UFC can not compare itself to boxing.
Posted: 7/18/2009 8:05:33 AM
I'm not in the mood to read what is now a 13 page thread.

To respond to the original "UFC can not compare itself to Boxing" though, why would it want to?

The rule structure of boxing is to beat your opponent either by stoppage or judges decision by punching technique.
Fighters compete, if they are needed, over 12 three minute rounds.

The rules structure of MMA is to beat your opponent either by stoppage or judges decision by punching technique, kicking technique or submission.
Fighters compete, if they are needed, (depending on the match is for title or not) either 3 or 5 five minute rounds.

There are other differences but that'll do for now.
In any case isn't this all a bit Groundhog Day?
Roll on a few months until someone starts the thread again, might not be on this forum though...

So far have been to :

France, Spain, Sweden, Holland, Brazil, Thailand, North Africa, America (Las Vegas, San Francisco, Miami Beach / Florida Key West)...may be more but that's all I can think of offhand...

Has anyone been to the St.Peterburg / Russia end of the world as was thinking of going there next??

UFC 100 Let the speculation begin

My picks are :

Lesnar - Mir did well to beat Big Nog but I can't help but wonder if time is finally catching up with Big Nog. Like people have already stated though it might be interesting to see how Lesnar reacts to being hit...

Henderson - I think Bisping is a better fighter as a middleweight than he was at light heavyweight but. for all the people who reference Henderson's age, don't forget Henderson dominated Anderson Silva in round one of their fight....can you see Bisping doing the same?

GSP - Alves actually impressed me in his fight against Matt Hughes, in much the same way GSP impressed me against Jon Fitch, Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg, BJ Penn, Matt Hughes etc. Alves might very well have superior striking but I think GSP has learnt his Matt Serra lesson well enough for this point to be mute.

Well it depends which Josh Barnett shows up.

The Josh Barnett that couldn't put Gilbert Yvel away from mount position over the course of several minutes or the Josh Barnett that beat Big Nog.

For the record though, I don't think Barnett will beat Fedor either but will be interesting if Fedor finds himself in a match which still looks competitive in the later rounds....when was the last time this happened?

Apparently Fedor is due to fight Josh Barnett next.
To me this fight makes a lot more sense than Fedor vs Brock / Mir / Kongo etc...

Blood Rain
Posted: 7/4/2009 1:23:21 AM
Hello.
I haven't been on the forum for a while, thought I'd mark my return with this.
I wrote it specifically for a writing competition.
Opinons?

I hated the rain.
I hadn’t always felt this way.
I vividly remember the day that I did.
It was August 23rd 2008 when everything changed.

If I hadn’t been so angry I might have been incredulous that the man was surprised. I had been sat at a table near the bar with one eye on the door while I waited for my friend Stella to arrive. That evening the two of us had planned to meet here for a couple of drinks before moving on to a nightclub just down the road. Consequently I had gone out that morning and bought myself a new red silk dress I had seen earlier that week when using the shopping centre as a shortcut to work.

He’d walked over and asked if I wanted to dance. If Stella hadn’t once again kept me waiting I would probably have declined his offer with a smile and the false promise to catch him later. As it was I had grown bored of sitting by myself. In any case I didn’t see the harm, as the pub was less than a mile from my flat, while I wasn’t exactly one of the regulars, I was confident that if anything untoward happened someone who knew me would step in to help.

As was the usual theme Friday night a corner of the pub was set aside for live bands and Bad Wolf, as they had chosen to name themselves, were performing a cover version of the Aerosmith song Crazy which as it happened was one of my personal favourites.
“My name’s Barry, what’s yours?” he leaned in and asked.
“Emma,” I said.
He leaned back and smiled at me, I just began to return his smile when I felt his hand slide what to me was an inch too far down the back of my dress.
“Don’t do that” I said.

He didn’t stop smiling as his hand continued sliding down my dress, and I felt his hand just begin to lift it up and touch my leg underneath. Taking a half step back I clenched my fist and lashed out, connecting sharply with the soft part of his nose and looking on with no small measure of satisfaction as the blood began to flow.
“Do I look like some cheap tart to you?” I said.

Without bothering to wait for a reply I paused just long enough to grab my handbag and leave the pub, fully intending to make my way to the nightclub and arrange for Stella to meet me there instead. I hadn’t realised it had begun to rain outside and it didn’t take more than a few seconds before my dress began to press into me like a second skin.
“Don’t be stupid Emma, come back inside,” a voice I recognised as belonging to Martin, one of the bar staff, shouted after me.

Realising he was probably right I began to turn round even as I heard the sound of running footsteps from behind me. A moment later the handbag I had been carrying across my right shoulder was torn free by an unseen hand, the owner of whom entered into sight as he carried on running down the street away from me.

On a different day I probably would have contented myself by turning the air blue in the direction of his departing back before going home and cancelling all my credit cards but I was still angry over what had just transpired back in the pub. Kicking off my high heeled shoes so I could run properly it was, I would come to suppose, likely that adrenaline played a part in me ignoring the sensation of my bare feet crashing against the wet pavement and through puddles as I tried to eat into the initial head start he had.

Roughly seventy yards down the street he looked back at me over his shoulder before cutting left into the local park. It couldn’t have been any more than five seconds later before I followed him in. He must have fallen over on the wet grass because he was seemingly waiting for me with a line of mud plastered on his trousers as we faced each other at a point just out of sight of the street. I had been so intent on trying to catch up with him and retrieve my handbag that the thought had never occurred to me he might be carrying a weapon such as the knife which he now held in his right hand.

He was breathing hard from the running he’d just been doing, and even through the rain I could see his face was flushed with anger. In a curious turn around I felt my feet rooted to the spot as he walked in my direction, the rain almost seeming to dance from the blade of the knife as he lifted it toward my face.

In the days which were to follow my family and a large number of my friends were to visit this park and lay floral tributes at the place where I was to be found.

I hated the rain.
I hadn’t always felt this way.
I vividly remember the day that I did.
It was August 23rd 2008 when everything changed.
That was the day I died.

UFC 93: Jackson vs. Jardine
Posted: 1/22/2009 12:49:08 PM
I have to say, I don't quite understand the matchmaking for this fight. It's not that I underrate Jardine (he does after all hold wins over Liddell and Griffin) but not sure it's a natural progression after Jackson's win over Wanderlei.

I would have thought Rampage vs Griffin would have made more sense.

Well like it's been pointed out in the past MMA is a funny old game, for instance hardly anyone gave Mir a chance against Big Nog.

I agree Silva will probably dismantle Bisping at this stage, this doesn't make him unique however. This is more about Silva being such a good fighter than Bisping being a bad one.

I've heard he's being lined up to face the winner of Henderson and Franklin since the point has been raised. As coach of the UK end of UK vs USA TUF the winner will coach the USA side. So basically when TUF ends it'll be Bisping vs Henderson or Franklin.

I was wondering what opinions were on them :

Michael Bisping - Won all but one of his UFC matches, went then distance with Rashad Evans (who is now UFC LHW Champ).

Dan Hardy - Successful in his UFC debut vs Gono.

Paul Daley - Did quite well in the (now defunct) EliteX, I've heard rumours he's going to be competing in Japan - not sure how true it is.

Rosi Sexton - Only one loss so far (vs Gina Carano), recently went the distance with Debi Purcell and won by split-decision. Not sure what future holds with collapse of EliteX.

UFC Rampage vs Silva 3

Okami is probably set to challenge Silva for the belt because there's currently no-one who can challenge Silva IMO

I think Silva had an off day against Cote, if and when there's a rematch he'll probably lay the matter to rest. I suppose there's also Bisping but he's not ready quite yet.

As to Machida, I am prepared money that neither Dana White or Joe Silva let him anywhere near a title shot in 2009 for the reasons I've already listed.

Dwayne

What you seem to be missing is the factor of fighter marketability.
A case in point, re-read this thread with a pen a piece and paper and tick every time someone thinks that Machida's style is boring (regardless of whether he wins or not) and I guarantee you a percentage of at least 80%.

Now take that percentage and apply it to people who will read UFC ?? Main Event - Machida vs ?? for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title and I can practically visualise these people muttering "I'm not paying money to watch that".

That is why Machida won't get a title shot, I'm not saying this is right or fair but that's the way it is.

I don't hate Machida, it just seems to me that he plays safe when there's no need.
A case in point being his fight with Ortiz, he clearly had Tito in mega trouble at one point but backed off when there was no need to do so. Either Rampage or Wanderlei would have finished the fight right then under the same circumstances.

Well okay it wasn't the most interesting match in the world but Shamrock took on Gracie at his own game and held him to a draw (if I remember correctly). Sakuraba vs Royce wasn't terribly exciting either but it marked the first time a Gracie was beaten using their own rules (15 minute rounds etc).

MMA/Combat sports need to be banned.
Posted: 12/24/2008 10:30:45 AM
I can't help but wonder if the founder of this thread is from the same group that said much the same thing about Boxing for years on end. Consider the goal for a moment - two fighters get in the ring and can in some instances spend as long as 12 three minute rounds taking blows to the face and head....does that sound like fun to you?

No? Well then shouldn't it be banned for the own safety of the fighters involved?

It was stated that all fights end up with one of the fighters lying on the ground in pain - wrong!! There's plenty of youtube MMA matches out there, take a look for yourself.

MMA does in fact encompass recognised Olympic Sports such as Judo and Boxing within its training. In addition fighters also train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Wrestling - all of which are recognised sports in their own right.

One other thing - if you're teaching students a form of kickboxing which involves kicking pads only then I have a question, when has a pad ever kicked back? There is a difference between teaching fitness and teaching proper self defence.

With regard to Rampage changing camps, yes he did - mainly because he felt that his former coach was ripping him off. He now trains at the Wolfslair over by Liverpool.

To get back on track, and apologies if this has been covered before, what do people think about (for want of a better phrase) the rising stars of the UK - namely Michael Bisping, Dan Hardy and Paul Daley...there are others but that'll do for now.

Bruce Lee hero or just pioneer of martial arts movies?
Posted: 9/8/2008 1:08:03 AM

The whole thing reeks of foul play......
No problem whatosever to stab him down in a back alley and then dump him at Bettys flat , 4-5 guys with knives & he'd be helpless......of course Chow made sure that Bruce was dead by the time ambulance came along.

True but where's your evidence?

It's also very possible that poison was involved , poison that was not detected at autopsy.
Could the triads have struck when he was vulnerable in bed with seizures.....not unlikely scenario to happen , they could hold him down & then poison him.

Would this be before or after the 4-5 guys stabbed him in the back alley?
I just read the Wikipedia entry on his death and three different doctors all agree there was nothing particularly suspicious about his death.

Will Affliction give UFC a run for their money?
Posted: 9/6/2008 2:04:37 AM
I don't why any promotion should be trying to give the UFC a "run for their money", at least not to begin with.
Like it's already stated on this thread - it took Dana White seven years to build the UFC up to the point it's at now. A case in point being Bodog, they came in and put on a whole load of matches (male and female) in a number of countries / continents and then packed it all in when they made a loss in the first financial year.

Also lol @ Dana White accusing others of having attitude problems, I can practically see the Pot calling the Kettle black...

Bruce Lee hero or just pioneer of martial arts movies?
Posted: 9/5/2008 12:14:36 PM
To make a comment on the point on Bruce Lee and his relevance to Mixed Martial Arts I think it would be at the stage it is it now if there hadn't been any Bruce Lee. The reason I say this is for a good number of years the Gracies dominated by taking down and submitting people who had no idea about the ground game. Eventually this came to a halt when people like Ken Shamrock and Sakuraba came along.

I'm not going to say he contributed nothing, if he hadn't died at the age of only 32 (from an allergic reaction to some type of headache tablet I think) I think JKD would have expanded into something truly outstanding...
