DietCoke®Guy: You may not agree with me, but that does not make my logic "mushy". Let's try to keep the insults to a minimum shall we? I don't recall making personal attacks against those with whom I disagreed.

My point was that government is not infallible. Just because a government declares something, does not mean that it should be accepted without question. Classic example being the "Nuremberg Laws". It may have technically been "the Law", but it most certainly was not right.

Spellingbee: The government could declare: free jello and pudding a right as well, it would not make it so.

One also has to take issue with the concept of "compulsory" education. What about those who "Home School"? Should they be forced to attend a state run school, like they are in Germany? Just another case of government butting in where it does not belong.

Thorndyke: No offense but you missed the point. There are structural differences between a University and High School, as there is between a High School and Elementary School.

My question is: What is the principle which leads you to consider a High School Education a "Right" but not a University Education?

Sas007: Yes, Secondary Education is a "choice"; most things in a free society are.

You are also correct in stating that getting a degree does not guarantee a higher salary, though general speaking, university grads do make more money. That is why it irks me to hear university students whine about their tuition fees. They are the primary beneficiary of their own education, so why the hell should I have to pay for their education?

Is Secondary Education A Privilege Or A Right?

In a word: Neither.

Secondary Education is like any other good or service one is free to purchase in a free market economy. The word privilege implies that you are being afforded something which is denied to others. I don't feel privileged purchasing an education, anymore than I feel privileged when I purchase a dozen eggs.

The "Classical" concept of "Rights" is that every Individual is born with the universal Rights to Life, Liberty, and Property. Looking through most Constitutions you will see most "Rights" and "Freedoms" can easily be categorized into one of the three "Classical Rights" of Life, Liberty, and Property.

Secondary Education is most certainly not a Right. There has been a proliferation of Phony Rights of late. Special Interest Groups speak of a "Right To Education", "Right To Health Care", "Right To Public Housing", "Right To Welfare", etc. Undoubtedly many people want: an education paid for by other people, health care paid for by other people, housing paid for by other people, a welfare check paid for by other people; however, wanting something does not elevate it to the status of a Right.

What these Social Lobby Groups are really saying: is that they, or the people for whom they lobby, have a "Right" to My Property, My Hard Work, My Labour. I afford them no such intrusion.

My Life is mine own. My Liberty is mine own. My Property is mine own. I regard these proclamations of "Phony Rights" as an attack on my Legitimate Rights as an Individual.

Apparently she had a thing for Methadone, the same opioid that killed her son. Though it is too early to say for sure, I suspect it was an overdose of Methadone that killed her.

I believe Methadone is responsible for more overdose deaths than Heroin, but ironically, happens to be the opioid most used in the treatment of Heroin Addicts.

An interesting fact: Methadone, the longest acting opioid, was invented by the Nazis. Hermann Göring used Methadone regularly.

Interludesolo: My criticism of the media is well founded. News may sell, but bad news sells more. Which is why journalists like to use scare headlines to increase readership/viewership. The next time you watch a newscast pay attention to the types of words they use: "crisis", "calamity", "pandemic", "epidemic", "before its too late!", etc.

Also, for what its worth, I never wrote anything about cigarettes not causing cancer. Please don't put words in my mouth.

Many people genuinely believe the Boiling Frog Myth. If I remember correctly, Al Gore even used it in his propaganda film: "An Inconvenient Truth". That is, when he wasn't whining about losing the election, lamenting his son's accident, talking about his family's past as tobacco farmers, or looking reflectively off to the horizon.

I remember in early elementary school being warned by my teachers about the threat of "Deforestation". That by the time I grew to adulthood, Canada would be a barren wasteland with nary a tree in sight. A few years later, deforestation was replaced by the threat of "Acid Rain". The Great Lakes were becoming lifeless pools as acid rain was bound to kill off all the fish and surrounding vegetation.

Perhaps my views on schooling are old fashioned, but I think teachers should stick to teaching the basic courses, and stop indoctrinating with scaremongering doom and gloom. That young children are being exposed to this by their teachers, disgusts me.

Interludesolo: The boiling Frog thing is an urban legend. If you put a frog in boiling water it will die. It you put it in cool water and slowly heat it, the frog will jump out when the temperature gets uncomfortable.

However, in reference to man causing Climate Change, the boiling Frog myth is a pretty good analogy. The are both cases of myth being accepted as fact.

Global Warming & Us
Posted: 2/5/2007 2:45:28 PM
I've noticed that at any particular time there are three types of stories the media tends to hype. The Environmental Bogeyman, the Drug Epidemic, and the Health Pandemic.

The Environmental Bogeyman of the day is Climate Change, prior to that it was Acid Rain, prior to that it was Deforestation.

The Drug Epidemic of the day is Crystal Meth, prior to that it was Crack Cocaine, prior to that it was Heroin.

The Health Pandemic of the day is Bird Flu, prior to that it was HIV/AIDS, which unlike Bird Flu, does have significant fatalities associated with it. Bird Flu has killed all of 160 people in 3 years. Hardly the Global Pandemic the media is making it out to be. Statistically, you are more likely to be eaten by a shark.

The greatest 'Epidemic' we face today seems to be Media Hype!

What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...?

Brewster McCloud from 1970. A rather strange Robert Altman movie starring Bud Cort.

Even more strange was how I watched it. I saw the whole movie in 10 separate parts on You Tube. I've seen the odd documentary on You Tube before, but this was the first time for a full length feature film.

God, I love the Internet!

Prince Harry said: The vill at westwood and portage has BOTH 5 and 10 pin...

That is a good idea: to pick a place that has both. Then those who want 5 pin can play 5 pin, and those who want 10 pin can play 10. I've never played 10 pin myself, but would be willing to give it a go. Of course the beauty of going someplace that has both is that you can play a round of one type and if you don't like it, switch to the other.

Prince Harry: Is that the only place that has both, or do you know of others?

Doug: Just don't wait too long to get your ticket buddy. I went on a "regular" Sunday trip in August and they where completely sold out, all 299 seats! Since this is one of their "special events" it will be sold out for sure.

Tickets are pretty easy to order, just fill in a short form online and they call you within 48 hours to get your credit card info. Also, ask them to mail the tickets to you, which they will do free of charge.

Posted: 8/24/2006 6:09:19 PM
It has to start as a thread in the regular forum.

Post your notice in the regular forum; then send a message to Bigfish or one of the moderators with a link to the thread and ask them to move it to the Events forum.

To put the link in your message right click in the address bar: "forums.plentyoffish..." and select copy, then right click in the message box and hit paste.

Its as simple as that.

Katkats: You probably just made two post in the regular Manitoba forum. The system does not allow you to post directly in the "Manitoba Singles Events" and will instead place it in the regular forum.

To get an "Events" thread you need to post a notice in the regular "Manitoba" forum and then contact a moderator or administrator, like Bigfish, and ask them to move it to the events forum.

It would be nice if people could take a few seconds to hit the "Remove Me" button if they change their mind or can't make it out. It's a matter of common courtesy.

Unfortunately there are a number of people with no intention of every going to one of these events, yet sign up for everything, simply as a way of self promotion. I can think of a couple "intimate encounter" bimbos right off the top of my head.

When I see one signed up to one of my events they don't have to worry about removing themselves from the list, I do it for them.

I think the best mindset to have when going to these functions is: "I'm going there to have a good time", rather than: "I'm going there to met someone".

I think many people get overly nervous about going to POF functions by looking at them as "dates". Instead, look at them as a opportunity to do something that you don't normally have a chance to do: horseback riding, train ride, bowling, fishing, costume party, etc.

If you're worried about meeting a group of strangers then go with a friend. If you happen to meet someone that you would like to get to know better that is just icing on the cake.

Thanks to all those who attended: av8rflygrl, Trish_Angel, winnipeggal74, Cowardly_Lion and companion.

The train was absolutely packed, not a vacant seat in sight. Though there was no air conditioning on that hot day all the windows could be opened which provided a refreshing breeze that made for a very comfortable ride. Vendors and booths where various trinkets, food and refreshments greeted our arrival in both Grosse Isle and Warren.

I can certainly recommend the Prairie Dog Central for those who have thought about stepping aboard, but have not yet done so. Some of those wooden coaches are as much as 100 years old. It's more than a train ride, its a ride on history.

See you on the rails.

Sorry for the small picture size. Unfortunately I made a colossal boo boo when putting them on my computer and, after making small copies, deleted the originals from my camera.

Edit: Well that won't work. When uploaded the pictures are doubled in size which makes them look like absolute garbage.

Oh well, for those who went and would like to see the small pics just send me your email address, you might be able to use them in your profile.

I'm taking the shuttle bus from the Clarion Hotel near Polo Park at 9:30am myself, probably get there 10-15 minutes later.

Well I did not tell the Prairie Dog Central ticket office that people would be mentioning "Plenty Of Fish". I just wrote: ask for seats on coach 107, which is the last coach on the train, holds 72 people as does coach 106, but the main reason I picked it was that it is the nicest coach they have.

I actually didn't know they sold tickets from front to back, but I'm certainly not complaining.

As for my tickets I'm holding them in my hand right now! Actually they are in the drawer, but you get the idea.

As far as I'm concerned the more the merrier. If a fish can still snag a ticket or two that is great.

Coach 107 holds 72 people but if that is full there are the other coaches. The Prairie Dog Central has a maximum capacity of 299 people.
