checking out other girls
Posted: 7/5/2007 7:26:18 AM
I think everyone checks out the opposite sex... men or women. Its a natural and healthy thing to do. I bet you a million bucks you check out guys too

I love my girl very much and would never stray... but I admit I have a look when someone attactive walks by. The difference is that I am subtle about it, and I never make comments (unless it is a funny one... like a couple of weeks ago when a woman walked by with boobs the size of soccer balls and the rest of her was the size of a broomstick... she looked like she was about to fall over forwards and bounce back up like those old punching bag clowns... but I digress)

Your guy is not doing anything wrong by checkin out the others... but he is being very disrespectful with the leering and the comments.

One thing I should add... the cost of daycare is DISGUSTING. I have heard of people paying in excess of 1000 bucks per month on daycare.

The average month has what... 20 weekdays in it? How can they justify charging 50 bucks per day per child?? (they often have around 10 kids too) That should be regulated somehow.

what's so bad about spanking your kid?
Posted: 7/3/2007 1:12:09 PM

Saddest of all, the kids that are truly abused by their parents are still being abused and seriously hurt. While other parents are afraid to use any physical discipline at all.

Bingo Angel. Very well said.

All the "experts" come up with new theories and studies to sell their own books. Many of them have no kids of their own, and I do blame the new age thinking for a lot of the problems we have today (as well as the lack of father figures in many homes). Different situations call for different solutions. A spanking is one of the last resorts when other things fail.

Bottom line is that until they learn how to reason and make decisions... kids are basically the same as animals. A kid that has never been around violence can and often does get into scraps with other kids. They slap, they bite, they scratch. It is a parent's job to teach reason and discipline to their kids. The time outs, talks etc are a good way to teach reasoning... but sometimes nothing gets the message through better than a smack on the bum cheeks. It is critical to keep your own cool though so you do not cross the line between a spanking and a beating. Pain is the most effective stimulus of them all when used properly.

The key that some people forget is what has to come after the spanking. Let them stew for a while and stop crying, then go in and calmly ask if they know why they got spanked. Explain exactly what they did wrong, and WHY it is wrong. THIS is where they learn. It makes the lesson real.

WTF is up with women using being safeonline as an excuse to play games?
Posted: 7/3/2007 12:39:44 PM
I think a certain amount of caution is ok... but eventually it becomes a red flag. If you have been chatting for a couple of weeks and she still wont meet you in a very public place then chances are that she probably isnt someone that is worth a lot of your time and effort.

My current gf is an extremely timid and cautious person (she even locks the car doors when I am in there with her), but even she met me in person within a week of meeting me on an online dating site. The key is to make sure she feels as comfortable as possible. We met in a busy coffee shop and talked for a couple of hours (normally I limit it to no more than 45 minutes). A year and a half later, and things are still great with us.

I do think that guys have more to worry about though. The problem is that we are easier to lure into things. We tend to not automatically look for a threat in a situation the way women do. When I lived in Toronto, I was invited out with a woman I had been speaking to online. I was suposed to go to her place and pick her up. When I arrived, 2 guys attempted to rob me (unfortunately for them, they chose a very bad candidate for that... I wont get into details) It was a setup.

I suspect things like this happen a lot more often than we hear about.

Guess I have to lay the smack down a little here... first of all I have to wonder why so many people on welfare have cable tv and internet connections. You are blowing at least 50 bucks a month right there. (Dont tell me the internet is for job hunting either, because a lot of you have made it quite clear you have no intention of getting a job any time soon) These things are luxuries, not necessities of life.

Eating well is NOT chicken weiners every day. I am a big, active guy so I eat well.

There are all kinds of recipes on google for cheap meals that are also healthy. Some of you people will use any excuse to cover your own laziness and ineptitude so allow me to help. Here are some cheap AND nutritious meals for some of you above that can't seem to think on your own.

*************
1 pound of ground beef (3 bucks TOPS)+large can crushed tomato (1 dollar)+package of mushrooms (1.50) + garlic (25 cents for a bulb) + package of pasta (1 dollar)= healthy spaghetti for about 6 bucks. This will feed me for at least 3 meals
*************
1 can of tuna (less than 1 dollar) + rice (also very cheap) A good, nutricious meal for just over a buck
***********
1 pound of hamburger (3 bucks or less) + package of pasta (1 dollar) + can of cream of mushroom soup (69 cents)= hamburger casserole. This EASILY last a person 2 or 3 meals.
***********
Potatos (3 or 4 bucks for 10 pounds) + a family pack of pork chops (I buy 4 chops for 2.50) 2 meals for about a buck fifty each with LOTS of taters leftover.
***********
1 bunch bananas (6 bananas are about a buck)+loaf of bread (1.50)+1 dozen eggs (about 2 bucks) eggs toast and a banana for breakfast all week for about a buck a meal
***********

That is well over a week's worth of meals for approximately 28 bucks... even less if you shop for specials.

I really dont care when she has it or how many she has (as long as she gets one)

Speaking from experience though... its generally easier for a woman to get there again if she has already had one. This usually means get her off in foreplay, and she will be more likely to get there during sex too.

Dating Someone On Welfare **
Posted: 7/3/2007 8:54:21 AM
Would I date someone on welfare... absolutely NOT.

I think a lot can be explained by a simple thing... too many people abuse the system!

This is where the stigma of laziness comes from. Too many people abuse it, so the entire bunch starts getting painted with it.

If the system wants more respect then it should be tightened up. Welfare is for food, clothes, and housing ONLY (including utilities etc). I think anyone collecting welfare should not be allowed to consume alcohol, drugs, cigarettes or any other "luxuries". None of those things are necessities of life, and public money should not be wasted on them. There should be testing for it, and if you fail you get cut off. When I am low on cash, I quit all the "fun stuff" for a while and go back to basics. When I want to save up some money, I can eat VERY well for around 50-100 bucks a month. If I can do it, why can't other people?

I grew up in a small town and saw a lot of multi generation welfare recipients who were proud to be receiving handouts. They looked down on people for going out and actually working for a living. This disgusted the many hard-working people that also lived there. I admit that this lead me to having a bias towards welfare recipients too.

People need to remember that welfare was designed to help you survive until you can get back on your feet. It was never intended to be a life long handout. I dont think anyone would have a problem for someone down on their luck to collect for a short time while they got their life back together... but we expect them to pull their own weight too.

I do tend to look down on druggies though. It is a 100% self-induced problem so its hard to feel sympathy. There are a million excuses for why they got into it... but excuses is all that they are.

I do remember reading about this a year or so ago. I can't remember where I read it though. Hard to seperate fact from fiction sometimes... especially when its "classified" information we are dealing with.

There is something missing between the above from what I read. Apparently the Isrealies were posing as Egyptians and firing on the Americans to get the US involved against Egypt and the other allies. (apparently the US was involved in this plot too... hence why nobody dug deeper and things were swept under the rug)

Canada at war. With who?
Posted: 6/28/2007 12:13:23 PM

Reports from American citizens living in Afghanistan indicate the US is making a mess and they love the Canadian presnece and hope they'll stay forever. Which is nice and all, but is this really Canada's fight?

So using that logic, what exactly would constitute a legitimate fight for Canada to be in? Historically, none of the conflicts we have participated in have been "Canada's fight". The Boer war, WW1, WW2, Korea... none of these directly involved Canada apart from us doing the right thing and going in to a fight along with our allies to stop bad things from happening.

What DID result from these conflicts is that Canada gained the respect of the world, and its autonomy as a country of its own. We are not known to the world as "peacekeepers" contrary to lefty rhetoric, thats a term we have labelled ourselves. That has just been the only role Canadian soldiers have been used for in our generation, so thats what we have become accustomed to. Now that we are once again fighting against tyranny, our soldiers are getting to do what they are trained to do. We are known for producing some of the most honourable, effective and tough soldiers the world has ever seen and THAT is something to be proud of.

Now at the risk of sounding callous, and with the utmost respect to the families that have lost someone... war comes with casualties so we have to learn to suck it up.

We have lost 60 soldiers over the course of 5 years... we have killed several hundred of the enemy... which in terms of armed conflict is a pretty darn good ratio. Had we scutinized each death the way we do now back in th 1940's there is no way in hell we would have won. With the media as powerful as it is, the west has lost its stomach for being able to take casualties and the enemy knows this. This is why we aren't likely ever going to win another war as long as we have this status quo (you cant expect to roll over the enemy without taking any casualties)

Lets look at this from a different angle now. If we average the death rate over the entire conflict, we are averaging one soldier per month. According to statistics released in Dec of 2006, an average of 5 Canadians are killed EVERY DAY at their workplaces. That is approximately 150 times more people being killed right here at home. Does that mean we should all abandon working too?

An abortion left me without a child. Happen to anyone else?
Posted: 6/28/2007 9:44:55 AM
The waters are pretty murky on this topic for sure... most of the time people will happily chime in that it takes 2 people to make a baby, but there seems to be zero rights of the father when it comes to children (he is just the source of finance)

Woman wants abortion and father doesnt... woman wins

Woman doesnt want abortion and father does... woman wins and father still has to pay.

Its a nearly impossible thing to legislate fairly because of the physical risks involved.

I have really gotten sick and tired of people confusing IRAQ with AFGHANISTAN... 2 different conflicts people... and one of them we have nothing to do with at all.

The media is impossible for me to trust these days. Both sides pump non stop propaganda to the public so its hard to know what is fact and what is BS.

But I have to rebut to one statement earlier... 650000 dead people in Iraq. Seems on the high side to me, but let's go with that number. Of that 650k... how many were killed by fellow Iraqies or "insurgants" from neighbouring countries? A vast majority. How many were killed by Saddam's thugs BEFORE the war? That's a number that nobody can seem to agree on. Now that there is actually media attention on the area, the numbers get to the surface.

The problem now is that things degenerated into a civil war. This is making the casualty list grow almost exponentially because they are killing each other during religious squabbles on top of the mostly foreign insurgants fighting with americans. It all boils down to one big mess.

The reason I dont have any LED lights installed is purely because I couldnt get them at the time. I fitted my place with CFLs and it would have been a waste of money to convert again. As the CFLs die out (or as I add lights) I do plan to install LEDs without a doubt.

I agree, the quality of light would not be the same from one technology to the next. Some people get headaches from regular fluorescent lights. There is an expression that applies well here "there is no such thing as a free lunch" If you want power savings, you have to be prepared to sacrifice on something else. As far as I am concerned, if it lights well enough for me to see without straining or getting a headache, I am quite happy. I find that the light produced by LEDs is actually quite well suited to my eyes anyway. I have some of those shaker flashlights and I am very impressed with their performance.

Where LEDs win the power battle is that they can be pulsed. There is a driver circuit that turns them on and off at a rate faster than the human eye can detect (almost anything using LEDs already do this to take advantage of power savings) It reduces the average power usage significantly. The physics of LEDs is what helps them in the longevity department too. I would expect the driver circuit to fail before the LED does.

The thing I am suspect of is the EMI (some people call it RFI yes) This is actually my specialized field of expertise. The driver circuit would likely cause a lot of interference to be generated, but there is no way to tell what it could interfere with. The worst effect you could likely expect in a household environment would be analog TV or radio degradation... possibly some reduced speed on your internet too but not very likely.

And like I said before that post... the new LED lights are the cat's meow. They use a fraction of what even a CFL uses, and they have longevity that nothing else can rival for both steady use and on/off.

My only concern with them is the interference they will produce. I would like to get one in my lab and have at it with the test equipment.

Environmental Friendliness...Ideas and Suggestions

I'm still trying to figure out what this means, especially if ANY light bulb includes incandescent? Bulbs are generally considered as incandescent, lamps include all others.

It means anything that screws into a power source and emits light when you turn on the switch.

For those that would like a brief, low-tech electricity lesson with respect to lights keep reading: (For those of you that like to watch Myth Busters, they did a very good example of this exact thing during one of their episodes... as someone who does electrical engineering for a living, I can tell you that their test procedure was a good one)

Electricity in houses is AC (alternating current) which means it travels in a sine-wave. The peak of the wave is 120V. Voltage is the force that will push current through a conductor (think of it like water in a pipe... voltage is water pressure, current is water flow, the pipe is a conductor). In North America we use 60Hz for our power distribution... that means the wave is cycling at a rate of 60 times per second.

While the styles of light are different, (halogen vs incandescent vs CFL vs LED) they all depend on current to emit light. The most common bulb (incandescent) is basically just a wire inside a vacuum. Current flows through the wire conductor then converts the current into heat and emits light as a by-product (same as your stove elements glow red when they are hot).

CFL (compact fluorescent light) are tubes filled with gas. They take the 120V from the wall and ramp it up to a high voltage. When the voltage gets high enough, it ionizes the gas inside the tube, which makes it into a conductor. Current starts to flow, and the voltage is reduced. When the gas molecules are excited, they emit light (this is similar to how the northern lights work) Once the initial powerup happens, a very small amount of current will sustain the effect. (best example of this is the new heinz ketchup squeeze bottles... at first you have to squeeze pretty hard to get it to come out but once it starts you dont need to squeeze as hard to keep it flowing)

When you first switch on a light (no matter what type of light it is) you get a short pulse of current that is higher than the normal level of that light. The technical term is "inrush".

What happens next is the inrush current will decay for a few cycles... usually about 5 (remember, there are 60 cycles every second) until it reaches its normal, this is called "steady state". In ALL of the common forms of lighting, once you do the math, you get to see that the inrush amount of energy is indeed higher than steady state... but only adds up to less than one second worth of steady state power. Which means the fraction of a second of inrush time uses up less than 1 second of steady state power.

It boils down to this... if you are leaving the room for more than one second, you will be using less power if you shut the light off and turn it on again when you come back into the room.

I also think its very stupid to publicly announce a deadline to pull out.

A Taliban leader will probably be saying hmmm... maybe we should just lay low until Feb 2009 and then as soon as the muscle leaves we can really raise some hell!!

They should just be there until the job is done... if its sooner thats awesome... if its slightly later then so be it. You can't just pull out and leave a power vaccuum suddenly!

As for NATO... a member nation was attacked, and that means the allies will respond. If someone attacked us you can be damn sure that we would be asking others to pitch in a hand too.

I think Canada should be pushing for certain members of NATO to be reprimended though. It should not be the sole problem of Canada/USA/UK to be in the "hot spots" I am seeing a lot of fair weather friends now.

If France was attacked and they surrendered within a few days, then you can bet your bacon that they would want us to win it back for them and then invade the country that invaded them (wow... that sounds eerily familiar doesnt it? LOL) If you want to get... you have to give!

I see it as a decent interim band-aid solution for the energy crunch but not a permanent fix. It keeps the air and water clean, but has its own challenges in disposing of the waste products.

If they could only find a way to use the byproducts for something else it would be great!

And if you use compact flourescent bulbs, be aware that it takes more power to energize them than it does to run them. So they are meant to be turned on and left on (for a certain period of time) before they become more efficient they regular bulbs.

That's actually 100% wrong... and the same applies to ANY lightbulb. The initial power up uses less that one second-worth of steady state power. So unless you are leaving the room for less than 1 second, its most economical to shut off the lights and turn them back on when you come back. The only adverse effect to this is that it reduces the lifespan of the bulb slightly.

LED bulbs are BY FAR the best choice for lighting at the moment. They are incredibly good on power, and have a MUCH longer lifespan than incandecsent, Halogen or CFL bulbs.

Recycling is a huge thing. I notice that for every small bag I place into the dumpster, I am recycling 2 or 3 of the same size bags. That means I have reduced my contribution to the landfill by 66 to 75% (assuming everything is recycled that I place in the blue box)

In the winter... lower your thermostat setting a little bit. I had mine set to around 17 C this past winter. I was perfectly comfortable most of the time, and when it felt too cool, I put on a long sleeve shirt or a sweater. I cut my gas bill in more than HALF!!

Water usage is another thing we can easily control. Letting the faucet run for a long time is silly (like when we brush our teeth and leave it running while we are brushing). Taking multiple showers every day wastes water too.

What I wish they had thought of is using "grey water" for certain things (like toilets). This would be water that has not been completely purified. Does it make sense to pee in fresh drinkable water?

What it all boils down to is eliminating wastage... pay attention to things as you do them and then think about a way you could have done it with less.

I think its just part of a cycle... you can see peaks and valleys form in any genre of music. It gets really popular then becomes a victim of its own success.

I think rock is finally starting to come back around. I have been hearing some good stuff coming on the radio after a few years of sugar coated crap. I suspect it just hits a point where people demand a little more from the music and want some talent again.

Plus... it's been a while since we had a true guitar ICON rise up so I think we are due.

I grew up in a town with no real minorities so it was hard to get any kind of taste of other cultures. "Foreign food" was spaghetti or chicken balls with rice LOL We were mostly an english/french rivalry around those parts.

I can vouch one thing for my folks though... I was always taught to have an open mind. It wasnt until I moved to the city that I started realizing that some of the stereotypes are based on truth. I have no bias against any cultures, just some of them annoy me a bit at times.

I can say one thing though... I really do have a love for going out and trying new foods from different parts of the world! Most restaurants I have been to are proud to share some of their culture with someone that wants to experience it.

will a guy forgive?

Yep... its hard to get things back once the seed of doubt has been planted. Sometimes you don't even have to cheat... they only have to think you did. All it takes is one friend (or sometimes family member) that either hates you... or wants you for herself.

I have NEVER cheated on a gf... but I have been dumped 3 times for cheating... screwy math eh?

I see all this sugar coated poop and think one thing...

I am thankful that we didn't have this many snivelling COWARDS living amongst us 65 years ago.

What I was referring to with the "liberal lefties" are the liberal party of Canada. They are experts in what I call label warfare. They are beaten in this only by the NDP... but they are just background noise to most people so I dont acknowledgement.

But to retort... your argument was pretty weak lukewarm dishwater. What do you really think is worse to be called? A tree hugger or a racist? These terms are not only different ballparks... they are different leagues.

^^^ That begs the question... what if they had put in that kind of effort on the marriage and on themselves? Would there still have been a divorce?

Movies from books
Posted: 6/21/2007 6:52:35 AM
I think too many people make the mistake of assuming the movie will be as good or better than the book... the book is almost always far better than a movie. We all know that.

You have to keep in mind that movies are an interpretation of the book. Some books just dont translate well into movies so they tend to be even bigger let-downs. For me, the appeal in seeing a movie based on a book is to see the director's interpretation of it.

I agree with the above though... LOTR were phenomenal movies. I admit, I read the books after I saw the movies and thoroughly enjoyed both. I bear in mind that some things have to be altered to be a movie, but for the most part I can see why he strayed from the books in certain parts. I think the movies were actually a slight improvement on the books in this case to be honest!!

The more I read the details, the more it looks like the feds trying to crack down on the "home grown terrorists" that have been an increasing threat.

Looks like the governement is trying to give itself the power to arrest clerics who tell people to strap a bomb to themselves and blow people up for one example.

Making Improvements to Yourself for 'Datability'

I think some people mix up the terms improve yourself, and alter yourself JUST to please others.

I don't see anything wrong with wanting to change yourself to make you more attractive to the opposite sex. I used to have the "I am who I am" mentality, but for some things it just doesnt cut it. I started asking myself... would I date someone that does that?

I think there are lots of healthy things to improve yourself. Dressing nicer, getting into better shape, a new hair-do, whatever. Often it leads to you looking better to the opposite sex... but it also gets you feeling better about yourself, and THAT is the most attractive thing.

Travelling Ontario for a vacation

There is always Niagara falls... its a bit of a tourist trap but you cant say there isnt a lot to do! Try the maid of the mist if you go... I loved it

Or...

Kingston is a nice place too. Lots of historical stuff to see if you are into that.

Or...

I second the idea of the Algonquin park camping trip. Lots of gorgeous scenery around those parts!

You can say without hatred that you believe homosexuality is sinful. If you start condeming them its stopped being anything but incitement.

I am not a religious person... but it is my understanding that one of the foundations of most religions is NOT harming people. I guess it boils down to whether or not a pastor is good at his job or not. If he wants to condemn people for certain attributes then fine go ahead... but the very next thing out of his mouth should be reminding people that they are not suposed to harm others... that should be left up to whatever god it is they worship right?

Is ice cream the new coffee?
Posted: 6/20/2007 10:25:45 AM
Yes I have done the ice cream date. Its a nice alternative for a low-key casual date. It kinda brings out the kid in us all.

Worse one for me was when we met at DQ... turned out they didnt have interac and I had no cash on me. She was nice and ended up buying me a blizzard but I felt like a real dink.

Movies from books

What are the best books/stories that you really wish they would make a movie or miniseries from?

Me...

-The Dark Tower Series (Stephen King) These books totally sucked me in. Its one long story told through 7 large books. It would be REALLY hard to make a movie out of these books though... you would need 7 movies longer than the Lord of the Rings movies were!

I think it would make a VERY cool tv series though. There is so much to these books that you could get a couple of seasons out of them easy.

Movies now suck...what happened?
Posted: 6/20/2007 10:16:29 AM
Yes I have been thinking it for a while... Hollywood is dead. There just don't seem to be any good original ideas out there anymore! They are still putting out some very good movies... they are just few and far between. Most of the stuff rammed down our throats are remakes, sequels, way too predictable or its another crappy Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson/Will Ferrel garbage pile. Sorry boys... you just arent funny!

Most of this summer's "blockbusters" have been real letdowns (almost all of them are sequels too)

As for recommendations... I like a lot of the "newer classics" but there are some oldies too.

My personal fav's are:
-Lord of the Rings trilogy (shining example of great story WITH great special effects)
-Braveheart (tell me you didnt have a lump in your throat at the end!)
-We Were Soldiers (the best war movie I have ever seen)
-The Usual Suspects (great example of a low budget movie... and it actually tricked me)
-Slapshot (best hockey movie ever made)
-Old Yeller (even guys cant avoid crying for this one LOL)
-Spartacus (set the bar for the "epic" movie)
-The Crow (Just a great story)
-Spaceballs (best spoof of all time... will be hard to top)
-The original 3 Star Wars movies (cool story with effects that still compete 30 years later)

Anyone miss any of their childhood toys?
Posted: 6/20/2007 8:13:58 AM
HELL YES I miss my old toys.

Do you have any idea how much I could get on Ebay for them now had I kept them? LOL

This is partly why I love flea markets so much... especially the "junk aisles". Its a trip down memory lane seeing all those old toys and games that I used to play with.
