure and simple.
I stand by my statement.
