We've seen the don'ts - How about top 5 date do's for men

Am I the only one who sees the irony of people on a singles site giving advice on successful dating?
But I will contribute, though my suggestions apply mostly to a first date:
- Set the expectation before the date that you if things don't work out you can always be
friends. You will both know within 15 mins if you click or not. Don't be afraid to call it.
- Instead of "dinner and a movie" do a number of mini dates over the course of the night. It
also creates opportunity to escape should you require it.
- Don't smile too much. It makes you come across as easy to read.
- Make her laugh.
- If you think there is chemistry, go for the kiss. If she feels the same, she will kiss back.

I just sold my car on craigslist this afternoon, so I would have to say I have found the service fantastic.
I will be moving to Burnaby shortly and plan on purchasing any new home furnishings I require from there as well.
I think it is unfair to blame craigslist for peoples misuse of the service.

Thriving on rejection.
Posted:
8/8/2009 8:26:06 AM
This really can be summed up as "playing hard to get".
A few posters have commented how ludicrous they think the concept is and that they don't play that game. They give and take everything at face value.
Good for them.
But the reality is that "playing hard to get", means there is a game, the key word is play.
Total game players... and more people play it than don't. I also think that more people play it than think they do, they simply are not aware of their actions as it is done subconsciously.
The problem with playing this game, like any other, is that you win some and lose some.
Many people will take the rejection and move on, even if you were simply trying to spark a more interest and have them pursue you.
Other people identify exactly what you are doing, and they don't want to be part of that game, and move on with no regrets.
You also get the people that refuse to accept rejection, and constantly pursue you to the point of harassment because they think you are playing the rabbit, and think they are the wolf.
Personally I am not into the playing hard to get game and when I feel it is being played simply move on.
I do think that a little bit of mystery and intrigue can fuel interest in a potential partner though.

Hot enough for ya?

I recall watching a program on Discovery Channel about how they keep cool in desert climates, specifically it was in Dubai, where AC is not the norm for most people.
They have extremely high ceilings and hang damp blankets or sheets from beams. Even if there is very little breeze, it helps to carry the heat away through evaporation, and when the winds blows can lower the temperature of a home by up to 10 degrees.
To test this theory out, I opened up both my front and back doors as it creates the greatest airflow, then hung a damp sheet over the door where the breeze came in and started to notice a big difference, 5 degrees on the thermometer.
Doing the same with a bedroom window I am sure would work well, and you could probably use a fan on the other side of a sheet to create your own breeze.
Keeping your feet and head cool have a dramatic affect on your body temperature, so keeping them cool can make a big difference as well. Many have already mentioned putting a damp cloth on your forehead, but putting your feet in a small kiddy pool, in a slightly filled tub for a few minutes, or even a baking pan or casserole dish? will help you cool off.
Even though things are starting to cool down, hopefully this will help some beat the heat.

Comparing organic food vs. conventional food
Posted:
7/31/2009 10:32:28 AM
The great thing about the world of corporate science is that a report can end up saying whatever you want it to say.
So often we hear advocates of organic foods claiming that studies are biased towards towards those that fund them. But this claim only seems to be made when the results show that the gap between organic and conventional food is not as wide as they might have us believe. I guess all of the studies funded by organic produce supports are all done on the straight and narrow without bias...
We so often hear that organic is healthier for us.
Kind of a blanket statement, don't you think? And really easy for people to make assumptions as to what it means.
Someone made a reference in another thread about the statement "every cigarette takes 7 minutes off of your life". A statement that originally referred to how long it takes to smoke a cigarette, but it commonly assumed to reduce your life span.
So what exactly is healthier?
There have been so many studies done, all with differing results, but the general conclusion at the end of the day is that there is little, if any nutritional difference in conventional vs. organic foods.
I guess we can say that conventional is as healthy as organic then.
Until we look at the levels of pesticides that are used. This has no correlation to nutrition but definitely is a factor in how it contributes to our overall health.
You will find as many different opinions as there are choices out there, and you can quote any study you want to back up a view point, another person can find 10 to dispute it, and can find 10 again for each of theirs.
The reality is that pesticides have been in use, in one way or another, for about 4500 years now. No joke.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pesticide
Granted it was derived from more natural ingredients, and today they are primarily synthetic, but the fact is that we have been ingesting more than we think for a long time now.

The above poster hit the nail on the head.
If you sit down and read the instructions that come with these devices they have very clear guidelines for "recommended use". Quite often they seem ridiculous, and inconvenient for normal use, but they are designed to protect users, and more importantly limit liability of the manufacturer.
As for the tablet PC issue, they will run quite hot as they are powerful computers in a compact package, but they also have specific use guidelines in regards to cooling. Ever noticed that you don't see many laptop computers these days, but a lot of notebooks?
All in the wording. I used to work for HP in tech support, it was an expensive marketing error in regards to lawsuits.

keeping dogs cool during this heat wave
Posted:
7/30/2009 10:19:39 PM
As most posters have said, if your dog is thirsty, they will drink.
Dogs are not nearly as susceptible to temperature extremes as humans are, and we tend to over care for them in situations like these.
Consider in addition to the heat, that your dogs activity level has probably gone down, thus the need for less water, and in many cases dogs will have a decreased appetite.
The only situations where your animal is going to be at risk is places like a car, where when the temperature outside the car is 30 degrees, it can reach as high as 70 degrees inside in under 30 minutes.
In your home dogs keep cool by lying on the floor (hot air rises), bathtubs (as has been mentioned), and in places where they can feel a draft.
I have A/C in part of my house, but my dog will go lay out on the front patio where the thermostat today read 42degrees, I am past trying to figure it out.

Well personally, I just sleep until I wake up, but I can see how that might not work for most people.
I usually just use my cell phone if I have to wake up for anything.
It is also my calendar, watch, and calculator.
Even a phone that isn't on a contract can still be used for an awesome alarm clock, it automatically switches with daylight savings, and if you just leave it plugged in all the time, even if the power goes out it will still work for like a week.
I have only ever had digital alarm clocks, and am in the camp that dislikes the ticking when I am trying to sleep.

This morning when the temperature was still a cool 25 degrees or so, I installed my air conditioner into my bedroom.
When I lived in an apartment I bought it because it had enough juice to cool the entire place.
I will be moving the computer, TV, and Xbox in there and hunkering down for a few days.
The blower for the AC in my car died on Tuesday morning, just in time for me to drive from Chilliwack to Burnaby, and then back to the island last night.
While I find this kind of weather uncomfortable, I just really limit the times I do certain activities and drink lots of water to keep cool.

HST!
Posted:

This plan is revenue neutral for the government.
Meaning that in the end they are going to claim the same amount of taxes.
The whole reason for this program being implemented is a tax shift from business to the consumer with the ultimate goal to help businesses be more competitive in the global market.
With the shift of taxes to consumers, it means that we will still pay GST on everything we have always paid it on, and we will now pay PST on everything, as oppose to things like kids clothes, food, etc which are currently exempt.
Those on low incomes will be hit particularly hard by this, and even though there will be an HST rebate, like the GST rebate, it means less money month to month in a families pocket.

Occasional smoker
Posted:

I have to agree with those that think an "occasional smoker" is one who does it in specific circumstances.
I have never been a "regular smoker", but being a second hand smoker since conception, I used to feel the urge to have a cigarette when I reached a certain state of inebriation when out drinking.
The taste of ashtray in my mouth the next morning reminded me why I didn't make a habit of it. I have since broken even that habit.
I do enjoy a cigar every once in a while. I have non-smoker on my profile but don't feel I am false advertising.
If you smoke at least one cigarette a day, a person is considered a regular smoker in my books.

The company that owns and run the music festival is also has two properties in foreclosure that were being developed as a race track, as well as a golf course....to the tune of about
$4 million.
I know many people that have gone and enjoyed themselves in the past, but rising ticket costs, restrictions, rising camp lot fees, etc have made it so that it is not an affordable trip for people anymore.
Some big company will come around and buy in to the project to keep it going, the opportunity to make money is there, as well as phenomenal advertising opportunities.

Comparing organic food vs. conventional food
Posted:
7/13/2009 12:33:37 AM
I am not a big fan of fruits and vegetables in general, but have been eating far more as part of a new healthy eating plan.
Having sampled quite a variety from big box grocery stores, as well as from local farmers markets, I would have to say you will notice far more of a flavour improvement in fruits vs vegetables.
I find that organic meats is a bit of a toss up. Chickens and eggs are far better organic than conventional, this is because the meat tends to be leaner as most organic chickens are free range. (store ready chickens can be grown in 6 weeks btw)
Beef on the other hand I find better when it has been injected with who knows what kind of steroids and hormones, for the opposite reason of chicken, which is that it tends to be fattier and juicier.
I am sure most would agree that both taste and texture is far better in wild fish than farmed fish.
And I don't eat pork, so I can't comment on that.
As has been mentioned, you certainly don't get the bang for your buck when buying organic, but the health related benefits are something to consider.
Organic fruits and veggies contain higher levels of anti-oxidents than conventional fruits and veggies, but do not contain higher levels of nutrition value. The higher cost is related to growing and harvesting methods, as well as unusable portions of crops due to defects, disease, etc...
Organic is pesticide and chemical free as well.
There are a lot of questions though about how organic the organic we really eat actually is though. The rules for what it takes to put organic on your foods labels are slack at best, and many companies exploit the loopholes to their advantage.
An example being that organic food can be grown in chemically fertilized soil. It allows the plants to grow bigger and faster, which in turns produces no crops, but without having chemicals sprayed on the fruits themselves.
Meat is another one that has many people wanting tighter rules and regulations.
You may eat a steak from a cow that has never been subjected to steroids, or growth hormones, but what about the grain and hay that the cow ate?
Obviously no matter what we do contamination down the food chain is inevitable, and organic branded products are definitely the healthier choice, but it makes you wonder what goes into the food we all eat everyday.

A Giant Step Backwards for Women.....
Posted:

I hope she grows up before she finds herself pregnant/barefoot/in the kitchen.
This comment was made in this thread, and the thought struck me...what is wrong with that?
If a woman goes and makes a paycheque while her husband stays at home looking after the kids and home, she is applauded for breaking out of the traditional role.
If she chooses to stay at home, she is looked at as not having taken advantage of everything the feminist movement has done for women.
There is something missing about the equality part of that equation.
In other news, female ski jumpers have had their court case to jump in the 2010 Olympics turned down.
It should be made clear that VANOC had no part in this, and it is purely the choice of the IOC to not hold this event.
It has been claimed that the women are being discriminated against for no reason than their gender, yet we see women competing in all sorts of Olympic events in both the winter and summer games.
The IOC has set criteria for entering new sports into the games for which each gender must comply with individually. In 2006 the IOC voted not to include womens ski jumping in 2010 as the sport was developed enough on the world stage.
Granted in the last 4 years the sport has come a long way, there have been world championships, and the number of women competing has increased, but these decisions are made years in advance of the actual events in order to facilitate planning.
It appears that womens ski jumping will be included in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
So the question is, does this come down to an equal rights or discrimination case?
Or simply not meeting the rules by the previous deadline, and a lot of whining after the fact?

Is Media controlling what we hear about hate crimes?
Posted:
7/10/2009 2:01:38 PM
I too just caught the Noon News on Global.... and it appears that Charges may be filed for assault.... not sure if that is the reason the names have not been announced...because the man attacked has not filed charges.
The police can press charges against an individual, even if the victim declines to do so themselves, providing there is enough evidence to support the charge and get a conviction in court.
In regards to the reports of hate crimes, I am sure there are all kinds of crimes that happen each day that we think we should be informed about, but there is no drama in the media without visual reference.
In this case there was video taken of the actual incident happening, and it draws attention and ratings. Do you think it would cause nearly the uproar in the public eye if there was only an interview with the victim explaining what happened? Unfortunately, no one would have cared or thought twice about it.

Well to settle the debate on physical capability, I thought I would go straight to the source of world class athletes from around the world, the Olympic Record Books.
I picked only a few that I think more or less incorporate general physical capability.
Mens 100 metres 9.69 seconds
Womens 100 metres 10.62 seconds
Mens Marathon 2: 06 :32 minutes
Womens Marathon 2: 23 :14 minutes
Mens High jump 2.39 m
Womens High jump 2.06 m
Mens Hammer throw 84.80 m
Womens Hammer throw 76.34 m
Mens Total Lift 165.0 kg (363 lbs)
Womens Total Lift 128 kg (281.6 lbs)
* for the weight lifting, the 69kg (152lbs) weight class was the only weight class in both the mens and womens competitions and I selected the Snatch lift, though the mens lifts were higher regardless.
In regards to physical capability, men can run faster, longer, jump higher, throw farther, and lift more. These are the best trained athletes in the world, and the near the pinnacle of human physical achievement.
I agree with others in the thread that the womens movement has been extremely important in granting equal rights and choice.
But at the same time affirmative action programs have been put in place that offer the same opportunity while lowering the minimum requirements, and this is supposed to be fair and equal?
Situations like that cause the womens movement to lose credibility and validity, and such situations are the ones that tend to receive the most media attention, so is it any wonder people have formed the views they have of feminists?

My Generation and yours,..and yours too.
Posted:

I have been on and off this forum for quite some time now, longer than most of you have been alive ;), and some things never change.
A few recent posts have inadvertently been discussed with obvious stereotyping between the different generations of people that populate this board.
There are lots of situations in which a "Kids these days...", and "Welcome to the 21st Century grandpa" type comments get exchanged, if not in so few words.
So the question is, is it really possible to compare today to 50 years ago? 25 years ago? even 10 years ago?
We are all living in a time in which massive strides forward in technology and innovation have entirely reshaped the way our social networks are formed, how we interact with others, and the availability and how we obtain information.
No matter when you grew up, I am sure that every kid has heard "I wish I had it as easy as you do, when I was a kid". Some people look at the world today and think that things are bad as they can get, that society in general is immoral, irresponsible, and depraved...but people thought the same thing 40 years ago.
Are things truly getting worse each and everyday? And with the massive population boom that has evolved over the past 100 years should we not expect more problems with more people?
I am certainly guilty of dismissing a point of view that is not inline with mine.
Of passing judgment on a persons wisdom and experience based on their age.
And not respecting that people form opinions based on their view of the world, however askew I may think it is.
So I suppose the questions to ask are if you feel that it truly is fair, or even possible to compare now and then?

I think I am in love.
This was a great video that came up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAg2jBUMc-8&feature=related
But lets take the women being equal to men argument first.
I believe the girl in the video was referring more to physical prowess, than equal rights, since she didn't mention anything about intelligence, voting, pay, etc...
If there are standards set in place for the physical requirements of a job, why SHOULD they be lowered because a woman wants to play with the boys?
Her argument about things like firefighting and a paramedics are perfect examples. There is a bare minimum level of physical fitness and ability that is required for these jobs, and why should affirmative action lead to lower standards for women, when they are claiming they want to be treated as equals?
In regards to the polygamy argument, our current social structure in regards to monogamous relationships, the acceptability of homosexuality, etc... is based on laws that were created during the marriage of church and state. Why should one persons moral beliefs be allowed to infringe on another?
All of that being said, I do believe that there is still discrimination in many forms against women, minorities, etc...
But one can also argue that things Affirmative Action reverse discriminate by requiring that people be hired based on sexual preference, gender, race, etc...instead of the person that is the most qualified to do the job.
In all fairness, Feminazis are the ones that really give the women seeking equality a bad name.

Actually the reason they died out was because property values and building rents have increased so much that it was not, and still is not profitable for a roller rink to exist now.
The key is that there is not enough profit, because there is not enough interest. Ice rinks have managed to survive, and if there was the demand for roller rinks you can bet that local community centres would be melting ice to make it an option.
Things like roller skates, pogo sticks, and moon shoes were extremely popular fads while they lasted.

I blade the seawalk here daily with my dog, and I find it to be great exercise and more low impact than running. Lots of people do it as great outdoor recreation as there are tons of well paved paths all over the place to explore.

Phuqd ~ what if they could email you with a private photo attached? Would that change your mind?
As you get older, you realize looks fade, stupid is forever. If you can find smart and funny, you're more than halfway there. If it comes in a cute package, even better.
That is what the picture only feature does. If they have a private photo, they can choose which ones they wish to attach.
I am still young, stupid works for me.

How do you bring about positive change within yourself?
Posted:

We are taught that there is a schedule, routine, process, and instructions for everything we do, so naturally people try to stick with what they find comfortable and "day to day".
Some changes are obviously bigger than others, some require money and some don't, and some we cannot possibly hope to achieve on our own without the knowledge and assistance of others.
Some examples of small, but easy changes that most people say they would like to make involve things like personal fitness, helping the environment, learning new things...
So why is it that people don't buy CFLs when they need to replace their light bulbs in their home?
They park as close to the front of the store as possible to avoid walking across the parking lot, or take the elevator when they could just as easily take the stairs?
How about big changes like getting a new career? traveling? moving to a new place?
The reality is that the majority of people don't know how to properly set goals, because we are never taught the proper process to achieve them. Then when we try, we fail, which leads us to not wanting to try, because we think we will fail.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I don't assume the worst, I just don't bother.
The majority of people are assumed to be on here for the same reason, which is to find other compatible people to meet, date, and hopefully form a relationship with.
This means putting yourself out there for others to see, scrutinize, and judge before they you have exchanged a single word.
Of course there are some that would like to protect their privacy, and good luck to them in their search. I simply don't accept messages from those without a picture to share.
I've shown you mine, so show me yours ;)

Compliments
Posted:
7/5/2009 7:15:40 PM
Women get a ton more mail on these sites than the majority of men do. It is a simple fact.
Regardless of if they are getting 1-2 or 100-200 a day, it is still more than the average guy.
This is because women do not have to message guys in order to get attention, converse, set up dates etc... and is bred by the old concepts that a man should court a woman.
So if you find a guy interesting and attractive enough to email him, you can bet that there are other girls that had the same thoughts as you. This allows the guy to pick and choose amongst his inbox, as well as the women you can bet he is messaging in his own search that he finds attractive. He might even find them interesting.
What this all means is that once you compliment him, he already knows he has you if he wants you, and the challenge of pursuit is what ultimately keeps things interesting.
Doesn't anyone remember in school when girls threw rocks at the boys they liked, and the boys put frogs in the girls desk that they liked?
Complimenting is not flirting, which is what piques interest, but is actually interpreted by most people as a form of admiration and therefore submissiveness.
Of course one can say anything and read into anything that they would like to.
I speak from the experience of recognizing these things and changing my habits to have more success in the pond.
This is a game whether some would like to admit it or not, so suit up and play a strategy that works for you, which is probably outside of your comfort zone.

http://www.tol.bc.ca/files/web_files/planning/EDO/2006_Census_Profile_-_GVRD.pdf
I found a like to the 2006 Census.
It really kind of clears up any questions of population at least.
This is all for the GVRD:
Total population 2,116,580
1,032,440 Males, median age 38.3 %49
1,084,140 Females, median age 39.9 %51
Single, never married 34%
Separated 3%
Divorced 7%
Widowed 5%
Total population 15 years and over 1 ,770,835
Not in a common-law relationship 1 ,655,180
In a common-law relationship 1 15,655
There is not a lot of specific data on singles, but this paints a pretty clear picture.

Free Rides

Way to much to read through, but I think that if you are going to carpool with someone, you should totally pitch in for gas as it is totally a common courtesy.
But without reading everything posted, I could be charged and probably found guilty of taking that free ride when the opportunity comes along. And why not?
We all pay into a public system that is supposed to payout to us when we need it.
A little bit of paid training here, some time off between jobs for a paid vacation there...
The majority of people pay far more into the system than they will ever get back, so dipping your fingers into the social development coffers is no different than the creative taxes we all file each year.
The true problem is the perpetual freeloaders and moochers that never pay in, and milk the system for all it is worth as often as possible. They are the ones that ruin it and make it difficult for the people when they need it.
The same can be said of any system in place that is designed to protect people such as ICBC, WCB, etc...
Socialism is here to stay.

I try to use really big and confusing words that are accompanied by little and confusing words. The perplexing fraction is that I have no approximation how to advantage them befittingly, but they just resonate so majestically unanimously.

Life Long Dream

With the way technology and travel is advancing, my dream might one day become a reality.
I have always wanted to walk on the moon. Human colonization of other planets is surely not going to happen in my lifetime, but being able to take that first step that will inevitably lead to leaps and bounds for mankind in exploring the universe is a pretty thrilling thought.

Powerful woman.....

Here I was thinking thinking we had a topic going about female super powers.
I mean like Catwoman, Storm or Rogue from the X-men. Maybe they should be X-people? Another thread I suppose.
But really, we all know that She-Ra is the princess of power.
She Ra is known as the Princess of Power. As such, she has superhuman strength and is highly resistant to damage. She also possesses superhuman speed and agility, a healing touch, as well as the ability to speak with animals telepathically. All her powers derive from the mystical Power of Grayskull. She also weilds a Sword of Protection

Capacity for Self-Love
Posted:
6/6/2009 4:26:30 PM
I haven't found that my capacity for self love has ever been a problem because I can always switch hands.
I don't know that self love is really the appropriate term for this topic though. I think self appreciation, self-esteem, and self respect are probably more applicable to how we treat ourselves and others treat us.
How many people out there can't take a compliment? and how frustrating is it to try to give one to those people when they are never willing to just accept the praise as it is, without some sort of self-depreciation?
And there is of course the opposite that involves people who think they are awesome sauce, when everyone else just thinks they are an arrogant prick.
