Tesla and the electic aether motors for cars

Get a copy of the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car" about the miraculous
and amazing electric car made my GM in the 1970's that was
given out to celebrities to drive for a year. It never needed any type
of service or repairs, was super fast, quiet and smooth and was a dream
to drive.
It was destroyed in wrecking yards finally despite the owners pleading
with them not to take it back. Every last one was rounded up and
demolished when GM finally realized that, with such an astounding
car, no one would ever buy a replacement car or pay for repairs again.
In a car museum somewhere there is only one left in the world but the
entire engine has been taken out and destroyed.
The car still only had about an 80 mile range(for average drivers). And hopefully that movie went into the aspect that GM wouldnt have made any money off the car. So hippies can blame GM, but rationally its hard to blame them. The cars cost more then they were worth and just like today, they would only sell to a limited number of people.
I don't get why people insist on these electric cars. Its just a bad idea. Our society is not built around vehicles with such limited range. Not to mention an electric car or a hybrid is far from clean technology.(just think of what happens to that battery when it can no longer be recharged). It will either sit in a junkyard and become an environmental nightmare. Or, they'll set up an infrastructure of semi trucks to transport batteries, plus the polution put out whil recycling the batteries sort of defeats the point.
Prius's make me laugh in that regard. because all said and done, a regular economy car is more "green".

Frank, Italy's been making 4 banger sports cars for decades. So has Japan.
North American cars are too bulky and heavy to be fast on 4 cylinders. Get rid of all the toys going into a car and you can get decent performance with a 4.
Too much safety equipment, too much toy weight, too many power accessories.
Lotus offers a fine example of what a 4 banger can do.
Thats really not true at all. japan's 4cyl sports cars are not light be any means. And American car companies have made many 4cyl sports cars(see srt-4/cobalt ss/svt focus/ etc etc)
The truth of the matter is that people in america like V8s, and companies like GM get pretty great mileage from those V8s. I believe its the C5 corvette that if you get a 6spd model and drive like a granny, you can nearly get 30mpg on the highway.

Andy,
Look up a car called the "Aptera"
Lot of buzz being created over it. Astounding range, good power. Worth a look-see!
Just looked it up, and it really just backed up my original point before. That aptera is novelty to 99% of people. I'll start with my very first complaint, the site is geared towards "ooh and ahh", with no clear tabs for the freakin specs. It took me a few of going through each tab only to find that they do not list any specifications on range/charge time. This makes me suspect to what it will actually do in real world conditions.
Then just looking at the car, it won't sell big. I would argue that they might sell 100-200(tops) and go bankrupt. And thats being extremely generous. The car is basically a battery powered 'T-rex"(google it if you dont know) and those don't sell very well because a limited number of people care to own something that looks so strange.
For comparison, look at the original honda insight. A very strange looking car, but mechanically similar to a prius. Toyota sold a ton more prius's then Honda sold Insights because the prius looks like a regular car. And i will argue that toyota would have sold many more if they would've made the prius a decent car.(not fun to drive at all)
Evillolli- but the discussion was related to electric motors in cars, so i thought i would chime in with my 2 cents on the topic. That tesla looks nice, except top gear(car show) tested one and was pretty disappointed with the range when they drove it in the way that most people would drive a sports car. Which kinda ruins the point of owning something like that, if you cant ever drive it in the way that it was intended.

I'm not sure about a motor run by magnets, but fuelless electric cars have been viable for years now. GM, Toyata, Ford, and other automakers had cars on the market via lease, but most were recalled and destroyed once they were no longer required to make them.
No, they really werent and still arent today. Most electric cars have a range of like 40miles. Which "experts" swear is perfect for the average american, but i have doubts unless you live in a really condensed city. On top of that, a 40 miles max mileage limits what you can do if you happen to have a busy night planned.
The Tesla sports car is about the best that has come around, but its $100k car and if you drive it like a sports car, it still gets pretty terrible range.
IMO, the only real way we're going to get off fossil fuels is to find reasonable and smart alternatives to gasoline/diesel. Right now we've pretty much got the diesel part sorted out. Some people have figured out how to make bio-diesel from algae and modern diesel engines(like what you'll find a TDI VW) runs and drives like any other car. Plus the algae fuel can produce large quantities of biodiesel in a relatively small area. I could see that being the next smart alternative and at some point all of the major companies will start pumping out diesel economy cars.
Funny how it will take so long, considering if you go to europe you can get a diesel mini cooper thats fun to drive and has much much better mpg then an awful prius.
I think electric cars are nothing more then a novelty. Until you can safely create an electric car thats enjoyable to drive(so it will actually sell) and has a full charge time of less then 20 minutes. so you could drive it for long distances.

Big Food is Telling us High Fructose Corn Syrup is Good For us in moderation..*cough* *cough*

i feel like this takes the good points about the bad things of high fructose corn syrup, but then ignores the fact that its still the fault of the person who chooses to have a ton of it in their diet.
Childhood onset diabetes is more to do with the bad parenting in this country.
I use to drink a ton of soda, its not "big foods" fault that i use to drink that crap. Its my fault.

Taking good profile pictures?
Posted: 2/11/2010 3:55:32 PM
Hopefully this would be the subsection since its dedicated to improving my profile.
I was wondering if anyone had some tips for taking a better profile picture? Im not sure if its my camera, or how im taking my pictures, but they never seem to come out right. The best picture i have was taken by someone else at a party, and i was quite drunk at the time. So for a variety of reasons, i cant use that.

Right now? no. The majority of people are still too stupid.
If we ever get a point where christianity is not the majority in this nation. It could happen, but that poor president would be catching jokes from every side in the media.

Braille on drive-up ATMS and other foolishness
Posted: 8/1/2009 1:30:26 AM
The real reason that there is braille on drive up machines is because they use the same buttons as the walk up machines, it would cost more to make two different sets of buttons solely for the purpose of preventing blind people from using the drive-ups.
Thats pretty much the case. My particular job has 2 basic types of keypads and they all have braille. Plus if they didnt, someone somewhere would sue over it.
Besides, its kinda pointless to argue about things that seem stupid on ATMs, because ATMs are kinda built for the notso bright ones. Ever wonder why machines will eat cards when left in the slot too long after a transaction? lol.

Uhhh... read the NEW Testament. Your lack of knowledge of the bible is evident.
The new testament is not any better. And besides both testaments are about the same god and same religion. It still applies. Its all fine if you wanna pick and choose, but it just lets me take christians less seriously and shows how its not god that created you, but you that has created the god to fit your lifestyle.
People want to act like the new testament is so different and clearly expresses christianity, but its the one that brings up the aspect of eternal torture for being a reasonable and logical person.
So the new testament is so much better because before "god" said to kill all nonbelievers, but now its just "they all deserve eternal torture"
How about when jesus makes a weapon to go beat theives? Such great teachings
Or the Serman on the mount where he tells everyone to sell their belongings and go preach.(something christians always seem to overlook)
The new testament is probably more absurd of the two w/ the zombie.

Christianity is not synonymous with a good person. Christianity is synonymous with believing in Jesus Christ as the son of God. Hitler was Christian. He knew that Jesus
is the son of God. He based his genicide on his beliefs. He is not a good person. "he is not SAVED" Christian people want somebody of a Christian denomination to raise their children or live under a certain belief in God. In the Bible it is clearly written that God loves
all people equally. We as Christians, should do the same and not have predujices.
That is what is written in the Bible.
Technically, hitler could be in heaven right now(if thatstuff were to be true)
And the bible contradicts itself in regards to treating people equally, as it clearly says to kill people of other views:
"Deuteronomy 17
17:2 If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant; 17:3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; 17:4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel; 17:5 Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die."
I agree christians should not have prejudice, but they do. Especially towards nonbelievers. There is noshortage of religious leaders who make unfounded slander towards us and have helped to make atheists the most distrusted minority in america, if not the world.

I can see where the OP is coming from. It wouldnt be an issue if christians didn't make up such a large majority in this country.(limiting the dating pool for us nonbelievers)
One of my last girlfriends carried that same christian w/ christian attitude and as far as trying to get me to convert. Yes its a personal preference, but IMO its an extremely shallow preference. At the end of the day no one really knows what happens after death. So why worry about belief systems?
And to the people who said it would cause a problem because the christian in the relationship would be worried about the other going to hell to be tortured.(and all that funstuff) It seems to me that it would have to cause more problems with the christian and his/her religion. How could any decent person love another person while thinking they deserve to go to hell at the same time?? I have to wonder if the christian religion preaches about christian w/ christian, because otherwise it might force the christian party to really consider their views.

Can White Americans REALLY judge what is racist and what is not?
Posted: 7/23/2009 10:41:08 PM
To me the definition of racism is a belief in the superiority one's perceived racial group over another perceived and the action that result from that perceived superiority.
And,conversely the belief in a another group's "inferiority" based solely on personal belief and not hard evidence.
An example: White Americans moving wholesalely from an area that is becoming increasingly minority, lowering the property values by moving and then calling the area the "bad side of town" because of the presence of minorities and the lowered property values.
Or
White Americans not watching shows w/ a predominately minority cast or relegating those shows to time outside of normal viewing hours and then subsequently claiming tha minorities are being prejudiced by starting networks that feature minority casts and viewpoints.
Or
White Americans ignoring scientific facts that lead to the conclusion that mankind evolved from areas in Central Africa based solely on their beliefs that Africans are "inferior" and thus they could not be the descendants of such "inferior" people.
well thats nice, but racism is racial hate regardless. hence the reason its entirely possible to find a black person thats racist(see jesse jackson)

The California Collapse
Posted: 7/23/2009 3:45:51 PM
Let me give you and example of how ridiculous Cali is:
I volunteer for an Non-Profit that is setting up a off leash dog park. Now the land was donated by Cal Trans and is a by pass that will never be used. We wanted to cut down all the weeds, level the ground and replant fresh grass, Cal Trans said go ahead. Guess what, Oh no in order to do this we have to pay the Cal EPA $3500 to do a environmental impact study that will take 3 -5 years. This is the kind of crap that makes doing business in this state ridiculous, no wonder businesses are fleeing and revenue is down.
I honestly believe that most of the agencies in the state are just a matter of self perpetuating, give me a pay raise, raise fees, taxation without representation, spun out of control bullsh!t.
dealing with any of the california environmental departments is good for a laugh but extremely frustrating.
I dealt with the guy in charge of CARB's vehicle modification department a few years ago. To this day i think that guy doesnt know anything about cars.
Basically i had an old 80s jeep that uses a carburetor, runs poorly, and pollutes much worse then any of the fuel injected counter parts.
Well Dodge created an EFI upgrade for like 3 grand. well long story short, someone figured out a way to do the exact the same upgrade for 800$ out of junkyard parts. After a few emails it came down the fact that even if i assembled the exact same kit, it wouldnt have the appropriate sticker.
My last email was asking the question: "So by Ca emission laws, it is more legal for my jeep to pollute twice as much as it would with fuel injection?"
I never got a reply.
I can only imagine what aftermarket companies go through. Since things that have nothing to do with emissions have to be certified to be legal. Which is probably a 5k minimum fee. lol

Of course we can, such an idea completely undermines the idea that we're all the same on the inside.
The problem is that everyone seems to be quick to play the race card.
To respond to the officer that arrested the black scholar i will use a quote from my recent criminal justice class:
The teacher(also black) asked the rhetorical question: "why do police profile people? Because it works."
The fact of the matter is that the scholar would have avoided a big headache if had just shown some damn ID. And would this still be racist if a black cop did the exact same thing? no.

Evolution.
Posted: 7/20/2009 6:50:10 PM
Actually the exact same thing could be said in reverse. Evolution can't stand on its own without creationism either.
No, thats completely wrong. If creationism disappeared like a religious fart in the wind. Evolution would still stand.
Creationism is this: "God(christian god) created everything and here are all the flaws with evolution that we think show it"
So remove evolution and you get "god created everything". There is not even a shred of evidence. The best arguement you had was disproven during the Dover case.
The sad part is that this creationism/ID nonsense is making this idiotic jump of what "god did" without proving that god exists.
Infact i could take the entire creationism/ID LIE and replace "god" with "santa" and it is just as valid as before.

I'm not sure i agree. Sure there are many of us who are workaholics to get the latest and greatest luxury items, but i would say its not the majority of the new generations.
Also, "things that should matter the most" is extremely subjective. Not everyone is into the whole family first lifestyle.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I was not born in Texas and was only in Texas for about 7 years, ..Most would probably consider me a Californian. Yet where I hang or hung my hat has nothing to do with the matter.
That is why I say it is better to attack the Post rather than the Poster...You get a lot more mileage.
Both Creationsism and Evolution are considered THEORIES
As pointed out by some on here and other places there are some very good THEORIES behind what some call Creationism and some call Intelligent Design. There are also some very good THEORIES behind what some call Evolution.
That is why I am for the teaching of both THEORIES.
Since there is a wide variation in the meaning of Theory I decided not to include a defination of theory in my post. It looks like the word Theory would make a good debate in itself.
You don't understand the definition of a scientific theory.

Fatties have no one to blame but themselves. I don't believe that fat people have it any worse than anyone else. The fat people just like to complain, and they blame others for their own failings. There are plenty of successful people who are fat. They don't make up complaints about how unfair it is for fat people.

To me that would be the better compromise, especially if the teacher does it correctly. A good teacher would not knock either theory but give good research on both theories, with time for questions but not classroom debate. This would leave the students with some discussions to bring home and discuss with their parents and friends.
creationism is NOT a theory. Its not even a stance. Without evolution it cannot stand on its own.

The fact of evolution is the basis of all biology, and by extension of all applications of biology (notably including medicine.) Trying to learn biology or any anything related to biology without it is like trying to learn physics without math.
Anyone who seriusly believes the absolute falsehood that evolution has not been conclusively proven is either tragically brainwashed or a complete f***ing idiot.
Pretty much.
You would think this nonsense would have been settled at the Dover trial. When Micheal Behe was laughed out of court when he made his pathetic attempt for intelligent design.
Its gets proven time and again that it has no basis in reality.

what do you feel is the most UNATTRACTIVE piercing commonly done today?

All nose and lip piercings. And then one of my biggest peeves are the little studs that i've seen in the nose. It ends up looking like a little chrome acne.

Why does AA/NA folks tell the truth about it be religious ?

It doesnt work though. It has the same success rate as anyone who quits cold turkey.(about 5%)
Viable alternative? sure, there are plenty of secular programs to help with addictions. They teach all the same things without the absolute nonsense of telling people that completely help-less and need a great imagination and to have that imagination cure them of the addiciton.

Evolution.

I think the problem lies in our school system. As we've seen that kids are getting dumber and the school system is failing at producing competant people. Then mix in the religious mis-information and you have a high likelyhood of kids who have a very poor grasp of evolution.
I disagree with the person above me, because i think our system fails at teaching science and critical thinking effectively.

Atheists: What are your theories on how *it* all began?
Posted: 7/20/2009 12:32:05 AM
OP- i don't know, but none of the evidence points to any sort of deity. So until there is an established fact, i take the stance of "I dont know, but nothing points to a god"

Hottest Movie Scenes
Posted: 7/19/2009 1:06:29 AM
Not sure if it has been listed, but there is one that always stands out in my mind. Its not X-rated at all, but the whole scene is pretty hot.
In the movie "Slackers" when Angela and Dave are getting busy in the pool.

^ gotta love youtube.
The whole close to X-rated in a movie is kinda lost to me, because at that point i'd rather watch porn.

Whale Wars, anyone else love it for the wrong reason?
Posted: 7/18/2009 1:49:01 AM
I don't suppose anyone else caught the episode they aired tonight??
These people are really dumb. They used their "prop fouling" weapon. Which appeared to be some nylon cable and floats.
The captian said something to the effect of "Its actually stronger then steel so you can't cut it". And guess what?? The prop sucked it in, cut it up and spit it out.
Granted that cable might have a more breaking strength, but these whaling ships are freaking ice rated.
EDIT: also the whalers have started throwing large nuts back at the eco-terrorists. It obviously doesnt do anything because the eco-nuts have helmets, but its kinda funny. lol
