BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Ted Kennedy Dies At Age 77
Posted: 8/28/2009 8:02:58 PM
I viewed the "Irish Wake" Celebration of Life this evening on CNN. Whether you like Edward"Ted"Kennedy or not that is up to you.I liked John McCain's speech this evening..he is quite a man. I voted for Obama, I admiredJohn McCain's speech this evening, although he had major differences with Ted, the whole thing is to respectfully disagree. I respect and admire him for his P.O.W. experiences during the Vietnam war..still ready to serve his country, regardless of the hardships he endured.

Yes, last year the campaign was rough....mud slinging all around. Think of "liberal" Maria Kennedy Shriver married to "conservative" Arnold Schwarzenegger for over 20 years! There must be some fire in that household, indeed! . That is great from what I know from the fake tabloids of "California" marriages( I read the headlines as I shop for groceries , then I leave them on the rack) As a couple they had to do a re-do for "Uncle Ted" , preceded by Maria's mother Eunice Kennedy Shriver recently. Twice in a short span of time is emotionally draining for any family..rich, middle-class, or poor!

To all Christians; you believe in the Word of Jesus , right?
As He hung on the Cross ,He said
"Forgive them Father; for they know not what they do".
Luke23:34 KJV

I realize Ted Kennedy acted reprehensibly concerning Mary Jo Kopechne. I am not asking you to forgive Kennedy. However, I am asking you to be mindful of Jesus' last words on the Cross as a result of the actions of His enemies.
While you keep in mind these last words of Our Savior..ask
yourselves, concerning your UNFORGIVING HEARTS:

"What would Jesus do?" ..WWJD

I Pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

Some believe that "one Nation under Godis going to be eliminated from the Pledge
of Alligiance.

This link deals with the Supreme Court's most recent decision on this matter. The Court did not rule based on a technicality, however, indications are that based on the full merit of the case, "under God" would have been upheld.

Can White Americans REALLY judge what is racist and what is not?
Posted: 8/27/2009 1:55:34 AM
Granted this is a small start....ultimately I would to see everyone judged by the same standards. The laws are on the books, but are they being enforced? We have whites who feel that the system does not hear their pleas when they are victims at the hands of blacks and rightfully so.We have blacks who are racially profiled because they drive in "white" nieghborhoods.
Now all of these years I was under the stupid assumption that public roads and streets belong to.....We, the people.!!!

P.S. Why is it that missing blond /blue eyed children and young women seem to dominate the news ? How about white people with darker coloring, non-whites, males of all races and ages, and old people in general including minorities. Is it that the only missing people worth looking for are young blond,blue-eyed children and women? What's up with that?

celibacy in late life

burpie;
So..I am not clinical? Thank you. I do tend to over think now, instead of leaping headfirst although I experienced my "hippie"' period. No smoking cigarettes or other "smokes", plenty of liquor, however.
I came of age in the late 1960's , growing up I was blessed with very strict parents(deceased)
although at the time I thought I was born into Attica State Prison.
When I got away, first good job with a bank, I moved out at 22. I confess , I went somewhat wild, not to an extreme.. but wild. The 1970's were about "free love" and being with "the in crowd" all the while "doing my thing".
We move on to why I never married, most men(women too) want to reproduce. I always had fear when it comes to childbirth, most "potentials" wanted to have a family, no childbirth for me. Hence, you better believe I used plenty of "protection" in my "hippie" days. I look back now after 40 years and question"Who was that wild child?"

Love doesn't HAVE to be expressed physically, it's nice if it can be, but true love isn't manifested by a physical act. It can also be manifested by faith, trust, kindness, warmth, support and kindness...being there when the chips are down, being loyal, steadfast and true no matter what.

burpie;
You are absolutely correct. I do think of tender nights and warm hugs, when sex was not the issue, I believe there are more in my future. Perhaps, I am sabotaging my own happiness being, clinical and logical?
Thank you burpie a.k.a "Dr.Phil"?

We are in sync!! Your message # 140 is my message #138. The Buffalo News published my letter ( see link #1)
in Everybody's Column. I went public on this important issue, although to be published the newspaper verifies names by telephone.. So now everyone knows my name. I could had "copied/paste" deleting my name, but would that be authentic? Who would take me seriously?

I don't know if this is because I am at the big juncture of "50", sex just doesn't seem to matter all that much.

50?????.........I am nearly 62. You are a baby!!! Does it seem that in our "'mature years" we are up against the issues we had 30-40 years ago, but in a different way?? We likely do not have to think of pregnancy. How about all of the S.T.D's (condoms can rupture), including AIDS? These are the health issues, you have enumerated the social issues.

Now to the guys who may read this, I apologize from the start. Say I go out with a "potential", after a decent length of time of patting and feeling, we progress to the next level.
Now comes the "talk"... safe sex. No matter what he says, I do not believe that he has been celibate ,and waiting for me. I know that I am not Beyonce..get real!!
Then the others that are the poster boys for not taking Viagra..what a letdown.
Gear in action..flat tire!!!

Ted , you fought the good fight.Cancer is a monster. I started my second day in a row with the knowledge of someone who I admire succumbing to this dreadful disease. My best friend of 39 years passed away Tuesday and now you.
I will always hold you in high esteem. You made a major, terrible blunder in 1969.I am sure you've agonized deeply since the tragedy occurred concerning Mary Jo Kopechne. Have you asked God to forgive you? I believe you have and that God has forgiven you, after all our God is a forgiving God. It does not matter if large segments of society will never forgive you for God has the last word.
I pray that Our Savior will wrap His arms of comfort around your family and loved ones during this time. You will be missed. May God Bless you !!!

bigcp;

I give up on you. You say these so-called facts are in newspapers? Give me proof, post the relevant website links. Perry Stone's website that I posted devoted an entire page to the "Messiah". Sorry if I misinterpreted it as a slam on Obama!
You seem ready to believe anything such as the baloney I gave you about Obama.
Most people would have seen that for what it is...pure sarcasm. That is why I give up on you.
Why don't you question the people you hold in authority by researching them? I did this when I first took Obama seriously as a candidate for President. I even went so far as to check if he has a law license in the State of Illinois. He is licensed but it's status is inactive.
I guess he doesn't plan on practicing law for awhile....I wonder why?

So if this "change" he wants ends in communism you're all for that? If he indeed was born on foreign soil he shouldn't allowed to be president since I thought it was law that you had to be born in the us to be president. If he cared for this country like he says he does why doesn't put his hand on his heart during pledge? I had a friend who was in Iraq during elections Obama was over there and he told me when others approached him and tryed to talk to him he completely snubbed them and acted like they werent even there but yet he supports the troops. Obama wants to destroy us not help us but yet you want his "change" And do you know that in the bible it tells you vote and who ever you vote for if they do something that is not right in the eyes of God you're held accountable for what they do as well? Something you should think long and hard about

SoBigcp;
Although, I really voted for Obama, I don't regret it at all and I stand by him. As for all that boloney I fed you, I can't believe you ate every bite.lol!!! Can't you tell when someone is being sarcastic?

I have researched your statements, something that you should think about.
It's a good idea to get the facts before you accept them as true.
I did this homework for you because you are young and and I hate to see you so misled and confused. Who did your homework when you were a student ?

From Factcheck.org:
(From a discussion on chain letter e-mails)

"This is the one claiming that Obama didn’t put his hand over his heart while the Star Spangled Banner played. That specific allegation is correct, as documented in a photo of presidential candidates at an Iowa steak fry. But it’s false, as some versions of the e-mail said, that he "will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any reverence for our flag." We debunked this and other legends about Obama early this year after receiving a rush of questions about them. Again, for the record, he is not a Muslim, his middle name is not Mohammed, and he placed his hand on a Bible when he was sworn into the Senate. And he puts his hand over his heart when he says the Pledge of Allegiance. We even have pictures to prove it."

This Urban Legend "supposedly" happened on Obama's trip to Afghanistan, when he :'supposedly" snubbed the troops. I don't know abut your friend's story, seems suspect.

Perry Stone labels Obama "The Messiah".

Where is the the proof that Obama claims that he's "The Messiah?" If this true, how then is he also Muslim(according to some, not necessarily Perry Stone)

BTW...I voted for change when I voted for Obama and I am glad I did, this is why.

Well it does seem that he is different.

1.He is both a Christian (stayed with a raciest Christian church for 20 years)
and a Muslim( middle name Hussein). Did he bring his prayer cloth to church and pray to Mecca during services? Imagine that!!

2.He is the first foreign born President (born in Kenya according to the 'birthers')

3.He is a Nazi, Socialist,Marxist, and a Muslim terrorist. Not to mention a Chicago gangster.
Wow! He has been busy in his 48 years on Earth.

4. He will lead our nation down a rocky road. (Commander-in-Chief a.k.a President Bush.. Did you ever find those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, when our enemies, namely Osama Bin Laden, are in Afghanistan?)

What other President in history wore all of those hats? Indeed, Obama is quite remarkable!!!!

]then why is God being taken out of schools, government, and even talks of taking In God We Trust off of money? Obama says we are not a Christian nation but our constitution the he supposed to uphold was based with Christianity in mind, Obama wants to rewrite that same bill saying it's outdated(meaning he wants to make the way he wants it minus the Christian beliefs backing it). Here in Oklahoma a senator is going to pay out of his own pocket to put up a ten commandments monument on the capital grounds. But democrats are crying foul saying it's a conflict of interest and is saying that they're just Christian and they don't want it. Even some churches around are not even preaching the bible anymore they're just talkingbabout what's going in their life. I kid you not I saw it for myself a couple of weeks ago. I go to church to hear the good word not about a person buying a brand new house. But you say that God isn't being taking out of everything keep telling yourself that. And one more thing they might not be taking under God out of the pledge yet but with Obama putting this supreme court justices in office like sotomeyer in that could change very soon also and they will trying to make it under Obama instead of under God.

Wow!! Are you for real? What have you been smoking or drinking?
I love God s much as anyone else , however, give me the facts not something you learned from those crazy e-mails that are circulating.
Please document where God is being taken away by the Government.

Did you read my above post? Did I waste my time trying to enlighten you with facts

Some ministers are misleading their congregations with statements that are mostly emotional rather than factual. I make notes of the portions of the sermons that I feel uneasy about then question my pastor. He listens to facts and humbly retracts himself. Do you ever question your pastor?Does he make retractions for his mistakes? Or do you sit there to be led like one of herd of cattle going to slaughter unquestionably?

I know of a place that took God out of everything. It was called Soddam and Gommorah, and didn't it get wipe of the face map? They don't even know now where it was located. Not a spec of it left

Don't worry about "under God " being taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance. The Supreme Court dismissed the case on a technicality. Indications are that if they decided on the merit of the case the words "under God" would remain.
Remember the the U.S. Congress opens their sessions with prayer.
Inaugurations have an invocation and a benediction.
Presidents and other government officials take their oath of office with their hand on the Bible, also there are Bibles in every Court room.
I retired from the local County Office Building......Christmas trees... personal Bible reading during breaks....lunch hour Bible study groups..... Bible verses posted in employees private work areas. Yes, God lives in government buildings!! Anyone who denies us free expression of religion on our own time and in our private work areas , is breaking the law, period. Take them to court. If you do not want to acknowledge this by clinging on to your misguided beliefs..that's on you.
As for me , I deal with the facts.

So, tell me how is God being taken out of everything?
What planet do you live on?

I think we could take a vacation to Mars before these traditions would change!!

Two websites that you might helpful in getting the FACTS on our U.S. Government are "About.com"and "FactCheck.org".

snopes.com also dispels myths and urban legends
on many religious issues; especially the e-mail chain letters circulating, expressing that the government is taking away our religious freedoms.

TWO FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS
Posted: 8/24/2009 6:04:52 PM
As you probably know by now, Buffalo, New York endured the tragic loss of two firefighters overnight.

Please keep their loved ones in prayer.

http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/773342.html?imw=Y

Pearl, from the Buffalo News message board made an excellent point.

(Pearl)
I think this is tragic. I also think its a shame we only think of these men and women and the sacrifice they make daily when something like this happens. I hope we all remember this when their next request for a raise comes up. They should be paid more. Why are we all willing to pay high prices for Sabres and Bills tickets so those franchises can afford to pay athletes millions of dollars but some of us cringe at the idea of paying firefighters and police officers more. I am more wiling to pay higher taxes to pay these guys than to help the city, county or state subsidize sports teams who want new stadiums et al. I love sports and the bills and sabres but the job they do is not nearly as important or dangerous as the ones our firefighters and police officers do. I can honestly say most of us would not have what it in us to run into a burning buiding to look for a stranger. THESE ARE THE REAL HEROES OF OUR SOCIETY NOT THE PAT KANES, JIM KELLY'S, TERRELL OWENS, OR BRET FAVRES OF THE WORLD. those guys are good athletes but not heroes.

(blady)

Pearl;

You expressed my thoughts exactly. Our society has it's priorities misplaced.

WHEN THE DISTANCE SOMEONE THROWS A BALL.... TRUMPS THE DISTANCE SOMEONE GOES TO SAVE LIVES... SOCIETY'S PRIORITIES SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY EXAMINED.

Why isn't there a "FIRST RESPONDERS HALL OF FAME" on a national level?

OP;
I can understand this coming from a man but I rarely hear this from other women.
I, for one, only wear a watch that cost me about $ 40.00! I do not like "stuff" on my skin.
I used to wear jewelery , only to put it in my purse after a short time wearing it. My niece chose what she wanted from my "family jewels" (99% costume) and Idon't remember what happened to the rest..I'll have to check my jewelry case tucked away in my attic for over 20 years!!! It been longer since I wore any of it!!!

Can White Americans REALLY judge what is racist and what is not?
Posted: 8/24/2009 4:07:08 AM
This is a quote from my previous post to this thread.

The following story was published in the Buffalo News , today.

I wrote my comment following the article.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man, 18, severely beaten in possible hate crime
An 18-year-old man was severely beaten with a piece of concrete late Tuesday night, in an assault that's being investigated by Buffalo police as a possible hate crime.

The victim, who lives off Genesee Street at the eastern edge of the city, was listed in serous condition today in Erie County Medical Center, where he's being treated for a severe head injury.

"Police are looking into the possibility that it could be a hate crime, based on the information we have received," police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said, refusing to elaborate.

Witnesses told police that the young man, who is white, was beaten by a group of about 10 to 12 black males. Police are investigating the possibility that the beating may have resulted from a dispute involving a friend of the victim's.

Following the attack, which occurred at about 10:50 p.m. at Genesee Street and Floss Avenue, the victim managed to make his way to his nearby home.

Police fielded calls about a gang assault, and they followed the trail of blood to the man's home.

Detectives say they have been hindered in their investigation by the victim's reluctance to talk about the crime.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

blady's comment:

I am Black and I feel badly for the young man who was beaten and injured by this mob. I wish we lived a world of peace and love. For the most part, we do. It takes the evil people to spoil it for the rest of us. These same type of thugs may harm me also, and not because I am female, 61 years old, or for any number of reasons. Thugs like them are a menace to society and yes, they all should be charged under the Hate Crime Law. Everyone is subject to the same laws and should be charged accordingly !!!!

EVIL KNOWS NO COLOR!!REMEMBER THE HOLOCAUST!!!

This is an update : You may view the video at WGRZ.com

Pastor Pridgen of True Bethel Baptist Church spoke out to his congregation Sunday, Go to WGRZ.com

I made the following comment on the station's message board:

Way to Pastor Pridgen!!
We as Black people should hold our people accountable when they break the law. I have contacted Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton through their e-mail and also through the national media. These ministers should be made aware of this incident in Buffalo and also around the country.I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM TAKE A STAND FOR ALL "HATE CRIME VICTIMS" , no matter the race or color, for we are all God's children.I am praying for Brian, his girlfriend and their families.

At any rate the national media should report Black on White crime
in the same spirit as White on Black crime.

blady, how do you like the walk-in tub?

dynadaze ,
I love it. Independent Living, is the company I purchased my tub from. They asked me to write my testimony , therefore I submitted the following:

“Did you ever want to kiss yourself for making your life better? This is how I feel every time I use my bathtub's Jacuzzi (Hydro-Therapy) system! I feel as though I have won the lottery! When I sit in the bubbles churning all around me I feel like the Queen of the World. This swirling action makes all of my cares and stiffness go away. When I am done I am sixteen again.”

P.S. I also had a "Craftmatic" bed set up in my bedroom, which I also love.
This is definitely a "Geriatric Friendly" home !!

To those of you that are under the assumption that prayer is illegal in public schools. You are only partially correct. Students may voluntarily lead other students in prayer. Teacher led prayer is unconstitutional for good reason. Would you want your child led in prayer by someone not of your faith? Think about it.

I have hard Lake Erie water with no maintenance problems in five years, also I did not require an electrical "up grade". I would advise a potential purchaser to thoroughly research any major purchase .
Consumer Reports, for the equipment or appliance and the Better Business Bureau , for the place of purchase and installation contractor, are two places to start. This holds true for regular or tank less heaters or anything else that is a major purchase..do your homework first!!!!

I had a tank less installed in 2004 ,I love the idea that I have a continuous source of hot water.
The reason I purchased it was that I recently had a walk-in bathtub installed. These type of tubs require many gallons of water to fill . I was about to retire and in the process of making my home "geriatric friendly".

p.s The tank less are very expensive but worth it if it works in your budget. I have to double check my warranty, however my research tells me these usually last about 30 years.

Freedom of speech is a right.

The government cannot appear to be biased in favor of one religion over another--that's why there can be no Christmas decorations in City Hall, for example.

It has nothing to do with being 'offended', and everything to do with being a government of all people, by all people, and for all people.
'All' being the operative word.
Not just the Christians.
Not just the Jews.
Not just the atheists--or the Muslims, or the Hindus.

Get it?

@geeleebee;
That's a good post..however I like all of your posts. Keep up the good work of enlightening narrow minded individuals . We all have our personal religious preferences . We can even choose no religion at all. That is why we can attend worship services of our choosing or stay away from worship altogether.

Religion is like choosing a marriage partner, where one lives, or how one spends money.
Everyone has their own preferences on these personal matters, democracy is what our country was founded upon.

BTW---The county building I retired from had a huge Christmas tree in the main entrance every year, also the offices had trees displayed in the reception areas.
There were a few, not many, protests from non-Christians. Most would go along because Christmas is such a festive season. In many cases Christmas has taken on a more commercial tone rather than a religious one. That's why I do not understand why some Christian groups try to impose their beliefs on others. Don't they realize they are defeating their purpose when they use these harsh tactics to convert people to Jesus?
In many cases the non believers are turned off from becoming Christian when they experience these bold, forceful actions in the name of Jesus.
Being a Christian myself I know that kind words and deed would be far more persuasive in getting people to Christ.

Actually during the 1990's more White churches were burned, although there was a climate of racism involved concerning Black churches.

In Church Fires, a Pattern but No Conspiracy
By William Booth
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, June 19, 1996; Page A01

The people burning down black churches in the South are generally white, male and young, usually economically marginalized or poorly educated, frequently drunk or high on drugs, rarely affiliated with hate groups, but often deeply driven by racism, according to investigators and a review of those arrested or convicted in the burnings.

Little evidence has emerged to suggest a national or regional conspiracy, according to investigators. But they point to a climate of underlying racism that encourages the arsonists to strike at African American churches.

The foyers of public buildings will get pretty crowded I guess with mini-shrines to Vishnu, giant golden Buddha's, conga lines of chanting Hari Krishna's, wailing Jews, whirling Dervishes, Catholics muttering Hail Mary's at the foot of authentic cross replica's sipping wine, eating crackers, and trying to avoid inhaling the thick clouds of cow dung incense billowing out from the Hindu corner... which would make it hard to see the Muslims on the floor?
How long before a fight broke out hey? Perhaps after a Christian trips over a Muslim in the fog and ends up full length on the floor, unintentionally genuflecting in the direction of Mecca?

I agree this is brilliant, indeed.

The below E-mail is currently going around. Of course, I felt compelled to add my rebuttal.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE LAW IS THE LAW

So " if " the US government determines that it is against the
law for the words "under God" to be on our money,( note:"under god " is not on our
s/b" In God We Trust!!" blady)

then so be it.

And " if " that same government decides that the
"Ten Commandments"
are not to be used in or on a
government installation, then,
so be it.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a
law abiding US citizen.
I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that
smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.
I would like to think that those people have the
American public's best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?

Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings , I don't believe the Government and its
employees should participate in the
Easter and Christmas
celebrations which honor the God
that our government
is eliminating from many facets of American life.
I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Eas ter. After all, it's just another day.
I'd like the " US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as
well as Sundays." After all, it's just another day.
I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives
to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just another day.
I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would
work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other
day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct."
In fact....

I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God...) because, after all, our government says that

it should be just another day....
What do you all think????
If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected
officials will stop giving in to the "minority opinions"
and begin, once again, to represent the "majority"
of ALL of the American people.
SO BE IT............

Please Dear Lord,
Give us the help needed to keep you in our country!
'Amen' and 'Amen'
Touche!

These are definitely things I never thought about but
from now on, I will be sure to question those in
government who support these changes.
At the top, it says "I hope this makes its way around
the USA several times over!!!!!"
Let's see that it does.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blady's comments:

In reference to the subject of this e-mail:

I have been to many churches, whereby if the Ten Commandments were posted, they were not placed in a prominent area such as the main entrance!!! Do Christians want their taxes to increase to pay extra government workers for 365 days a year? I don't think so. There are laws that say more than 40 hours per week is overtime. I know that I was paid for overtime!!. Other than that, more employees will have to be hired to fill in the gaps!! Either way, higher taxes for all!!

The IRS allows tax breaks for religious freedom by permitting exemptions for property and sales taxes for religious institutions, also tithes and offerings are tax deductible. This is in the tradition of"separation of church and state". Would Christians be ready to give up these tax breaks in order to express their beliefs concerning government buildings? I know I would not!!

Another thing to consider. Every United States citizen ,regardless of religion such as Jewish, Muslim ,Buddhist, Hindu pays taxes. Perhaps they should also be allowed to place symbols of their religions on government buildings? Hmnn....

All I know is that I thank God everyday that I can carry a Bible or wear a cross or say a prayer in public without being executed. It is a blessing to be born in America. There are many countries where you die on the spot for being openly Christian!! In this country all people have religious freedom or even the freedom to be Atheists if they want to be!! So to all my fellow Christians be thankful , do not worry about what symbols are on government buildings. It's the love you have for Jesus in your heart that is important. Show His love to everyone you meet through your actions. That will be far more meaningful than what symbols are placed on or in government buildings.

What if the government required all religious institutions to post the U.S. Constitution on their sacred grounds? Then we would no longer have religious freedom.

God Bless,

Signed,
A retired civil service employee who loves Jesus!

P.S. Do people know the the United States Congress opens their sessions with prayer?

Also I prayed whenever I wanted to in the County Office Building, where I retired from. The was even a Bible Study group who met during lunch hour. Our children are free to pray in public school on their own, but not led in prayer by teachers . This is because a teacher might be of a different faith from the way you want your child to follow.

Stop manufacturing paper money and coins. Use the barter system , raise livestock to pay your bills.
Down with the F.B.I, C.I.A. , and all government run prisons. When there is no more space in the privately run prisons..let the criminals run free!!!

Abolish the military....no enemies would dare attack a "free enterprise" nation!!!

I do not necessarily look at society as a" melting pot" but rather a salad where each ingredient (lettuce, tomato, onion etc.) is mixed together but keeps it's individuality to make something delectable to eat.

In Buffalo, N.Y. ,we take advantage of our short spring/summer season with ethnic festivals from late May to early September. We have the Juneteenth Festival celebrated by Blacks, however all are welcome!! See history: http://www.juneteenth.com/history.

There are Italian, Greek, Polish, German, Irish,Scottish, Lebanese, Puerto Rican and Caribbean Festivals every year among others. I have attended some of these and plan to broaden my horizons. I also love the St. Patrick's Day parade!!! Every culture has interesting food , music, and history. What a boring world this would be if everyone were of the same heritage!!!

This whole topic of racism really urks my nerves. This is America. A melting pot. Everyone needs to just get along and stuff should be fair. Its more of an issue of things not being fair and the double standard that gets to me, not racism. Just like how some things are acceptable for men to do , but women must behave in an acceptable manner. Another example is BET(Black Entertainment Television). If white people were to get a television show strictly for whites, i'm sure we would be called racist.

^^^^^ Many Blacks in America look 'White" ex: Mariah Cary. in bygone days many Blacks "passed" for White because of their fair skin, to gain access to opportunities that were denied to their darker skinned people. Today many American Whites are not aware they have black genes, because the "family secrets" died with their ancestors.

I remember a book concerning this subject. I will have to research title/author.

The following study was conducted by the PEW RESEARCH CENTER. In 1960 Whites were the majority population. Granted , Whites will be the LARGEST MINORITY but a minority of the total population just the same. This means that EVERYONE will be a member of a minority group by 2050!

This is a direct quote regarding the projected "White minority" status by the year 2050.
"Whites who are not Hispanic, now two-thirds of the population, will become a minority when their
share drops to 47%. They made up 85% of the population in 1960."

By the mid-century mark, when the United States is projected to have a population of 439 million people, 54 percent of the population will consist of racial minorities.

Which means that Whites will balance out at 46% of the total population.

I don't know about any one else but I would rather receive a 54% discount over a 46% discount on my purchases any day!!! No matter how you spin it, 54% is greater than 46%!!!

Hey I just thought of something else...native Americans. I mean it just seems a little odd, African-American subculture is right out there, in your face, all over Hollywood and now Pres, but native Americans seem just kinda hidden away on reservations and in gutters...Doesn't that seem weird? Do you think native Americans wish they were black?

I wouldn't know. You have to ask a Native American.
That's like asking a poodle if he thinks c-o-c-k-e-r spaniels wish they were poodles.

You say that you do not want our country to become socialized? I made this list to point out that are laws that have been on the books for many, many years from birth to death.
You think that your privacy is threatened? Your life is already and open book from birth to death!!

1)Birth certificates, registered into your state's vital statistics records.
2) Infants must have required immunizations.
3)Child must be registered for school ,public or private (must pay tuition). Parents must show proof of immunizations. I don't know the requirements for home schooled students.
4) Public schools k-12. Socialized?
5) Driver's licenses, vehicle insurance, registration and inspection as required by your state.
6) Social Security card required for employment other than "off the books". Don't forget to file your Federal and State taxes.
7)State run Universities& Colleges (lower tuition and fees than private schools)
8) Marriage licenses and certificates registered into your state's vital statics records.
10) Real Estate. Deeds and mortgages registered into your county and or state system. You must pay your property taxes
11)Daily living... purchase of goods and services means you pay sales tax as required by your local laws.
12)Retirement pensions are regulated by the government in many, not all, cases. Social Security and Medicare are socialized programs. Stock market investments are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The jury is still out on the quality of oversight.
13) Death..Burial, entombment, cremation laws. Death certificate filed with your state Department of Vital Statistics.
Hello people , should we cease participating living our daily lives in America ? Seems to me we are already socialized to a great extent.

I am mindful of some who fear" government takeover" of our lives and I respect your opinions. I, for one, have no problem with a public option as a choice, not a mandate, for health insurance. I really do not see where this would lead to a takeover of private insurance companies.
The US post office system is losing business while privately owned UPS and Federal Express are functioning quite well. Seems like the" socialized" Post Office has not taken over these free market enterprises. That is why I do not see public option health care overtaking the "free enterprise" health insurance business. Paying for this is a concern of mine . However, the choice of a public option works for me.

Let's respectfully agree to disagree. OK? followed by

Thanks ,Serendipitee for reminding me of Tim Wise. I read some his writings 2 or 3 years ago. Now, I must read his recent material.

I especially liked "ON White Pride and Other Delusions": http://www.lipmagazine.org/~timwise/whitepride.html

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Tim Wise...he is a white man!!! He is not a black man playing the" race" card.

Please read the following excerpt, for the entire text.... please go to the above link.

White Pride and Other Delusions:

Reflections on the Rage of the Uninformed

By Tim Wise

May 23, 2007

"The price the white American paid for his ticket was to become white...This incredibly limited, not to say dimwitted ambition has choked many a human being to death here: and this, I contend, is because the white American has never accepted the real reasons for his journey. I know very well that my ancestors had no desire to come to this place: but neither did the ancestors of the people who became white and who require of my captivity a song. They require of me a song less to celebrate my captivity than to justify their own."

James Baldwin, "The Price of the Ticket," 1985

It seems like every week I get an e-mail from someone demanding to know why there's no White History Month, or White Entertainment Television, or why whites aren't allowed to have organizations to defend "our" interests, the way people of color are, without being thought of as racists. One of these internet missives, which has been making the rounds lately on MySpace and other popular networking sites, implies that whites are somehow oppressed because we can't get away with calling people of color any number of racial slurs (a litany of which the author then proceeds to recite, almost gleefully), while persons of color presumably call us names like "cracker," "honky," or "hillbilly" all the time.

The e-mail goes on to express anger over, among other things, Martin Luther King Jr. day, and Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance day in Israel), as if these were holidays that discriminated against whites. It then laments that white pride is seen as racist, but for people of color to feel and show pride in their group is seen as normal, natural, and even healthy.

The Reverse Racism Ruse (Or How to Ignore Power, History and Logic)

That so many people find this kind of argumentation persuasive would be humorous were it not so dangerous, and so indicative of the way in which our nation has yet to come to grips with its racist history. Had we honestly confronted racism as an issue, past and present, it is unlikely that such positions would make sense to anyone. After all, every month has been white history month, even if they weren't called that. White history has been made the normative history, the default position, and when your narrative is taken as the norm--indeed, when it gets to be viewed as synonymous with American history--the need to racially designate its origins is obviously a less pressing concern. White folks' contributions have never been ignored, diminished or overlooked. As such, to now demand special time to teach about the people we've already learned about from the start seems a bit preposterous.

Obama's Health Reform Plan is a proposal , it is not a final bill, it is not written in stone.
There will be further tweaking in Congress before a final bill is submitted. Ideally, I hope to see a bi-partisan bill submitted to the President for signature. This going to take some concessions from "both sides of the aisle".
The signed bill( if it gets that far) will then take until 2013 for full implementation.

Therefore everyone, do not panic, Health Care Reform does not mean that changes are going to take place tomorrow!!!

There are many false statements and misconceptions about Obama's plan.
I would advise you to check with FactCheck.com . This website researches FACTS AND MYTHS on OBAMA'S HEALTH CARE PLAN.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/seven-falsehoods-about-health-care/

Future falsehoods and myths surely will happen. That is why we all should regularly check the website to keep ourselves current on this. Isn't better to base our opinions on fact rather than falsehoods?

Personally, I think everybody in this country has a grass-is-greener complex. Black people think how awesome it must be to be white. White people think how many handouts they'd get if they were black. Everybody's so focused on how good they think everybody else has it that nobody bothers to appreciate or enjoy what they do have.

I would not say that it would be "awesome" to be white. I must admit however I have wondered how it would affect my acceptance into society, the color of one's skin alone should not affect one's status but we all know better. Awesome is too strong of a word, a word that I would use for mathematicians, scientists and doctors of all races who have made great contributions to mankind.
As for handouts to blacks, the black people that I associate with work hard for everything they have received. I retired from our local county office building, the first thing in the morning there would be many whites lined up waiting to see a welfare case worker along with blacks and other races.
You are right about the stereotypes and misconceptions that we all harbor. Healthy debates like this leads to greater understanding and appreciation of one another. Ideally, there will be a day that all of the grass will be one shade of green.

BCR = Black College Reunion (hosted in Daytona Beach)
BET = Black Entertainment Television (cable network based out of D.C.)
NAACP = National Association for Advancement of Colored People
Black History Month= Federally recognized by the U.S. government
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority - Xi Beta Chapter = Stanford University (female sorrity)
BIG = Blacks in Government, designed to help civil servants who are "People of Color" (my term)
National Association of Black Journalists = Self explanatory
NBS = National Brotherhood of Skiers
OBAP = Organization of Black Airline Pilots

In the few organizations listed above, if I replaced "Black/Color/Colored" with "white" would you call me a racist? I can't think of any "white" associated organization, expect a few leftist ones, that completely disgusts me. Since this is a "dating site" I will say that I have dated 3 "women of color" over my entire dating career since high school. It was because of what they are... "a person" who I was interested in and not the color of their skin.

@1spacecase
I have heard this discussion for many years.Have you thought about the fact that mainstream(white) America founded 99% of all the institutions and business's in our country?. To attach the label "white" to them would be redundant. We would have "white" NBC,"white"Knights of Columbus, "white" Ivy League schools;etc.
We do have white organizations but they are titled under European-American names;
Irish-,Scottish-,Italian-, German-, etc.American. It would be a blessing if blacks knew what country in Africa our roots were established. We then would have Nigerian-, Ghanaian-Kenyan-etc .American organizations like the various European -American groups!!!
BTW ..I have both German and Irish ancestors..could I apply for a German-,or Irish -American scholarship? These scholarships do exist:

http://www.multiculturaladvantage.com/opportunity/scholarships/diversity/ehtnic-white-scholarships.asp

If you have any African blood in your veins , perhaps a deal could be made for you or a relative to participate in the United Negro Scholarship Fund!!

Jim Crow laws dictated 'white' and 'colored' establishments. Blacks were forced to establish groups, organizations and institutions to meet our needs. We keep these 'black' titles to remember the struggles that our ancestors went through to bring us to where we are now.

Thank goodness those days are over. People of all colors can attend any college. We have a black President who graduated from "white" Harvard. We have Joshua Packwood, the first white valedictorian, class of 2008, in Morehouse University's, 141 year old black male history. White people and all races are welcomed into the N.A.A.C.P.. Viacom , a white owned broadcasting conglomerate owns Black Entertainment Television a.k.a B.E.T.

Try to see black oriented media as geared to a "special interest"population , such as Field and Stream targets hunters and fishers. Would you really want the mainstream media using even more space to cover in-depth material of concern to blacks?

To sum up when the weather reporter predicts snow, (s)he does not have to say "white" snow. What if by some quirk of nature we were to see "blue" " snow? The weather reporters would say "We are expecting "blue" snow overnight".

When I visited Hawaii the guide made sure we saw 'black' sand because it could only be found in certain areas. After all, 'beige' sand was seen everywhere in abundance!!

In other words when distinguishing members of American society, it's pretty much a given that it is white people that are the subject of the conversation unless some distinction is made. This is because white people make up the majority of the citizenship of our wonderful diverse country.

When they say black power, they are a leader, when they say brown power, they are an activist, when I say white power, I am a racist!! SCREW THAT. Lets make ONE BIG POINT ABOUT SLAVERY! The Africans SOLD THEIR OWN PEOPLE, we just bought them. AND there are NO slaves left alive. I am sick of saying im sorry, to people who werent even involved. That was the past, let it remain there, instead of crying and playing the race card.

@joeinchicago1970

1) "white power"?
I would not deem a white person as racist for saying this. I would say that it is a unnecessary and silly statement because whites founded this country and also established the original industries and institutions that have kept our country going.
Because whites own most of America they already have "white power".
2) Yes, Africans sold their own people .
Did you stop to think that to sell anything there must be buyers?
Why did the Europeans buy slaves? My answer is they needed the cheapest labor, being slave labor to build this country. Cotton was King at one time. I wonder why they needed Africans. Why couldn't the Europeans pick their own cotton and build their own buildings without slave labor?..
Did you know that many slaves contributed to the building of the White House and also the Capitol building?

http://www.geocities.com/bobarnebeck/slaves.html

3) You are right about some blacks overplaying the race card. However, in many instances the race card is warranted I could write a book of my own experiences. If you woke up tomorrow, looked in the mirror and saw a yourself with black skin; after the initial shock, would you think that you took a step up, or down or remained the same in your position in society? Honest answer ,please!!
To be honest with you, although I am a proud black woman, I believe that "blond hair and blue eyes" would gain me greater acceptance in society than my present physical characteristics., because it seems that these features are on the "A" list. However, I would not change my black eyes and black hair. .. before it turned gray … for anything
because I love myself as I am. I don't care if society does not!!!

I often reflect on an incident when I was in the sixth grade. At that time we had "teacher led"
Christian prayers everyday in public school in those days other religions were a rarity among staff and students. There was one girl who was a Jehovah's Witness. On the last day of school before Christmas recess a group of us followed her for about two blocks to her home. We were teasing and harrassing her for not celebrating Christmas and the birth of baby Jesus. Being the children that we were we also could not understand why her family did not exchange Christmas gifts, after all that is the best part of Christmas when you are a child!!

As I grew older I have felt guilty for taking part with the other kids in taunting her because she was a very nice person in spite of our childish antics. I only wish I could say that all adults have outgrown the silly things they did as children.

taking God out of School/Government..good/bad?
Posted: 8/14/2009 9:24:29 PM
Do any of you ever receive chain e-mails that harp on the subject that our religious freedoms are being taken away? You are suppose to send this information to others to keep the chain from being broken . Well I have read a number of these and found that each one has had misinformation, therefore I suppose I broke "the chain" because I did not forward the e-mails. It seems that there is an element out there that is trying to scare Christians into believing that soon there will be no religious freedom left.
If you have received these types of e-mails, please respond with your opinions.

Can a White person be African American?
Posted: 8/13/2009 9:33:55 AM

The crux of the original question is that not all Africans are Black. There are White Africans. Therefore, any white Africans that immigrate to the United States would thus be African Americans.

To use the label of African American solely to refer to Black people of African origin would appear to be a racist application of the term.

I absolutely agree!!

Now try this on for a little fun. Remember Sen. John Kerry who lost to George W.Bush in2004? His wife ,Teresa was born in Africa (Bio below) . I would consider her African- American, however I wonder if she considers herself African American.
Perhaps she considers herself as Portuguese-American.
This whole thing can get complicated with the many variables that the citizens of America are comprised of; racial, ethnicity, place of birth, parents place of birth etc.
