What is Art??
Posted: 11/26/2009 4:25:42 AM
I agree with most people here, some of this "conceptial art" eg Tracy Emin etc is a load of rubbish.

Personally I can only be impressed with a piece of art if I can see that it has taken skill to create.

I know several artists who get next to nothing for their work, which does take a lot of skill so it seems pretty unfair that certain individuals are absolutely raking it in for doing something that anyone could do.

Blair loses out in European Presidency

It is possible that my analysis of the facts can be flawed, but it is up to others to demonstrate why.

In all these years, not one poster has been able to do this.

In other words you refuse to see any other point of view other than your own!

As for the cost of the EU to Britain, we are a net contributor. About a million websites will back this up, but here's a site using the ONS figures:

Without getting into this again - yes, we are a net contributer in terms of payments in and payments out. The debate I was referring to was the one on overall net benefit i.e. including the value of jobs and investment, for which there are no facts and figures, just opinions.

I'll concede, it appears they were forced into a re-run - but the second part of my statement still stands. Why did the Irish people vote overwhelmingly in favour the second time?

If it helps, every comment I make about the EU is made after I have checked the facts.

apart from those comments which are your opinion NOT fact

such as your belief that the EU is a net cost to Britain.

Murdoch already does have a big influence

His papers already influence peoples political views, the Sun's anti-EU stance for example is pure political propaganda

The fact is that the EU told Ireland that it must ratify each treaty it is presented with. Three times Ireland has rejected a treaty, and three times it has had to hold a re-run.

No-one forced Ireland to hold a re-run and no-one forced the Irish people to change their mind.

Almost everyone seems to dislike this woman.

Yet how many people here watch TV shows featuring her? buy the Sun or other tabloids? buy gossip magazines?

Any anger at our stupid celebrity culture should be directed at those who buy/watch her stuff, not those who are making money from the publics gullibility.

What the eurosceptics seem to conveniently overlook is that the UK is as much a part of making those laws as any other EU country and talks about it as if the EU was a "bunch of foreigners making laws for us". Some of the more crazy eurosceptics even liken it to the USSR (where it was one country ruling over others who had no say in it)

As a highly influentual larger member of the EU, the UK can and does opt out of laws it doesn't want.

The current UK government have used the EU as an excuse to absolve themselves of blame for certain legislation, but the reality is that we don't need to implement all EU laws and a UK government that doesn't want a particular law will simply opt out of it or get it changed.

I think the men are really a bit cheeky in being so rude about her - if people (and by people I mean mainly men) didn't buy the newspapers and magazines that employed her she wouldn't have been successful. She certainly didn't have the boob jobs to appeal to women, it was to get the pennies out of men's pockets - and she succeeded.

Obviously in her early days, Jordan appealed to men - but I am not convinced that is her target market now.

I don't find her attractive and I can't think of anyone I know who does, she is rarely featured in mens magazines these days.

She is making her money now from TV shows and books, which I would suggest are being watched/read more by women.

You can get an automatic 350Z

My point is that to control a powerful sports car you need a certain degree of coordination and understanding of car control. If you can't get to grips with a manual gearbox, I simply don't think you are likely to have the ability to drive such a car properly.

Just another national embarrasment.

I don't think she is the national embarassment at all.

The national embarassment is that people (a lot of people!) buy tabloid newspapers to read about her, watch her TV shows and even buy her books!

The papers and TV shows I can almost understand but what kind of person actually buys one of her books?!

When (or if) your partner has had more lovers than you?
Posted: 11/23/2009 2:17:20 AM
Like most people I would be concerned if a partner had been with a very high number of others; however, I have never considered where the limit of acceptable/unacceptable is and don't think you could ever define it.

Really don't see the point in asking

as Pud says with the "rule of 3" a number that is high enough to cause concern will be reduced anyway, so why even bother going there?

Barack Obama got to be president of 300 million Americans after an exhaustive, and exhausting, series of primaries and ballots lasting over a year. By the end of that campaign, Americans knew exactly what they were getting. The man who will be president of 500 million Europeans by contrast was selected at a cosy private dinner in Brussels.

Theres a big difference though, actually not big - absolutely huuuuge!

They might both be called presidents, but thats where the similarity ends.

We didn't elect the Queen either and she has a lot more power over us than Mr van Rumpy Pumpy or whatever his name is

Blair never had a chance after following Bush into Iraq.

A low profile person is the right thing in my opinion for a position which contrary to what the hysterical anti-EU brigade say is really only an adminsitrative role.

As graffiti says, its time to put an end to the ridiculous notion that the EU is becoming a superstate

Women get A LOT of messages, the good looking ones get too many to even look at them all.

That is a lot of competition, she might have simply had so many messages to reply to she couldn't keep up and forgot about yours.

It really isn't worth analysing too much.

Regards climate change, is the phrase save the planet misleading?
Posted: 11/17/2009 4:02:54 AM
Its a tricky one...

I think the truth lies somewhere between the extreme views of the climate-change deniers and those talking of imminent catastrophe

What I do think is that the whole "global warming" and "climate change" buzzwords are not helping the situation, because they lead to things like biofuels which do more harm than good.

The most important environmental issue is the loss of habitats, particularly rainforests. We should be focussing on saving them rather than pretending everything is about reducing carbon emissions.

Fair enough, technology has moved on and some sports cars have these new semi-automatic systems

However, I would still suggest that if you have any interest in driving sports cars you need to learn to drive a manual car first!

This might be a bit harsh, but if you can't get the hang of changing gears then maybe you should not be driving. Its really not hard. Obviously if you prefer autos then fine, but try and pass your test in a manual otherwise you will be very limited in the cars you can drive.

My tip would be whenever you're a passenger in a car, watch the driver to see when they change

Dating Male Virgins
Posted: 11/13/2009 2:18:46 AM

I know what you mean, but some people have to start somewhere. The thing that I fear is that if I date a girl and me and her get along well, and it gets to that point, she'll do a total 180 degree turn if she found out that I was a virgin. Is it expected for guys to have done it by 23? Would prostitutes be a good place to start? (Rhetorical question)

You can see by some of the reactions here that some people are very unsympathetic to older male virgins so just don't tell her. Theres no law that says you have to tell your partner how many people you have had sex with and that goes if the number is zero or a thousand.

I was a late starter as well - I never said anything and she never guessed (I think haha)

Most guys are rubbish on their first time because they are usually 17 or 18 and haven't got a clue. Someone of your age will know a lot more about sex even if he hasn't actually done it.

most popular mixed race relationships
Posted: 11/12/2009 6:41:35 AM

The most popular mixed race relationships in America are black men and white women, followed by white men and Asian women. I'm just wondering why you think this is. Any theories? Why aren't there lots of Asian men dating black women, or white women dating Asian men. What makes these couples most numerous?

Basically because certain races rank higher in terms of attractiveness (on average)

black men rank high because they tend to have strongly masculine characteristics and Asian women rank high because they tend to have strong feminine characteristics. The opposite is true for Asian men and black women.

Obviously these are massive generalisations so I hope no-one is offended!

How long should we view a profile & what three things do you look for in a person and their profile?
Posted: 11/12/2009 4:31:56 AM
1. Physical attraction - there needs to be something that catches the eye

2. Personality - sense of humour, something interesting about what they write and how they write it. Probably the most important but need to pass step 1 first to notice it!

3. Compatibility -practical stuff like how far away, interests, age etc

Disgraceful behaviour by the Sun and (to a lesser extent) the mother

Yes the letter looks pretty shoddy from what I've seen, but thanks to this episode I imagine in future situations the parent will get a standardised typed letter or one checked over and edited so carefully that any personal touch will be lost

First meet at home
Posted: 11/2/2009 5:02:25 AM

Although I agree with everyone here I would like to add another view point to see if anyone else can see the difference.........

A lot of people will go out drinking on a Saturday night and have a 1 night stand with a complete stranger some will be blind drunk but some will do it just because they can or want to etc. Some (not all if the pavement next to my work place goes by anything) will happen in one of the peoples houses.

They may have known this person 5 minutes.

How is this any different apart from the fact drink is involved so lessoning the senses?

The difference is that they have known that person 5 minutes, which is 5 minutes longer than they have known someone from an internet dating site before a first meet!

I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to agree to meeting at home.

Should Alcohol Be A Classified Drug?
Posted: 11/2/2009 2:19:34 AM
No, alcohol shouldn't be a classified drug because consumed in moderation it is not harmful. It does cause massive social problems - much more than most illegal drugs - but I don't believe the majority should be punished because of those who can't control themselves.

Cannabis is clearly in the wrong category and should be C not B.

School Children and Respect for Teachers.
Posted: 10/22/2009 4:49:59 AM

The near total lack of respect that the younger generation has in this day and age is astounding. Even when I was at school, in the classes 5 years behind us, I could hear a change.

Totally agree, I'm of the same generation as you and I can remember noticing the change - when kids started to realise that they had more rights than the teachers. The difference between when our generation was at school 20-odd years ago and now is scary.

The fact that some parents even back their kids for rebelling against authority just sums up the general decline in society.

Political parties and their manifestoes
Posted: 10/14/2009 4:18:14 AM

I thought mankind (and womankind) was an intelligent race of beings who learned from their mistakes. Clearly not here in the UK

and after a few years of the Tories, I wonder what will happen then? They will become as unpopular as Labour are now within their first or second term and then we'll see the rise of New New Labour who will be seen as the solution to all the countries problems.

Why not give someone else a chance? and in the absense of any other sensible alternative that means the Lib Dems.

1)They speak more sense than any other party on the economy - Vince Cable seems to be respected by almost everyone

2)They were against the war in Iraq - probably the single biggest error of this Labour government, which the Tories would also have done.

3)They are the only party that will tax the rich more and the poor less

If people get away from the idea that its a two-horse race, surely they should be in the running because they seem to speak the most sense on so many things.

Posted: 10/14/2009 2:13:38 AM

Even Belgium has more influence in the EU than we do

eh? just because the parliament is located there doesn't mean they have more influence as a country!

Due to geographical location and traditional alliances within the EU, we dont have much influence

Our Geographical location is pretty much central, surely? A little stretch of water (with a high speed train going through it) hardly puts us on the margins geographically!

Ask the French or the Germans and they will tell you that the EU has been swinging far too much towards the British economic model

You're right we pay the most in, along with the other large and powerful members.

cigarette vending ban, whats next
Posted: 10/13/2009 2:31:16 AM
Alcohol doesnt when taken responsably, where as tobacco kills no matter what in the end...

It doesn't kill no matter what - it increases the risk of cancer etc, but not all smokers die because of smoking.

Alcohol is still far, far more damaging to society than smoking. And it affects others far more than smoking does (especially now that passive smoking isn't an issue) - drink driving, alcohol fueled violence

Yes a world without tobacco would be great in theory, but people will use something else - its human nature to have vices. At some point in the future I think we will realise that smoking wasn't that bad really.

Paedophiles...Should We Be Publicising Their Whereabouts?

I never understand this debate

Surely if a paedophile is considered a danger they should still be locked up

but if they are deemed fit for release they should be allowed to live a normal life.

There should be no inbetween.

I just cannot comprehend the benefits of releasing them and then not allowing them to be part of normal society - surely that will most likely lead to them going back to their old ways.

Signal Crayfish
Posted: 10/12/2009 3:26:34 AM
I tried it last summer in oxford using crab lines and bacon for bait, caught about 20 in an afternoon, you leave them in a bucket for a day or two changing the water regularly while they clean their systems out then just chucked them straight into boiling water - we reasoned that this would be the most humane way!

Overall you don't get much meat for your efforts, but its great fun and environmentally beneficial

The crayfish vary in size and colouring so in an area where both species are present it could be difficult to tell them apart - but in most of the country I think you only get the American ones

Why are so many British people so opposed to the EU ?
Posted: 10/12/2009 2:14:32 AM

I wish there would be a referendum in this country too regardless of who wins the upcoming election because the British people when faced with the real facts about the treaty as opposed to the nonsense you read in here and the press they will vote Yes too.

You cannot compare the British and the Irish when it comes to views on the EU. The British people would vote No with a huge majority. A vote on whether to even stay in the EU would be a close call.

The British people have been bombarded with anti-EU propaganda from the tabloids for so long and combined with the lies and incompetance of our governments this has created a deep rooted anti-EU feeling. People don't care about the facts - even if the treaty specifically placed limitations on the powers of the EU over national governments (which I think it should) people would still vote against it simply because it is an EU treaty.

It is now impossible to hold a reasoned public debate on the EU in Britain which is why we won't be allowed a say. No government wil risk it because the public will vote against the EU. So by doing the right thing democratically the government risks the country's economic stability. Its convenient for the Tories that the treaty will be ratified by the time they get in.

Its a sad state of affairs really!

Posted: 10/9/2009 2:46:42 AM
Whats wrong with it?

it prints silly, sensationalist stories from a very right-wing viewpoint and I think because it looks more like a serious newspaper than the Sun or Mirror, people can be more influenced by it.

But at the end of the day all papers have their biased slant on things - Guardian readers are equally subject to stereotyping. As long as you recognise that papers have a bias and have a mind of you own its not really a problem.

Why do people get so defensive about being "European"? Its only a wider identity. Just because we are an island doesn't mean we somehow don't have a wider identity.

Most continents have islands, I am not aware of any of the others who don't view themselves as being from that continent. Why do some British people?

Posted: 10/8/2009 8:23:09 AM
fair enough, maybe I've exaggerated a bit and its not quite that easy and obviously you have to be in the right places - but I think its still generally men who do the chasing and I can't imagine any woman going to a nightclub or lively pub and not getting chatted up by at least one bloke during the course of the evening.

Its much more difficult for a man and thats why they go to prostitutes, its not rocket science.

er, the hypothetical situation I described was to illustrate the fact that a woman can get sex whenever she wants. It doesn't happen of course because a woman doesn't need to advertise herself like that - the men come chasing anyway...for a man its different and thats why men go to prostitutes.
