How do we know what is changeable?
Posted: 2/19/2009 3:52:16 AM
There is another old saying in regards to this:
'A Man marries a Woman hoping she will not change, but she inevitably always does.
A Woman marries Man hoping he will change, but inevitably he never does.'

Geeks or Chavs?
Posted: 2/16/2009 4:27:08 PM
It comes down to definition really of what is a geek:
Secluded, intelligent, spends a lot of time with computers and what not: Well I do that, yes it's true and yes, I've been called a geek many times in the past. However...
I also socialise a hell of a lot, regularly step into fights (often with people many times the size of me) and come out on top (it's not a boast or what not, it's part of my role to keep order at my premises and play the 'parent' to people too ****ed to realise they are acting like children) and I am struggling currently with working out why it is that I am out in Nightclubs at least four nights a week, keeping things together for the 'scene' and generally getting on with most people.
In other words, I'm not really a geek, though there is things that I do that can be considered geeky. I am my own person, with my own life thank you.
Still, none the less, I've dated people both with 'geeky' qualities and 'chavvy' qualities. Both are interresting in their own right, with different points of views and ways of looking at things. Generally for me, Chavs are a real turn off but there are a few gems amongst them. Likewise, most geeks I've met are general much nicer people to get on with, but once again, there are a few that are the exception to the norm.
Final result for me: Geeks normally over Chav's, but never be blinded to the label.

Friday 13th - Myth or.........
Posted: 2/13/2009 12:29:40 PM
In some older cultures, 13 was seen as a lucky number rather than unlucky. Trisdecaphobia, the fear of the number 13, only has come about in the last few centuries. And besides, why would anyone see a Friday as being unlucky? It's technically the last day of the working week for many, which means you've got the whole weekend off from work (I know, in this modern world, most of us probably are still working into the weekend, but for schools, offices etc... it's time of work) and some good nights to party!

Throwing snowballs.................
Posted: 2/3/2009 3:33:30 PM
One of the things that gave me hope about the next generation today came from a story from one of my locals. He was telling that he popped to the shop on the way to work this morning (which he later moaned about because it was dead in town and they closed the indoor market early, even if that meant he got to be in the pub earlier) and as he came out, a couple of kids asked, yes, that is right, they actually asked him if they could throw snow balls at him. Being a good sport, he said, sure, one each then. Little did he know they had a dozen more mates around the corner and the literrally pelted him with the snow balls. But he took it all in good humour, especially as they were polite enough to ask to begin with.
With all these stories in the winters cold of 'disrespectful youths' etc... that one story alone was enough to warm my day.

Have you tried to get to work today?.......or stayed indoors
Posted: 2/2/2009 7:10:13 AM
It seems that snow has fallen everywhere here except the city centre. Then again, that's pretty normal here, the city centre is the last place it settles as there is a lot of salt in the air.
Not that it would make much difference to me mind, I've got no excuse not to work considering I live above my place of work.

How do i find the right career path?
Posted: 2/1/2009 6:49:10 PM
I know they are not always the nicest of places to walk into, but have you tried going into your local job centre and asking? If I remember right (it's been a good number of years since I've been in one) they have whole sections dedicated to careers advice, not just for those signing on, but for those looking to change career direction and how to approach it. Even if they can't help you, they should be able to point you in the right direction.
But in all honesty, the above poster is correct. Even if you hate your job, it is better to stick with it until you can get a new one. This was a good ethos at any time, as being unemployed when applying for new jobs can be a mark against you, but right now, that is more so because of the current climate. Right now, any job is a job, just work from there towards where you want to.
Oh, and to avoid depression, don't ever ever watch the Monty Python sketch about the accountant who wanted to change career path.

does the christian cross offend?
Posted: 1/31/2009 5:18:03 AM
Once upon a time, the Christian religion did indeed refer to Muslims, Jews, Hindu's and even atheists as all being Pagans (and some extreme places still do). It may well be another one of those things that the church blindly "borrowed" a term for however with a much older meaning. That crops up quite a lot in church history.
And just to clarify, I did state Wiccan was a non-theist religion, i.e. worships multiple gods (I probably wasn't too clear when I went on to clarify what the word theist means, I should have explained what non-theist meant - teaches me for writing on the forums after being out all night clubbing doesn't it). :D

Its scarey
Posted: 1/30/2009 9:01:12 PM
Once upon a time it was for me, and a daunting prospect it was too. But after a while, I discovered it better just to go "**** it" and go for it. After all, if you hold back, you'll never know what might have been, but if you don't and get knocked back for it, well, that is the way it is but there are plenty more good people out there.

Should pubs here in the UK be allowed to sell Marijuana ?
Posted: 1/30/2009 8:58:31 PM
No, absolutely not.
I run a pub, one which (touch wood) is surviving the recession and the increases by the brewerys quite well thank you. Whilst I understand that people that smoke Canabis tend to be (though not always) more placid than those who drink alcohol, the culture in Britian is just not right for it to take effect that for bars to sell it. To do so would require an extensive addition to the all ready complicated 2003 licencing act that could possibly place undue pressure upon licencee's who are all ready struggling to maintain businesses in a trade that is probably required to obey more laws than any other.
Don't get me wrong, I disagree with the recent change by the government to move it back from Class C to Class B, but to fully legalise it for public use I think is wrong.

I would say regularly, but that'd be a lie. I've just updated my pics today after it being the same old tired ones for the last three to four years. Oooops, should keep a closer eye in future I think.

Okay, just a little fact for those not aware (and yes, I'm a Christian who runs a pub in which there is moots for pagans that take place on a regular basis):
Pagan = Non-Christian. It's as simple as that. Like a Gentile is a non-jew, a Pagan is a Non-Christian. That is the actual meaning of the word.
Wican = followers of a non-theist (the word theist means believers in a singular god) relgion, mostly encompassing witch craft as it is labelled today, but is a little more extensive than that (most "true" wicans understand a concept of "the all" from which it is broken down further into multiple aspects for the "easier" understanding of the human species).

What do YOU do on a Sunday.
Posted: 1/30/2009 5:10:21 AM
Sundays is my time with my kids, which means either cooking them dinner or taking them out for a dinner and then finding something to do with them. Thankfully, there is plenty of activities to do around the city and living in the city centre means none of it is far from where I am. I would do church, but unfortunately the kids wouldn't sit through an entire service and my local church for some reason only do Sunday school for infact school ages and lower :S (and no, I'm not trying to impression my religion on my kids, they are the ones who keep asking about going to Sunday School, if they didn't want to go, I wouldn't be looking for ways to take them).
After the kids go home, it is then a quick catch up on the latest happenings in the bar, a good pint (always needed after dealing with my kids) and then once the pub is closed it is time to get drunk as I need to dispose of all the alcohol that is wasted whilst I clean the lines :D

the mullet!
Posted: 1/30/2009 4:44:10 AM
There is no way I'd change my hair into a mullet. It took me long enough to grow it back to a length that I wanted without spoiling it. That said, I do know some people who have them and have no trouble with the ladies. It's like most things, it depends on whether it suits you or not.

Do you believe in Ghosts?...Derby hospital calls in exorcist...
Posted: 1/30/2009 4:36:39 AM
Are the hospital right to bring in a local priest and to take this so seriously?
Yes. The arguement as to whether ghosts exist or not is moot for this. If several staff are feeling uncomfortable about this, it will hamper their work performance and detract from their experience of their job. Whilst not enough maybe to force them to quit, if other issues enter their work life, it may be just enough to make them think they've had enough.
Furthermore, whether you believe a trained exocist from the cathedral (yes, both the Roman Catholics and Church of England employ a number of trained exocists on their books in Britian) will have any effect on it is also quite a moot point. Firstly, it will help bring so sense from the employee's that their management is taking the issue seriousily to what they believe and trying to resolve what is the issue. Secondly, if there is a ghost and it is being malicious, then there is no harm in releasing the left over emotional residue that is left in the area and freeing it up from it's influence.
Do you believe in Ghosts and have you seen one before?
Yes. Working in old pubs, you tend to get used to it in fact. Whilst you must not think every creepy happening in the world can be attributed to ghosts (a chill in the air is probably just a draft, a creaking floorboard at night is just the wood setting back into position etc...) there are some things that go beyond normal conventions. I tend to 'feel' when ever these spirits are around and I've heard hundreds of accounts of ghost experiences in my premises. I don't mind them, most are harmless, except the one which keeps smashing glasses in my pub. I personally witnessed along with a member of staff and a customer the first time in happened a year ago as two wine glasses just shot of the shelf and hit the floor. The second time happened a couple of days ago in front of a full pub where there is no logical explanations for how the glasses moved. Even better is that I even caught the event on CCTV.
Who could this black-clad figure wearing a cloak stalking wards and corridors be?
It could be anyone of the number of people who have died there. A ghost, from my understanding, is just left over emotional residue imprinted on an area (or sometimes a person) after someone dies (hence why old pubs get so haunted, think of all the people who spent more of their life in their local than any other place in their life, including their own homes or work places). When hospitals get haunted as well, it is likely their death there brought with it a strong emotion of not wanting to go. Thus a bit of them remains to lurk around the corridors. My belief anyway.

I see the thread is up for deletion due to Attention/Self Pity. After looking and failing to find the attention and self pity in the thread anywhere, I have thus come to conclusion that the Delete Police are once again smoking illegal substances.
Wonder if they will squirm over that?

Do you get confused when Thread titles are changed?
Posted: 10/30/2006 1:18:19 PM
I mean one minute there is one thread. People reply.
Then there is two threads. Same title, same topic. People reply on both.
Then there is one thread again. But there is a new one in the place of the old one with the replies of the first thread on it...
Confused?
God bless the forums and double posting.

Do you worry about what your kids will inherit from you?
Posted: 10/30/2006 12:46:19 PM
It is often said by those who know me and have met my children that my eldest is a spitting clone of me, both in looks and personality. Even my ex turns around and complains that there is absolutely nothing of her in him. Sometimes this makes me chuffed, but at the same time it worries me as if he will inherit any of the things I am not so happy about my life just simply by being my son. I really hope he doesn't go through the same sorts of hardships I had and the same learning curves, though these can be positive in the end in their own right, which would all come about by simply the force of his personality.
Does anyone else worry about anything their children may have inherited from them?

I always was a placid guy until the last few years and then suddenly I found this sadistic pleasure in making others squirm by saying or asking the awkward thing. I find you can really find the measure of a character or at least find out how open or relaxed they are with you by doing this. Does anyone else find any strange sort of joy out of making others squirm?

The new 'traditions' of Halloween
Posted: 10/30/2006 12:25:19 PM
I thought the modern Halloween had just become another excuse for people to get dressed up and go out and get pissed. Come on, this is the British society we are talking about and now it is any excuse to get a drink down our necks.
I did get asked a good question by one of my staff about 6 years ago. Back then, I had full length hair and always wore black outside of work (no, I wasn't a goth). They asked me what I did for Halloween as I pretty much looked like someone out of Halloween all the time. I responded that I wore a track suit and acted like a Townie (the predecessor to the Chav) as that sure as hell scared the shit out of me.

Compromise vs Sticking to your guns
Posted: 10/30/2006 12:17:32 PM
As we go through life, we begin as normally one of two people. Either we are people who are always considerate of others and compromising, regardless of the consquences it means to ourselves. Others become more of the opinion of sticking to their guns, so to speak, no matter what and will always seek their own way forward. Eventually, as we get older, regardless of which path we began, we begin to adapt and adopt the other path in measure as well, until we find a balance that is suited between the two.
The question is, when did you think you found that perfect balance between the two points? Or do you think you still have to find it and if so, which path do you currently more lean towards?
Personally, I've been on the path of compromise for most of my life, and it is only in the last year or so that I've found my own voice truely and begun to learn to adapt both together.

Sentences

What is justice? Seriousily, a lot of people need to ask this question before looking into it. Justice is that it never happens in the first place. If this condition can not be fulfilled, then justice is that what ever steps are necessary (this can be taken in many directions depending on personal point of view) to ensure it doesn't happen again. Justice however is NOT revenege, which some many people seem intent on using the system for.

I was rather relieved the clocks went back. Waking up Sunday morning (well afternoon) after a good night out I thought it was 4pm. Turned out it was 2:30pm to which I was relieved as I thought I had missed most of the day. Then I found out the clocks had gone back and that it was in fact 1:30pm, which meant I got to see more of the day then I would have. The Clocks going back has done me a big favour this year.

I once had hair down to my a***. Shaved it off one night (completely bald), not for charity saddly, but because sometimes I like to do things on impulse. I completely scared my staff in work which was good. I kept my hair short then for about 4 years and realised I missed my long hair and so I've been growing it back this year.

When I've been drinking there is one food that I constantly crave for... Cheese and Chips. Unfortunately, when I moved back to Southampton, there wasn't many places that did it, but it seems like the craze has started becoming more and more noticable and there are a couple of places here that have started doing it.

stings and bites
Posted: 10/28/2006 11:27:35 AM
Yes Pink, any animals with fur, including Humans can carry fleas. However, they normally only stay on the animal for a short time before moving off and nesting into carpets, furnishings, bedding etc...
However, it is unlikely that the Hamster does have fleas, though it is not completely impossible. Hamsters generally present a smaller target to them then things like Cats, Dogs, Rabbits and off course, Humans.
I hate flea bites, I am slightly allergic to them and have sweet blood, so if I enter any place where an animal has them, I tend to get bitten like mad. I stayed recently a couple of weeks at a friends house who has cats which, as I found out to my dismay, has fleas. None of them are ever bitten by the buggers, but I have come home covered in their bites. I am just thankful to be back home, cleansed and in a clean enviroment, giving an oppertunity for all the bites to heal back up again without getting fresh ones.

On note of Star Wars III, which yes, the effects were absolutely spectacular and I loved them, but part of the reason why the special effects of Mustafar look so good was that it was only part special effects. While the structures were either sets put against blue screen where the actors actualy acted out, or CGI models for the rest, the lava floors and rocky terrain was actually mostly real footage taken from near to a volcano vent, all superbly blended together to make it seem as real as possible.
Off course, there is very few space battles that compare though to the opening scenes of Revenge of the Sith. If you ever have it on DvD, pause it during the battle and take a close look. There is thousands of CGI models in each shot, showing the exiquisite detail LucasFilm and Industrial Light and Magic pulled together for those opening scenes. Even afterwards, with the more peaceful scenes on Coruscant, the amount of effects in each shot is phenominal.

Thanks guys for the responses. It seems by the general consensus it may be worth doing but not until after Christmas, probably best around January, Febuary time it seems. So I will hold off probably until then and then start going full steam ahead. However, will still need to organise a venue, so if anyone has any ideas, throw them my way please.

The ex
Posted: 10/26/2006 5:47:06 AM
To say I've never said bad things about my ex would be a lie. It's really within human nature to try and make everything better by trying to make the other party seem as bad as you can make them, it's part of the mourning process. It doesn't necessarily make it right. Yes there were things she has done that has annoyed me and some may question morally, but at the end of the day, we also had a considerable serious relationship and had three children together.
Recently, with the court lifting the concession of us not talking to one another, we have begun to talk again. Despite our bad history, there was also some good times as well and we do have three children. In addition, we have known each other for so long and in ways others haven't, it kind of gives us a unique perspective on one another. With this, we have become friends again, and get on better then when we were together. Three years ago I may have lost my fiancee, but recently I have gained a new friend.

Thanks Vin, I have read that section, I am more looking for help in organising and ideas for the venue if any one has one of the top of their head if the interrest is there.

Southampton Meet up
Posted: 10/21/2006 3:56:07 AM
I am giving due consideration to getting involved in organising a meet up in Southampton sometime before Christmas. The city is ideally located between Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Brighton on the South Coast, plus with direct ferry services to the Isle of Wight as well. Even Londoners are not that far away, the journey taking just over an hour on the train, so it appears to me to be a good place to be holding a South Coast meet.
The question is, would people be interrested in this and has anyone got any ideas for a venue in the Southampton region? When I return home next week, I am going to get searching of the locals pubs for function room availability, but any recommendations are welcome. Also, this is the first time I've considered organising a meet of this nature, so any tips, advice or help is welcome if we do get this off the ground.

t shirt slogans

I'm not one for being egotistical normally, but I have always wanted a T-Shirt that on the front said:
'Yes, the World does revolve around you...'
and on the back:
'...but the Universe revolves around me.'

Baby killed by stolen jeep
Posted: 10/21/2006 3:35:24 AM
I don't think there is any punishment that could comfort the parents and relative of the child that was killed nor the owner of the Jeep who would know that not only was his car stolen and wrecked, but that it was also responsible for the death of the baby.
They will certainly be trialled in charges of Joyriding (for stealling the car and driving around without a licence), Vandalism (for destruction of the car) and Manslaughter (for the death of the child). Personally, I am not sure if it is enough.

Poundland

Walking around Swansea today, I noticed something... even the Pound shops are being hit by inflation these days. I forgotten the name of the firm, but there is a new shop opening in the city which is essentially a £2 shop!

why do people not reply to instant messages
Posted: 10/20/2006 1:18:56 AM
It is also worth bearing in mind that many people, concerned about Internet Security and / or just fed up with Advertisement Pop-Up's, use Pop-Up blockers with their internet browsers (Yahoo Tool Bar and Google Tool Bar both have a Pop-Up Blocker built in, as do some non-IE Internet Browsers). The IM Messenger just doesn't work with Pop-Up Blockers.
Also, some people won't chat on IM Messenger until they have spoken to you first in messages, it is kind of like going onto MSN straight from the word go with no formal introduction.
Others will only speak to someone on IM Messenger if they like the look of their profile, in much the same way as people only respond to mail from people they like the look of in their profile. Yes, you might consider these people shallow, but at the end of the day, different people are looking for different things, just keep trying.

Fireworks and pets
Posted: 10/20/2006 1:12:02 AM
Serenum is the name of a product that can bought from the shop floor of most good pet shops, and I know for a fact that one particularly large Pet Super Store Chain does stock the product. It is not a particularly potent or powerful medication (hence it can be sold on the shop floor without perscription) but does help to calm the animals down during Fire works season.
At this time of year, most Pet Shops and Stores will be building up additional stocks of Serenum, it is practically the only time of the year the product actually tends to sell, but that said, it does become VERY popular at this time of year and the closer you get to Fireworks night, the more likely it is that a Pet Shop will go out of stock of the product, so the sooner you can get your hands on a box, the better.
It's been a few years since I worked in the Pet Trade, so I can't remember the exact price, but I believe a box of Serenum sells at about around a fiver.

Why Do We Celebrate Christmas On Dec 25th?
Posted: 10/20/2006 1:05:52 AM
From what I remember, one of the names given to the Pagan festivels is the Festivel of Light, which liturally is the celebration and encouragement of the light increasing the land after the winter solstice (which is only about a week or two before hand). And yes, the reasons given above is why the early Roman Catholic church adopted the 25th December as being Christmas.
Historians however who have studied the birth of Jesus Christ (the debate as to whether Jesus Christ was the Son of God or what is a seperate matter, but there is plenty of Historical Evidence (other than the bible) that there was indeed a man called Jesus Christ who was born around that time) actually place the birth of Christ as being closer to Easter time, this being born of documented Evidence (the Roman Census for example, the very reason why Mary and Jospeh had to travel to Bethlehem) and also intriguingly, studies into Astrology and Astronomer to determine what the star of Bethlehem was (the most popular theory states that it could have been Saturn and Jupitar being in Conjunction, which would have given the guidance to Bethlehem for those following the pair, plus the Astrological significance of a conjunction of those two planets that might have spurred 3 Magi from the west (i.e. the Wisemen) to make the journey to Bethlehem).
In addition to the day of birth being close towards Easter, it is also though that the birth of Christ was several years earlier then 1 AD, making our calenders slightly inaccurate. We should technically on that front be somewhere between the year 2010 and 2014 instead of the year 2006.

Colour blindness
Posted: 10/20/2006 12:55:07 AM
I am apparantly slightly colour blind in the shade of green only. I.e. this means I see green slightly different to way everyone else and in something like a Turquoise colour, I am more likely to see it as a blue then a green or blue/green like everyone else.

Not Washing Your Hands After Going To The Toilet.
Posted: 10/20/2006 12:52:23 AM
I always wash my hands, normally using scrubbing techniques taught to me for my short time spent as a Care Assistant (it's more thorough, getting into the cracks that a normal hand washing would miss... i.e. digging the tips of your fingers into the underside of the otherhands fingers and using the fingers of each hand to slide between the joints of the other fingers... and area a aweful lot of people miss), but it often amazes me when I am out the amount of people who do not wash their hands or do the 3 second splash which is a kind of, 'I am not really bothered by this, but I will do it for show.'

interview tips
Posted: 10/20/2006 12:44:33 AM
I agree with many of the tips above and have been in both the position of the interviewer and the interviewee many a time. What I also found helpful is to remember that an interview isn't just about finding out if they feel your suitable for the job, but also that the job is suitable for you. I always put on a mental state of mind that goes along the lines of 'I know I can do this job, but they have to convince me that this is the job I want.' I always take a note book with me and jot down things that they say, especially about the job (always ask if they mind you taking notes) and before hand, prepare in the notebook a series of questions that you can ask them when they ask you if you have any questions. Research your questions before hand, making them appropriate to the job you are going for (which will show that you have an interrest enough in the business).
Perhaps it is me (and this is not recommended if you don't think you have the gall to pull it off) and with my experience being an interviewer as well for people applying for jobs, but I love turning the tables on an interviewer and asking some really awkward questions such as, 'what kind of job satisfaction do you think the staff here get out of their job?' and 'what is the current staff turn over?'. Last time I went for an interview, the interviewer at the end was sweating and commented that she felt that I was interviewer her rather than the other way around. And yes, I did get the job.
