When I said right, I did not necessarily mean Republicans. There are those on the right who are not repubs. And I have read and heard that this is a 'right leaning' organization. So what.

Significant lead in polls for McCain

Seriously though, I think whomever said that the debates should help clarify and narrow things down for me was probably dead on. Let's hope that they start soon.
I think they are supposed to start tomorrow night.
As far as me representing Obama, I don't really feel like I do. I feel more like I represent the policies. I would be championing anyone who was promising to fix healthcare and the deficit and do something smart about the war in ways I think make sense. It just happens to be Obama this time around. And my 'enthusiasm' for him stems from the fact that
finally
....someone who I think can help lift us up has a real shot at being elected.
The past 8 years have been pretty depressing, watching our government, whom we were all raised to respect and admire, tromp all over the constitution and take take take from the American people who they were elected to serve. This administration does not realize that they were elected to serve us, not the other way around. And it upsets me that they've been given free reign and abused it. They feel they have no accountability. It's time for a change, and McCain is not it.

Less than 200 people who post in those forums.......
I wonder if you could also share the statistics on the number of people who post in sex and dating, single parents, and ask a girl/guy?
The single parents forums are much worse in terms of bickering in my opinion, and the jabs are much more mean spirited and personal there. I would have gladly voted on this if we were given the opportunity.

Gore, Kerry and now Obama all have two flaws in common....being weak candidates and their single biggest flaw are their supporters. A weak cadidate has a chance to win if they get real lucky but nobody can win if the supporters continually blow it for them with the vicious hate they use.
That's a load of crap.
You cannot show one piece of evidence that a candidate has lost because of his supporters. Unless you show the demographics on who was expected to turn out for Kerry but didn't, I suggest you find a new talking point.

It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin

Not only does Sarah Barracuda hate wildlife, the environment, you, me, and books, she also hates the Special Olympics.
http://thinkprogress.org/tag/palin/
It’s a stretch to say she “pushed” for any policy improvements. Though Palin did sign a law increasing special education funding in Alaska, “she had no role whatsoever” in its development, according to the bill’s author, Rep. Mike Hawker (R). Moreover, as governor, Palin vetoed $275,000 in Special Olympics Alaska funds (Page 100, SB 221 with vetoes), slashing the organization’s operating budget in half.

I doubt they cleared it with the big honchos at the Obama campaign. Seems the Obama campaign has a mind of it's own and like some kind of inch worm, one part doesn't know what the other part is doing -- Obama tells them to back off something and this forum and the blogs are alive with exactly what Obama ordered them not to talk about. It's like Obama's supporters just don't get it. Not a very organized group at all, imo.
Bloggers have no ties to the campaign staff. They are their own voice, their own entity. And for you to let bloggers and people on this forum (regarding your comment in another thread--way to go, camp Obama) get that far into your head as to change your mind one way or another is silly. I don't speak for Obama, I speak in favor of him. No wonder indecision is a problem here.....you don't know which way is up. We have to stay grounded in our core beliefs.

Go ahead and google it yourself. There is nothing positive on the web about this site. It is propaganda...and if it weren't, why would they only choose to distribute these videos to the swing states? Go ahead and be sick if you want, SL, but as a 'former democrat and Hillary supporter', if you can't see through these games, you should see an eye doctor.

So newspapers, which are private enterprises, don't get to decide who they will allow to pay them to distribute something?
So consumers have no right to question the advertising of the paper they buy?

I have heard the mom saying "who's to say someone didn't put a body in the trunk after it was impounded?" Yeah...these people are going to have to move to Switzerland or wherever JonBenet's parents moved until they (unlike I think will happen here) were found to be innocent. I don't know how many of you are parents, but there is no way I could be separated from my 3 yr old for this long and not be totally losing it. She was reported to be on her m y s p a c e page giggling back and forth with her friends when she was home this last time. There's no way this little yutz is not guilty.

Should Candidates' Kids Be Prohibited from Deploying?
Posted:
9/16/2008 5:42:47 PM
I get it. It has more to do with looking smart than actually answering the question.
How does the question
Why do you say this? Do our treaty obligations depend on who the President is?
And my response
The answer is: NO. It's not supposed to anyway, but since McCain aligns with Bush so fervently, and has stated that he is in support of striking first when we ~feel~ threatened, I would guess that McCain as President would disallow any and all rules much like our current dictator-I mean president. That do it for ya?
Not answer it for you? I don't need to cite treaty obligations to answer how I answered. I answered it, you just didn't like the answer. Sorry 'bout your luck.

I wonder what areas of Michigan (what papers used to reach them) were targeted.
This was the Grand Rapids Press. There was not one in the Detroit Free Press, and there was not one in the Muskegon Chronicle. (I'm a coupon clipper so I get all of these and sometimes the Trib too).

Well how am I going to show factual references to the treaty obligations when I am supposing something based on the current state of the country? I'm not going to go chasing around for treaty obligations just to post them and then say what I'm already saying. If you wanna, have at it, honey. I have somewhere I have to be. mbuh bye

Who got one of the "Obsession" DVD's in their Sunday Paper?
Posted:
9/16/2008 3:09:17 PM
I wonder if people have heard about this. I got, in the Sunday paper, an hour long DVD entitled
Obsession-Radical Islams's War Against the West
. It boasts that it is a film about "the radical thread of Islam to Western Civilization. Using unique footage from Arab television, it reveals an 'insider's view' of the hatred the Radicals are teaching, their incitement of global jihad, and their goal of world domination. The film also traces between the parallels between the Nazi movement of World War II, the Radicals of today, and the Western world's response to both threats".
It has a website, and appears to be put out by The Clarion Fund, based in NY. Personally, I am livid. Michigan is a swing state, and I heard on the news last night that these DVD's were distributed in all of the swing states. Of course it's got no mention of the campaign or why now was such a time to give away free hour-long DVD's, but I am planning on calling the paper and asking them why they allowed this. I think it's a disgusting ploy by the right to hand us more fear.

Palin's Favorability Numbers are dropping

Well, she's officially a Bush-babe. The GOP is trying to get her one of his famous get-out-of-jail-free passes....imagine that.
http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-politics/20080916/Palin.Troopergate/
JUNEAU, Alaska — Five Republican state lawmakers filed suit Tuesday to end the bipartisan investigation into Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of the public safety commissioner even though the vice presidential candidate once said she welcomed the probe into allegations of abuse of power.
The lawsuit called the investigation "unlawful, biased, partial and partisan." None of the lawmakers who filed the suit in Anchorage Superior Court serves on the bipartisan Legislative Council that unanimously approved the investigation.
The scandal known as "Troopergate" gained national attention after Republican presidential candidate John McCain chose Palin as his running mate. Since then, Palin and the McCain campaign have sought to distance Palin from the controversy and have taken actions that could slow its resolution until after the November election.
Palin fired public safety commissioner Walt Monegan in July. Weeks later, it emerged that Palin, her husband, Todd, and several high-level staffers had contacted Monegan about state trooper Mike Wooten, who had gone through a nasty divorce from Palin's sister before Palin became governor. While Monegan says no one from the administration ever told him directly to fire Wooten, he says their repeated contacts made it clear they wanted Wooten gone.
Palin maintains that she fired Monegan over budget disagreements, not because he wouldn't dismiss her ex-brother-in-law. Still, she said in July that she'd welcome and cooperate with the investigation ordered by the Legislative Council. "Hold me accountable," said had said.
McCain campaign spokesman Ed O'Callaghan now calls the investigation "tainted."
Alaska's House Speaker, a Republican who voted to authorize the review two months ago, on Tuesday questioning its impartiality.
Rep. John Harris wrote that what "started as a bipartisan and impartial effort is becoming overshadowed by public comments from individuals at both ends of the political spectrum." His comments were in a letter to the Democratic state Sen. Kim Elton, the committee chairman.
On Tuesday, three state representatives and two state senators sued Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who is overseeing the investigation; Juneau Democratic Sen. Kim Elton, who heads the Legislative Council; independent investigator Steve Branchflower; and the Legislative Council itself.
The lawsuit seeks to either delay the investigation until after the Nov. 4 general election or remove French and Elton.
"There is no nonpartisan reason to complete this investigation until after the election," said Anchorage attorney Kevin G. Clarkson. "We just want to take the politics out of it and bring fairness back into it."
Clarkson said he and a nonprofit legal firm in Texas, Liberty Legal Institute, were donating their work on the suit. A phone message for French was not immediately returned.
The Legislative Council, made up of four Democrats and eight Republican, voted unanimously to investigate the circumstances of Monegan's dismissal. Although Monegan was an at-will employee who could be fired for almost any reason, lawmakers wanted to see whether Palin tried to use her office to settle a personal score with Wooten.
Last week the state Senate Judiciary Committee voted to issue subpoenas for Todd Palin as well as nearly a dozen others and to gain phone records of a top aide to the governor. The subpoenas seek to compel their cooperation in the investigation.
O'Callaghan said Monday that Sarah Palin, who was not subpoenaed, was unlikely to speak to Branchflower and that he didn't know if Todd Palin would challenge his subpoena. At the same time, the campaign released e-mails it claimed supported Sarah Palin's assertion that disagreements over budget were behind Monegan's firing.
Among the e-mails released was a farewell note by Monegan. In it, he suggested the governor had reason to believe she had lost his support, and he urged his former colleagues to communicate better with her.
"For anyone to lead effectively they must have the support of their team, and I had waited too long outside her door for her to believe that I supported her," he wrote. "Please, choose a different path."
Palin's lawyer has sought to have the three-member state Personnel Board take over to investigation, alleging that public statements made by French indicated the probe was politically motivated. French had said the results of the investigation could constitute an "October surprise" for the McCain campaign, and he later apologized.

That's because people are finding out more about her than McCain did before he asked her to run with him. He thinks America is going to blindly go along with this, and I think people should be ticked about that. He wasted a perfectly good chance to pick someone of actual political value, and he's counting on people voting with their emotions instead of their intellect. Bad move.

Which states will election come down to?
Posted:
9/16/2008 2:37:55 PM
Douglas, someone told me today that "they" are saying the same thing you did about Michigan going red or staying home because of Kilpatrick. That's the first time I've heard it, and you're much closer to it all than I am, so I'll take your word that's what they're feeling. But I have faith that our great state will come through. I don't think we've voted republican in a presidential election in a long time, have we? I know in the last two we didn't, beyond that I'd have to check. But we are in such a free fall right now, I don't see how anyone could be on the fence. I don't see how anyone could let Kwame Kilpatrick and his nasty antics get in the way of this extremely important election. I think Michigan will do better under a democratic president, under McCain I think we'll be just one big ghost town. I sincerely hope that people are over the sting of what their mayor did and realize the importance of electing Obama in November.
That said, the states to watch are going to be MI, WI, and PA and VA in my opinion. It looks like Florida has swung red.

Sarah is so happy her son is going over there because she "hasn't given Iraq much thought". Wait till she has some time to think about it.
How do you figure that when more and more troops are being sent home from iraq? We are on our way out of Iraq.
Let's talk about Iran, shall we? Russia? We let McCain in the White House and I'm telling you, we will be in a permanent state of war.

No. It does not bother me. Because McCain said it talking about Hillary's policies, just as Obama said it about McCain's policies. Don't be so touchy. It's a turn of phrase. Something that could be said that we might worry about is:
He's just a community organizer....pffft.
Do you see the difference between attacking an issue and attacking a person? If Obama wanted to go on the attack, don't you think that they'd be going after the pregnant daughter issue? Don't you think they'd be laughing it up onstage about her lack of knowledge?
Obama and Biden are taking the high road, and McCain and Palin could stand a lesson.

this is for post 2325
Oh come ON already. You think anyone really cares about her hairdo and her outfits??? Saying "obama was clearly scowling", "sarah palin has obvious happiness on her face"...is just fluff and nonsense, it's
your
point of view. Personally I think the look on her face when she said "In what respect
Charlie
" looked like a major dumbass...but I don't use it in a post to get people to think I know what I'm talking about. Because when you judge the look on someone's face you don't even know, and say that other people care about how she wears her hair and what outfits they chose for her, you obviously have nothing else to say to promote her.
If you want to stick to the facts, stick to the facts. She doesn't know what she's doing, other than to read cue cards and deliver a rude joke. She has societal views that are not the mainstream, and she wants to make us all have them too. She has a very shady career past with the abuse of power charges. She lies about pretty much everything that's come out of her mouth, from her record as mayor to her record as governor. She even just FLIP FLOPPED on her promise to comply with the people investigating her. She said a month ago that she would cooperate fully, now she says she will not participate. Gee, I wonder why, sounds like pleading the 5th to me, maybe she's afraid what they'd find with her cooperation would hurt her little run to the White House. Without her cooperation, she can say "it's all lies...it's all lies".....this woman makes me ill. She is the political equivalent of blasphemy, and she is not even in the same league as McCain, Obama, and Biden.
I can hear her on the tv right now LYING and trashing Obama
yet again
. I'd like to trip her.

^^ If it were anyone else, I would have to say no, I can't imagine it. But McCain is pretty much a household word, everyone knows who he is, even the people that don't know many senators at all. And he used to be quite well liked as well. Hell, if it were 4 yrs ago, I'd be voting for him.

The only candidate out of the 4 right now who does not have a child in the military serving or having served in Iraq is Obama. Joe Biden's son is going over there for a second deployment soon. McCain's son I believe is still over there, and Palin's son as we all know just got sent last week. Pretty soon all our kids will be there.

What Biden Brings To The Democratic Ticket!
Posted:
9/15/2008 10:51:19 PM
Change from what ?? The same old liberal policies Biden has been toting for the last 40 years ? Where has that gotten us
Change from the miserable policies and personalities that have led America down the toilet?
Palin, is the real deal, more "citizen" than politician, and someone who sincerely walks the walk of her beliefs. Far less likely to "make nice" with the liberals, and bend over, while the leftists stick it to the taxpayers.
How is that change? Isn't Bush the president everyone wanted to have a beer with because he seemed so 'average joe'? And when have Bush and Cheney ever "made nice" with the liberals? This is what people want change from, and yes, even some of you righties want less partisan politics as well.
Some
of you are smart enough to know that nothing gets done when there is too much partisanship bickering.
Hello.....change means change from the failed administration that we have now who has a 22% approval rating. Change means change from the secrecy, lies and withholding of information from the citizens of this country. Change means anything BUT Bush. Biden today gave McCain a new nickname.....Bush 44.

I would just like to point out that while McCain seems to have eked out a 1-3 point lead;
#1 Obama has not declined, McCain has simply finally climbed a bit
#2 Neither one of them have pushed past 50%
#3 Obama is still drawing more money and bigger crowds. He raised 66 million in August, a record for any presidential candidate ever. McCain raised 47. **
McCain boasted a crowd of 23,000 the other day, but the fire marshall of that town estimated it to be more like 8,000. But it's better than the hundreds he was drawing.
**These numbers are approximated based on memory and I did not google citations to post this. The reader assumes their own right to Google before bashing me.

I don't think it will happen that way this time. People who are in their 40s and 50s and have never once voted are registering to vote. People in their 20s are doing the same thing. Why do you think they're going to go to the trouble of registering if they're going to stay home? People know this is an important election. Obama has inspired them much more than Kerry ever did.

[t seems to me that it would be wonderful if Obama responded to panic, and switched VP candidates. It would be one more indicator that he's an empty suit, with nothing much to him, beyond slogans.
That's why he will not do it, he's not an empty suit. But you go on and keep hope alive. Good luck. ;)

Christian radicals are or should be no more acceptable or welcome , IMO, for public office -- in this ostensibly officially secular nation -- than Muslim (or Jewish) radicals would be.
And now on to the one candidate who is actually a part of a radical religious sect....Sarahhhh Palinnnnn!

As upset as I get about the abortion issue, I don't know if McCain would be able to change it like he's pledged to do. I have hope that we would move forward as a society instead of falling backward into the abyss of the 1940's, but then again I'm surprised by people every day.
The one issue we do need to get control of, and that is actually something of dire consequence, is the environment. That's something we can do something about. That's something that has long been neglected and we're now seeing evidence of it. They want all these babies to be born, but they won't have a place to live.
We're not going to stop abortions, even if they give rights back to the states. They've been going on since the dawn of time in one form or another (inducing miscarriage). But we do have a chance to get on track with the environment.

Will Obama Take Biden Off The Dem Ticket?

I mentioned polls, in context of noting a decline for Obama. 6 weeks ago, he led by 13%. Now he's down -2%. He's declined from +6% prior to the conventions, to -2% now, after the conventions. That's relevant, perhaps, to the VP candidates. Just citing the polls, out of context, is not, IMO
If that's what you want to talk about, you might want to read my post up there. Obama has not declined, McCain's simply bounced up a little. And again, neither one of them are above 50%. Chuck Todd also said once that whomever is ahead on Oct. 15, that's your winner.

Palin and Biden Revealed on CNN. What do you think?

The election of a woman for VP and henceforth President would be far more electrifying than ANY man but of course the left would ONLY want her if she is one of theirs as evidenced by the so called "free" press.
No, that's not true. I think people have a lot of respect for smart women, and sure it'd be a cool thing for a woman to get in the White House, R or D. Note I said *respect for
smart
women*. Palin is not right for this level of government. She's far too intent on pushing her own agenda on the citizens.
~as an aside, am I the only one who thinks Nona and Blacksheep are going to start making out any second?

For good or ill, this election will turn on the economy
Yes, that is the truth. I think the economy has even overtaken the war in importance to voters at this point in time. All I have to say to McCain when he says the economy is fundamentally strong is, come to Michigan. Don't go to tiny white bread Grand Haven to get your hot dog next time, try a dog in Flint or Detroit.
This article helped me understand both of their economic plans pretty well, and I really stink at the money matters.

It will be interesting to see who does what at the debate and how wonky the polls go then.

I wrote a paper in college which I still stand by today. I argued that public policy usually changes incrementally. It's kind of like the football on a football field. You don't usually see too many hail mary passes to the inzone.
What's an "inzone"??
I can't take anyone seriously who uses a sports analogy but doesn't know what the *f* an "end zone" is.

Obama
the liar this week......
McCain lies too. A lot. And he has "lied" about his religion before as well. He even flip flopped on that one at one point. So now what? You gonna write in the Holy Mother?

Personally, I think the decline had set in. As people get to know Obama, more and more of them turn away.
Chuck Todd (MSNBC's numbers guy) pointed out tonight that while McCain has had a bounce and his numbers are climbing, Obama's numbers
have not dropped
. And neither one of them is at 50%
still

I don't think identifying with any religion is a requirement for the job he's going for, is it? If it is, we should really have the ACLU look at that.

So, if you see my dilemma, then you'll understand that I now have no freaking clue who I'm going to vote for and am thus in a quite miserable state of limbo at the moment, still trying to right myself and decide once and for all. End of rant.
Take heart, SL. The first debate will happen this week and that might help you decide. Debates are a little less like stump speeches, though I roll my eyes when they answer the question with a non-answer that ends up turning into the speech they already gave 58 million times. I think with these two we'll have candidates who honestly want to make their policies known. As much as I think McCain's policies suck, I think he believes in them, so we should have a fairly good debate. That said, maybe you should go about your decision making process a bit differently. You said you were torn after Obama's convention speech, but then wowed back to McCain after seeing Palin. Now you know more about her and realize she might not be a good choice for you. In other words, and I'm not trying to be condescending here, don't go for the dazzle. Go for the substance. Maybe after the debates go back to the US Senate website and check out who voted on what and what bills they worked on and how you feel about them. Check out their websites and look at the issues. But I think you should do it without the tv on in the background. lol JMHO.

Things I Find Odd

slysterling, just because I haven't mentioned my children and future grandchildren doesn't mean they are not on my mind when I consider a candidate.
It's simple for me:
Democrat=party of Bill Clinton=budget surplus
Repub=party of Reagan and Bush=economic demise.
Democrat=greener thinkers
Repub=not too environmentally conscious.
Democrat=better programs and plans for education
Repub=school of choice, which failed, and the threat of turning education on its' ear with creationism and little sex education. (This one may or may not happen, but it's a buzzword, we all know it).
Those are the HUMONGOUS moose on the table in this election. If we do not address the economy and the environment, there will be nothing left and no one to enjoy it. We need education picked back up off the floor, because our schools are passing people through just to pass them through, and China/Japan have sailed well past us years ago. Obama's got the best economic plan, the best plan for the environment, and the best ideas for education.. McCain is eh--ok on the environment, but with his ties to all the lobbyists who knows if that will change once he's elected. His economic I.Q. is bottom of the class. And as far as schools, I did not like what he had to say at all at the Saddleback forum.

the book banning was declared a Hoax.
Not entirely. No books were actually banned, but get out the way, here comes steamroller Sarah, aerial-hunting anyone who doesn't agree with her!
http://www.snopes.com/politics/palin/bannedbooks.asp
Taylor Griffin, a spokesman for the McCain campaign, said that Palin asked the head librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, on three occasions how she would react to attempts at banning books. He said the questions, in the fall of 1996, were hypothetical and entirely appropriate. He said a patron had asked the library to remove a title the year before and the mayor wanted to understand how such disputes were handled.
Records on the city’s website, however, do not show any books were challenged in Wasilla in the 10 years before Palin took office.
Palin notified Emmons she would be fired in January 1997 because the mayor didn’t feel she had the librarians “full support”. Emmons was reinstated the next day after public outcry, according to newspapers at the time.
Palin probably didn't think she had the full support because Emmons told her she would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.
There's lots more than what I put in quotes...you should read it. While you can.

Will Obama Take Biden Off The Dem Ticket?

Hmm. Not only would this energize Obama and team but it would blindside the opposition, wouldn't it? Talk about not seeing this coming -- Interesting possibility, especially as close as we are to November 4. If Obama keeps sliding downward, this could be a real possibility, if it's legal -- is it?
I think Obama is playing the politics of reality instead of shock politics. If he dumped Biden now and replaced him with Hillary, he'd have to give me a
very
good reason for being so reckless at this point in the campaign to keep my vote. Honestly. I would be extremely disappointed in him for making such a frivolous decision used as an election tactic.
