Long Distance Online Dating...How do you do it properly?

My sweetie is long distance. Like really far away long distance (days travel - by plane). It's not easy, requires patience, communication and trust.

We have had to compromise on talking every day. While I am an early bird (and in turn he is a night owl) there are days where all we can do is text. When we are together we sync our time schedules. The most we can go without seeing each other (on skype) is a few days. We spend more time talking on the weekends. That said, if either of us is having a bad day all we have to do is send a message and we make sure we see each other that day.

We plan for our time together. It's not easy for either of us to have to wait to be together again, but we both know that this is just a step in our relationship. So, we both are learning a lot more patience. :-) That said, we are planning on when he'll move here, permanently. So there is an end-goal (and date) - not an open-ended hope this works one (laughing).

There are little things we do that keep the romance alive. A picture, a card, a trinket, a text with an inside meaning... little things, which have great meaning. We are both clear and realistic in our expectations. I don't expect him to always know what I'm thinking and he shares as well.

A final thing that I feel is important - we express gratitude to each other for each other, frequently. We let each other know (communication) that we treasure the time we get, that we adore each other and that while this is hard it's not going to be this way forever.

I wish he lived only an hour away - we talked about that before... and he said, if he lived an hour away he wouldn't be living an hour away - he'd happily commute that hour... :D

Traveling to another country to meet someone

If the only reason you are contemplating this trip is because of this person who, "feels he's fallen in love" then perhaps now is not the time to go. Especially with the questions that have recently arisen. If you want to go because it's something you've always wanted to do, then go for it, have a great time with your friend and enjoy your travels.

Unless you two have officially committed to each other (and that requires talking to each other about it) you have no reason to be upset if he's on a dating site talking to others. Until you commit to each other, and that does not mean you committing to waiting for him, then you are both single and free to converse with whomever you choose.

Listen...

LDR's are hard. While you may be talking on the phone, web-chatting and communicating in other ways, there's more to it than that. It takes dedication, trust, faithfulness and the desire to work towards being together. You have to think about location(s), finances, families, all of it. If neither of you are willing to move (yes, willing and able) then it's really not worth the effort. You can love someone, you can treasure them, but you have to be realistic.

I like the webcam. It allows you that face to face interaction when someone is far away. Yes, you can be silly. Yes, there are pervs out there (weed 'em out), but for the most part there's nothing wrong with it as long as you don't do anything you wouldn't want posted on the web. The report and block feature is a handy little button if someone gets out of line. :D

I video chat for work (across states and often with coworkers in other countries) so it's nice to be able to talk "face to face" without someone having to travel. With travel restrictions (at work) it's easier to work on something together that way and the company I work for encourages it.

I also video chat with my family and friends. It's great because we are scattered all over. It allows us to maintain that connection and not just be voices on a phone. Much more intimate and personal that way.

The most interesting request was from a potential employer. They were in another state looking to fill a position locally. Instead of flying me out there to meet, which would cost plane, hotel, car, etc., they wanted to video chat. I thought that was a nifty way to use Skype.

Technology is great. At least, I think so anyway.

There are no expectations. Communicating with him is important, so yes, talk to him about this.

He was pretty clear that he is making this change because he is going to focus on building from that first date. Kinda sweet if you ask me. But I'm a sap for that stuff. I don't think it's necessarily a sign of controlling behavior, unless he demands you do the same. As far as rushing, I don't see that either. He could very well be the type that cannot date more than one person at a time and so, in order to avoid distractions or window shopping, he has hidden his profile so he avoids contact from others.

You need to stop looking at every first meet or handful of texts like it is the beginning of something huge. It is just a cup of coffee or a walk in the park....nothing more. you may decide after 2-3 meets you don't even like the guy. Expect that to happen 99% of the time. Not everyone is a match for you.

Now OP, you obviously had way to much time to think and act this through. Your plan was bent on proving that he was lying to you. Well, you got your answer. What would you have done if he hadn't? Would you have told him of your plan and how you can "now trust him" because he didn't take the bait?

Okay, so you tried for 10 months and now you realize it's over and you are on here.

Here's my advice. It's free, so remember that.

What you do is you get your divorce.
You give yourself time to heal from this.
You rediscover who YOU are as a single person.

Finally?
You put off dating until all the above are in order.

I had a very dear friend tell me that it would take at least 2 years to be ready to date AFTER the divorce was finalized. He said even if you were separated for 2 years it isn't until the divorce is finalized you start the process (because it is a process). Gosh, was he right. Not everyone heals at that pace, some take longer, others a shorter amount of time.

Take your time and enjoy the forums. They're fun.

I think that beauty is subjective. While you may think that woman in the club/bar is "smoking hot" there is another man who finds nothing appealing about her.

What I find attractive may repel someone else. We all have our own tastes, doesn't make it right or wrong.

So you are getting first dates. Congrats! That's better luck than some.

To answer your question. If you were VERY persistent (even in a nice way) with me, I would walk away and would not meet you. It's not that you aren't a decent enough looking fellow, but there is something that is a turn off about someone being VERY persistent.

I will text with someone before meeting, in addition to talking on the phone. If there's anything that raises my eyebrow (and not in a good way) I will decline a date and cease communication (after telling them). That's why I text someone and talk to them on the phone. That's just part of the getting to know you phase.

I prefer a man who is self-sufficient. I have dated men with varying levels of education and varying jobs. I worked with a day-porter who had a masters degree, so a higher degree doesn't necessarily determine what type of work one will get. Have to say though, this day-porter loved his job, so it didn't matter to him.

I prefer to date someone who is self-driven, loves what they do and can take care of themselves financially. Degree doesn't matter, but that's because I never finished mine and I work as a professional making decent money. Everyone has preferences, no reason to look down on someone for what they are drawn to.

My tattoos have personal meanings to me and my final one (well, if it's my final one) will have significant meaning. That said, mine are discreet, which means you wouldn't know unless I showed them. I also have a nose piercing and don't give a flip what others think. It should be noted though that I get a lot of compliments on it. Even from straight-laced, conservative men. :p

My daughter has a Marilyn piercing and must say she is an amazingly beautiful young woman. She also has an arm band tat and is planning a half sleeve. She doesn't care what others think of her ink or piercing and it's that confidence that draws people to her.

When I first started this site I actually was looking to date. Some of the comments I received were pretty crass as well. I've now since learned to ignore them. Then again, with a hidden profile, I don't show up so the only way they find me is through the forums. There are some fantastic people on here. Some give great advice to others.

Most people don't read profiles. To test that theory I actually put on mine (once upon a time) a statement in it that I'd give a brownie point to a person who read it and could actually communicate with me what they found of interest. It was interesting to see there were a few who actually read it, only to ask what the brownie point was worth. :-)

Ahhhh back to lurking... :)

If POF was strictly a dating site then there would be no option to choose friends, nor would there be forums. The forums are a hoot. :)

People are always going to find a reason to complain. Small people with small minds look for reasons. I choose to ignore them. laughing
