Why is everyone so negative?

Because the stronger a negative charge, the more powerfully it repels other negative charges and attracts positive ones. You see, being more negative, bitter, and mean in your life is the key to happiness by the principles of electrostatics!

ENOUGH ENOUGH!! Exxon Mobil Profit Sets Record Again
Posted:

By any measure, Exxon Mobil’s performance last year was a blowout
Except there's no quote of any measure by PROFIT MARGIN, which is more important than every other nearly irrelevant reiteration of the DOLLAR PROFIT in your post. This is not how you assess a publicly traded company.
Thank you, ilegion Taranis X, for mentioning the issue in your responses above.

Smoked Mackeral.. mmm nice! But what to have it with?
Posted:
1/23/2008 2:14:40 PM
I'm not sure that the strong smelling/tasting choline-based compounds in fish work very well flavor-wise with the whey and casein in dairy. Maybe I'm in the minority on this, but with few exceptions, (lox and cream cheese on a bagel, hollandaise sauce on halibut,) I'm not a big fan of mixing the two food groups.
Smoked fish is usually very strong tasting, and I typically eat it in small amounts on a high quality cracker with other appetizers. Sometimes I'll use it to make a hearty sandwich on challah bread with onions, tomato, (olives?,) and healthy mayonnaise. Generally, if I'm going to eat salty smoked fish in large amounts, there had better be some other strong flavor to balance it out, or else my tongue rebels.

Chilli please

the only authority I need is my own taste and that of my friends.
That's fine, but the OP made a specific request for which your own taste and that of your friends isn't relevant.
I wasn't offering YOU my recipe so if you don't like the way I make it, then ignore it.
No, I won't ignore it, because the OP wanted
authentic Texan
chili and you're continually suggesting something that is at best unorthodox, if not wrong.
We all get your point now, okay?
I would have thought so myself, but you seem obstinately to dismiss the better evidence. For the record though, all those other bean recipes are indeed wrong.
Have a nice day!

Chili cook-offs are scrutinized by thousands and therefore a much better authorities for AUTHENTIC chili than one recipe passed down by word of mouth in ONE family or ONE cookbook. I'm really shocked that a Texan wouldn't know that beans are
verboten
- your peers are the most conservative among chili purists.
Minor ingredients like cocoa are fair game, (which I use,) so long as chili peppers and meat are part of the recipe.

On a side note, orgasm isnt related to the word orgy at all.
You are a 100% incorrect. Both words come directly from the Greek root "ORG," each simply being a different noun form.

I may be wrong, but I was always certain "authentic" chili had neither ground beef or beans in it.
No, you are fairly correct. As someone who's lived in the south and known a number of rednecks proud to be born and bred Dixie, commit these 6 words to memory: "THERE ARE NO BEANS IN CHILI." Putting in beans might be something "chili-LIKE," but it 'aint the real deal.
Using ground meat is kind of a copout, a poor man's chili in lieu of hand carved chunks from a choice cut of good meat, but it's nowhere near as sacrilegious as putting in beans.
Those of you southerners who're advocating bean-based recipes, shame on you for tampering with a mainstay of American cuisine!

http://www.chili.org/documents/CASI%20Official%20Rule%20Book.pdf
Beans are FORBIDDEN in these and any other serious chili cook-off, as they are starchy "fillers" along with pasta, rice, etc. There are some pretty creative and unique chilis out there, but for chrissake, LEAVE OUT THE BEANS!

Every word ending with "-asm" is Greek in origin, and refers to a "state of being" noun. The "org-" root, means "swelling with moisture," "ripen," "be incited with madness/passion/frenzy." "Cum" is PROBABLY just a variation on "come," a word which in multiple languages (such as Greek) can have the connotation of reaching sexual climax.

Either because they're scared of you for making them feel less self-disciplined and classy, or they're turned off by the fact that you're scared of alcohol. Which is it? You don't just "wake up" and decide that you're going to do something counter to the social status quo. Come back with a better reason so that we can investigate the matter further.

Tatoos on a women turn on or turn off

Even a broken clock is wrong twice a day, as it goes to show when Nashville talk show host Phil Valentine on the radio said something to the effect of, "if you're ugly, the tattoo isn't going to make you look attractive, and if you look hot already, you don't need them." A rare moment of sound argument from him.

It is ONE HECK of a deal-breaker. "Humans are by nature political animals," said a wise man, and if a girl is either too stupid or too flighty to try and understand politics, she fails in her capacity to fulfill her humanity: Politics, or rather lack thereof, a
sledgehammer
of a deal-breaker.
The only specific position of disagreement I don't think I could stand is supporting the erosion of the wall between church and state.

Yes, SparkintheDark, we are. A few women are going to be pickier, but in general, one of the few advantages we men have in the dating world is slower diminution of value with age. Do you really need to ask such obvious questions???

Putin, Time's Man of the Year
Posted:

Time once again picks a communist to be man of the year. Notice how the liberal media can not help but LOVE and Adore Commies. Castro, Putin, Gorbechev, Stalin, Marx, Lenin
Though I'm baffled as to why Time would want to honor an ex-KGB man who seems to be unconcerned with re-chilling the Soviet-U.S. thaw, clamping down on free media, allowed giving nuclear fuel to the rogue Iranian government, a probable accomplice in Litvinenko's plutonium poisoning - do still keep in mind that Newt Gingrich was Man of the Year in 1995.
Look at how the article is titled: "Choosing Order Before Freedom." Within, "[Putin] is not a paragon of free speech. He stands, above all, for stability—stability before freedom, stability before choice, stability in a country that has hardly seen it for a hundred years."
A communist? Perhaps not in the technical sense, but it's obvious to anyone with a shred of history under their belts that he's owed his popularity to the masses who remember the "good ol' days" when you at least had stable food prices, a job, and social security even if it meant that your neighbor might disappear in the middle of the night or have his property seized if he didn't have the right friends higher up. "Stability," sure. pre-War Iraq was fairly stable too compared to what we have now, but I don't recall anyone clamoring to put Hussein on a pedestal and overlook his gassings, rape rooms, and nationalized oil fields.

Markus, I'm not going to name names of individual users, but wouldn't POF be a nicer place if you required passing an IQ test or something similar to join? I recall in a weekly reading for "The Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education" in school that 96% of Americans can't solve a basic square area word problem with length and width given: I wouldn't even
hope
to try and explain fractions and percentages.
The attack on your data, (immune to the fact that you more than anyone else can read and sort them) and statistics in general is thinly veiled defense of ignorance, and at the same time a self-indictment.
The HPV - smoking connection is interesting, but you might want to note that it covered Cypriots, not Americans.

And this, O' august admin, is why crowdsourcing the forum threads for deletion is a bad idea. Democracy empowers the ignorant. If I were their high school math or English teacher, I wouldn't have given most of them passing marks to graduate.
I have to strongly resist the urge to start scathingly lampooning the droves of... ah... "intellectually struggling" who've shown their true colors by lackluster information literacy skills in miscomprehending basic statements
Just because something is purported to be “well known in the dating industry” it does not mean it is factual. I take umbrage to your rude proclamation that “WOMEN WHO SMOKE ARE FAR MORE PROMISCUOUS” and I am offended by this post.
Faulty market research is not known for lasting very long. Try reading the whole thread next time.
HAHA! This is a really silly stat. A habit is just that. It has nothing to do with sexual promiscuity.
Coming from a silly individual who'd apparently rather stick her head in the sand rather than read.
NOT FAIR!....and NOT TRUE!...and shame on you!!!
That's nice. Did mommy and daddy finally teach us to stop lying on the floor, banging our hands and feet to get our point heard?
Needless to say, OP, you are stereotyping, even if it's with statistics (And most of us know that statistics can be rigged to say whatever you want them to say.)
The OP is not stereotyping. You are, with your faulty logic. Over 38 million people have AIDS worldwide according to statistics, but I could just be an America-hating liberal with a gay agenda trying to rig the number, right? Conservation of linear momentum works 100% of the time, but I might just be a god-hating evolutionist blasphemer rigging that statistic too, right?
And I do not believe that this study or any study is based on reality only skewed to get the answer the person doing the research is looking for.
So I guess you never take prescription drugs either, right, since the pharmaceutical companies are profit-driven, too untrustworthy to be taking their chemicals, doctoring every and any studies?
You Sir are a big joke i am a smoker and was with the same man for 33 yrs and never once did i look at another guy
Good for you. You failed critical reading 101.
i don,t smoke but this sounds ridiculous!Where do ppl get these ideas from?
Maybe from unfettered access to filter every bit of data that's ever passed through the POF program?
I don't really like the last grouping of data. It doesn't necessarily mean anything. Drawing the conclusion that "women who smoke are more likely to cheat" from that data seems erroneous.
Smokers being more likely to cheat is not drawn from the last set of data. Though I admit, I would like to see this market research.
Promiscuous women are more likely to be smokers ". Does that sound any better
That would be an unproven assumption though.
The only way it could be scientific fact is if they randomly picked thousands of smoking, anonymous women and surveyed them. Even so, there is a 3-4 % margin of error.
We have more breakdown than that from research psychologists alone. Granted, it would be nice to see some better citation. Margin of error is determined a function of sample size to total population; it is not absolute.
That's the dumbest statement I ever heard. It's akin to saying men who drink beer cant get an erection.
F in analogous reasoning for you.
These numbers show a certain degree of correlation between two different factors... CORRELATION DOES NOT MEAN CAUSAL EVIDENCE
No causal connection was made in the OP. Only a correlational one. The people you SHOULD be yelling this at are those I've cited above.

I don't know the statistics, but I do know that there are women in prison for having committed these crimes, although I suspect there are more men inside for the same thing. Whether that's due to the justice system(s) or under reporting of it by men is probably anyones' guess ....... Well, Schaden, if you read my posts again (the topic of conversation has flown around as wildly as a bucking horse) you'll note that I drew clear distinction between physical "abuse" and potentially lethal threat. The thread has lost a lot of its focus though, so I understand the need to reemphasize this. Far be it from me to deny that some (many? most?) women are crazy and sneaky enough to pull off a stunt like you describe! ("He had it comin'! He had it comin'! He only had himself to blaaaaaaame.....")
Tilly, I haven't been out to insult anybody, but I can't be held responsible for the overly sensitive who make it their second job to feel offended and outraged. (What's that pay these days?)
(your attempt at sarcasm doesn't hide the real meaning)
I stand firmly by the assertion that I'd never make such bigotted comments. Some people (especially those who can't accurately read arguments) might, though. My opinions are not generalized facts, they're just my opinions, and I've never intended to push them any further. If however, you consider all opinions opposed to yours as intolerable "generalisations of fact," then I guess Godwin's Law is about to come home to roost.
I work with women (some smaller than you) that would chew you up and blow you out in small bubbles.
No you don't. How about that?
As for posting your address on an open forum ( if it's genuine)....how intelligent is that? I'd be looking over my shoulder if I were you.
Did you miss the last sentence or are you just not very adept at reading? It's a genuine address all right (one where I can be regularly found) but it's not my own. If you were I, you'd be good looking.

A lot of women are bigger than you, but they could scarcely lift me off the ground. It's strength, not size, that makes men the physically dominant sex.
It was very decent of you though to really talk to and get to know me before making snide generalizing statements. That makes one more girl you've hit than I ever have. (Unless you count the 1st grade when I hit Vicky (a 2nd grader) on the back because she took my unopened big bag of Cheetos out of my backpack on the bus line reserved for a class party and started eating them. But hey, I got her

There is the argument that age or length is not a determination of experience as you can do something for 15 years but it was one year of learning and 14yrs of repeating what you learned... You sound and appear to be one of those boys who was well sheltered by their parents and has only experienced life from a very sheltered perspective.
Why go back on your insightful consideration by labeling me with little more than a profile and a few forum posts to make your judgment? If I had simply towed the party line, would you think that I was wise beyond my years? I've been on this site for utterly too long to care about pleasing the politically correct majority. The nature of domestic abuse in "American" and ethnic communities is beyond the understanding of everybody here who wants to simplify it. Thanks though, Westpark, for paying the devil his due.
In other words.......The next time I meet a 5ft. 104 lb woman with anger issues....I'll make sure i give her your profile name.
Please do. She won't be the first I've come across, and no, I probably wouldn't have to lay a finger on her to manage the situation.
I doubt that few, if any--including the most vehemently anti-male--are going to be impressed with your ("Boo hoo. Grow a pair.") retort,
I hope not the anti-male crowd, since I'm very pro-male (and pro-female, I might add.) By the way, Schadenfreudian, try growing a pair and stop smearing me personally over the internet.

you think a female abuser wouldn't have you arrested for that?
Arrested for what? Picking up a thrashing woman and gently placing her outside? Non-violently stopping someone from hurting him and herself? You think that without any bruises, blood, or injuries of any kind that the police are going to want to get involved in a baseless domestic squabble?
Especially when she runs to the cops and says he hits her all the time
And has what evidence to show for it, if gentle measures of restraint are taken? Do you think cops have nothing better to do than sit and listen to perfectly unharmed women squabble about their man problems? O tempora, O mores!
you are unlikely to hear about it, because of the stigma that you will make those men feel
I certainly hope so. The little I have heard in the past already is nauseating.
The question is, do we resolve such cases by following the rule of law, or do we continue to give men the privilege of going outside the law to "handle it" themselves?
A much better question, Ace. I think you've answered it yourself though, with the quote from my OP that you excerpted. In some rare circumstances, the authorities are going to have to intervene. People fail to understand however, that a lot of domestic "abuse" is a culturally accepted way of communicating or coping which might not be technically within the bounds of law, but does little significant harm. Of course, anyone who likes the idea of super-sensitizing and emasculating men in order to equate suffering with the letter of the law probably likes the vector we're collectively heading on.
If some punk smacked your daughter...
If he smacked my daughter, that wouldn't really be "forcible but not painful," now would it? If she had sat on his chest while he slept and held a knife to his neck however, and he woke up at the cool sensation of sharp steel's pressure and then reacted by shooting his hand up towards her face, well, I think we'd both feel a bit differently about things, now wouldn't we?
The charge? Kidnapping. You cannot legally transport a person even a foot without their consent.
Kidnapping? Where do you think you'll find an officer with enough time and too little stress in his life to investigate a domestic call of kidnapping when no one's gone missing, no one is found restrained or injured, and the wife calls from the premises?
Don Vito is not my idea of a role model
Admittedly, but he has his shining moments.
The law has changed out from under you, my friend. It's time for you to get real and stop living in your chauvanist's dreamland.
Your conflation of law, enforcement, justice, and tradition leads you to several incorrect ideas about American jurisprudence and culture. Nothing you're saying is TECHNICALLY wrong; with enough money, energy, and time to waste you can prosecute on anything. The reality however, is that most serious crimes are still gotten away with, and unless serious harm is done, most domestic "abuse" is resolved privately, which can be to the benefit of everyone. The police only get involved when it spills over. Chauvinism is alive and well, albeit not something I endorse wholesale. You're very confused, Ace, because the exact dictates of "the law" is a dreamland, effective only in a law student's practice briefs.

Abused Men

I suspect you'd be a lot more concerned about it if your partner smacked you over the head with a baseball bat as you slept.
That's not abuse: that veers into attempted murder with a deadly weapon. Wholly different story.
What do you suggest they do? Take it and not say a word?
Well, since we're talking about female on male abuse specifically, he should confront her and not take it. If it's repeated physical abuse, I'd recommend forcibly but not painfully moving her out of the house until she relents. If she's one of the rare super strong types, he should leave, take his things, and not come back. Remember that scene when Johnny Fontaine is sobbing to Vito Corleone about his girlfriend stripping him of his dignity, "What do I do, Godfather?" Marlon Brando responds appropriately by smacking him and telling him, "you can start acting like a man!"
Part of me suspects the men ONLY keep quiet about being abused because they're a) humiliated and b) they know if they raise a hand to fight back or defend themselves, they'll be the one's carted off to jail.
I agree. Firstly, they SHOULD be humiliated for continually putting up with it and not taking action. Their action however, if they're REAL MEN, doesn't have to involve any remotely unlawful level of force. I'm sorry, but we men DO have certain biological and cultural advantages, one of which is strength, the other of which is the expectation that we endure, look out for and take care of ourselves.
With all the interests you list on your profile, you really should be capable of a more intelligent response than:
"Grow a pair"
Brevity is the soul of wit.
You use a screen name of a martyred saint
No, we coincidentally use a nice Greek nickname, but old Johnny and I have no connection.

I think that a lot of men are abused by their wives and girlfriends...What are your thoughts ?
My thoughts... honestly? "Boo hoo. Grow a pair."
I know it sounds chauvinist, but I can't help it: I'm more concerned with the attack on masculinity the denial of scientific gender difference than promoting the tyranny of self-empowerment. I'm ready to discuss female on male abuse case by case, but the abstraction is sickening.

Online Dating: poor results

From an article excellent article in Scientific American:
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=79C583A1-E7F2-99DF-3BE62D88C9C352E0
"Advertising materials from the largest online dating services--Match, eHarmony, True.com and Yahoo! Personals--suggest that more than 50 million Americans are now using such services (assuming relatively little overlap in membership) and that satisfaction levels are high. But recent independent studies suggest that only 16 million Americans were using online dating services by late 2005 and that satisfaction levels were low. Based on a phone survey with more than 2,000 people, Jupiter Research reports that 'barely one quarter of users reported being very satisfied or satisfied with online personals sites.'"
Another reason to be glad you're not paying at POF!

A message from God? Or not?

From a website:
"So why would God answer my friend's prayers? The biggest reason is that she had a relationship with God. She wanted to follow God. And she actually listened to what he said. In her mind, God had the right to direct her in life, and she welcomed him doing just that! When she prayed for things, it was a natural part of her relationship with God. She felt very comfortable coming to God with her needs, her concerns, and whatever issues were current in her life. Furthermore, she was convinced, from what she read in the Bible, that God wanted her to rely on him like that."
Replacing "God" with "Bob" and "the Bible" with "an ancient book"
"So why would Bob answer my friend's prayers? The biggest reason is that she had a relationship with Bob. She wanted to follow Bob. And she actually listened to what he said. How would you treat person B differently from person A? Why?
For a real hoot, try replacing "God" or "Jesus" with "Bob" in message 133.

Why do men ruin relationships with video games?

I suppose I took your statement the wrong way, which is what started the back and forth. I apologized for that.[/quoted]
Accepted. I also, admittedly, opened up a can of worms that I really didn't have the inclination to fish through on this particular thread. There HAS been talk of using video games to do things like teach the counterintuitive basics of particle physics (since the systems these days have superb rendering) and that got me excited, but it's been a while since I've read any more development on that. Nonwithstanding, I still think our reading skill and attention that are collectively more endangered than our hand-eye coord. on the controllers.
private school teachers make some serious cake.. that teachers are all poor by default... well... not where I come from
I make 76% of what my public school counterparts in this district make. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, I make less than even the lowest teacher salary bracket in their survey. Living in the Northeast corridor doesn't help. Teaching's for suckers, IMHO. I stop sucking this June.
Additionally, I have had very little actual sex... lots of self-abuse... very little else...
Try the fleshlight. I'll say no more on the issue.

Okay, Giggle, you've lightened up - I'll go on.
You say,
Really... I seem to remember your opening statement went a little something like this... it's an oldie... but, a sh***.
But that's not a fair statement. I responded very particularly by quoting the OP. Here was the whole first post:
WHY DO MEN RUIN RELATIONSHIPS WITH VIDEO GAMES?
Men don't. Overgrown boys do. Start picking better.
My jab was at people who RUIN relationships with video games. By dropping that, you make it sound like I was saying it about all video game playing. Then, yes, I spun off into a tangent which you led me into, but it's a separate issue. Still, I ask that you not call me nasty for suggesting that it's immature to spoil a relationship with video games, and I am
certainly
not a hypocrite for pointing that out.
For the record, I think everyone ought to play or watch played, or at least read up on what Mario, Zelda, Halo, Zork, and WoW are. (Plus a few others which I can't think of at the moment, and maybe which I don't even know of.) They're cultural touchstones around which multitudes have forged communities and spawned new vocabularies. Video games are an important component of cultural literacy. And if you're too infirm for sport, the hand-eye improvement from some occasional video game playing is great. I don't have some crusade to ban the gosh darn things. ;-)
And by the way, I don't know why you find it fitting to try and make my username more ridiculous... it's already about as lame as it can get, so why don't you find more fertile soil to till.
You're reading way too much into "GiggleP." I had no thought one way or the other.
But, it's all good... I'm sure in the game of life, you still win.
But who are my competitors?
You probably make a lot more money than me
I teach in a private school - don't bet on it.
and have had a lot more sex (that's just about everybody, on both counts).
It's possible, but I don't swap such stories in public.
My eyes! The goggles, they do nothing!
-Said in a thick Teutonic accent, I bet. Eh?

My problem is you're a culture snob.
...
You have no idea how the brain works.
...
I think the media has done more harm to you, than it has to me.
...
Your teacher was an A-hole.... not good enough?
...
Whatever zork ripoff or tic-tac-to clone you tried your hand at, just doesn't count.
GiggleP, you've been assumptive and nasty so I'm not going to continue this conversation and address the points I liked about what you had to say, because you're a loose cannon and it'd be unproductive. Please reply with some more insults and unfounded labels to verify it everyone else.
Most people are not going to invent the next wheel, or read 4 books a month, or paint a meaningful picture, or create a moving piece of music. Not everyone is living life to the max.
In most cases they indeed won't if they're digitally frying their brains for several hours every week.

Hardly an argument you'll get from me on that!
Except:
Video games are ...a great way to enjoy time with friends.
Granted, you won't have a
bad
time, but I can think of a hundred ways to enjoy the time that better enhance us individually as well as our shared bonds. My time is precious. I like to maximize my return.

if you're going to be spouting numbers off like they are facts, you should probably at least attempt to get them right. There are around 300,000 books being published every year in the US alone
And I said "over 100,000." What's your problem?
Would you call a epic play or piece of literature a vehicle for 'delusional desensitizing fantasies'?
When they're fully stripped of the aesthetic of their language, metrics, cultural roots, philosophical insight, staging, accuracy to tradition, and communal effort to produce and experience, then yes: they become "delusional desensitizing fantasies." There's a lot of pap in books, too. Nevertheless, there are also compelling neurological reasons why playing video games is less preferable to reading, regardless of content.
That makes about as much sense as if someone were to say, 'you kids think that when you buy toilet paper, that you're on top of the world, because you can wipe your ass without getting your hands dirty. Well, you're not. The manufacturers are winning. YOU lose.'
I fail to see how choosing one form of diversion or leisure over another to occupy your mind is analogous to foregoing a basic need for civilized life. Maybe you can explain it better?
Do you know what kind of work goes into producing a game?
Yes. I've tried my hand at a few simple ones when I was younger.
What the hell, exactly, is your problem, sir?
The same one I have with much of the mainstream media in general. Their goal is not to make you a better educated, smarter, stronger, healthier, more sophisticated, fuller human being: it's to push product. I don't have anything against the profit motive per se, and I'm aware of the creative competition it's spawned (we'll leave DRMs, platform wars, and other technology stifling aside,), but in the finite span of human life and the tremendous personal rewards to be had and obstacles to overcome, I don't see much time available to waste on video games. Or 95+% of TV. Or 99% of magazines. Or a lot of the internet. Shucks, maybe I'm just a slow learner.
you are demonizing something that simply wants to take its place amongst the possibilities to enjoy.
Video games don't want anything. They're just pieces of plastic, metal, and silicon - no demons. The producers would like you to keep buying more of their product, however. Your enjoyment is only a means to that end.
You and your ilk have lost sight of the shore...
I don't live on the coastline anymore, so you're probably right.
may whatever god or sky computer you worship,
I don't worship.
have mercy on your blighted soul.
What's a soul?
