Has anyone made a point of dating tall women?
Posted: 3/11/2006 10:51:09 PM
I had never objected to dating tall women, but I'd always assumed that an average to shorter woman would end being my girl. I was way wrong.

My girlfriend is 5'11" (compared to my 5'9") and I wouldn't change a centimeter about her.

Guys that cry.....Good or bad?
Posted: 3/11/2006 10:34:55 PM
The way someone cries probably has an effect on its acceptability. Personally, I get fairly emotional and choked up when I get caught in an engaging embrace of the eyes with my girl. I'm not going to sob or get a runny nose or anything. But there is watery build-up that delivers a tear or two when the love we share is clearly being communicated in our stare.

Laughing while you're bleeding
Posted: 2/6/2006 10:02:55 PM
What if you fell while getting into a shower at a hotel by leaning on the towel rack (which apparently wasn't that secure). You crack the back of your head and open a gaping wound. You girl is startled, comes to help, sees you laying on the floor naked and bleeding and chuckles. Is that cruel? I was laughing too. :p

Did you know 3 stitches will set you back over a grand in the states. Thank goodness for travel insurance.

Just be sure you don't treat your women like your gadgets. That is one return that will bite you in the a***.

By the way, you aren't really a customer if you don't make the company any income. Being a returner, you simply cost them money. If it were my business, I'd be happy to never see you in my store.

When to tell you...
Posted: 2/5/2006 2:14:28 AM
Brad - great topic. I used to think about my approach to meeting women online. After trying to craft up some witty profile to show I was just as desirable (if not more) as the AB's out there, I got bored of it. I stopped thinking about it all together. When I wrote my profile up, I put out there what was most relevant in my life.

Because the right girl for me doesn't care about the chair, I don't put it out there upfront. If someone comes along that does seem like a romantic match or someone who I'll likely be friends with - I tell them right away. Just like I don't tell people what kind of car I drive in my profile, they will eventually find out. That way, no assumptions - about the car or chair. :p

The chair has only been an issue to one girl I have dated (and even then it wasn't that critical). In fact, it has been beneficial. I am seeing a girl who is 5'11" right now. I'm not 100% positive that would have happened without the chair as I am just 5'9".

Anyways, good to see another wheeler with a lot of interest from the women on here. Funny how that works - and we don't even have our shirts off. :)

And if I may ladies, if you get the chance to meet this guy - do it. I first met him 11 years ago and he is a 'stand up' guy with a heck of a lot to offer.

Job Interview Question: What would you say one of your faults are?
Posted: 2/4/2006 7:38:36 PM
People tend to get caught up in the 'content' of their job interview answers. Employers are usually more interested in the 'context' of your answer.

i.e. I don't care that you are 5 minutes late, but I do care that you would make excuses for being 5 minutes late. If you are a perfectionist, don't act proud about it etc.

Interviews are really more about your personality and cultural fit.

Run a company and see how you feel about this sort of thing. All you are doing is driving the price up for yourself and others in the future. A slightly capitalistic view, but business owners have families and futures to consider, just like you do. Remember, whoever you work for is helping pay your bills - when you screw over other businesses, you are screwing over employees just like you too.

Murphy has something against me
Posted: 1/30/2006 10:13:06 PM
The infamous Murphy's Law. Somehow, it applies to my dating life more often than not. A few months ago I had the pleasant experience of locking my keys in the car as I was suppose to drop an out of town visitor/date at the airport within 90 minutes. Somehow, this was only training for last night.

For the first time in a while I was genuinely excited to take a certain girl out. To most, she would be considered out of my league (she'd likely be out of anyone's league - but she's not that kind of girl). We have some potential to be a good pair, so I was ready for a nice evening. Of course, Murphy has his way and as we are almost at the restaurant way up on the North Shore, flat tire. Naturally it is pouring out.

Long story short. I wanted to spend what little time I had with the girl in a comfortable restaurant getting to know her in person. I called a tow guy to fix my tire while we ordered. I didn't realize the restaurant was closing early on a Sunday so we were the last couple there. We took our food and found a quiet place to eat and talk. All in all - Murphy has it out for me, but the joke is on him - can you put a price on getting to show/see how one reacts in a 'stressful' situation on the first date.

The girl is fantastic and even more stunning in person, and I hope it is one of those stories I get to repeat over and over to others about 'our first date adventure'.

Does anyone else have Murphy out to get them?

There are different methods monetizing content.

Micro payments: a pay-per-view system where you collect a small amount on every piece of content viewed.

Packages: lump payment that enables access to a limit of content that is depleted per view.

Subscriptions: a term payment that grants access to unlimited content for the period.

You can gather much of the info you need at http://www.paidcontent.org

I can't give you too much info on what approach to take unfortunately as we do not deal with small ventures. But a good method of collecting payments for individuals is PayPal. Good luck.

Ever Wonder What's In Your Perfume/Cologne ?
Posted: 1/27/2006 11:53:21 PM
This stuff is used, however, not in ALL fragrances. Most fragrances are actually synthetic now.

Wikipedia:
Due to demand for ambergris and its high price, replacement compounds have been sought out by the fragrance industry and chemically synthesized. The most important of these is Ambrox, which has taken its place as the most widely used amber odorant in perfume manufacturing. The oldest and most commercially significant synthesis of Ambrox is from sclareol (primarily extracted from Clary sage), although syntheses have been devised from a variety of other natural products, including cis-abienol and thujone. Procedures for the microbial production of Ambrox have also been devised.

To the Men,,,,what is the coolest gift?
Posted: 1/20/2006 11:42:36 PM
If you can look past the obvious financial costs of this gift, it was really fantastic.

Christmas gift from an old girlfriend: my Dad and I are the best of friends but we live in different provinces. Both hockey nuts. He follows the Oilers, I am a raging Canucks fan. She bought each of us flights to Edmonton, hotel for the weekend, and tickets to a Canucks/Oilers game.

The thing that made it such a great gift is we had only been dating for 4 months and she picked up on how important it was that I see my Dad on a regular basis.

It was either that or this really funny pooping reindeer candy dispenser - your pick.

How would you define 'voluptuous/curvy' ?
Posted: 1/19/2006 6:33:37 PM
I think you should rethink this statement:

A woman should have, in my opinion, something between 7 and 14 percent of body fat.

7 percent body fat is basically a professional tri-athlete (and thin one at that). Most healthy women are going to be in the 20 range. I know some very fit women at around 25 percent body fat.

How would you define 'voluptuous/curvy' ?
Posted: 1/18/2006 10:44:00 PM
My definition of voluptuous is Scarlett Johanson. She has full features rather than thin or streamlined features. If my logic is correct: Scarlett = Voluptuous, Scarlett = beautiful, therefore Voluptuous = beautiful.

Straight Edge
Posted: 1/18/2006 10:24:01 PM
It is amazing how much non-drinkers get the gears. In my experience (a LOT of it), those who have an issue with it are usually insecure drinkers; those who do it to fit in, not those who do it for simple enjoyment.

I remember having 10 guys on my hockey team hold me down trying to force alcohol down my throat. Hmmm, I think it was the same guys that took plant jobs and still live with their parents. Interesting.

Cheers.

What was the best kiss you ever had?
Posted: 1/16/2006 7:27:18 PM
Definitely in high school. A bunch of us were at a house party and as I walked by the washroom a girl grabbed me, threw me against the wall and said something to the effect of "you have no choice!" I despised this girl, but her aggression made for a really hot kiss.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with my personality, but to this day, girls seem to be very aggressive towards me. I like that. I think I have only had to make the first move only once - ever. So to me, aggression = good kiss.

A Guy that can sing...A plus...brownie points...love it?
Posted: 1/15/2006 11:15:37 PM
My brother in law played piano and sang a song he wrote to my sister as she walked the aisle at their wedding this summer. I have to admit, I had a tiny tickle in my throat. It was pretty special. Yes, it was my kid sister getting married, but I was moved by the love he showed her through his words. I'm proud to have a guy like that in my family.

Relationships and differing religious philosophies - can it work?
Posted: 1/15/2006 6:57:29 PM
It usually depends on the level of religiosity of each partner. If each person has relatively low religiosity levels, it may not become an issue. The typical pivot point is when children come into the picture.

Will women date a guy with no car?
Posted: 1/13/2006 5:32:23 PM
The extra time you save by owning a car can easily be utilized to do income generating activities that would far surpass the cost of vehicle ownership. Yes, I am an entrepreneur and recognize the time value of money and vice-versa. I realize many people do not have that instinct and are happy (which is perfectly fine and respectable) simply working for others.

I figure I would spend an extra 20-30 hours per month in transit without my vehicle. That adds up to a whole lot more than 1k (or any other perceptually inflated figure you come up with).

The bottom line is, if you take care of your vehicle, it isn't that expensive (no matter what you drive).

Besides, how else am I going to whisk my girl off on a romantic getaway? Two tickets on the greyhound doesn't cut it for me, and likely not for her either.

Ya ya, I am a mini-capitalist, flame away.

Will women date a guy with no car?
Posted: 1/12/2006 10:22:50 PM
I read a lot about how much cheaper it is to not own a car. I don't subscribe to that theory.

I run about $100 bucks a month on gas (no I don't drive an economy car and I live within 30 minutes of my office). Riding the bus is going to average ~$100 a month. So those cancel each other out.

The average amount of car insurance in Vancouver, BC is ~$1300 according to a recent study.

Can one honestly say that the extra time, planning, inconvienience and restriction isn't worth ~$110/month? That is ~$3.50 a day. Could you sacrifice your daily Starbucks coffee? Or that party night at the restaurant/club? Congratulations, you can afford to drive.

Yes, that is a simplified outlook. Yes, this assumes you own a car. Yes, there are always circumstances that trump this viewpoint.

Besides, if you can't afford $110/mo, can you afford to date?

Rent or Own?
Posted: 1/11/2006 12:26:12 AM
Ownership is the way to go in most cases. However, some people get caught up in it. Make sure you don't go mortgage broke. Stay within your means. Rates will cease climbing by the end of this year. Housing starts have begun to decline in many markets and that is often a sign of a shift in supply/demand. The price increases seen during the last 4 years of growth will begin to shrink. Flippers will have less margin of error and their risk increases, again driving down prices.

Good luck! And don't forget to consider a mortgage helper (get an extra bedroom and a roommate).

Kissing and lip gloss..love it..or hate it?
Posted: 1/6/2006 6:01:52 PM
I am a HUGE fan of the gloss. As a lip guy, it is one of the most attractive physical qualities one can enhance, and it takes very little effort. Bonus points for strawberry or watermelon. I miss high school, where every girl wore lip gloss and you could identify them by smell.

Hopefully it never comes to it of course. Most opinions are along the lines of 'who broke up with who' determines what happens to the ring. However, what happens if the guy broke it off because the girl essentially forced the break-up?

You can come up with a hundred ways someone could force someone to break-up with them, use your imagination.

Had the strangest meeting
Posted: 1/5/2006 8:43:01 PM
I had a girl pull a creative 'scope' along similar lines to your experience. About 3.5 years ago I met a girl online (oh boy, I've been at this for a while haven't I?). We had shared photos so we had a general idea of what we both looked like. We planned on meeting up on a Thursday night the following week. On the Monday, someone delivered flowers to me at the office. Not something that happens every day, but I thought nothing of it. It was from her and it was a simple congratulations on... yada yada yada message.

Skip ahead to our first date. Things went great and we ended up driving around the entire city until daybreak. When the sun came up, I noticed a photo in her vehicle's sun visor of her and a friend. She asked if I recognized the other girl. I didn't. She was laughing hysterically to herself by now. She then admitted it was her friend who delivered the flowers, so she could report back on whether I looked good or not.

I didn't recognize her because I never actually saw the flower girl, but I guess she saw me.

Long story short, we ended up dating for a year. Her devious friend scope strategy worked I guess.

As for your guy at the sandwich place - that is not an effective way to meet someone. If he liked you, why not just go for it right then and there?

love at first site?
Posted: 1/3/2006 8:52:36 PM
Amy Bloom (a psychotherapist and author) says "Love at first sight is easy to understand; it's when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle."

I was trying to come up with a great quote on this topic, but anything I came up with was trumped by Ms. Bloom's words.

Fireworks and butterflies???
Posted: 1/2/2006 1:44:07 PM
Some guys go for the gusto on first dates. They try to make sure the butterflies and sparks are at least possible. Some do not. They simply meet to establish that personal line of communication - putting a face to a name if you may.

My theory: getting swept off your feet often leaves you with a sore butt. Try getting gently tipped over an extended period of time, and before you know it, you've been taken off your feet (with no sore butt).

What does a guy have to do to get noticed?
Posted: 1/2/2006 1:10:59 AM
My suggestion would be to use a different photo for your main picture. Odds are people scan by photo (Okay, it is almost a given). You likely just need a closer shot. Something with contrast. You're not a shabby looking guy, it should work like a charm. Think of it like a marketer would - with so many advertisements out there for so many products, what stands out. Apple does it with vibrant colors and simplicity. I'd bet that combo would work in online dating as well. Good luck.

Judging (accurately) by appearances!
Posted: 12/29/2005 9:37:58 PM
The process of quick judgements is often called 'thin slicing'. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book that addresses the topic called 'Blink'. Not my favorite read ever, but it had some really good theories - not so many tactics.

If you are interested in how to effectively determine whether someone is a match in a limited amount of time, think about reading the book (and take it with your standard grain of salt).

Where would be your dream place to meet someone???
Posted: 12/28/2005 11:48:45 PM
I noticed someone in an airport at 5 am, we happened to catch the same flight to the same destination, then proceeded to get on the same bus to the same cruise ship. We completely hit it off and spent the week hanging out together.

After losing touch for 8 years (we were from different cities), we ran into each other in a mall (I think Chariots of Fire started to play as we yelled each others name and bolted to each other for the embrace - a total movie scene). A little bit of serendipity. Lots more to that story...

Posted: 12/26/2005 9:33:17 PM
Has she given him any CLEAR signals indicating interest beyond a hug? If he cares about her, he may want the first one to be 'right', memorable, or the like. Make sure she has made herself available to be kissed - leaning in his direction, scooting over closer to him when sitting, extended arm touching, yada yada. If her clear signs don't do the trick - simple, ask him why he hasn't.

Genetics are often not associated with many disabilities. Acquired disabilities are fairly prevelant as well.

Besides, this is an age of intellectual evolution, not physical evolution. Humans are at the top of the food chain because we can think more effectively, not run faster.

Girls and Cars
Posted: 12/22/2005 10:03:09 PM
For some folks, driving = fun.

Personally, I have had just as much (if not more) fun driving my first car (a sweet 1988 Brown and Burgundy Dodge Aries K car) as what I now drive.

It is less about what you drive that gets a good women's attention and more about the fun you have in the car.

Truth is, you can fun in anything you drive if you have the right people with you. THAT is attractive.

A bad tooth to gum ratio. I can get past it, but it takes a bit of concentration. I am a mouth guy, what can I do.

People who have over 50 favorites

@sexyandbrainy - I was about to say the same thing. If you have something legit to offer, it doesn't matter if the woman your are emailing gets 2... or 200 emails a day. You will stand out. Get some confidence and stop complaining about getting no replies. I can guarantee the guys getting responses act like they deserve responses, regardless of how popular the woman. If you don't think you can stand out, you don't.

My Weight and My Boyfriend

If you did lose the weight, he'd find something else to criticize. Get rid of him.

If you want to drop weight, do it for you - not him. First loves are tough to let go, but you're a pretty girl, the next is just around the bend. Best to you.

I was contacted by a woman with 800 favorites. 800!! That is 10% of the amount of people logged in at any one time during the day. Don't sweat being compared to others. That is life. It would happen online and offline. People with plenty of favorites can be just as serious as anyone else. Guys, you need some confidence.
