Oprah show ending - Arrogant to the end.
Posted: 11/21/2009 6:40:31 PM
Observing this thread I notice;

a. guys dont like Oprah
b. girls dont mind Oprah

Guys...ok, time to get you schooled. Unless you want to be on a dating site for the rest of your natural born lives, going home alone at closing after unsuccessfully flirting with the waitress who really doesnt like you but flirts for tips...

Learn to like Oprah

It a chick thing. Respect it. And for heaven's sake please dont rant about Oprah on your POF dates or she will go home feeling she has just had a date with a woman hater.

Personally, I think a black American woman who started with nothing and is now worth 3 billion has something we can learn from. She has been a terrific role model for young black gals and all women who want to earn success. She has always focussed on the spiritual and on self development, which is almost unheard of in the world of David Lettermen and Jay Leno. She played ball with the big dogs, beat them all at their game, and showed us that if you try hard enough, you can succeed.

Yeh, she's a brand, just like Jay Leno, but pound for pound, you will learn more about the world and yourself watching Oprah than watching the Tonite Show...

IMHO..which of course, is seldom humble...

Since when is personal choice in grooming metro?
Posted: 11/18/2009 4:06:26 PM
Metro is a stupid word invented by advertisers to market skin care and grooming products to men. Men have always shaved, yanked out nose hairs, tanned, used cologne and spent thousands on suits, ties, cufflinks, belts, and great looking car, furniture and high end art and electronics. Any man who neglects his hygiene or appearance is either an alcoholic or living on the streets. Lets dump that stupid word, METRO, and replace it with, gentleman.

Shave if you want, let it all hang out if you want. Let the nay -sayers be damned!

Is a guy that cooks *so* rare?
Posted: 11/18/2009 4:01:20 PM
I cook every night. Last night it was filet of trout, sauteed red peppers and tomatoes in olive oil, fresh sage and tamari. A huge salad every nite. As any celebrity chef show will show ya, men make the best cooks! Ask Gordon Ramsay, Michael Smith, David Adaji, Massimo or any head chef. Well that isnt strictly true, there are some amazing gal cooks too. Just not too many in the celeb chef status...i wonder why?

LOL..you actually have the time to go back to archived posts and quote? You must have more free time than me, I can hardly follow one at a time.

Theres no contradiction. Educated people are more interesting. It doesnt have to be formal, I said educated, not degreed.

Your overall tone, Traveller, is one of cynicism toward academia. Why are you so cynical? Why cant we accept someone without looking at their education? You seem to imply that snobs are educated, I know alot of snobs who arent. Snob is as snob does.

Graduate degrees
Posted: 11/16/2009 5:22:47 PM
I can't agree that all education makes one more self reflective

I wasnt saying that, let me clarify. I dont mean self reflective as in self knowing, thats what psychotherapy is for.. I am saying that educated people are more likely to challenge their own ideas, and be able to discriminate between good and bad information. People without formal education tend to form an idea and stick with it, without challenging it. They use alot of inductive logic, forward reasoning. They havent been trained to think. There is the odd person who, without the benefit of university, acquires good critical thinking skills. But for the most part, its university where you should obtain those. Deductive reasoning is learned and takes a few years to master.

Additionally, educated people are far more interesting to talk to. They can handle culture, politics, science, history, art and other topics. Most of the less educated folks I know, who I still dearly love for other reasons, dont have the same range and depth of conversation available to them.

I guess what I am saying is that learning on one's own is ponderous and one sided. There is no comparison. Just look at the global warming threads on POF, the vaccination threads, and some of the health forum threads. You can quickly see who is worth listening to as a result of education and those who are struggling with logic.

Graduate degrees
Posted: 11/16/2009 3:01:28 PM
To me a graduate education is post bachelors. Its not some specialty in carpentry or nursing. Its a masters or a doctorate. Other references to it are misleading.

And on education, in general, the more you have the better a person you can be. It doesnt have to be formal, BUT, formally educated folks are GENERALLY capable of self criticism and analysis to a better extent than those without. Also, people with graduate degrees still occupy the top 5 per cent of earners.

Theres no dignity in stupidity and ignorance. There is infinite possiblity for someone who always wants to learn.

Fort Hood shooting - What are the questions? What are the answers?
Posted: 11/9/2009 4:17:23 PM
it will hasten the US's eventual departure from Afghanistan

Great....so that the nutjob Taliban can continue to throw acid in schoolgirls faces, hang gay men and throw them off towers, tell women not to go to school, and make kite flying and listening to music illegal....

Great, just great.

"If the entire faith promoted violence, and all its adherents were violent or prone to violence, we would literally be constantly hearing of bus bombings, pizza parlor bombings, random shoot em-up's like this, attacks on shopping malls, movie theatres, and so forth."

We do! Just read the papers. Every day, somewhere in the world, yet another atrocity is committed in the name of Islam. Not in the name of Buddhism, Jainism, Sikihism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism or Taoism. Just Islam. Good old, peaceful Islam.

Retire from looking for love on POF and now on the Forum

Welcome to the club! I, for one, got tired very fast of sending emails with no reply, chatting inanely with women who are far too busy to meet anyone and getting my hopes up only to have them dashed with every message I sent. I became a forum junkie and these forums do not dissapoint. Unlike modern gals, who seem biologically and socially designed to dissapoint. Girls make terrific friends, but god help the man who wants to love one! Gals, I love ya, but in a platonic way. You are just tooo high maintenance for me!

Fort Hood shooting - What are the questions? What are the answers?

Timothy McVeigh and abortion clinic bombers ...

I always laugh when i hear these examples. You have to reach waaay back many years to find ONE incident Christian believers propogated to match the thousands that angry Muslims commit each year! There is no comparison. Christianity, in its modern form, is extremely peaceful. Islam, in its modern form, is an abhorrent, war mongering faith. The fact that so few prominent Muslim leaders express outrate at these incidents is proof of this fact.

There is dissension and self criticism in Islam but not enough yet. There is no contemporary Christian equivalent of 911, Manilla, Mumbai, daily salvos of rockets aimed at Israelis, the Syrian occupation of Lebanon which only recently ended, the insane politics of Iran, the Pakisani honor killings, the Pakistani Al Qaeda radicalism, the shoe bomber, the Toronto 18, the attempts on the life of Danish publishers who criticize Islam, the bombings in the UK airport, the scalding of girls faces in Afghanistan, the assassination of a high school principal in the Philipines today... the list goes on. Face it, modern Islam has an overwhelming number of nutjobs, blowing any resemblance to Christianity out of the water. The Canadian Muslim Congress is working hard to reduce radicalism, and even they state now that the Hijab is a medieval custom that has no origins or justification in the Koran.

"simply that he snapped "

When I snap I dont kill people. I just curse. You see NO association between his Islamic beleifs and his bloodsport?

"Its justa flu bug no different then any other kind "

Nonsense. It cost me more than a thousand dollars in lost work. It lasts for weeks, up to 6 weeks of downtime. Its killed 100 people in Canada so far in its first wave. Teenagers have died. Its no ordinary bug.

Everyone who refuses to get the vaccine...its selfish. You will get the flu...pass it to up to a hundred people a day, and thank you for that! I wish you could see that when you dont get vaccinated, that you increase the risk to everyone else!!!

Please, stop being so anti scientific. Use reason, not empirical experience and opinion.

Again, every person who refuses vaccination increases the threat to others....

Dot and others

I do suspect some increased immunity, but sub types of the virus continuously evolve, so I predict a mild second infection, but I dont know for sure, there could be new antibody and T cell clones needed to deal with changes in the protein and gene sequences of the different viroids.

So far I have put together a pretty good H1N1 survival kit.

3 Sisu multivitamins 2X a day
Udos own EFAS, X2, 3X a day
Manuka honey, ad lib
Vitamin C, ad lib

For symptom control

combined decongenstant and anti fever medication, the Nyquil day and night combo packs are nice, providing mild sedation at night

This seems to take the sting out of the symptoms. Whether it reduces the duration of infection, idk.

Are all men potential rapists?
Posted: 10/22/2009 9:37:52 AM
The logic used would also argue that;

a. all men are potential killers
b. all men are potential addicts
c. all men are potential geniuses

Its not good logic. It indicated that all men have potential ... well, all living things have potential. Of course all men are potential rapists, as we are potential healers, lovers, heros and villains. Its inductive logic, the "could be" argument.

What the misinformed authors are trying to state and I disagree again, is that all men have a tendency to commit sexual offenses. The use of the word "all" and the declaration of tendency are both logical errors. All is a very strong word and includes every man born since our inception as a species. Tendency would have to be witnessed in a majority of men and since the majority of men don't commit violent offenses, that argument doesnt hold water either.

What is a better tact, is to state that the social status of women in various societies makes them victims of male domination. And that is correct for many parts of the world still. Behold Pakistani honor killings, arranged and forced marriages and forced female circumcision, to name a few atrocities committed in these cultures. What is important is that we all guard against our tendency as a species, to subjugate women and base power on sheer physical force.

Safety of Professional Tanning on skin?
Posted: 10/21/2009 11:22:26 AM
I agree with most of the comments here. The tanned look isnt always the most flattering. As a makeup artist, I can bias a foundation toward the undertones in the skin. Some gals, for example, have both bronze and yellow undertones. By selecting a foundation which has bronze undertones, you can enhance the definition of the face. The only downside to very fair skin is that its susceptible to UV damage and so you need to wear a higher SPF base value than darker gals. You are more likely to develop wrinkles and discolorations due to sun exposure. That having been, said, if you go with a good SPF, theres no reason not to have a wonderful, dewy, glowy complection without the need to tan. Scarlett Johansen, Nicole Kidman, and Zeta Jones are just a few examples of lovely gals who are fair.

Dot, is there evidence that one round of swine flu gives you some enhanced immunity? Logically it should, but is there data on subsequent infections? The CDC site mentions that if you have a flu and then see a return of symptoms, espe respiratory or neurological, as in confusion and syncope, that you should report to a health care provider. I would be reassured to know that once i have had it, it wont come back, but is there evidence to support this? Thank you in advance.

Dcoffman

I dont argue with your points here. Of course we have to select someone we like. I think the OP is focussing on the sense of entitlement that is prevalent in our society. The feeling that we are all somehow very special, regardless of our actions, we are all perfect beings who deserver the best. It doesnt leave much space for compromise. It finds us with alot of people all demanding the very best, without themselves seeing that they arent really the very best. At its best its wishful thinking. At its worst its complete narcissm. I think thats the OPS main point. An entire civilization of people who are all, in their own minds, number one. Doesnt make for a very cosy place.

I think there is a shred of truth the OPs extended argument that women are a tad more narcicisstic then men are these days. Thats the pendulum of time, swinging. Remember, it was only at the beginning of the 1900s that 2 women werent even allowed to go hiking together, or wear anything other than bloomers when doing so. Women werent permitted to wear bloomers in public. She was there to make a good wife, period. It wasnt that long ago. So I fully expect there to be a strong pendulum swing to the gender left, if you will, to the complete emancipation of women and their own testing of the waters. I think it will even out in time. For now men simply have to grin and bear it. And wait for the rest of the mysogynist world to catch up.

which side of the extreme would you rather be on?

What do arranged marriages have to do with this? Non sequeter.

I would like it if;

a. women admitted that they arent all powerful, independent trucks
b. men would stop being so idiotically macho about everything
c. and we all could just join hands and sing Kumbaya....

Now that, I would pay to see.

New Swine Flu vaccine is dangerous business
Posted: 10/20/2009 8:46:28 PM
"I am so sick of all this swine flu crap. "

I had H1N1. Its a nasty illness. I am sick again with another damned bout of it. I am NOT stupid. I am very conscientous. Dude, if you get this flu, you will know what I am talking about. I hope you dont. Its a horrible illness, which cost me hundreds of dollars in income, lead to all kinds of problems, not the least of which was lying on my back for a week and having symptoms that went on for over a month and lingered for a few weeks after that.

I do agree that the only epidemic is stupidity. People too stupid to get the vaccine, who keep spreading it by going into work with the sniffles, who dont believe in science, who make up stupid conspiracy theories to prevent any vaccinations. People who dont care aboiut anyone else, who run around like little vectors spreading their stinking viruses.

Now thats stupid.

I have just been through swine flu. It lasts for about 6 weeks. It knocks you on your butt. I am now sick yet again with another flu.

I wash my hands, carry sanitizer and disinfect all surfaces. I am very careful.

NONE of this helped.

I will be the FIRST in line for the vaccination. Unless you have gone through H1N1, you dont know how incapacitating this illness is. I will gladly risk the vaccine, I simply cant take an entire winter of serial flu.

"Having a Ph.D. has nothing to do with level of intellegence."

Aside from the spelling error from a masters student...(gentle poke)...

I take issue with this. Its very hard for many of my new undergrad students to spell their names, much less complete a doctorate. Only a rare few can go on to complete a masters and even rarer the doctorate.

Its discouraging to work for something so long and so hard and make so many sacrifices, only to have people put you down for it. It denegrates a solid institution and it denegrate our committment to learning, to improving the world. No, a Ph.D. does not mean you are better than anyone else, but it does show intelligence. I dont want to live in a world where ones initiative and abilities are continually undervalued, thats Chairman Mao's China and we all know what a lovely place that became..

Love Ontario!!
Posted: 10/13/2009 8:51:10 PM
I detest Ontario. Will be moving back to BC very soon.

Its cold
People are unfriendly
People are workaholics
The scenery is passable but mostly lame.

But mostly its the cold, long winters. I was out on my bicycle tonite. I had to wear a shirt, wool sweater, fleece top, and goretex ski shell, along with gloves, hat and even at that I had to keep moving to stay warm. And its only mid October!!!!

Ontario has alot going for it. But nothing going for me. I cant wait to get out.

PS: Dating in Vancouver, was easy and fun. I met alot of great folks. Dating in Ontario is simply awful. You cant pencil your way into a workaholics day planner. And who wants to date depressed, very serious, very uptight, very busy women anyhow?

BC rules. Ontario...lame. And yeh I was born and raised here. I couldnt wait to get out. The coldness of people here is astounding. Try starting a convo with someone you dont know in a grocery store here. LOL. Have fun? Now, go to Vancouver and try starting a convo with someone in the grocery store. See the difference? Enuf said.

BUT if you enjoy it...rock on! Its just not for everyone. I know alot of my friends love this place for its;

a. jobs
b. beautiful fall weather
c. jobs
d. beautiful springtime weather
e. jobs
f. multiculturalism

6 of 1, half dozen of the other. I just like the BC lifestyle waaaay more.

I got my doctorate about 15 years ago. It takes alot of work and dedication. Its not easy and it proves you have determination, stamina, passion and intelligence. Very few people in society attain that level of education. I wish more did. It wasnt hard in an academic sense, anyone can do the work. The hard part is sticking with something.

Ph.D.s for the most part dont make alot of money. Lawyers, doctors, even chiropractors will earn more, to say nothing of dentists, entrepeneurs and successful fashion designers.

Date a Ph.D. and see for yourself.

Favorite MMA fighter?
Posted: 10/10/2009 7:24:09 PM
My last PPV event was watching Brock Lesnar lie on top of Frank Mir and hit him til the ref stepped in. It was an insulting, childish match. A HUGE steroid freak who lies on top of people and hits. Great skills, go Brock go.

I will NEVER waste a single dime on MMA events again. I tried to get into it, watched who I could and I really think its a sad sport.

With Befort and Machida now using good old Shotokan karate to blast their opponents away and GSP only fighting like once a year now, and Silva about to retire, for me, MMA is over. Its really a debasement of martial arts and a typical Western sicko interpretation of fighting arts at the moment. Note how NO competitor older than 35 does well. Randy Coutoure just gets beaten every match hes in. Theres no longevity in the sport its for 20 somethings.

I gave MMA a chance and it disappointed. Of course there will always be thousands of angry young men lining up to see bloodsport, but as for the "art" in MMA, its not there. But if you want to continue to pay 50 bucks to watch guys like Lesnar lie on top of other guys and pummel them more power to you. Its just pathetic. For every Cung Le, GSP and Silva, there are a thousand "ground and pound" specialists who are half trained, steroid infused goons. Its a sick sport which was a good idea some 10 years ago and has degenerated into a really depressing waste of time.

IMHO

Her busy Schedule
Posted: 10/10/2009 7:11:32 PM
I have seen this alot. Its then new thing with women....my theory..its a defense against feelings of loneliness. Staying busy to avoid feelings. Its mostly false busy ness. Anyone can establish a balanced life, if you are meeting women who have no control of their lives and are pure victims of time, its tough to get to know them.

Let me inform you of one thing, its regional. Depending on where you live, there are different lifestyles. Toronto is all business. Vancouver was ALOT mellower and easier to hang out. I really dont think many men have the patience to watch a busy girl spin in circles. If women choose to be busy 24 hours a day, then that says it all. They have no room for you in their lives and they are going to spin in circles until they are too old and tired to spin anymore. Then they shuffle off to nursing homes and sit in wheelchairs and get food brought to them and get their adult diapers changed.

Most women, as well as men, havent invested much work in themselves, learning how to plan a life, take control and gain balance. Its a rare person who doesnt get sucked into the myth of the perfect life through good Protestant work!

But thats what they want, thats what they get. All these busy gals are spending their Saturday nights alone or with girlfriends, just like they did when they were 15. Too busy to date, too busy to find love and too busy to really take life in. Its their choice and I leave em to it!

How can men sleep with women they have no interest in?
Posted: 10/1/2009 5:00:00 PM
Because women love players. Women are addicted to being mistreated. Its their comfort zone. It takes a very enlightened woman to cast off her years of subjugation and find a mate who treats her well. Most women like to be mildly abused, cheated on, lied to and manipulated. It supports their low self esteem. It takes a long time for women to emerge from the role of victim that society teaches them to adopt. But until women stop worshipping morons, this is their fate. Most women mellow out when they hit their 50s, until then they dive bomb for anything high risk, and any man who makes them work hard to keep him. Go figure.

How many women fantasize watching their man with another man?
Posted: 10/1/2009 4:54:01 PM
Its so funny watching all these so called MACHO men quickly decry the idea.

The more and the louder these guys protest, the more you KNOW that they are closet cases. A man who is secure in his sexuality doesnt need to jump in a thread, beat his chest and scream

I AM STRAIGHT!

Its so funny because I just know that the MANLY MEN on this thread are going to be coming out in about 10 years time, confessing to their poor wives that they are gay. The men who posted a moderate response are straight and secure.

Methinks they protesteth too much.

Its all so funny. The same guys who are almost violently opposed to male/male sex are GUNG HO for watching 2 women. Its the amazing socialization that their sick, depraved fathers gave them. The same fathers who taught them its okay to screw a hooker, but dont marry one. Its mysogenistic crapola.

What is depressing are the women here who decry the idea. They will get what they deserve, a chest thumping football addicted slouch who has one token gay friend and likes to have a few with the boys and see some strippers.

Michael Bryant and Darcy Sheppard
Posted: 9/25/2009 4:44:24 PM
The night of August 31, Darcy Allan Sheppard was on his bike on Bloor Street, riding home from his fiancee’s apartment. It was 9:45 p.m. As he approached a traffic light, he passed to the left of a Saab convertible that we now know was Michael Bryant’s. After passing Bryant, who was stopped at the light, Sheppard cut in front of his car and also came to a stop. Shortly thereafter, as the light turned green, Bryant drove forward, perhaps bumping Sheppard’s wheel. Sheppard turned his head back, in Bryant’s direction. Witnesses reported that when the light turned green, there was a toot of the horn from Bryant, and a shout to “get moving,” followed—perhaps—by a return shout from Sheppard. Then, incredibly, Bryant hit the gas, pushing Sheppard forward into the intersection, knocking him off his bike. As Sheppard struggled to get to his feet, Bryant backed up, stopped, turned his wheel and began to drive past Sheppard as he sped away.

Sheppard gave chase, grabbing onto Bryant’s car as it sped by. Witnesses reported hearing shouting, and noted that Bryant was “very, very angry.” They also reported that as Bryant sped down the street with Sheppard clinging to his car, he was driving on the wrong side of the street, at about 60 miles per hour, driving up onto the sidewalk, driving against the trees and posts and newspaper boxes lining the street in what they reported appeared to be an attempt to brush Sheppard off his car. Down the street 100 yards, Sheppard was slammed into a mail collection box, and crumpled into a heap in the street as Bryant’s rear wheels ran over him. Witnesses reported that Sheppard, who lay in the street bleeding heavily from his nose and mouth, attempted to get up, but was advised to remain still until an ambulance arrived. Bryant continued driving down the street to the end of the block, before turning in to the driveway of a luxury hotel, where he finally stopped his car.

Its clear that Bryant was the raging homocidal maniac here. It took an American reporter and blogger to set us straight. Sadly, the Canadian press coverage has been juvenile.

I hope this sets the record straight. I dont know about you guys, but if someone nudged me purposefully from behind I would be VERY tempted to take out my New York kryptonite lock and prepare for the worst.

people who did something good for the university (ie got or gave them money).

Not exactly. Wildrose has posted a terrific list. Its more for leaders in the community or others who have made a signficant contribution to their field.

Now, Pamela Wallin being awarded the title of Senator is more likely to make me question things...

Borderline Personality Disorder
Posted: 9/21/2009 6:01:37 PM
BPD is untreatable. He might as well have terminal cancer. Except its worse, because it will destroy you too.

Get out as fast as you can, dont look back.

The only reason to stay with a BPDer is if you are a parent who has a child with the disorder.

I was married to someone with BPD. The horrors.

"What I wonder about is why you have this need for this type of relationship. "

The OP was probably sucker punched. When you are in a relationship with a BPD you both share a private, intense world of ups and downs. 3 AM screaming matches, stomping, acting out, and in some cases, self harm and violence. This brings you both together in a co dependency. Each time there is a blow up, the couple is drawn closer together in the resolution phase, when the BPDers devaluation episode subsides. This codependency is insidious. I call it being sucker punched.

FYI, the clinical explanation of BPD is someone whose emotional restraint machinery in the brain just failed to develop. Its like being born without legs, but its in the brain. Its a lifelong disability. BPDers can go on to live a somewhat meaningful life, as they get older the rage lessens and they find supportive community, choirs, clubs, groups of friends.

Get out while you can. It only gets worse. Much worse.

GL!

Teaching your children how to use firearms and to hunt.
Posted: 9/19/2009 4:39:41 PM
Why in the world would anyone want to hunt? What pleasure is there in killing for fun?

Heres how to make it at least fair. Go to Bella Coola. Only take a hunting knife. Find a grizzley with cubs. Go up to the momma bear and make threatening gestures. Then take out your knife and see how well you do!

I detest hunters. Dude, if you want to get your rocks off, learn to;

sea kayak for expeditions
mountaineer
back country ski
take up spelunking

If you need adrenaline, dont run around with a huge rifle killing animals.

Take up mixed martial arts, see how well you do against another man, your size, in hand to hand fighting.

Dont run around with a gun thinking your are something tough because you spotted and killed an animal out looking for food.

Hunters, LOL. Detestable.
