ppfffttt.... If ya both were not so friggin' far away. Be happy for a picnic. Must be some strange PoF rule....
Great place for a picnic just a few miles up the road from me. Tables out, shade trees and great overlook of the Ches. Bay.

Well, if you are interested in that line then:
"Digital Sampling" - Looking at profiles online
"MeatSpace Interaction" - Date in real life
"Digital Remastering" - Photoshopping your pictures before posting
"Code Merge" - What sometimes happens at the end of a MeatSpace Interaction
"RTFM" - what women would be telling men *IF* there was a manual !!
"Smorgasim" - What you can get at the end of a really steamy SMS/text chat.
"CUI - Camming" Under the Influence. Similar to Drunk Dialing.

Well - you seem relatively well preserved. Of course, that may require further detailed investigation. Want to call that a date ?

Why Are Over 45 Men In Love With Motorcycles?
Posted:

Don't ride any longer, don't even own a bike.
But then - have a CJ-8 (go look it up) that I can have doors and top off in less than 5 mins. May not be *quite* as open as a motorcycle, but then - I do get to drive it in nasty winter time conditions or on trails, hills, rocks, mud, medians, curbs, more rocks, sand, gravel, pavement, small cars (opps !), grass, whatever.

1)Be yourself. Always
2)Plan the picnic out - make sure there is stuff there you like, and pick a really great spot.
3)Go. Your worst case - you figure out she is into the whole wealth and yacht scene. But then, you had a good picnic out.
Who knows - you might even have some fun without meaning to.

Kidding - just couldn't help myself.
Seriously - OP - Don't get too wound out. Some here are really laid-back, easy to talk with. Some, well...not so easy to talk with.
And get attitudes really fast with the whole 'online dating' thing. Just remember - it is *SOME* of them. Most I have found to be rather pleasant.

Setuid;
First - turn off the *nix processing - Keep scores and figuring averages - just a good way to depress yourself in the dating scene.
However - another path you could investigate - there are several very nice looking (and from the profiles, seem charming enough) women here who responded to your question such as English, Abbi, Helen. Why not ask them out ? They might even remember the forum, and if you send a "sleep well' note - they would get you were interested and might ask you on the second date?
Just a thought.

It's a Coffee!
Posted:
4/26/2009 2:43:27 PM
Have to go along with Mr Provocative (and a few others here)
If invited the woman - then I am paying. And fully expect to. After all - I did ask.
Now - something like coffee (or caramels, if you watched the movie) Starbucks is something like $5 a cup, right ? So, aside from the jokes that I don't go to Starbucks much - I would tend to view spending $5 to see if I can even *talk* to this woman for more than a few minutes to be well worth the investment. If the conversation is not worth the price of a cup of coffee - then I certainly will not ask her out further. Worst case here - I got a cup of coffee myself, and know that I avoided a dreadful evening.
Now - if the woman were to invite me out ? Well - let you know when that happens. Don't hold your breath there..........
Seriously, If I really enjoyed the evening, and wanted to go out again, I would pick up the tab and be happy.
Perhaps cruel of me, but if it is a seriously bad evening, a complete and total train wreck, I would at the VERY VERY least put down enough money to cover my tab and tip, and go home. That way, I at least walk away from the date without 'owing' anyone.

Dear - seriously - be it a house, a trip, or whatever your particular dream is - the only time it becomes "too late" is when they throw dirt in your face. Until then - keep pushing.
'ell - building a house - I would think most of the 'fun' is designing one that fits you !
Oh - make sure - large covered porch. I will bring the drinks over sometime.

Look - I know it sucks - but going to happen. Perhaps I should not be so glib about it. She has some agenda to all this, and guess what? She is in 100% control of this relationship, and not likely to share.
This only ends one way........

So who DOES like a nerd?

Since you are 6' I am assuming that this is hypothetical but ability to fix any broken technological products is a plus.
darn - busted!
No, just part of a running joke, see who gets it. However - answering above, yes, part of it is my job. But - working out of my home office I see:
2 workstations - one for personal, one for work - both linux o/s
3 laptops - one for personal - two for work. Linux for major work, small WinXP for presentations only.
4 servers - File/Print, and three VM machines I use for client and project work
1 - IP/SAN machine I built from scratch - supports the VMs. 6 TBs. space
2 Cisco routers
1 Cisco switch
Full home theater setup that I run the sound from the personal workstation through, as well as DVD and the LCD screen.
I did draw the line at putting a fridge, keg-tap and coffee machine in here. Figured I needed to get up on occasions, and I would likely start blowing circuits again.

Men wanting women only and not other men
Posted:

1) Not sure where you therapist is getting his/her info - but sorry - this particular male views sex with another male as sex AND gay. Combined.
2)I haven't once thought of WANTING to have sex with another male. Period. And not going to. Ever.
3)While I have known a number of gay men there has been a line established. I don't agree w/ your lifestyle, but...it is YOUR lifestyle. Not mine. I will respect your right to determine your own path, but if you grab my a$$, your life ends.
4)As I said in another thread - I personally think women are a whole lot more interesting to look at than men. 'ell - some of them are pretty talented chameleons - Change the hair color, style, dress all that - can go out with several different women, never have to worry about an affair. Wife, Mistress and g.f. all in one..... Men - no way can we do that....
5) Read #1 and #2 again.

OMG ... I feel your pain, OP. I can't tell you how many guys have told me they'd date me if I had long hair -- and 90% of them had NO hair themselves. I've also had a couple tell me if I drank alcohol, they'd date me. Obviously, they're really not that interested and are just trying to get off the hook for a 2nd date.
I would date you - if you could at least make that roadkill a little more tender. "ell - the truck already did part of it for you, can't you finish ? I mean - how tough can a possum really be ?

That awful F word.
Posted:
4/22/2009 1:40:09 PM
My two cents in here.....
"Failed" isn't a bad word. Face it, some things do fail, including relationships. And that is not bad in and of itself. It is what you do with it afterwards that determines bad or good. Failed marriage, didn't work out, but you take away from it why it didn't work, and you start making *reasonable* plans on how to correct that situation next time (Notice - reasonable, "next time" as in you are not a man/woman hater now, etc) You learned a bit about yourself AND the sort of person you need to be with, and will try to sort those qualities out in both yourself and your partner next time.
Bad - Failed marriage. You now thing all men/women are scum. You think they all lie/cheat/abuse/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc. And that you were powerless then, and are powerless to prevent it in the future, no idea what was wrong, so you are going to hate men/women now, and you will make the next sorry b*stard/b*tch pay for what was done to you.
Now - in reading that - which sounds more positive? Guess which is more healthy ?
And to muddle things a bit more - If you are dating someone and it becomes clear to you that under option 1 above, that this person just is not who you see yourself growing old with (but in all other respects is decent) then why do you have to consider that failed? It did fail - and the other person didn't fail. You were just not the ones right for each other at that time. Tomorrow is another day, and hopefully you will learn a bit more. Not unheard of that they become the right one.
So - "fail" is neither good nor bad - just is. The difference is how we deal with the inevitable occurrence and what we really believe are failures.

Ubuntu; modification of Gnome and finding drivers for graphics card
Posted:
4/2/2009 5:36:44 PM
Newer versions of Ubuntu detect it pretty well. Other than that - get 'envyng' and it will get the right ATI/NVIDIA drivers for you.
Gnome - look under System - Preferences and find "Main Menu" Edit to your hearts content. You can also 'drag and drop' application icons with that editor.
Enjoy.

You on the other hand, dumbsh*t - had to add in your asinine political rhetoric in a forum not suited for it.
So please - go drink some bleach. Gene pool needs a little cleansing.
or try this one:
Please go bury your head in the sand - the average IQ in your neighborhood will double for a short time.
If you are going to be insulting and bash people - at least try to be original. Which - in your over-aged state, is probably damn near impossible. Mainly because you have two functioning brain cells left, and they are currently in orbit around a stupid idea and your need to change your Depends.

SIW will certainly give you much more than the average user cares to know, there is a little simpler tool available.
http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
Will also give you Office Keys.
If you find you have an OEM key - just call the 800 manual activation number. Royal pain in the rear, but better than going to Vista at this point.

Planned on retiring when I am 45, so won't have a job.
Love fixing up old vehicles to use (not just show or put on trailer) so they are going to think I am dirt poor driving a old old old truck.
Live in a modest house - circa 1860 - so not sure what they will think there - probably think I am a squatter there.
Oh well -

is being the black sheep of the family a born to be theory
Posted:
3/26/2009 5:20:29 AM
Nicely said, ARP......
Yes - am the 'black sheep' on of a rather large flock. Funny - because all my family considers me the 'steady' one who is the rock at all times. Something goes bad - I handle it. Someone gets into a bind - I handle it. One of the sibs gets a bit of the blues, I get a phone call.
Everyone in the family pretty much knows I will take the right road, even if the 'easy' road would be just fine by everyone else.
However, like Arp - I do my own thing. I work, yes, but life is a period of time, and this world is my playground, I intend to have have fun and experience whatever I can. Leads me to some very odd places and such - way beyond what some of my sibs, who have never moved out of the area, have done or seen.
So yes - I am the 'black sheep', so named by the sibs - and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Honestly? It would surprise me some at most any date stage!
Date three? I would genuinely appreciate it. Not for the part of 'paying the bill' though. For the act, she was willing to do such. It isn't about the $ - I would take it as she is enjoying herself as well, and starting to participate as a partner.

Read your posts - and the smart-a$$ in me just kept thinking "Welcome to MY world !"
Seriously - it sucks for everyone. I am not one of those really 'approachable' guys. Even when sitting down, relaxed and just doing the whole people-watching thing, I have been told more than once that it seems I am rather intimidating. Which I believe is total bunk, but then again - have never been asked to dance, go out, whatever by a woman.
But welcome to equality. Many a great thing about being male. A few not so great things to.

Then again what's the difference?
1) With the hooker - she tells you up front you will get screwed. And you are okay with that.
2)A hooker saying "I am here to help you" isn't quite so scary
3)You can change hookers as often as you like. You are not stuck with a bad one for 4 years.
4)One is going to attempt to screw you out of all your money. The other is a set price negotiated up front.
5)I have yet to read a hooker asking for a 'bail-out' plan
6)One is going to jump into bed with just about anyone. Nawww..nevermind...no difference there, sorry.
7)A hooker will do you only for what you pay for.
8)A Politician will do you no matter how much you pay.

OS X is much more stable, far more secure and all around a much prettier and more thought out designed OS
Send your thanks to the folks at BSD. You know - the Unix people.

What is that line out of "Good Will Hunting" ?
Skylar: Maybe we could go out for coffee sometime?
Will: Great, or maybe we could go somewhere and just eat a bunch of caramels.
Skylar: What?
Will: When you think about it, it's just as arbitrary as drinking coffee.
So, Fancy - wanna go eat some caramels ?

What professions are a turn off?

My profession (Navy Pilot) has a bad rap as well.
Dunno - anyone who crashes planes on a postage stamp for a living - must be a bit touched in the head.
(Kidding with you - rock on. CV-60, CVN 67, 69 and 71. 10 years Navy, 10 Army)
I don't think I would exclude anyone that has an 'honest' job of any sorts - even if I didn't exactly agree with the profession as a whole. And by honest job - there are not specific criminal or civil statues that make your line of work illegal.

FYI, there is no word yet when Vista will be discontinued
I can give you the reality answer in that one - "Not soon enough"
Okay - snarky comments aside. I have test run Win7 on my new, very fast work laptop, ASUS eeePC 900, and a mid range 4 year old "media center" laptop. On all three - same results. Not *quite* as fast as WinXP in tests to open documents, move file sets, and other repeatable, measurable everyday tasks, and a couple graphics intense games. But - in each case - faster than Vista on same hardware.
I did have some problems with drivers on the media center Laptop (wireless and sound) but the other two ran as expected. Note, this is still a beta product - so there was certainly room left for tweaking. I would in no way recommend this for home or work use at this point - however - it does look much more promising than Vista did and does.
FWIW - my 'normal' day to day business and home use - I use RedHat and Ubuntu Linux. So no - not a WinFanBoy, and no - will not do a Linux/Win7 comparison. For my use - that would be apples to oranges.
There is a current problem with the Authentication modules in Win7 - and hoping they don't do the 'head in the sand' approach with it, and actually fix it.

Anyone else going to school for IT networking?

Fazey pretty much hit it on the mark. The certs are a pain in the rear at times - BUT - if you want to get to the 60k/yr jobs quickly - just understand they are $ you spend to earn even more $. Thank the HR industry for basically making them mandatory for getting into the best paying jobs at any level. Do your penance at help desk for a bit to get your experience up - then get to Lan/Network admin position, keep looking for a way into System Engineer/Network Engineer position.
You may have to move to get the really good job slots, and you *certainly* will have to learn truckloads of new products, technologies, and methods. Constantly. As in - if you are not reading tech rags 10 hours a week - might be a bit behind the curve.
If you are interested in Security - then certainly get yourself the MSCE, Security + certs and a few years experience. When you can - go through the CISSP course. You can do it now, and be an "Associate", and write in for CISSP once you have the time requirements met. I couldn't honestly tell you the 'employ-ability' value in that, however. Basically - I have looked in the DC Metro, Dallas Metro and Chicago Metro area for average salary for CISSP with decent years of real experience - and pulling 90 to 100k is a reasonable goal. Some are making more, yes - but figures there are *reasonable* expectations.

Exchanging phone numbers???

I have no problem with this because when I'm comfortable to meet him, in this particular instance, I'm, comfortable giving him my phone number, he having given me his, and any other information I may wish. In this case, his name, number and my routing, timing, etc. has been given to two friends who are instructed to call me if I have not reported to them by a pre-arranged time.
See - now here is a good example of how to reasonably ensure your safety without playing unwarranted high school level games.
I would presume of course - this is at a public area at least for a first meeting.

Ender;
Eh - don't sweat the negativity to much on here - you were not being the 'bad guy'
Now - buying clothes for women ? Oh come on - you should know better !!
You are a guy. You are genetically predisposed to screw THAT up! The testosterone levels make you see colors and sizes all wrong.
But - in case you do get the urge - remember - they sell condoms in variety packs now - including colors of the rainbow.......
