Ft Hood Incident Highlights Dangers of Gun Control

show me a country with strict gun control laws that is similar to America in population and diversity.....that has lower incidents of Gun violence...then that may mean something...
That's ridiculous. You might as well say - "... show me a country with strict gun control laws that was founded in 1776, is between Canda and Mexico,......"
As one poster pointed out, the murder rates being discussed are pro-rated. In addition, Canada (and many other countries) have very diverse populations too - and if If you're trying to somehow link population to murder rate, then a fairer way to do it would be to compare population density rates. Many of the countries that have lower murder rates have far greater population density rates.
My thoughts are that there are a few things that link together to cause the U.S. murder rate.
1) The ease of getting guns,
2) the fact that the U.S. is a me-take-care-of-me society, that stresses personal gain as success, combined with the fact that it doesn't have the social safety nets that other countries have. Thus many people are left feeling that they are on their own in a situation where the cards are stacked against them - everyone else is taking care of themselves and getting a piece of the pie - I want a piece too.

Firearms are used in self defense in the US over 2 million times a year and firearms save 50-75 lives for every life taken with a firearm.
If that's the case, then let's give a gun to every baby that's born. Soon will be saving so many people that no one will be getting killed guns. Problem solved!!
But again, I ask the question - how come the murder rate is so much lower in countries that have gun control than in the U.S. that doesn't have gun control?

This situation has nothing to do with the effectiveness of gun control.
But the OPs view is that
Ft Hood Incident Highlights Dangers of Gun Control ........ If someone had a firearm, to use in self defense, I have no doubt the gun man would have been disabled early on. What do you think?
So the thread is about gun control and not about how tragic the situation at Fort Hood is. That goes without saying. Ergo my posting in Msg 5

It's funny how people who are against gun control always seem to find the most outlandish situations to justify owning guns, yet they ignore the fact that in ALL western countries that have gun control, the murder rate is far lower than in the one western country that doesn't have gun control (the U.S.).
Here in Montreal (population almost 3 million) we had about 4o murders last year. Sometimes it goes up to 60 murders a year, but never into the several hundreds that similar sized cities in the U.S. have. But go ahead, let every one have a gun (or maybe 2 or 3). In fact it's almost Christmas - buy someone a gun for Christmas (and don't forget the ammo)!!! Because we all know "guns don't kill people, people kill people, and monkeys do too (if they have a gun).”

I read a note on a bottle of Viagra that says that in case an erection lasts more than 4 hours, seek medical help. So what I used to do was take Viagra,go to the hospital after a half an hour and tell them I had an erection for over 4 hours. Upon which time they would immediately get two nurses to work on me - Cheapest sex I ever had - no charge here in Canada - I love socialized medicine -

14 years ago I had a massive heart attack. I was in intensive care at a hospital for more than a week, and then was transferred by ambulance to a special heart institute for another week where I had all kinds of tests done on me.
I also had the services of a dietician when I got out. A month or two later, I had an angiogram and angioplasty done on me. After that I was followed up every month or so by a heart specialist for who knows how long. And for the past umpteen years I’ve seen a heart specialized every 6 months (or more if needed) and had various tests done every few years.
A few weeks ago I had a bad angina attack – called my doctor and he saw me in no time. Had an angiogram about a week later, where it was determined that I needed a triple bypass. Met with the hospital staff last Wednesday for pre-op tests and will be going in tomorrow for surgery on the following day. After that I’ll remain in the hospital for about 5 days.
When I get home, I’ll have someone come over daily to help me take a shower (I hope she’s pretty - lol) and change my dressing etc,
All this and I haven’t had to pay a penny. Just curious, how much would this have cost in the U.S.
Oh yes, one more thing. When I was working and had Medical insurance, the insurance covered my medication. But now that I am not working I have mandatory medical insurance through the government (costs based on income – but there’s a cap) and I’ve only had to pay about $50/month (in addition to my premiums) for the various medications I’ve been taking over the last 14+ years.
Well the operation went very well. I'm home for the weekend. I was supposed to come home last Monday, but the hospital where the operation was done thought it better that I go to a convalescent hospital for physiotherapy etc. and given that my GF was working it would mean there was someone to take care of me full time during the week.
So I was there Monday through Friday, when I came home to be with family etc. I'll be going back tonight for more physiotherapy. Things are looking good so I hope to be home permanently in a short while.
Did I mention that the transport between hospitals, medication, physiotherapy, meals, medical attention (Doctor/Nursing) cost me NOTHING.
Oh yes - but I did have to pay a $5 installation fee and $1.50 a day for bedside telephone service.

You're very lucky to live in a country that puts people over profits.
You touched on an interesting topic. The old saying is " The measure of a civilized society is how well it treats its most vulnerable citizens".
Unlike the other western nations, the US is more of a "me take care of me" society. I believe that this is one of the main reasons that they have such a high crime rate compared to these other countries - all of which have a more caring social structure.

now clearly, a lot of people with religious backgrounds or creeds believe the only permissible circumstance for sex is heterosexual wedlock. this is what their dogma tells them.
You omitted "also permitted is unmarried sex between a consenting priest and a non-consenting minor of the same sex."

I told her to ignore him, he'll be finished in a minute.
She said "I can't. He's using my hand"

OP I can't understand why you need a bunch of SUBJECTIVE opinions from people with all kinds of their own baggage. If you enjoyed making her happy, then that's all there is to it.
The grumpy opinions of a bunch of vanilla people is just that - THE OPINION OF A BUNCH OF GRUMPY VANILLA PEOPLE.
Like religion, there is always someone trying to tell someone else what is right and what is wrong. All you did was fulfill someones fantasy (for what ever reason it turned her on) - Nevermind what others would have done or not done - YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG!! Stop trying to over- analyze it.

A male whale and a female whale were swimming off the coast of Japan when they noticed a whaling ship. The male whale recognized it as the same ship that had harpooned his father many years earlier. He said to the female whale, "Lets both swim under the ship and blow out of our air holes at the same time and it should cause the ship to turn over and sink. They tried it and sure enough, the ship turned over and quickly sank.
Soon however, the whales realized the sailors had jumped overboard and were swimming to the safety of shore. The male was enraged that they were going to get away and told the female "let’s swim after them and gobble them up before they reach the shore." At this point, he realized the female was becoming reluctant to follow him. "Look", she said, "I went along with the blow job, but I absolutely refuse to swallow the seamen."

Palin resigns! Do you think she will run for President!
Posted:
7/4/2009 8:59:44 PM
Palin got crusified. Her family was attacked more than she was. They knew her soft spot and went after it. I mean I used to live in a Fashcist libeal state and they loved to compare Palin to a transexual. I mean she was the joke of the day. This was all done because the libtard fashists were scared of her. When you have that much fire coming down on you, you know you struck a nerve with the liberals. The Democrates want to be the party that brings a woman into office. If a woman got elected into high office of that nature, it would go aginst the DNC being a party of progress and rightfully prove that the GOP is a party of progress as well.
But the libtard fashist media would have none of that and intesnified the attacks and made it look like she was a problem waiting to happen. All the ethics claims she was accused of she fought off and won. No scandal is rocking her. She was an exsample of a true Republican, one who isnt even afraid to go aginst her own party and break up clubs like she did in Alaska.
I doubt she will run for higher office. IF she did, she would get destroyed by the spoon fed media that everyone belives without doing their own research.
That's even funnier than David Letterman

Right wing radio host gets waterboarded for 7 seconds. Admits it is torture
Posted:

This is a great way to settle the debate whether waterboarding is torture or not. Get all the Bush administration people who think it's not toture to try it - starting with Cheney - and then let them give their opinions.
Hmmmm, I wonder if it's legal to torture someone into confessing it's torture?
I just can't help but ask myself if the Bush administration thought that it was not torture, why did they believe that it would induce people who weren't talking to suddenly talk?

But I'm still married!
Posted:
4/9/2009 8:07:58 AM
OP. So what did you achieve? You were happy with her. She was happy with you. Both of you were not looking elswhere or pining for someone else. Had you not broken up with her, you may have had many years of happiness with her instead of being on a singles site.
True she may never have gotten a divorce, but she had moved on. Who knows why she didn't get it. Maybe she thought the piece of paper she would have gotten was just that - "a piece of paper" . She could have just been a progressive thinker and didn't need the shallowness of a piece of paper to confirm that she is no longer with the other person.
The sanctity of marriage or divorce is not in the piece of paper you get, it's in the integrity of the two people involved. If the two of you had integrity, trust and love did you really need someoneelses OK ( a piece of paper) to confirm your relationship?
What ever her reasons, you may have given up something really nice. Something that doesn't come around that often. For what - a piece of paper?

How to fix the economy
Posted:
3/30/2009 10:23:37 AM
I received this from one of my American friends .... he figured out how to fix the economy ..... :)
Dear Mr. President,
Patriotic retirement:
There's about 40 million people over 50 in the work force - pay them $1
million apiece severance with the following stipulations:
1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.
2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.
3) They either buy a house/pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.
Can't get any easier than that!

Sleeping with your hand on partner's privates (or vice versa)

I love cuddling when falling asleep. Unfortunately my GF is one of those people that doesn't like to be touched when going to sleep (no problem though when she's not trying to fall asleep or any other time of the day - ). Oh well, I love her anyways, so I guess I'll keep her
From past experience with another SO, I don't recommend a couple fall asleep with his penis in her mouth. Did that once and woke up in agony with a sharp pang when she bit down at 3;00 in the morning. Have no idea what she was dreaming about - but can still remember the shock and the pain.

This has to be a Troll post.
Who else would advertize that they are an immature person who can't keep their word to all the people on POF? Good luck in trying to get someone in the sack from here.
I just can't figure out why your ex would leave such a wonderful catch - LOL

One night stand...any chance he'll call?

There is no one answer. Everyone is different and every "one night stand" is different. From my experience it usually based on how I felt about the woman before sleeping with her.
The term "one night stand" conjures up the negative picture of a one night quickie with no follow-up. But if you take a more possitive perspective, your romantic night may have been just that - a romantic night between two people who may have a had a spark between them that just needs a little kindling.
There are MANY strong relationships that started off with sex on the first date (They were adults, had that instant chemistry and it felt right). I don't go for that "you took the challenge out of it" comment. Most likely those realtionships wouldn't have lasted even if ther couple hadd waited. If you think of the other person as a conquest that doesn't say much about what was there to start off with.
Think positive. You both were attracted to each other and showed it.
I'd vote for calling him. If he's like me, that little indication that you're interested may be just what he needs. If it doesn't work, it won't have done any damage - - either he wasn't really interested from the start; or, if it turns him off (as some may claim), he doesn't have your sensitivety and wasn't for you anyway.

Sex over 50

Are we talking age or IQ? I think you'd be hardpressed to find anyone with an IQ of 50+ on this site. Sorry, couldn't resist -
As for me and my partner (IQs both under 50) - it's not the ALL NIGHTER of our youth and sometimes there are ED problems - But it's so loving, so caring..... and there are always alternatives. (My tongue can bench press 100 lbs now).
But sex doesn't start or finish in bed. An absolute must for any good sexual relationship is the out of bed sexual tension. The ever-present touching/teasing, kissing and thoughtfulness that we have in our relationship makes each of us irresistible to the other when we do get to bed.
