Legalizing incest....

so everyone posting on this subject does realise that this brother and sister didn't grow up together, but met as adults and fell in love, right? that it's not a flowers in the attic story... and while i'd not like to live their lives, it would be an understandably heightened attraction meeting someone so much like one's self. it's not hard to figure out why they fell for each other... the sibling thing would probably be the surreal part of their lives as they'd never have lived that through thier childhoods, and for this reason there really isn't the typical social stigma attatched to this particular romance.
on the offspring... granted there can be a myriad of genetic problems for children of such close parentage... but this can happen just by a couple from the same genetic pool having kids... ie: jewish with jewish (tay sachs), black with black (sickle cell) and so on...
does that stop people from pro-creating with others who share their own heritage?
and don't most people have at least one first cousin that they, at some time in their lives, secretly had the hots for?
(last 2 questions are rhetorical)

i agree with everyone who says you should ask him why he does this... we're all islands... and maybe he's just a bit further out to sea than most.
there are a few questions you can ask yourself...
does he still seem interested in you as a person?
does he seem to generally need a lot of personal space?
does he maintain some kind of distance with his friends as well?
.... not in after sex, of course, but if he's just distant in character, you shouldn't take his distancing himself from you too personally, difficult as that may be.
which leads me to the most important question...
can you live with being in a committed relationship with a man who likes distance after sex?
if the answer to the last question is no................
...
ps to Biteme: tried to send you a pm just to call you a hedonist (hehe what else to say about your profile text (?) ) but you have the country where i live (& i'm a born & bred ny-er + a leo) BLOCKED! you don't like spain??? hmmmph silly boy... it's fiesta/siesta land, topless & nudist beaches are the norm, free love isn't frowned upon --- porros y cervezas for everyonel! a true hedonist's paradise!!!

Cyber Beg sites good or bad idea?
Posted:

well there are well-to-do (filthy rich even) philanthropists out there willing to donate to what they find to be a worthy cause... some are called business angels ;) and some people who aren't as fortunate as these well-to-do's may need a boost to help keep them afloat. Plus... wasn't it mentioned that this one particular hard-wood flooring company is offering shares in exchange for donations? that's not all-out begging, now is it. and if that business goes under, how many will end up unemployed, i wonder....
now i've never begged for anything, and don't plan to start anytime soon, but if i had a business i'd put my life into and my parents and grandparents before me and i found it to be sinking, i'd think about doing something like this. oh wait!!.. maybe better to die trying to make the best of it and leave my kid with my debts!!!
also... if there was someone on that site who was in danger of ruin, some normal regular person, due to a serious illness in the family (and crap health insurance in the us) and it could be proven to be legit.. i'd throw em a few bucks to help em keep their house and car... and i'm living from one hand to other as much as the next gal. geeze...
nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it, nothing wrong with coming to someone's rescue. just gotta weed out the scammers.
Torkidon,
do they have requirements on the site? i mean do they check people out, or just let them post an ad if they can pay the 15 bucks....
Pinebreeze,
just curious... do you ever donate to other causes, ie: the red cross, amnesty international, one org.....
Kaos,
could be going on line at a cyber-cafe... though most business have computers and internet as a necessary means of communication, as the telephone was 40 years ago... i've had my pc for about 5 years with very little trouble, and it's not a top-of-the line machine... my broadband is pretty cheap and includes all national calls in the flat rate... and fifteen bucks to get into the program??? if you're in need i think that much can be scraped up to further your cause.
i understand everyone's cynacism, but seriously, don't any of you think that some worthy people who have had some recent hardship, throwing them into financial straits may actually NEED such a place?
Life isn't kind to everyone.

well it doesn't sound like total begging if they're offering shares... maybe it's not a bad alternative to declaring bankruptcy. to some people being in debt at all is a nightmare... of course there will be those who will take advantage of such a project just to make a few bucks, but for those who just want to keep their head above water, maybe not have the bank foreclose on a mortgage due to hospital bills and such, it's an option where before there wasn't one.
i guess if you wanted to donate to someone you'd have to research their cause a bit to be sure you aren't being scammed... but that's par for the course on the internet anyway.

Sisters/brothers... Do They Try To Take Your Boyfriends/girlfriends?
Posted:

poohbear,
i think gallivanting may be right regarding your sister's low sense of self-esteem as her reason for behaving this way, it could also be a form of narcissism and/or nymphomania or some other social disorder or hyper-mania brought on by a need to feel important (again, low serlf-esteem).... whatever it is, it seems to me that she needs some serious counselling. If, at age 16, her mom has to keylog her for being inappropriate with older men on-line, she's probably at the beginning of a very dark and scary road. does she take any kind of drugs? cocaine and/or alcohol (for example) can cause of this kind of behaviour.
as for your guy... any boyfriend that would cheat on you with your (step-)sister, best friend, etc. isn't worth the time of day, and you can and should move onto someone else, you're young and don't need to settle for anyone like that, it will just be wasted time with a dud when you could be with a diamond.... but your sister really sounds like she will probably self-destruct, and you should try to persuade someone (a responsible adult, aunt, uncle, father) to get her some help asap... and then keep your distance from her until she starts to straighten herself out.
ps... my sister has a low sense of self-esteem (aka envy/jealousy) and a very serious alcohol problem (she has an addictive personality) and has often flirted with men i've been interested in for these reasons... of course i think it's crappy that she does this, but if the guy responds... she can have him and all the problems that go along with someone that fickle.

oops.... i did that to someone once... not just on him though, he tried to kiss me and um....
not my fault really, i was only a teenager and my girfriend had given me a way too strong screwdriver (i'd never had hard liquor before that and so was no way used to it) so i went to lie on the sofa feeling pretty ill while she went into the lav to shag her bf and the bf's friend (who wasn't my date or anything) tried to make out with me after i warned him i was about to heave...

oh these are all so funny!!
hey chickie... sounds like a good decision on your part ;).... however i'll have to admit i've done some embarrassing things related to ummm bars now and again... now what were they... :P
i think if i embarrass anyone, it's probably my son, but that's a mother's job!!!
i don't know if i've done embarrasing things on purpose though... maybe as a teenager?? i've never been much for pranks, it just makes me feel too mean, unless i'm really po'd and that's not usually very humourous (ergh).
ok... one really embarrassing moment was at a gig-- the bar was packed and the guy i was into at the time was at the bar -- i heard a note from the bass player, and took off on that (not a good thing to do) closing my left ear with my finger (bad choice, the bass was on my right) as the drums were too close and everything was too loud (typical musician stuff everyone has to be louder than everyone else)... and i was wailing into the mike in my usual powerful manner to keep my voice in front of the band...
...and i see my friend looking at me all wierd and moving her arm up-- up-- up-- and i thought, 'well ok, she's just into the song, in her own kinda strange way'... until i got to the end of the vocals and took my freakin' finger out of my ear only to realise i'd sung the whole tune off key and that she'd been trying to signal me to go higher-- higher-- higher--
mercifully there's a really long solo at the end, (i ran and sat on the floor behind the bar in shame for that part), but the band sounded great and really saved the day, and the crowd was really nice about it and clapped for a long long time LOL... it was soooo horrible!!!!
oh yeah... the tune was zombie (arrgh!)

geez... maybe the chinese are the first documented as having an organised game involving the kicking of round objects around in a field, but i'd venture to guess cavemen had some sort of sporty entertainment that had such elements.
and true enough, as mentioned in earlier posts, american football is a version of rugby, and really a misnomer to call it such as there's a lot more running, throwing and tackling than there is kicking involved... soccer, however looks like what one would expect a sport called football to look like.
and on the ol' peanuts & crackerjacks ball game... isn't that a offshootf of cricket?
c'mon, ya gotta admit it, people were playing sports in england, and the rest of europe and asia centuries before anyone even landed at plymouth rock, or knew the americas existed for that matter, most of the sports (and many other cultural elements) that exist in the us today are derived from other cultures around the world.
aside from native american there is no true indiginous culture in the states, it's all from someplace else, as is the heritage of it's people... and their games ;)

so after leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid, Spain's (possibly europe's) most popular, albeit brittish, 'fútbol' player has gone to LA...
he IS a real cutie (girls, if you haven't had a peek, google him and drool!) now i'm not really a (european) football fan... if i were i'd be for Barça, not Madrid - hehe - so better for the Catalán team that David's gone stateside!
so now.... will davey boy be bigger than pele?? i think possibly so, the sex appeal thing, and i guess besides his sports popularity and whatever his playing skills, that's a big marketing factor... but the big question is will he achieve what the us leagues hope he'll do and make soccer a household word?
'round here you can't tear ppl away from the big screen tv's in the bars & pubs when there's a game on.... doesn't even matter who's playing... locals & tourists, germans, brits, spanish, everyone... all glued to their chairs pints in hand, roaring for their teams (or any team that's beating their cheif competetor) when goals are scored... and the fireworks after the games... all summer long!!
and the even bigger question... if americans finally join europe in the craze for soccer will they even deem to call it football?? LOL if that happens, then he'll surely have earned his 250+ million bucks!
i'm sooooo curious to see how this will turn out... it would actually be one sport that would bring the us out of it's recent semi-isolation and into mingling a bit more with the rest of the world.... and that would be a good thing!

the sad (and scary) thing is that faux (who claim to be fair, balanced
and the most powerful news in the world at every freaking break) is the ONLY american news channel that broadcasts on television internationally... this means that to get a variety of local and national american news there just isn't much of a choice.
cnbc europe and cnn international do have american news spots/hours as well as spots/hours dedicated to other parts of the world, which is always interesting, and then there are the brittish channels such as bbc & sky, and of course the local spanish news channels, but it would be nice if a better quality american broadcast were available 24/7 outside north america...
it would also be nice if the guests o'reilly invites to appear on his show, who are not advocates of the current administration, were allowed to speak without being constantly and consistantly interrupted and insulted...
and it would be really nice if coulter would just shut up and go away or at least make herself easier on the eyes (she'll never be easy on the ears) by having someone properly apply her makeup...

Should Ladies Night at the bars be illegal?

We all know women wouldn't pay extra for watching some drunk guy get up and dance. I think that solves the riddle of why there's no men's nights at the bar.
omg, what an image that has put in my head... i'm in stitches!!!
i can't think of a better argument for the defense of ladies nite vs. men's nite!!

Should Ladies Night at the bars be illegal?

i dont' know that it's really the same concept... the club in question isn't for women only, it's simply got a night that women get a special deal. and the men may have to pay to get in, and pay regular prices for their drinks due to the fact that the club is taking a cut in income to get more ladies in there, which the men surely enjoy PLUS the men don't have to worry about spending the extra money to buy drinks for women (duh!) and everyone is happy in the end.
i'm sure the men get at least one on the house for paying the cover charge, that's a normal policy in most places on such nights, thus insuring that the men won't be hanging out and freeloading or getting girls to buy their drinks cheap (as many are wont to do), but that they at least pay for one drink.
anyone who doesn't like the deal doesn't have to go there on that particular night... pretty simple choice to make.
IMHO...
this guy has a personal vendetta against women probably (?) because his ex-wife was a regular customer at their local spots on ladies night:
"Ladies Night is now illegal,’’ said Horner, a 59-year-old corporate speaker, who says he’s been on an anti-feminist crusade since his wife left him with two young children several years ago and he regularly encountered discrimination against men.
plus, and more to the point, he's found a great way to make some easy money probably feeling vindicated, in some kind of weird, way for being left by a woman every time he cashes a check:
"This is now a violation of law. I will now make it a point to visit as many ladies nights as I can every week. I’ll have my rights violated, then I’ll sue them in county court and collect my $500 (each time),’’ Horner said. "I feel it could net me $3,000 to $4,000 a week easy and I’m going to do it. It takes me five minutes to be discriminated against.’’
civil rights my bootie!

LOL firefighter... my guess is you don't pay the covers ;)
there are all kinds of special privileges in bars and clubs... i worked in rock clubs, in and around nyc for years, and was often on guest lists and was let into the vip rooms of other clubs by professional respect (quid pro quo)... and in the places where i worked, band members that played around town were more often than not let in free and/or given carte blanche... of course having a bar full of musicians (most of them men) brings more people in... especially the ladies... which brings in more guys... etc...
it's just biz....

Freedom from what, exactly? Madrid is the enemy??? Franco's statue has been taken down (finally) in Madrid, much to the chagrin of the small number of Fraquistas that do still exist, but they certainly aren't running the country... Juan Carlos, a great diplomat and peace-maker, has seen to that.
Euskadi is an autonomous community, which means it has it's own government, like a state, and can make it's own policies and laws in certain areas, but being a part of Spain, not only has to follow the laws of the country, but the people have the benefit of belonging to a nation with a stable and growing economy, FREE social medicine (including hospitalisation and procedures of all kinds) and receive aid, protection, etc. from the spanish gov't when they have such a need.
With the coming about of the EU... what's the point of Euskadi ceceeding from Spain... and even if there is a point... there are means other than violent acts and murder to achieve them, which was the whole idea of the cease-fire agreement, now in grave danger of being completely voided.
Considering that most people who live in the Basque country are not ETA supporters, it seems strange to me that an Irishman would be... unless you generally advocate violence to achieve ones goals.

I don't really see how this has anything to do with feminism or descrimination against anyone.... after all it works out for everyone who walks through the door... girls get cheap drinks, boys get to hang out in a place with more girls, club makes more money and becomes a popular place to be. After all, isn't the idea of having a 'ladies night' simply a marketing strategy to get more people into the bar/club?
I'd venture to guess that if the same club had a usual crowd of more women than men and wanted to up their customer numbers they'd go for a boy's night special or maybe have special prices for drinks that men tend to order.
if they outlaw that, better outlaw all those sexy perfume & cologne ads and get the cheerleaders off the sports playing field as well!

Update--- Thursday 05 January, 2006:
Spanish news informs that the body of the second missing man has been found... (I think Ecuador will be very unhappy about both deaths) and... Today a bomb without a detinator containing appx 100k of explosives was found in Viscaya next to an abandoned vehicle believed to belong to Etarras... searches and arrests will be made. ETA still not claiming responsibility for Saturday's bombing... hmmmmmmm
For those interested, here's what the NY Times has to say today on the Madrid car bomb that that flattened a five storey parking lot in Barajas International Airport in Madrid on Saturday morning:
Basque Denial Clouds Role of Militants in Bombing
MADRID, Jan. 3 (AP) — Basque separatists said Wednesday that they were surprised by the car bombing on Saturday of a garage at Madrid’s international airport, and they insisted that a nine-month-old cease-fire was still in effect. The government blamed the Basque armed militant group ETA for the attack.
The bombing prompted the government to suspend plans for peace talks with the separatists.
On Wednesday searchers found the body of one of two men missing in the rubble of the five-story garage, the police said.
Pernando Barrena, a leader of Batasuna, ETA’s outlawed political wing, said that there was no proof ETA was responsible and that the group had not issued a statement claiming responsibility, as it usually does. “The political process has not been broken,” he said. The last fatal attack by the separatist group was more than three years ago.
But a caller who had warned authorities before the explosion said he represented ETA.
Another senior member of Batasuna, Joseba Álvarez, told Basque Radio that the bombing had taken the party by surprise, even though party officials recently said peace efforts were in crisis.
“Nobody expected an attack like the one in Madrid,” Mr. Álvarez said. The bombing wounded 26 people, in addition to the man whose body was found and the missing man.
Batasuna and ETA moderates who favored negotiations appear weakened after the bombing. Their comments on Wednesday also suggested a split between ETA, whose initials stand for Basque Homeland and Liberty in the Basque language, and Batasuna, a split that could further complicate attempts to negotiate a solution to the Basque region’s decades-long struggle for autonomy.
Batasuna is seeking recognition as a legal political party. During the cease-fire, it has asked that Basque separatists now in prisons throughout Spain be transferred to their region, in northwestern Spain.
Shortly after the bombing, the government suspended plans for peace talks with the separatists. On Tuesday the interior minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, went further, saying the process was “broken, over, liquidated.”
The body that was found Wednesday in the rubble was that of an Ecuadorean immigrant, Carlos Alonso Palate, 35, a National Police official said. Mr. Palate was believed to have been sleeping in a car at the time of the explosion.
Another Ecuadorean, Diego Armando Estacio, 19, who was sleeping in another parked car, remains missing.
Alfonso del Alamo, director of Madrid’s emergency services, said 154 charred cars had been removed from the site, all so severely damaged that they were unrecognizable as vehicles. More than 600 cars were in the garage at the time of the explosion, which caused a major fire.
The Madrid city government has estimated that 40,000 tons of rubble will have to be removed from the site, at the airport’s new Terminal 4.
The last fatal attack that ETA has acknowledged was in May 2003, a car bombing that killed two policemen in Sangüesa, in the north.
Until the truce, ETA had kept up relatively low-scale attacks on targets like empty buildings, apparently taking pains to avoid loss of life. The group’s campaign for an independent Basque state has killed more than 800 people since the 1960s.

I think they are beyond getting any kind of support now... they had a chance to move in a more positive direction and really blew it this time. not only did they blow up a major european airport's parking lot, there were casualties as well, and i doubt they'll be forgiven for this.
just so you know, there is a topic in the politics section started by mr. ivan about how silent the us has been on this... both gov't, national news and the people... though i have seen coverage in international press and papers such as the ny times. this silence and seeming apathy is what that topic adresses... not that i'm surprised, but i'm the only other person who has posted there thus far.
if it had happend at JFK or O'hare there would be topic upon topic about it, regardless of who'd done the bombing.... and even more if the offending party had been bush's current nemesis! LOL I know it's not funny, but i have to laugh not to cry...

Eirufirbolg... i'm sorry and don't mean to be rude, but i don't understand much of what you mean to say in your post.
mungojoe...
actually i didn't expect anyone to post in this topic at al l, as americans, by and large, really aren't interested by what happens outside the us when it doesn't affect them directly... btw, although i do live in spain, i'm from ny... just to make it clear that i'm not an outsider dissing anyone elses homeland... but just because it's not on faux news or doesn't have an immediate impact on the us, doesn't mean the shockwave doesn't eventually reach there.... ETA and the IRA are the scourge of europe and involve the countries closest to the us. it's not fun to have home-grown terrorists (i hate that word as it only invokes fear and promotes the cause of such groups) like the kkk and such...
sigh i'll bet most us residents don't even have their forum settings on ALL... out of sight... out of mind....
and i think you're right about the french needing to step in as well... plenty of etarras in france too, and of course the whole idea of having euskaudi as a free country involves lands on the french side of the pyranees.
the thing is, if ETA had changed tactics after franco's death, they might have been able to muster up a political party that could do some good.... they could have stopped being rebelious teenagers and become adult politicians... but noooo... they stick to the low road and so now the whole country pretty much hates them... the political party that was supporting them has been nullified and they, per usual, resort to bombing.
thanks for posting on this :) it's not a joke to those who live here, it's very real.

sexualising breast-feeding is just one of the results of sexual repression in the us, others are more need for porn, debasing women in music and literature, higher sex-crime rates, gay bashing and so on.... you can see it clearly when you live outside the us and look in, it's a hypocritical morality and has its roots in the puritan values that are the heritage of the nation... funny how another part of the heritage is the right to bear arms... (can't say the f word on tv, but kill and kill again, that's ok) but i digress...
sex is used for ads all over the planet, that isn't specific to the us... it has a high marketing value and it sells... still, censorship and political correctness are high and mighty in the us, while most european countries have plenty of ads, shows etc on regular tv with nudity, breastfeeding and the like and it's not considered 'dirty'.
sex isn't dirty unless you make it dirty in your own mind... the human body isn't dirty, it's the best damn machine you'll ever own... breastfeeding isn't dirty, it's lovely and normal and it's a sexually repressed society that sees it as something that needs to be hidden from view. this all just reminds me of george carlin's famous phrase.... 'there are no bad words, just bad thoughts'. in the sense that it's the thought the person viewing the woman and child has, in their own mind, about this event which offends them. and here we are speaking of perceptions, perhaps with feelings of guilt for looking or even wanting to look, that are the product of a sexually repressed society.
that said... it would seem to me that the flight attendant might have asked the woman to cover up to quell her own urge to watch, which she probably didn't understand and may have felt guilty about, thus causing her discomfort.... just an idea...

My theory: I notice that the women who are most likely to go topless on the beach
are unattractive....
sadly, you're going to all the wrong beaches. ;)
...in the recent breast-feeding protest at the airports, I notice most, if not all, were unattractive women. Perhaps it's some sort of hostility towards those women?
there are now breast-feeding protests at airports??? how disturbing if this is true.
on attractiveness... not at all original but a truism... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. and it does seem rather unlikely that this is the cause, i believe it's simply the product of puritanical victorian age social values continued on via the 'moral majority' who aren't the majority anyway... good thing we can show our ankles and necks now, and even vote!

So much for the peace negotiations between ETA and the rest of Spain.
I knew it was ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, basque for Basque Homeland and Freedom) that car-bombed the Madrid Barajasairport parking lot, using a van that had been carjacked in france holding between 500 and 800 kilos of expolsives , before it was even announced on the news that they were responsible... why?
because the police were informed prior to the incident as to where and when the explosion would occur giving enough time to evacuate the area. this has been their custom (trademark really) in the last few years... not that they haven't been responsible for many assasinations and hundreds of deaths in other bombings, they're a bunch of murderers, but they've been very polite about their more recent bombings thus avoiding high numbers of casualties... which is also why it was evident that they weren't involved in the march 11 train bombings in madrid that took so many lives.... that and that they made a lot of noise about not being involved... ETA normally likes to be recognised for thier horrendous 'work'.
as it stands, there are two men missing and 25+ people with injuries, mostly involving hearing loss due to the shock-wave from the blast....
I still don't know why they are still fighting for Euskadi to be a free nation, or why they think this would benefit anyone in the basque country (país vasco) in the long run or why the feel the need to blow things up and kill people to try to get what they want... All of Spain is protesting, and yes, even the Basque people are against this group... they have no cause, as they did Franco's day, but now???? It's sensless.
what is ETA? look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA
for spanish newspaper articles on saturday morning's bombing...
look here: http://www.majorcadailybulletin.es/ (in english)
and here: http://www.elpais.com/ (in spanish)
i hope the IRA doesn't follow suit.

but the flight attendant made this request for her own personal reasons, regarding here own opinions on breastfeeding as more important than the feelings of the mother or child, who were at the back of the plane... it was not an objective request at all, and had nothing to do with the comfort or safety of the plane's passengers.... quite the contrary, it was detrimental to three of them. The stewardess was clearly out of line.
and true as it is that not all women experience even a subtle let down, mine was major... breast pads were a necesity for me, my milk would come up full force, (i could have fed quints!) triggered not only at feeding time, but when eating, lifting anything heavy such as full grocery bags at the supermarket, hearing any baby cry at any given time or place and so on.... it wasn't only very sudden and messy, it was painful... sometimes rushing off to a quiet place isn't an option.

yes, it is shangrila... and it amazes me that with so many horrible things in the world to protest and fight against that something as lovely and natural as nursing a child should be controversial...
what does this say about society?
if it had been me the flight attendant was trying to get off the plane, i most certainly would not have left so complacently... i would have made a fuss (perhaps even a scene) and let her be the one to feel humiliated... as it was noted, none of the other passengers complained, and i'm sure there would have been plenty to stick up for the mom... i might have been booted off the flight anyway, and for making a scene may not have had a good day in court, but no way would i have walked out hanging my head in shame.
in any case, i hope the mom got a good settlement.

it's been while since i've popped in here, but thought i'd put in my two euro-cents in on this topic...
i haven't read all the posts, but enough to get the story and quite a few opinions... one which sticks in my mind from the first page has a line that says 'i'll bet it wasn't a european plane'... yeah, you can probably bet your life savings on that one! LOL
i was born and bred in ny but have lived in spain for 19 years; my son, born here, is 18 now and i can't even count the times i've sat on the main square in our in a breast-feeding coffee-klatch. Nobody complains, nobody cares, most people smile when they see a woman breast-feeding, blanket over the shoulder or not... and geez you have to switch midway through a feeding and get the kid on target, you can't always think about who's watching and what they're thinking no matter what you're doing when it's with a small child.
i have a friend here (at least one) who breastfed her son until he was nearly four... a lot of women used to do this as they though it would prevent them from getting pregnant (not that my friend did for these reasons, we now know this is not a good method of birth control) and it was more economical, especially in large families. anyway... he'd be out there on the plaza playing with his friends and then would come running up to the table for a bit o' milk. not my personal choice, but it didn't bother me or any of the rest of us at the table, the conversation didn't stop for this. well, he's 17 now, one of my son's best friends and isn't weird or damaged or anything as a result of this. i only nursed my son for 7 months because he weaned himself, else i would have gone on for as long as i had good milk, but probably not to far into the teething age.
as long as the mother is healthy, it's better to nurse a child for as long as possible, there's no strict moral rule on this, it's a cultural preference most often, but for the first 6 months babies need their mothers' antibodies as they have not a fully developed immune system until at least that age, and for up to two years isn't all that unacceptable, it's still healthy as long as the milk is nutritious. i think a clue to stop might be when it becomes watery and more clear showing a lack of nutrients.... or if the mom wants to be able to go out and have a few beers from time to time. ;)
in most of europe, topless bathing is the norm and there are plenty of 'naturalist' beaches where bathing attire isn't a requirment, it's a choice. i live on one such beach... not an 'adult' beach, (i will never understand that term), i've seen whole families playing paddle ball in the nude under the summer sun while working on my own no-lines tan... this is a beautiful place with clean, clear sea water, sand, rocks and dunes and forest behind and it is a liberating feeling to be out in nature in and feel such a part of it.
my son grew up here... when i took him to new york, we went to the museum of natural history in a big family group, he was 6 at the time. his two older cousins came upon a showcase of tribal people with only loincloths on and all three boys starting laughing, the older ones at seeing boobs... my son at the bone through the woman's nose... he's seen boobs on the beach his whole life... live ones... and it's just not a 'thing'.
i won't argue about whether or not the woman on the plane was justified... i think everyone can probably guess what my stance is on that anyway... i just feel it's a moot point. the issue here seems to be a much deeper one about society; repression, taboos, shame, embarrassment and their byproducts. I've noticed that the more puritanical outlooks regarding the human body and sexuality are attached to the english language (except maybe for south africans, but they're really dutch anyway) as are the higher rates of sex-crimes.
when people become overly offended by something like breast-feeding there would seem to be a problem in that society, but that's just my opinion. so much better if such things are seen as normal and natural... one less thing to freak out about in this crazy world.
just an aside...
amina leal would have been stoned to death if not for being allowed to live until her child was weaned at the age of 4, the norm in her part of the world, allowing enough time for organisations such as amnesty international to put on the pressure and stop her from being executed for adultery.
and so... to those i know here, nice to see you again, to those i don't, nice to meet you, and to everyone....
Have a Great New Year!

well a friend of mine was there, he said there were somewhere between 200 & 300 thousand... of course people were coming and going all the time...
there was also a get out of iraq/anti-blair demonstration in london, not as many people as in dc, still it was a very large crowd.
i saw the coverage of both on the news... cnn international as well as the spanish news channels, which actually gave more on it than the english speaking ones. it's not over yet, there's more to come tomorrow...
and i have a question...
why has this topic degenerated into low brow degenerate insults thrown at those who would like to see their country change for the better....
answer...
that's all bush supporters are good for.

i haven't caught anything yet, still time until monday... and of course there's the coverage of rita.... i'm so glad that it wasn't as devastating as was initially feared... and that so far there are no recorded deaths... that's a great relief.

**Update on the Impeachment Rally**
i just got an e-mail from impeachbush.org. that included this info:
***********************
On September 24 hundreds of thousands of people will be in the streets in Washington D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles and elsewhere with a clear message:
we, the people, repudiate the criminal actions of the Bush administration.
Instead of basking in glory, thumping his chest and arrogantly proclaiming, “I have a mandate,” it will be the specter of impeachment that will dominate the political landscape.
Immediately following the mass protest tomorrow we will launch the September 26 National Impeachment Lobbying day. We hope that everyone joins in this easy-to-use campaign, which will allow ImpeachBush.org members to directly communicate with members of Congress to demand the immediate filing of articles of impeachment.
if you want to volunteer with the ImpeachBush/VoteToImpeach.org contingent this Saturday you should come to
the ImpeachBush.org tent on the Ellipse on the South side of the White House.
That’s where you can pick up leaflets, ImpeachBush petitions and other materials. People will begin arriving as early as 8:00 am on the Ellipse/White House on buses coming from more than 200 cities.
************************
i realise that rita takes precidence over all of this... and of course, dubbya has gone to texas to watch... good thing for him i guess that he has a decent reason not to be in dc this weekend....
on the news, they asked him if he didn't think that he and his entourage would get in the way of the people working there, he said no, and that he needs to go so he can watch and learn what to do in a situation like this.... 8-| wasn't he supposed to have a clue about that before sitting behind that desk in the oval office?

dmotz...
i don't subscribe to any particular political party... and if you'd read my last post just a little more carefully, you'd realise that the point i was trying to make is that i'm making a great effort in not being divisive about all of this. i wouldn't care if the pres was from the greens!!
if his domestic and foreign poliecies are extremely detremental to the people and economy of the nation and the rest of the world and if he behaves as if doing his job means getting his way regardless of what the rest of capitol hill thinks or how much he is opposed and if he starts to act like king of the world... then i believe he needs a good shove out the door.
if i didn't reply about no democrats saying they would attend the rally, it's because that isn't a particularly big deal to me... also, as hurricane rita is already flooding new orleans and who knows what that storm will do to much of texas and other parts of the gulf shore, i think a lot of the people in washington have their hands full this weekend. (also, i don't think there's any rule that requires me or anyone else to respond to every post)
i don't recall making any posts in this topic about any conspiracy, so i've no idea why you are throwing that one at me at all... are you replying to my post, or just letting off steam?
i'm not shoving my ideas down anyone's throat, if you don't agree with them, fine, debate the issue... and for those who do agree, i hope there's been some information posted here that is useful to you.
on the anti-american comment... it is anti-american to expect the people of the democratic nation of the united states of america to not speak out when they feel their leader is very very wrong... and even more un-american to chastise them for it... it is a civil liberty and responsibility to do so.
i don't have to run for the presidency, nor would i care to, i have the right to vote and to protest if i feel there is injustice.... and yes... i DO believe people can change the world, but we have to want to change things, and we have to do it together (note the word 'united' in the name of our country) without racial, religious or political barriers between us.
have a nice day :)

you know dmotz...
for most of us who oppose bush and his administration, it isn't a case of 'us and them' there are plenty of republicans who aren't happy with the way they are being represented... and those numbers are growing daily.
it's about all kinds of people in the us unifying to get a bad leader out of office and hopefully a better one in. the second part won't be so easy... after all, it will be a politician... but a lesser evil would be very weclome by many at this point.
so dmotz... i have to ask, why do you want to make this some kind of civil war???
don't you believe that in a true democracy the people have the right and responsiblity to speak out when they think their governing bodies are in error? or would you prefer that the president have 'absolute power' and that the people would be considered treasonous for speaking against him in any way shape or form?

awww dallas :) i think it may just be the way ol' dubbya says it himself... or his dad maybe....
if that's the case, maybe the answer to eagle eye's other question about that is that it's making fun of dubbya's pronunciation in general, i guess... (could call him mr. NUKULAR too)
but i think it's mostly to distinguish one bush from the other... different middle initials... and at the same time making a light joke of the pronunciation.

marita...
the reason for aquittal has to do with what the definition of 'sexual relations' was when the question was first posed in the original deposition, as well as the fact that it shouldn't have been asked in such a manner in the first place. i don't think he could have used the fifth ammendment as a recourse, this is only possible if what you say may incriminate you, and having 'sexual relations' isn't a criminal offense. to be fair, there were other accusations made that lead to the impeachment hearings. you can read about the whole thing here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Bill_Clinton
the point i was trying to make is that the whole thing was made into such a big deal by the republican party, with intention to cause a scandal and ruin the man's reputation... slanderous to say the least.... and that nobody has brought any kind of charges against bush for all his crimes against humanity. it makes no sense at all.
if any president is doing exactly as he pleases, regardless of what the rest of washington has to say about it, and is literally 'getting away with murder', that would have to be gwb...
and he needs to GO!

as far as how their marriage is doing, (bill & hillary) i have no idea what really goes on between them, but they are both active people and their zeal to achieve their goals, many of which are humanitarian, hasn't been dampened by the scandal, so i'd guess they're both ok with the whole thing. i think the things that clinton does to try and make the world a better place for everyone far outweigh the lewinsky thing...
i understand what you're saying about perjury... the problem is... he never should have been asked about it in such a fashion in the first place... did anyone take any of the kennedys to court over marilyn?

Capital Punishment~ for or against?
Posted:
9/23/2005 6:43:07 AM
kitty...
you know i appreciate your stance on capital punishment, and i understand your fears and concerns, i have them as well... it's totally realistic to want the most dangerous criminals to never ever be able to endager the general public again. and although there is a risk of them either escaping or being released due to some loophole in the imperfect system, it's a risk i think we need to take... only because it is a much lesser risk that one dangerous person be wandering free than it is for everyone to come to the conclusion that murder is ok in some cases because the state does it too. this makes everyone dangerous.
as you said in the last paragraph of your post.... "we have to remember that they didn't care about their victims or their families when they committed their crimes." this is true... but we also have to keep our moral standards higher than theirs, we have to care about life, we have to care about the families of the victims and the families of the criminals, the other not-so-apparant victims.
it's also true, as you said, that death row inmates are not the majority, that is only because of what are considered to be capitol offenses today, but as long as punishment by death exists, how can we be really sure that the crimes that will warrant this punishment tomorrow will truly be deserving of terminating a life.
i know that your 'pro' is very different than most, it is rational and reasonable with just a healthy human touch of anger and fear. if everyone who was 'pro' treated the issue in this way, i wouldn't be so concerned about the effect capital punishment has on society. truth be told, i'm more afraid of what might happen due to the number and strength of the people who talk about killing another human as if it were something they could easily do and then go out for a good meal... for those arguments that come close to suggesting this be used as a means for a 'cleansing' of society... this is a dangerous and slippery slope... and it scares the sh*t out of me.

Capital Punishment~ for or against?
Posted:
9/23/2005 6:20:01 AM
correct me if i'm wrong, but...
i was under the impression that (in the us) although jurors may not have the option of convicting the accused of a lesser crime than a capital one, that they also have a say in the sentencing... that is, that although the crime may be punishable by death, they jury can vote for execution or life imprisonment, usually based on whether or not there was any remorse shown by, and the general demeanor of the defendant during the trial, and that the judge is obliged to take these votes into consideration when sentencing.
of course i realise that this may vary by state, as all capital punishment laws do.
the justice and penal systems really need a good revision, including stricter policies for inmates. there are surely more dangerous criminals in the general population than on death row... those who have access to outsiders, weekend visits home (i still don't get that one) and other such liberties that often allow them to continue to conduct illegal acts, including murder, through communcation with thier contacts outside the prison walls.
those on death row don't have much opportunity to do such things, they are mostly isolated and all communications, besides those that require privacy, ie: lawyer/religious advisor, tend to be monitored and censored... of course i'm sure there are guards that have their price, but i doubt many of them are working where dead men walk.
i know this isn't always the case... books get published, songs get writting and performed by major bands... i'd guess that nothing goes out of those cells that hasn't been carefully scrutinised, and unless there are some subliminal messages hidden in these publications, (some nuts will find them even if they're not there, especially in the case of charlie) at least the proceeds might end up going to the families of the victims, or to organisations to help victims of violent crimes and their families get through their difficulties.
there are so many excellent posts on this page that take into account that this is an issue about humanity and remaining humane, even though the offenders have not themselves done so.... society doesn't need to be dragged down to the level of sanctioning state murder, but to rise above it and hopefully by doing so move towards a decrease in such crimes.
there is a saying that revenge is best served cold... without emotion... and when the state elects to execute it ceases to be an emotional issue and becomes premeditated, cold blooded murder. it is not a crime of passion, it is not self defense... and keep in mind that there are those who would take the law into their own hands, and kill a person they believe to be guilty of the murder of a loved one (this happens often enough to be tragic) and would do so in a premediated fashion... without proof of guilt... dna or otherwise... and these people, once victims themselves, would also be candidates for capital punishment.
andarial... thanks for those links.

i guess faux 'news' (commentary is more like it) and melrose place aren't entertaining enough :P
but seriously... although noone can truly know what goes on in a relationship between two people, or know what it took to get through that scandal (and that's really all it was... a big overblown scandal) one has to admire the strength and resolution it took for both of them to keep their marriage together under the scrutiny of the public microscope and move forward to persue both their individual and unified goals.
how many people can say they would be able to do the same? i also have to wonder how many of those who can't let go of the moral issue of 'adultery' have never cheated on a spouse or s/o, and for those who have, which i'd venture to guess are the majority, how many have tried to hide it and eventually had to come out (if they even would) and tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth of it all, with all the gory details, to their spouses, significant others, and local news stations....
stones and glass houses come to mind....

just a thought on the clinton cheating thing...
the person who the affair with monica affected the most has, it would seem, forgiven the guy and patched things up so they can both move on.... of course i'm talking about his WIFE!!! if she can get over the fact that her husband was unfaithful to her and the whole thing came out in public like a bad soap opera... why oh why can't the american republicans?
and btw... europeans get a real kick out of the us gov't (republicans) wanting to impeach a pres for such a thing... you have no idea how silly that looks from across the pond.
anyway, i don't care what anyone says, i like clinton and i'm glad he's still around getting things done and shaking things up.
i liked him when he was president, and i like the man he is now. he cares about people and he moves his ass to do something about it.... i wouldn't mind having him back in the whitehouse, and when i hear him addressed as 'mr. president' i feel happy for a brief moment, as if all the horrors that have come about in the last five years melt away, and somehow true diplomacy has replaced the war cry....
but that's just a dream, and the iraq war is real, and the people dead in both gulfs are still dead and more are dying...
still... from what i have seen lately... clinton, as a private citizen, has actually got a lot more power and freedom to do good things for the underpriveleged and uniting people to work together towards universally beneficial goals than he did as president. His obvious true-felt compassion and empathy for the more unfortunate people on the planet can be heard in his voice and seen in his actions... that alone is much much more than anyone can say about the soulless empty-hearted man who is in the whitehouse now.
hmmm i guess i wouldn't mind hillary in the whitehouse... a woman who can forgive her man's transgressions, even though they must have not only hurt but embarrassed her.... and on the plus side... bill could continue the work hes' been doing and still have a very strong connection to capitol hill.
i say give the man a harum if he wants one!
(if that's ok with hilary, of course... oh give her one too!!! )

canucksailor...
what's wrong with an interfaith ceremony? it's not an obligation, it is non-denominational, and as the rally lasts for three days... saturday, sunday and monday (two of those days are sabbaths/holydays for many) i think it's rather reasonable to offer a ceremony that will be able to handle the the amount of people who are expected to attend....
not only that, a non-denominational ceremony seems to me a very good thing in times of such religious discord... rather a building of bridges rather than walls.
i wonder if there will be any wiccan bits in there ;)

lola...
the justice for katrina victims is part of the no more iraq war demonstration, (cindy sheehan is involved in organising this) which is the main event... (i think there is a separate one regarding the impeachment issues)... i don't think it's specifically for impeachment, rather to insist that questions about what happened will not be allowed to go unanswered. it also deals with money that is being used to fund the iraq 'war' be directed towards the katrina victims... and now, of course, we have rita about to strike... i can't believe the enormity of this storm, it's truly a horror! and all those people who have already been evacuated from their homes for the one storm are now on the run again. and no, i don't think the true tragedy of what happened has been realised, and after rita hits, i wonder if we'll ever really know...
*********
now.... not exactly on this issue, but it is about the people of the world coming together and making things change for the better... and as clinton has been brought up again....
i've just finished watching the world summit meeting organised by clinton, who has invited bono, queen rania, paul wolfowitz, and all kinds of people working to abolish hunger and poverty in the world... very interesting... it's also about environmental issues and clean energy, how to solve the problem of religious extremism, the pros and cons of the precious right of free speech ie: when it's used to incite violence and murder... and lots of other stuff!!!!
one comment just made was that americans believe that the us gov't gives more funding towards this cause than any other country, and ummm they don't, not even close....
nor do the american people, (europeans are the biggest donators) but, bono said he thinks this is because most americans don't believe the money they donate will get to where it's needed, and so an idea was proposed to educate, not just americans, but everyone as to what is spent where and by whom.
clinton said that he's happy that now he can get aids medicine to people in impoverished nations via private organisations at a fraction of the cost that had to be paid to do this through the us gov't while he was president.
basically it's about the world's people coming together to make everything better for everyone. hmmm... that's pretty much what i believe in... all together, we CAN make a difference.
well, it's hard to type and listen at the same time... i'll try to recap what i can remember tomorrow... i hope some of you have been able to watch this.... an hour was too short.
*******
ps to lola... i think clinton is planning an independent investigation ;)

yes of course!!
it's our duty and responsibility as american citizens to speak out when we believe that those who run our country are running it into the ground... isn't that what a democracy is all about?

jack mack, you said...
I'd really like to see the list of charges this movement has come up with to rally hundreds to sign on to impeach Bush. Do you have a link to this supposed movement website or perhaps their agenda and changes??
so to answer your question....
nothinheavy posted this link on the first page, where there are a few other links that might answer your questions.... too bad you missed them :(

lola,
i was wondering myself why the impeachment issue seemed to be off the main agenda, even though there is also a call for justice and to hold those responsible accountable for the illegal war and occupation of iraq and oh-so-slow response to the katrina disaster.
i was told, though i've not seen anything about it yet, that there will also be a demonstration with the main focus being impeachment, for bush and several other high officials, on the same day as the 'stop the war - justice for katrina victims' demonstration. i hope this is true and the many will be able to participate in both.
i wish i could afford the air fare (and lodging) to get there!!

Here's an update on what is now showing on the United for Peace site...
i'm no longer seeing the main agenda of the rally to be impeachment, persay, but it does call for justice regarding those responsible for the illegal iraq invasion and justice for the vicitms of katrina who suffered due to lack of government response, as well as a call to end the occupation of iraq and aid the people there in recovery.
Some of the salient points of the Iraq Campaign are:
· After Katrina, fund full recovery of the Gulf Coast, not War on Iraq.
· Stop Torture in Guantanamo, in Iraq, and Around the World!
· End Congressional Spending on the War
· Military Families Travel to Iraq to Say Bring the Troops Home!
· Where Next for the Global Anti-War and Anti-Globalization Movements?
I'll keep posting updates, but for detailed updates and information, please visit the site, there is far too much to post here... there is also info available there on transport and housing if you are planning on attending the rally.
the link is in my second post on page one of this topic.
