Age differences between a couple ... Does it really matter?
Posted: 3/20/2006 11:28:39 PM
I've noticed that there's some stigma (go figure) with turning 40. Up through 39, I had no problem dating women in their late 20s or early 30s. As soon as I hit the big four-oh, it was like I got 'OLD GUY' tattooed across my forehead. What is it about that number that automatically makes younger women go 'EWWWWWWWWW'???

Katrina: Where's that foreign aid?
Posted: 8/31/2005 9:57:50 AM
Thanks, but I didn't say that for a pat on the back. The previous poster suggested that we were bickering rather than doing something about it. I think we can do something about it AND have spirited conversation.

And while we're on the subject, let me throw out my gratitude to any of you who might be helping in any way. Louisiana is my neighbor and, as many of you might be aware, Houston is temporarily home to quite a few. I heard a recent report that 30,000 are being bussed from the Superdome to the Houston Astrodome. Hotels are at capacity. I wish I could say there have been no reports of price gouging, but you can't have it all. Kudos to those who've made our visitors feel welcome and to those of you exploiting them... for shame!!

Ok... this time I'm really going to work. Good day.

Cute, but off-topic.

Foxefire was the only poster who actually read the original post instead of reading something into it.

And yes, I've already donated cash. I'll be taking a truckload of clothes and such to the Astrodome this evening. I'm also participating in a fundraiser this weekend hosted by a local club of which I am a member. I wish I could spare three weeks to volunteer, but I can't.

I'm going back to work. Thanks for the interraction. Ya'll have fun.

Should it be legal to shoot looters on site?
Posted: 8/31/2005 9:08:51 AM
Unfortunately, video on CNN and FoxNews showed people carrying televisions, entire racks of tennis shoes, etc. Hardly necessities. And yes, under martial law, it is legal.

Add this to your thoughts: What about food? Tons of food is sitting there spoiling as we speak. Would taking that food be considered looting?

If you'll reread the original post, you'll see that I said I can't find any articles regarding foreign aid, other than Russia and Venezuela. I asked for readers to post examples of foreign aid, because I can't find any. I'm still waiting.

There were no insults to anyone's integrity. You seem to be taking this a bit personally, while nothing in this post was ever directed at you. Who's jumping down who's throat? Please.

This was a question posed to stir debate, but some of you seem to be taking it as an accusation.

To be clear, I'm not expecting outside help. Not going to be upset if we don't get it. I'm just curious to see who might offer. I thought it was particularly interesting that Venezuela offered. That's all.

And all of the video systems work great with no electricity. C'mon. Get real. Yes, I take issue with a 'shoot on sight' policy as well, but videotape? Think about what you're saying.

The solution? Don't loot!

Katrina: Where's that foreign aid?
Posted: 8/31/2005 8:37:19 AM
To be fair, we're talking apples and oranges. The 9/11 was a terrorist attack, not a natural disaster. The WTC is a stone's throw away from Canada. Twenty-four Canadians died in the WTC attack. Certainly, we appreciate the help provided by Canada and the many other nations that participated. However, it's hard to ignore that the free world had a vested interest.

Let's just say "We seldom receive outside help."

I disagree with your assertion that we would withhold aid in a natural disaster such as this due to policy disagreements. And there is no self-pity here, friend. It's simply an observation. We are quite capable of taking care of ourselves.

This is not a case of rich or poor. We're not talking about a welfare plan. We're talking about helping out where there is a need. America offers its assistance where needed and asks for nothing in return. We don't withhold because we oppose their policies. We don't ask them how much money they have in the bank. We just do it because it's the right thing to do.

It would be nice to see that reciprocated every now and then.

France? Germany? Canada? Bueller?

Bueller????

I've been searching for any news story stating that ANY foreign country has pledged aid for the people affected by Katrina. I found that Russia and Venezuela (gasp) have offered assistance. In times of tragedy, the U.S. is usually the first to step up to the plate and offer assistance. It seems our kindness goes unnoticed, or at least unappreciated.

If anyone has information on foreign aid, please post it. I'd like to think we're really not in this all alone.

Gray Hair--to die for or to dye?
Posted: 8/29/2005 9:09:21 PM

I just found a cool shampoo at Wal Mart that you use for different colored dyed hair. What ever color your hair (red, bruinet, blonde) is what the color of the shampoo is and it helps retain that color. I love it!

Wal-Mart = Nirvana

I had no gray hair until I met my ex-g/f. Now I'm looking for another one? God! What's wrong with me????

Support the troops..ask questions
Posted: 8/29/2005 6:42:52 PM
The bill in question was actually $1.8 Billion and was defeated because it was to be funded with cuts in "other unspecified domestic programs" later. No one is going to pass an unfunded increase. A new bill was introduced by Republicans for $1.5 Billion funded by specific budget offsets. The Democrats have introduced a competing bill for $1.42 Billion.

You can't spend money you don't have, and the Democrats knew this back in April. They knew the measure would fail, but it made good press; similar to the "Reinstate the Draft" bill introduced by Democrat Charles Rangel. It was soundly defeated, but it was instrumental in getting the ignorant masses stirred up over "Bush is going to reinstate the draft", even though he had nothing to do with it.

I can't believe you people still fall for this crap.

Truth/White Lies
Posted: 8/28/2005 12:52:15 PM
I think one factor you're ignoring is the fact that many people people lie not to spare your feelings, but more to preserve their image. Many times, telling the truth tells more about yourself than your 'victim'. A person can easily give away the fact that they're superficial, racist, cheap, insecure, etc. just by telling you the truth. It's easier to lie, hurt your feelings, keep you guessing and look good in the process, right?

If you're referring to Common-Law marriage, the requirements vary greatly from state to state. Even so, most states require that you 'agreed' to be married, and you declare publicly that you are married. Canada does not recognize common-law marriage.

This link gives you a breakdown of each state's common-law marriage requirements:

Military victories are crafted with overwhelming force and an unconditional surrender war goal.
Posted: 8/24/2005 2:22:32 AM

Nor is their a substitute for running your country into a mountain of debt, overextending your military, and getting involved in a situation where you have no control over it's final outcome.

Monty do you have the facts and figures for the war?

Actually, America's national debt, per capita, is only slightly higher than Canada's:

Canada: 25K per citizen
U.S.: 26.5K per citizen

If you factored in all of those illegal aliens who are dying to get here, it's probably even less.

Having said that, it's too high and the Bush administration is spending too much. However, the discretionary spending increases in the 2004 and 2005 budgets outpaced spending allotments for the war in Iraq, even taking into account the recent $81 Billion approved by Congress.

Should salary determine relationships?
Posted: 8/23/2005 6:37:26 PM
It’s a mixed up muddled up shook up world.

It's a sad fact that many women are only after the $$$. I'm self-employed. About 4 years ago, business was great. I was making money hand-over-fist. Had a gorgeous g/f, head over heals in love. What I didn't realize until later, after 9/11 and the market began to lag, she wasn't quite so eager to hang around and be faithful if I wasn't dropping tons of cash on her. Yeah, it was my stupidity and a hard lesson learned, but also makes you look at all women with a somewhat jaundiced eye.

What really burns my ass is women can get dolled up, go out clubbing, get totally plastered and never spend a penny. It just ain't fair!!! I've been told certain guys can do the same thing, but I'm not quite desperate enough to start hitting the gay bars.

Genital Herpes
Posted: 8/23/2005 5:53:18 PM
It's a tough call. You can rationalize it all day long, but there's always some risk involved. If the worst happens, then you're the one having to explain to your partner what you have, what the risks are, etc., etc. Then, of course, there are those who don't bother telling anyone.

This young lady contracted it from her partner during what she thought was a 3 year monogomous relationship. Apparently he was doing a little sleeping around and brought home someone else's luggage. Surprise!!!

I'm sure hygiene plays a significant role. The article mentions this. I'm not advocating circumcision. I'm just pointing out that there are documented health benefits. Is it possible that these same benefits may be achieved through proper personal hygiene? Who knows?

And to address your question about a 'cut': A cut can be any opening in the skin. It can be microscopic. A pimple or blister. Brushing against a tooth or even vigorous sexual activity can cause these microscopic breaks or tears in the skin. It only takes one little HIV monster to infect you.

Ok. You win. The doctors were frauds and the study was a complete waste of time. Happy?

What do you want me to tell you? I didn't do the study. It was performed by accredited physicians and researchers. It was written up in medical journals. It apparently has some validity. I'm not a doctor. I can't explain it to you. I can only point out the results. I did that. If you want more answers, do your own research.

Since you obviously didn't follow the link and read the article, here is an excerpt that attempts to answer your question:

Laboratory studies have found that the foreskin is rich in white blood cells, which are favored targets of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. So the theory is that men who are uncircumcised are much more likely to contract the virus during sex with an infected woman, and that the epidemic spreads when these newly infected men have sex with other women within their network of sexual partners.

Regardless of whether you, or I, or even THEY understand why, you can't argue with the results. And the results showed that circumcised men were 70% less likely to contract HIV.

@Bambi - I would have to disagree with your assertion that there is no medical reason for circumcision. There was a recent study that shows African men are 70% less likely to contract HIV when circumcised.

French and South African AIDS researchers have called an early halt to a study of adult male circumcision to reduce HIV infection after initial results reportedly showed that men who had the procedure dramatically lowered their risk of contracting the virus.

The study's preliminary results, disclosed Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal, showed that circumcision reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 70 percent -- a level of protection far better than the 30 percent risk reduction set as a target for an AIDS vaccine.

According to the newspaper account, the study under way in Orange Farm township, South Africa, was stopped because the results were so favorable. It was deemed unethical to continue the trial after an early peek at data showed that the uncircumcised men were so much more likely to become infected.

I'm not trolling. Just casting aspersions. Personally, the whole idea of purchasing an 'overseas bride' is repugnant. Indentured servitude is what it amounts to, admit it or not.

Just my opinion, and certainly nothing personal. It just flies in the face of everything we hold dear here in America (and I assume the same is true for Canada).

Equate this with, say, a thread on sex with children. Let's say you posed a question regarding what's the easiest way to secure sex with kids. Do you think you'd get a lot of serious answers? I doubt it.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

For every woman who tells me she doesn't do casual sex, I make it a point to send them a formal invitation!

Ok, Ok... seriously: Most guys are going to be interested in sex... eventually. If he really cares for you, he'll wait. But to be fair, you can't dangle that carrot and say "You'll get it when the mood finally strikes me." You'll need to give him something to set his sites on. If it's when you're married, fine. Tell him that. If it's the second Tuesday in October, fine. Tell him THAT. But give him a goal. Otherwise, in his mind, he's waiting for a time that may never come.

Genital Herpes
Posted: 8/22/2005 10:33:47 PM
You see, that's the attitude I was expecting. I did a LOT of reading on the issue. You'd be surprised how many people have misconceptions about genital herpes. Did you know that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men have it? About 20% of the women don't even know they have it because they've never had an outbreak.

In general, you're not contagious unless you're shedding, which is usually accompanied by an outbreak. With treatment, your occurance of outbreaks can be limited significantly or eliminated altogether.

It's quite possible to engage in sexual activity with someone infected with genital herpes and never contract it yourself.

On the downside, condoms do not significantly reduce the risk of infection as the contagious areas (areas where the virus is shedding; usually around the outbreak area) is not coverd by the condom.

To say her life is over or who'd want her because she has the genital equivilent of a coldsore seems a bit melodramatic. Maybe your friend should educate herself on the virus. She might feel a little better once she knows what she's dealing with.

Her worst enemy is really ignorance.

I had an experience a while back in which a young lady informed me, prior to any sexual activity, that she had genital herpes. She told me what she knows about it and suggested I do some research and educate myself. I did.

Question: How would YOU view a prospective sexual partner informing you of their issue, and how would you handle the situation?
