Bells Palsy
Posted: 8/30/2009 2:26:08 PM
I had Bells Palsy when I was 29 and still have lingering side affects from it but Hey ??? like you I woke thinking I'd had a stroke. I strongly suggest getting more than one opinion because prescribing acyclovir, is at least 5 or 6 years out of date as it relates to bells palsy. The only things that helped me were: Eyebrow raises, kissy faces, massage, the steroids (though I started them a little late to be effective), Chewing gum (trying to blow bubbles, you will need lots of gum because it will fly right out of your mouth), and pretending I was a retard at the store when someone would stare! Have fun with it you only get some many times in your life when you can drool with an excuse.

Just out of curiousity do any of the following apply for you: Shingles, Chicken Pox in your lifetime, or a recent Flu shot?

And no matter what any one says take the steroids. your muscle will atrophy to an extent during the process and the steroids really helped with that.

What gym behavior annoys you the most?
Posted: 8/30/2009 1:54:21 PM
The only thing that annoys me at the gym is when my iPod dies, everything else I can let slide. But there are some pretty funny characters there.

Suprised this thread hasn't gotten deleted for redundancy though.

Andrew ..... All a big guy needs to enjoy riding a bike is a good gel seat pad. I am lucky to have a very nice mountain bike and love it. And I am still 40 pounds heavier than you.

But seriously for me, like i said before was the the IPOD. I struggled to get through 40 minutes of cardio before I started bringing the music.

I bring an iPod loaded with music. Started out on the recumbent bike. Then moved on to the elliptical. I also jog laps with my kids. We will jog one lap and walk the next.....

But what was more important and explosive in the weight loss department for me was changing my diet. It was amazing. First 3 months of this year I lost 30 pounds. Sort of hit my next plateau but I will get passed it. Cardio isn't just about weightloss or creating a calorie deficit for us big guys. As its' name implies it makes are Cardio Vascular system strong and healthy.

Shingles?!
Posted: 5/5/2009 9:33:02 AM
I had shingles at 30 ( very rare) and I guess i am among the minority as it didn't really bother me a whole lot. hydrocortisone helped more than anything else, with the itching\burning sensation, sounds weird but it worked for me.

One thing I would warn against in the future is the flu shot! somewhere between 50 and 70% of people who have shingles will develop bells palsy. Got the flu shot and 3 days later one half of my face wouldn't move. It was like I had a stroke! It was a life changing event.

The flu shot which is chicken pox with the cytoplasm removed, and that years flu concoction injected with egg product is a trigger for bells palsy. Bells palsy, shingles (Herpes Zoster) and chicken pox are all closely related.

There is a huge hubub about MSG. Is it a healthy??? The jury is still undecided. No big deal as long as you aren't allergic! Is the KFC grilled stuff a healthy option? Probably not. But not because of the MSG.

Jumbie stold the words out of my mouth. TOO MUCH!

I bring an Ipod loaded with a bunch of different stuff. Weight lifting days I am there 1 - 1.5 hours depending on how much I socialize, Cardio only days 40 minutes. Or I go run with my kids instead of being in the gym.

diet science and weight lifting?
Posted: 4/22/2009 11:53:28 AM
Salmon Steak. Google is your friend here. Google weightlifting routines, there will be enough information pop up for you to read until you die. You can also look at videos to see the proper form. You can do a similar search for weightlifting diets.

35-40 pound a month would be phenomenal progress though unrealistic. Aim for 5 lb a week gains. Some weeks you will hit it some you won't. If you are consistently not hitting these gains, your diet is off or you are overtraining and not giving your muscles enough rest.

Overweight and dating
Posted: 4/14/2009 4:35:29 PM
I had a glandular problem for years. Every time my elbow gland would bend it was stuffing some processed hunk of garbage into my mouth gland. Four years ago I went to my Dr. he gave me three options, Gastric Bypass, Getting off my A$$ and doing something about it, or die young. In those exact words. We made a 5 year plan and to date I have lost 120 pounds. That is enough to make a 5' 4" (or so) full grown women. I have lost an entire person and have about 35 pounds to go. Though I don't really have an end goal weight. It is about teaching my kids how to be healthy and be around as long as I can. Want to get grandkids all hyped up and then send them home laughing!

Lets be real for a second here. The types of women I am attracted to, are not attracted to a big ball of blubber. Brutal? Not really.

Water Fasting--who has done it?
Posted: 4/8/2009 9:32:11 PM
Well here in Sacramento, they had an infamous contest put on by one of the local radio stations. Hold your WEE for a WII. The winning contestant DIED hours later due to water toxicity.

And no London lass it does not cause cardiac arrest. It causes cells to burst. And unfortunately one of the most prone is the brain cell.

HO2, I think ( yes that is dangerous) that many of us on here agree with you too a degree. But you have posted some outlandish stuff. Heart muscle catabolization after twelve hours. Really so if I sleep for ten hour an skip breakfast my heart muscle is getting ravaged? Really? Common sense calls that nonsense. The original posters 45 day crap? Madness. What we are ALL saying is you haven't proven anything except an ability to use google and pull up sh1t about aboriginee's, and an 8 person trial? Is fasting a long term method to better health fvck no. but is all the sh1t you propose close to true? Nope!

I also posed a very interesting question to the University experts. What happens to the Human body after a 24, 48, 96 hour fast? With adequate water of course. Specifically liver and kidney function. Muscle catabolization, Blood Glucose level, and anything else I should know but am missing? Will post the results.

Getting your kids to eat the Healthy foods we make?
Posted: 3/31/2009 7:42:16 PM
I guess everyone is fixated on the yogurt. It is only one example of a healthier choice. Like I have said several other times it is healthier than the Ice cream we ate previously. 100 calories versus 400 is good any way you slice it. My kids Eat the veggies, it is the sides I struggle with.

I have about 15 different dishes in my arsenal. I know how to make another 50 - 75 that my kids would never eat or are not healthy for you. I guess a better way to phrase my original question is what sides do you make that your kids like? Mind you I have kids from 4 - 14.

Additionally, going from Ice Cream to 100 calorie yogurts is a huge step. 6 grams of protein for the 100 calories is a great trade off. When you consider how much fat a bowl of Ice cream has. We are talking about a net savings of at least 20% in fat. A person who does not have kids may have a hard time understanding the challenge.

Zenbeth - Yeah I involve the kids when I cook. They enjoy it. Even the little ones help cut up mushrooms or massacre an onion. The older ones I am teaching how too cook healthy. Explaining why we are doing what we are doing.

My son just doesn't like lettuce in a salad? He likes a piece of lettuce on sandwiches. I only buy romaine, butterleaf, etc. So he will have cucmbers with mushrooms, red onions, hard boiled egg whites, radishes, bell peppers, and Celery. I am trying to get into beets and garbanzos as they are good for you. But they are an aquired taste!

JB III I hear what you are saying. I do lead by example! It is the only way. I eat very healthy, though my kids aren't going to be eating a can of chunk light tuna anytime soon. And the light yogurt I bought today has 100 calories per serving, and no fat. 6 grams of protein. Sure they aren't perfect but it is much better than the two scoops of dreyers we had once a week 6 months ago. Each better food choice builds upon the last.

We started intervals last week together, and my kids love it, so healthier food choices and more physical activity, seems to be a huge step in the right direction.

Appreciate your input.

I make my kids try something everytime I make it, at least 4 bites. But my oldest son doesn't like lettuce, so when we have salad he has cucumbers with the rest of the ingredients. I don't see what I would gain by making him sit there and eat lettuce? Perhaps you can enlighten me JBIII? Seriously, not trying to come off as condescending.

I go shopping today. I am going to load up on more fruits and veggies. We replaced chips with soy nuts. Ice cream with yoplait fat free yogurt. You just throw them in the freezer, the kids love them. I will have to post a similar question in the cooking forum, for some other ideas.

By the way Jumbie and JBIII, I pick my battles with my kids. And food just isn't worth it. I have had to sit at a table until I finished my liver. Taught me nothing, except that I HATE liver. I can take my kids to any restaurant and they are so well mannered I always get compliments. You guys usually have pretty good advice so I will let it slide this time.

BritishKris, the fish part is easy. We go fishing alot and the kids are always excited to eat something we caught. Stripped bass baked\ barbecued in foil with lemon, onions and some sea salt is always a hit!

Thanks to all who have responded!

My kids range from 4 to 14. The older ones are embracing it and help with dinner. My younger ones are like what the heck is this stuff. Even when I let them massacre the onions with a butter knife. Getting them to eat fruits and veggies is never a problem. They are just accustomed to having some rice a roni or some other boxed nightmare as a side. If they don't like what we are eating they can always have a bowl of lowfat granola. I guess like anything it just takes time. The little ones like the ranch made with non-fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream, for dipping raw veggies. Besides I do the shopping so just don't buy alot of garbage food anymore. If they want to buy candy they have to use their allowance.

HO2

Bro I work for a hospital and searched our Clinical Resources Center ( a repository of research data that is shared by every Medical School and Research center in America and Canada) none of it comes close to proving your point. In fact quite the opposite, it stated that fast cycling (one day fast one day off) is actually good for you as long as you are not Diabetic, already begun Chemo, pregnant, or a Child. This was basically the state humans were in thousands of years ago. Our bodies were designed for this type of torture! The OP's 45 day fast or whatever, is idiotic.

I even read your links, they completely disprove what you infer from them???? A study of 8 people....... Laughable. 500 people, without several control groups would be discounted.

I don't expect you to admit anything. Holding your breath is much more dangerous than a 5 day fast .

You know HO2, I have been told (by women no less) the sexiest thing a man can do is admit when he is wrong.

first it was the heart muscle is catabolized after 24 hours, now about glucose levels and insulin. Next up aboriginees????

Give it up man you lost a long time ago. The only way to save face and any credibility you might actually have is to admit you are wrong and move on. That would at least show a little class.

Problem with chunk light Tuna is it tastes terrible once you have eaten Whole white Albacore. I switched to snows chicken breast in a can and a fish oil supplement. I eat it with hard boiled egg whites ( throw away the yolk) and half a tblsp of kraft olive oil mayo, little fresh ground pepper, and some sea salt!

Glucosamine chondroiton question
Posted: 3/25/2009 11:36:27 AM
Nola Chick, I would have to disagree on the cost issue. I started eating MUCH healthier a few months ago and my food bill has definately increased. I spend an extra $80 a month. But it is worth the reward! I need to add that it is for me and my kids so those numbers would be much lower for a single person.

A great site to look up foods is nutritiondata.com You can enter recipies and it breaks them down for you. It is pretty cool, and free. No spam from the site either!

Edit: trying some fish oil capsules for some joint pain I will post later on how it goes.

Tinnitus, MAKE IT STOP!!!!
Posted: 3/17/2009 7:59:00 PM
So Monalee1's advice for everyting is to avoid dairy. She threw in raw veggies again. This will have zero effect. I have a ringing in one ear since the age of 19 (almost 18 years) because of an ear infection that changed the shape of my ear cannal. No matter what you eat or what you do it will still ring. To be completely honest, you will get accustomed to it. Sucks but that is my reality. I always sleep with a fan and it helps. Dr's said they could operate but there would be a 30 percent chance of complete hearing loss! Fvck that I will deal with the ringing. Sometimes I don't notice it at all. But if there is a ringing within earshot it can be quite debilitating.

I didn't read every post but would have to say most of these responers have their head up their arse! Are the ladies going to be beating down the door? Nope! It will take a great amount of time and counseling for you and the kids to get past this. But resigning yourself to life with rosey palms is BS.

I speak from a perspective similar to yours although I have my 4 50\50. Pay a crazy amount of child support and am at work every day that I don't have them! I still manage to date and have turned down a number of women because they wanted more than I could offer. It will take time, I would say at least 2 years before you are ready to date. I am 2.5 years on the other side of said ordeal and just enjoying being me. Going to the gym regularly and turning down women left an right at shows. My friends just slap their heads and ask me if I have lost my mind. I laugh and say not yet! But when the right one comes along i will!

Unions... For the worker? or for themselves?
Posted: 3/11/2009 7:25:49 PM
Jack just an alternate view. I work for a hospital, where the Nusres and Service workers are part of a union. They will get a 10 percent increase over the next 3 years. Because IT is not unionized, we get $0. So while there is some problems with inflated union wages there are some inherent problems in some areas with not being union.

Can you imagine if IT unionized?
