Is the recession really over?
Posted:
10/26/2009 9:24:06 AM
That's exactly what was said on the news...the job market is the last to recover from a recession....the rest of the economy has to improve before the jobs open up again.
Sad...but seems that's what is happening.
But...my father always told me that when the country begins to get out of control with raising prices on things so high...that the only way for things to get affordable again is to have a recession...it's sad that we don't seem to learn from our mistakes...but I guess as long as people will pay exhorbitant prices for things...we will continue to have this rollercoaster ride.

No Kat...she doesn't live with me. She did ONCE but I kicked her out after she started allowing her dumazz boyfriend start spending the night without even asking me. Now...remember...this is MY son's...EX-wife LOL
I thought maybe I could be a good influence on her on how to be a good mom...cause I knew that my son (who has custody) was headed for trouble...
But...you can see how THAT worked out....She lives with the boyfriend..My Son is in Jail..and the kids live with ME ! (I'm not complaining...I just don't GET IT)
And...
I think the grandson understands...he just knows...his mom.

Flying monkeys....Witches...short fat man behind a curtain scaring children...water melting flesh...thousands of midgets who can't talk right...Tornado's landing a house on people...little dog being tormented into fear!!!!
What mother in her right mind FORCES her children to sit and watch that movie just because it's a classic???!!!

Yeah Kat...I know
(regarding the scooter)
Folks...One think I have noticed...is that when my guy and I are around some people...it seems that they think they have to go out of their way to say things about the 'black people' that they know...or work with...or play ball with. Its like they are sometimes at a loss as to WHAT to say...or how to act...so they 'over compensate'...It's actually pretty funny because it is SOOOO SOOOO obvious. I usually just pass it off and do whatever I can to make them more comfortable...then when we get in the car to come home..we laugh about how 'lost' some people really are around different races...and around mixed couples.
But...doesn't stop us from doing anything we want to do or going wherever we want to go...and most people? well...they finally do come around and get over it.
Just depends on how we were raised I guess. If an adult was not raised in an area where there were people of other races...but they know from their religious upbringing that Jesus DOES love all his children no matter what their color...then it just takes time for them to get used to the whole thing.

Rusty...yes...I DO see the entire package.
I have also seen things sometimes from his side...I've SEEN for my self how ignorant some people are...and I have heard the comments at times from the 'peanut gallery' LOL
I really don't give a rats azz...but it is good to see where it was that he's come from.
But folks...it does work both ways....
He and I were in a fast food restaurant in the city near where his home is...waiting on our order inside. A small boy was just being a boy...driving his mommy nuts...and looked up at me and said "What are YOU doing here?" I just put my hand under his little chin and said...."The same thing that YOU are...waiting on my food....Did you have a fun day at school today?" He began conversing with me...and we had quite a nice conversation before our food was ready. When he left...he smiled at me and told me 'g'bye'.....So...maybe...in some small way...I made a POSITIVE impression on that little boy.

Yeah...I do.....
I was with a group of the POF singles in an establishment about 4 years ago...was on my second long island tea...noticed these two black guys sitting at the table behind us....THEY were the ONLY blacks in the establishment....I went over and said ..."Okay...is either one of you gonna dance with ME?"....of course...the booze was giving me nerve I might not have had otherwise. One of the guys pointed to the other one and said..."HE will"....and...the rest is HISTORY!
I have one of the sweetest..most gentle...most considerate men in the world now...He wasn't there to pick up on anyone...he wasn't there to get him a WHITE woman...he was simply there listening to the music and I changed his world.
I got comments from a 'few' of the people we were with...saying dumb things like...Hey Jazz....how do you like your coffee....but...I just ignored them and had a really great evening with him...getting to know him as a person.
It was funny after that....how many of my girfriends...began to express how they actually preferred darker skinned men!
It's been four years now....He used to be the ONLY black that joined our events...now he is one of many....
No matter what we think...this country is still very racist....We are TRYING hard to not be...and...we have come a long way....but there are still those people who no matter what they do...end up sticking there damn foot in their mouth when it comes to race differences. When I am with his family (he has a very large family) "I" am the only white person. I am treated with respect...I am loved by them...and I don't even SEE the color difference. All I see is a wonderful loving family...and I am blessed to be part of it.
People...I am almost 58 years old...I have seen...and lived through some of the roughest times this country has had when it comes to race issues...but I sure am glad that I haven't let that turn me into a bitter person.

This thread is cracking me up...I've been in POF for a long time..and another local site prior. We ALWAYS got accused of being cliquish...and I can see why someone being 'new' may feel that it's like that...BUT...once you get over your inhabitions of walking up and talking to people you've never met before...and...if you SMELL good
you quickly get over that.
It's pretty intimidating to walk into a room of strangers who've been partying together for several months..and you're the newbie.
I don't think that there is even one person who hasn't experienced exactly what hippie was describing...
But...the thing that needs to be remembered...is that it's okay to walk on to the next group of people if you feel as if you are being 'snubbed'.
When I plan events...I try really hard to not exclude anyone...but sometimes when there are SO many people...it's difficult.
DON'T give up ! Overall...we are pretty kewl people....
EVEN THOSE WHO HAVE HORNS !!!

Previously...HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Gramma !
Yes...as said early in this thread...smoking pobably pretty much just aggrevates a condition that one already has...which probably speeds up their deterioration.
What it boils down to with me more than anything ...is I just don't like the physical effects that I get when I'm around the smoke..ie: eyes burning ...throat hurting...along with the smell on my clothing and body. Even when I get around someone who is a heavy smoker..the smell on their clothing and hair takes my breath sometimes.
I am beginning to think that it's a reformed smoker 'thing'...LOL

Kat...I've heard that menthol is a more addicting cig...Don't know personally...but those were what my dad used to smoke...I never did...I've ALSO heard that the tobacco companies ARE putting more junk in the tobacco these days...and that makes them more addicting than cigarettes of past.
I've never really researched any of this...it's all hearsay...I'm just happy that I didn't have all of the withdrawals that some do.
My sister stopped by using that chantix...did really good for about a year then started up again...which I don't get....she was so happy that she'd made it a year...WHY in the world would she do it again !

I think it's called a 'clothespin"????
I LUCKILY didn't go through all of those things when I quit...
I picked up my first Grandchild...had a damn cig in my hand and thought 'WHAT in the hell are you doin Jazz!!!"...put it down..threw out the rest of the pack and just quit...decided I wanted to see that baby grow up and graduate from college...she will be 19 this year.
Now..I'm not saying I didn't have the 'cravings'...but didn't have the physical symptoms....i just didn't know what to do with my hands ! Took up needlepoint that year...Guess what everyone in the family got for Christmas !!!!

Very good point Angel....regarding the government taking away our 'rights' on a broader scale.
and...just so you know...
I DO consider you a 'considerate' smoker....the majority of the POF smokers that attend regular events ARE ....but it's not always POF who attends our events on our scheduled nights.
My dad was a very heavy smoker and would just about choke us to death in the car on vacations...and was one of these who would purposely blow smoke your direction if you complained about his smoking...would stand there and rant and rave that NO ONE was going to tell HIM that he couldn't smoke...and that the chances of dying from smoking were very slim. He said this all the way up until he had his third massive stroke...at which time he couldn't smoke anymore...because the nursing home we had to put him in...was smoke free. Funny how some things work.

Yes...you are exactly correct.
The doctors DID tell us when my mom died...that the condition she had when she died WAS aggrevated by the second hand smoking in the home...along with the area she lived in as a child...mostly consisting of manufacturing plants...these two things together shortened her life by approx. 20 years.
So..you are right...these conditions aren't 'caused' by the smoke...but...sad that there are people who didn't realize...like my folks back in 1983 when mom died...that it was in fact that serious of an issue.
Here's something kinda scary...my 39 year old son last year had a massive heart attack which resulted in a quad by-pass. He called me from home..told me his symptoms..I directed him to take an asprin and get to the ER immediately..he was scared ..of course..and on the way like a dummy..lit up a cigarette...he said he took one drag off of it..and as he did ...it felt like his chest had just caved in to his backbone...NEEDLESS to say...that incident was all he needed to stop smoking !
I think nowadays...we are just more educated as to the 'effects'...not the 'causes'...so it makes us think twice about such things.
and...again...I do...and will continue to attend the smoking venues..and I do leave when it begins to get to me...I just hate leaving early when I'm having fun !
My bodyguard ..on the other hand...gets somewhat radical (He's never smoked...nor has anyone in his family)

I wonder what non-smokers did before all this. Just sit at home all the time?

Eric...I personally was not attempting to be petty in any way shape or form.
When a question is 'asked'...I felt I had the right to answer it in that post..which I did.
I ALSO think that a person DOES have a right to attend an event...smoking establishment or not...but I also think that if it IS a smoking venue...that people should know so they can be prepared.
And...in all fairness...
I AM curious as to how others feel about this subject...and what THEY do...
Maybe I'm the only one in the world who feels the way that I do about the subject...who knows?
Judi...I respect your post...and not one time have "I" ever emplied that smokers are bad people..I'd be really hypocritical then...since I used to smoke over a pack a day! And..yes...the habit IS hard to break...You GOTTA WANNA...just like any other habit.
Now...comparing it to heroin? I'd have to read more about that comparison....I don't think I'd want to test that one out personally :)
Anyway...
I can take some of what everyone has posted here and understand it. And..honestly...I do feel sorry for the establishments who are losing business...if that's the case...from the non smoking bans that the cities are putting into place...and...I also feel sorry for my grandson who now has asthema because of second hand smoke..and who's life could be shortened because of it.
The Tax idea is probably a VERY good idea rather than a ban...
Because...I think...if someone wants to go somewhere bad enough...they will go no matter if there is smoking or not.
I had FINALLY talked my body guard into going to that past event for at least a little while..(HE is VERY adamant about this subject..and has been known to leave a restaurant even after being served)..but we had a family emergency happen and ended up in Sedalia that day/night...sitting in a hospital waiting room. My not coming had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the place was a smoking venue...but it WAS nice to know that they still were so I knew what to expect.
All good posts here...
Some very good ideas...and interesting to see how others feel/deal with the issue !

wow...now I'm REALLY glad I don't smoke !! LOLOL (and only drive 10 minutes to work ) ...that's only one a day ..going both directions...AND...I live in the country...so maybe that knocks that 1/4 pack down also?
SOMEthing will get all of us eventually....I'm just not in any hurry !!!
Bryon....the 'private club' establishments DO put those signs on their doors. I guess all establishments can go 'private' if they want...I'm not sure what the requirements are...but I know of a couple places in Kansas that have done that and all they do is sit at the door when people enter.
I won't STOP going to places where my friends go because of the smoking...I just prefer it if it's breatheable air...and I don't have to leave so early when it's just getting wound up !
I used to work with a lady who smoked in her car coming to work...then would spray this cheap perfume on when she got out of it...she'd come into the cubicle next to mine and I would have to hold my breath for 30 minutes before it died down ....I think I could have handled the smoke...OR the cologne...but not mixed together !!!
And...AGAIN...I know that I did all of these things probably also...and I'm sure that I offended people around me...and no one was going to tell me what to do...but...now that I don't smoke...I feel really bad sometimes ...cause I have been and am on both sides of the issue !

Oh yeah...coats are impossible to get smoke out of...I've even hung mine outside to air out and it still smells.
Here's a cute/sad story....
My two grandkids have moved in with me while their dad is incarcerated in a DOC rehab program....I moved them from their mobile home about a month ago.
My granddaughter has been washing her clothes ever since...because my son smoked heavily...and had NUMEROUS people in and out of the house who did as well.
I really didn't know if it bothered my grandson or not until the other night...my neighbor walked in to use my phone. While he was sitting at the table on the phone...my grandson came over and whispered in my ear..."gramma...he stinks like my clothes used to"....AND...he told me that the kids at school weren't teasing him anymore about smelling :(
I'm personally glad that they have started putting the smoking bans into affect...and maybe I'm more grichy than some...but 26 years ago...my mom died of a lung condition at age 59...and the doctors TOLD us it was normally only seen in people who live in homes where there are smokers...so...she literally died from second hand smoke...her dad..her mom...and her husband...all smoked ! She never HAD too.
It's really sad when children are being exposed because they don't have a voice like adults...and I was one of the guilty ones once...who told my kids to stop ragging at me...when they would tell me my smoke was bothering them.
I think my stopping cigs was one of my biggest accomplishments...because it wasn't easy...and I still managed to kick it....I've never regretted it.

ROFL here...yeah....if you drink enough...NOT MUCH DOES matter LOL
I just don't like to stay at home when my friends are going out...and leaving early sometimes is a bummer ! I went thru the same 'routine' as you pretty much when I'd get home
I find it interesting the creative ways that places come up with to not have to follow the laws on smoking bans...like...setting your business up as a 'private' establishment...then all you have to do is have someone sit at the door and greet the people coming in....There's always some way.

It was in one of the event threads...and in there whoever starts the thread has deletion capabilities.
I'm just curious as to how people actually do feel about these smoking bans...and if they would have done anything different?
Like...I think...all eating establishments should be non smoking...but if it's a restaurant/bar...that they not allow smoking during just the dinner hours...
or...
Like many places are doing now...make a really nice smoking 'area' for the smokers.
RC's in Martin City has done that...they put a tent structure on their patio that they heat/cool...for smoking.
