Cougar Town
Posted: 10/12/2009 1:51:43 AM
Well they were saying on Extra that it looks like the curse of "Friends" has finally been broken and that this show will stay on tv for awhile. It's not a bad show, but not great either, I find it somewhere in the middle. I am just surprised at Courtney Cox being the star, it might have made more sense to cast an unknown and make her a star with this show.

Prosecuting Authors of torture memos
Posted: 10/5/2009 12:30:24 AM
Why are people acting as if the US torturing what they called "enemy combatants" is anything new? The US has done it before and will do it again I am sure. Examples include The Philippine–American War( it was called the "water cure" back then) and during the American Indian Wars(The Sand Creek Massacre). Examples where the US backed "good guys" did their share of dirty deeds are endless; the South Viet Namese and South Korean armed forces as well as Egyptian Intelligence.
Such tactics really are the norm from a historical perspective, rather then the exception. The United States is no exception to this rule.

Would it be possible to get rid of the concept of money all together and would it be a good thing?
Posted: 9/30/2009 11:04:37 PM
Hmm do some of you propose that as a human race we go back to bartering? As in you go to the grocery store and take a can of beans and a loaf of bread, and in return you sweep the floors and help them stack shelves?
I think the Soviet Bloc countries had some kind of system like this back in the Cold War days when all their currency was basically worthless, it was a kind of trading block called COMECON. It was supposed to be the communist verision of the EU and what they did was figure out what goods from one country could be exchanged for what other goods from another country. As in Bulgaria would trade with East Germany 2 million cans of processed tomatos for 5 jet engines. We all know what happened to COMECON.

Sex and politics mixing??? No wayyy. Who would have thought?? Remember JFK? We all remember Bill and Monica. Nothing new or earth shattering about politicans getting caught with their pants down, no matter what they say on the record.

Quintessentially Montreal
Posted: 9/16/2009 3:13:08 AM
Do not forget the smoked meat. You def should indulge at Schwarz's on St.Laurent Street. It does not get any more Montreal then that. Arguably the most Montreal experience that there is. Here is the link http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/. Perhaps a serving of poutine might also be in order, the best place in Montreal for poutine is probably Patati Patata located at 4177 St. Laurent (at Rachel) . Enjoy..

Tattoos

Tatts are ok , I have two. But some don't age well and I find that the color green just looks wrong on human skin, something about it just does not work and plus the more complex the colors, the worse it ages.

John Lithgow - Dexter Season 4

Hmmm I wonder if this will play out according to the Dexter formula. He ends up making friends with the new killer(John Lithgow in this case)and ends up killing him?? I like the return of Carradine's character from the second season.

Chris Brown
Posted: 9/8/2009 6:48:12 AM
Hmmm I believe it was once said, "The only thing the artist owes the audience is a good performance." This is still true in my opinion. I find it strange that people have to go and judge an artist by how they live their off stage lives. I agree that Chris Brown probably has done his fair share of bad things in life, but no matter how you look at it, he can definitely sing and dance. But does an artists' behavior off stage dictate how you feel about their work?? There is something on judging their art( whatever it may be, music, painting, etc) on its merits alone. In the case of Chris Brown, I actualy like his music and performance skills, if I listen to him sing, I don't condone what he does with his personal life.

Women going to bars alone

Its the 21st century. People-either men or women- can go anywhere they want to in a group or not. Its totally up to them. I think most people have other things to think about then what it means if someone is at a bar or on holiday alone.

FYI Car thieves
Posted: 8/17/2009 11:15:37 PM
Nothing really new about cars getting stolen for parts by youth gangs or anyone else really. Do the police really need new powers and new laws to fight car theft?? Don't they already have enough powers in the existing laws?? I'm always wary about giving police "special" powers.

a felon wanting to become a volunteer firefighter
Posted: 7/26/2009 10:55:56 PM
Never really thought about this that much to tell the truth. But I kind of agree, I have my doubts if an arsonist would make a good firefighter or a former dealer would make a good EMT. If somone who had committed say insurance fraud or bank fraud or art theft or some other white collar crime, I'd really have no problem with it at all.
To the poster who is against having criminals server in the military I say fine, then you go join the army. If they want to join up and fight I say go for it then. Isn't the army always shorthanded whenever there is a real war anyways?

Medical Terms you won't hear used in Canada
Posted: 7/23/2009 1:51:51 AM
Both the Canadian and the US health care systems have their own problems. But overall, in the US if you break your leg and it costs you 50, 000 dollars to get it treated, then there is something wrong. Then Obama is right, tear up that system and start over from scratch, it can't get much worse. Seeing Micheal Moore's movie "Sicko" helps illustrate that point. The Canadian Health Care systems is far from perfect, but aren't more tax dollars spent on Health Care in the US already, and the tax payers still have to shell out for health care on top of enduring crazy wait times ?? Seems like they are getting the worse of both worlds.

Is this the Best Speech by a US President EVER???
Posted: 7/22/2009 10:43:23 PM
Yes I think that Kennedy and Lincoln were probably the most eloquent. FDR deserves a mention for his "Nothing To Fear Except Fear Itself "speech as well. Ronald Reagan was crazily eloquent as well, but the subtance of his speeches was mostly bunk and rhetoric mixed in with a fair share of right wing lunacy. It takes both eloquence and relevance to make a great speech.

California is Broke, set Manson Free...
Posted: 7/22/2009 5:37:02 AM
Well Cali is indeed good and broke. Why don't they make whatever money they can off prisoners like Manson?? Let him sell his books and art and songs and exercise videos and just have California keep 100% of all money. Maybe they can hire him out for public speaking events and then pocket the money as well. There are enough wack jobs out there who will pay to see him speak and perform his music, the profits the state can keep-minus whatever it costs to have him escorted by fat, mean looking sheriffs with anti-personnel shotguns and tasers to wherever he has to go.
And yeah Oakville in Northern Cali is experimenting with taxing the sale of cannibis.

This is why so many people seem to hate Cops
Posted: 7/21/2009 10:28:51 PM
With all the police that they have in America-local police, state police, federal police, ATF, DEA, ICE how come there is still crime? For every criminal there must be 10 cops on the payroll.
If the police spent as much time and resources chasing down and investigating murders, rapes, kidnappings, extortion as they spent on enforcing traffic laws then there would be little crime nowadays. If your house gets broken into then you make an appointment to go see the police, and then they do a bit of paperwork. Drive through a red light, then they are there waiting for you. You hear about murder and kidnapping investigations going on forever, but at the end of the month you can count 20 police cars watching traffic and in speed traps while you drive home from work. You hear about riots where the police do very little, but if the rioters had illegally parked, sure enough the police would get them. It’s a question of priorities.

The spelling of your / you're in America
Posted: 7/9/2009 1:56:47 AM
Hmmm ....I still don't get this one . Why are some people so obsessed with spelling? If a word is spelt incorrectly does it make someone bad? As I've said before, what makes me laugh the most is that lots of people who say that they hate bad spelling will always have "some college" or "some university" in their profiles. That is very strange.

Posted: 12/27/2008 4:32:32 AM
This is an interesting post. Bottom line would probably be there are some rude people everywhere and there are polite and considerate people everywhere too. I guess it's the luck of the draw who you run into where.
But when I tell people elsewhere that I am from Montreal and quite a few times, usually elsewhere in Canada, I get "Oooo I hate Quebec.." as a response. Many times I didn't even ask their opinion of Quebec, but I got it anyways. Or, "Your english is really good you know." So sometimes to play along I'd ask "Sure ok you hate Quebec, uhmm why did someone steal your car there or mug you when you visited??" What always amazes me is that 9 times out of 10, the anti-Quebec sentiment originates from someone who has never even been to Quebec, but hates it anyways. In the States or in Europe I have usually gotten a positive response when I tell people where I'm from. Go figure.

*~*~Go Leafs Go*~*~ 2008/2009 Season
Posted: 11/27/2008 10:41:22 PM
I agre with the poster who scratches his head over why the NHL bothers with some US teams that make no money and want more in strange American places. The Hamilton Bulldogs are more a question of when, not if. The money is there, the fans are there and it just smells right. Build it and they will come. I smile when I think of the Leafs playing the Bulldogs. Hamilton will probably win a Cup before the Leafs. The Leaf owners don't really care if they win or not,as long as the cash keeps flowing.

Royal Bank of Canada plans to outsource to India about 280 back-office jobs
Posted: 11/25/2008 5:08:55 AM
Sweet is right about the outsourcing done by the big banks and large companies, both in Canada and in the U.S. Nothing new with this, its pretty much a standard practice nowadays. I’m not really surprised that the big banks in Canada will be getting sweetheart loans/grants from Ottawa, just like their big brothers in the States. But what makes me wonder, is what exactly will the conditions be for these loans/grants be in Canada? I think they will probably be, take this money and use it as you see best and we’ll trust you. That I find is crazy, the banks will just use it to pay overseas workers and outsource more jobs. If outsourcing has to happen, fine, but why should the taxpayers foot the bill??? Our tax money , at least, should be spent in Canada not India.

In spite of that I'd have to say their early dance/rock and roll/Chuch Berry kind of music they made when they were breaking out in the early 60s. You can feel the energy on the songs when you listen to them. Album and song both have the same name.."Twist and Shout"

The ability to correct spelling in other's profiles!
Posted: 11/22/2008 8:55:20 AM
I find that really funny. I think life is about bigger things then checking other people's speech patterns/writing habits/typos and spelling mistakes, unless someone is offering me money to do so. Then different rules apply. I must say I think some people have way too much time on their hands when they let this get to them. The best has to be when someone writes that they have issues with other people's writing and spelling and will hold it against them....nine times out of ten there will always be "some college" there. I guess that their dabbling in whatever community college is their entitlement...

Offshore drilling vs. Alternative energy time to voice your opinion!
Posted: 11/8/2008 6:05:14 AM
I think that there should be some offshore drilling. American dependence on foreign-especially middle eastern crude -oil should/must end. But as the new President, Obama clearly has the mandate to demand that additional environmental protection should also be a stipulation in exchange for any drilling rights. More governmental oversight with more inspection by the government , more and harsher regulations for the oil companies that do the drilling, stiffer fines in cases of violations and an additional tax on any profit made by the oil companies with resources taken from these offshore wells, more funds towards research by the companies that drill, payments from the proceeds of the oilwells towards a energy conservation education fund-IN ADDITION TO EXISTING TAXES/REGULATIONS/INSPECTIONS. The oil companies have already proved that they have failed America, more then once, and they will do so again unless they have a chain thrown on them and are watched like a hawk. With the money generated by the taxes & fees the government will then have money that can be invested in alternative energy. The Oil companies are floating in cash and could easily afford minor concessions. The oil companies have endlessly proven that they will do what it takes to make a profit and have done the average consumer no favors, and in return they should expect none. So let them drill but with a whole new existing set of rules for which they shall pay for. If they don't want to drill??Let the government do it on its own then they have the experts and technology and can probably do it cheaper then the companies and that way there would probably be better environmental safeguards.
Some will say that is Unamerican, but is letting the oil companies cheat the public and make lots of money in return for ruining the environment as they outsource jobs Americam? That is even more unamerican.

Hmmm..there might be a nugget of truth to this theory, but have found that there are women who are not considered attractive who were also bad at sex, and very attractive women who were quite "gifted". Its really hard to generalize about such a thing, its more about the individual I'd have to say.

Should Dion step down as leader of Canada's Federal Liberal Party?
Posted: 10/20/2008 3:55:07 AM
The Liberal Party was basically saying that if he does not want to leave, they will send a moving truck to his house to help him on his way.
Either Ignatieff, Bob Rae or Trudeau would be a better leader then him.
Dion would be better off in China or Africa somewhere in charge of the "Visit Canada" flyers at the local library. His Carbon tax idea was a loser and he was the wrong man at the wrong time. He belongs in a library, not in politics.

It's also funny to note that McCain and co. talk a lot about their experience versus Obama's lack thereof.
"Experience" like Rumsfeld and Cheney had in spades?? Wow, they did so well.
"Experience" like McCain had with Savings and Loans??
"Experience" like Sarah Palin has so much off?
Maybe Obama does not look so bad compared to those "experiences" .

A question to all the UNDECIDEDS
Posted: 9/11/2008 2:31:45 AM
Some posters mention that they are waiting for the debates between Obama and McCain??Really??? Ok, anyone remember the debates say between Reagan and Mondale in 1984?? Mondale made Reagan look like an old man who was not sure what day of the week it was. But what did that matter?? Reagan went on to win one of the biggest election victories in US history.
When Palin and Bidden debate I think Bidden , thanks to his many years of knowing governmental doublespeak migh have an edge, but does it really matter??
When Carter and Ford debated in 1976 Ford made some serious blunders and lost the election, but was it because of the debate or the fact that Ford just could not quite sell himself to the American people and they wanted the party of Watergate gone for a few years??
When Nixon and Kennedy went at it 1960, talking about Taiwan(basically nothing that really mattered to most Americans) and whatever else did it matter?? Kennedy won and Nixon went away for a few years. Was it because Kennedy outperformed Nixon in the debates or that Kennedy was able to win cause he was just more charismatic and able to steal more votes??

The Upcoming Election.... IN CANADA!
Posted: 9/7/2008 11:10:11 PM
As many people have mentioned here we are indeed in a charisma free election. Harper reminds me of my accountant, with all the charm, warmth and good humor accountants posses. But to be fair to Harper, he actually did cut the GST (not by much, but still a good start). As well they simplifed passport rules. These are two things I don't think the Liberals would ever have done.
Stefan Dion has no charisma at all. He reminds me of the high school physics teacher who was really smart, but always wore socks that did not match and had no idea about reality. His green/carbon tax idea won't sell. The Green Tax idea does not seem to be working out for Gordon Brown in England, hopefully it will be the same for Dion.
Layton won't win. The NDP is too deeply stuck in ideas that clearly won't work and refuses to concede that. Kind of like the Labor Party in England before Tony Blair, except worse off.
I think Justin Trudeau is not a bad candidate at all for the Liberals, his voice will definitely be heard in the future. I agree there is no divine right, but compared to most others Justin stands high above the usual party hacks and do nothing politicians that Canada has in abundance. There is definitely a place for him in politics. As for Ben Mulroney?? I'm glad he has made the Entertainement world his thing and not politics.

Dion. In my opinion. Is a follower, rather than a trend setter. Canada needs to stand as Canada.
Not someone Whose personality can be manipulated, While they are looking like a celebrity.

The Upcoming Election.... IN CANADA!
Posted: 9/3/2008 10:46:54 PM
I think Harper has pretty much buried his fixed term idea, I think he kind of secretly wants a Canadian version of US term limits, but for many reasons this does not sell well in Canada.
Kursk-buddy you are 1000% right about Layton and the NDP. If you think Dions' Carbon Tax is nuts, check out what the NDP has in store. Higher taxes for everything, especially gas. I'm sure that is just what every Canadian wants. I think my favorite NDP moment came when the NDP backed the Bloc to have Bill 101 implemented/take precedence over the Canadian Charter in Quebec and any function of the Canadian Government in Quebec, this will basically eliminate any chance of them getting any Quebec English seat. Freaky ideas from the NDP is nothing new.
The Carbon Tax thing combined with his bad written/spoken English and his utter lack of charisma basically dooms Dion, he will be lucky to win in Westmount and the West Island-traditional Liberal strongholds. In Ontario he is toast. Anypoint west of Ontario??The Libs won't even get a seat.
This election will probably produce results like the last one. A majority Conservative government might be possible as well as the Liberals are imploding and will do even worse then they thought this time around thanks to Dion and his gas tax plan. They should have kept Chretien, he was one slick politician, if he was still there the Liberals would probably still be in office.

Are You Better Off Now Than You Were Four Years Ago?
Posted: 8/27/2008 10:44:59 PM
Ok this question worked for Reagan like thirty years ago. You think it's going to work now for Obama/Bidden???I'm sure Obama might try it out, but I have my doubts. All McCain has to do is answer, "Remember what party originally asked that question? " He could not ask for a better line in a debate if he wrote Obama's questions himself. He could also throw in "So Mister Obama, your solution is no offshore drilling and more taxes?" I'm sure we will all be better off after that. If the economy is slumping how much blame does the government really deserve..some..none..all of it?

Will it be Obama-Biden or McCain-Romney? Which states and voting blocs will matter?
Posted: 8/27/2008 1:04:37 AM
Ok here's my 2 cents.
McCain/Romney will win in November . By more then most people think. Why? A bunch of reasons...
1)Polls: They are not the end all be all of things, but they are an important tool and do tell a story. Obama started the summer off like ahead by double digits, since then hes sunk to a tie with McCain. Meaning Hilary supporters are going to McCain--he is getting the working class Reagan dems that Obama needs. Obama will have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to get them back.
2) Bidden is not anyone who will help Obama get the votes he needs. Bidden is boring and a known quality to anyone who cares enough to look into it. Most people don't care enough and I don't blame them. He will not add passion to the ticket.
3) Even though most hard core Republicans don't like McCain they will hold their noses and vote for him anyways, because they don't want Obama as President.
4)Issues: What are people most concerned with nowadays? The economy-gas prices. Its irrelevant that the Government does not control them, they will be the scapegoat. McCain says offshore drilling has to happen. Obama says no it doesn't. Not sure of the exact figure but a recent poll says around 77% of people in the US agree with McCain on this one. It will hurt Obama more then he thinks.
5)Iraq: McCain took a big risk backing the surge, now that it appears to be working and Iraq is sinking as a priority issue to most voters it will start to look like McCain was right about Iraq & Obama was wrong.
6)Romney: Adding Romney to the ticket for McCain will only help. He knows the economy backwards and forwards & people believe him about it. Obama and Bidden are like children compared to him on economic issue. If Bidden debates Romney and the economy comes up? Romney will eat him alive.
7)Swing states :Rust belt states like MI and OH will go to McCain/Romney as Romney will hit the ground running there and the people will buy what he says(does not matter if its true or not, Romney will make the sale).

Wally-Mart SUX
Posted: 8/11/2008 1:45:33 AM
Ok Wal-Mart has probably done its fair share of dirty tricks, but I don't think there is a large scale retail organization that has clean hands. We all know that Wal-Mart pays its employess as little as they can leaglly get away with, but then again most giant retail companies do the same thing nowadays. I don't think that wages are all that high at Zellers in Canada or at Targets in the US. Most of the stock in Wal-Mart originates in China? Check where the merchanidse you buy in Zellers/Target/the Christmas Tree Store originates. What is the solution to the problem(s) posed by Wal-Mart? That is what I would like to see someone post. We all know the problems. The posters who are saying that Wal-Mart is merely cashing in on peoples desire to buy cheap products are correct in pointing that out. What is to be done??

Canada ban on Perfumes
Posted: 8/11/2008 1:15:17 AM
In Ontario this does not surprise me at all. I thought that Quebec had all the dumb laws covered, but Ontario is now catching up(anti swearing laws/banning pit bulls). In regards to this one, I mean there are certain things that we have to accept when we are" in public". Some people will just smell bad or too strong naturally without perfume, cologne or deodoarants. Do they plan on ticketing these people too? Do they plan on creating a body to enforce this nonsense? Nose cops? Olificatory troopers, and what court will these cases go too? Well, this will of course mean more cops and more courts, so once again hats off Ontario. You make Quebec look good.

McCain-Obama in November , the demographics
Posted: 8/4/2008 12:50:45 AM
Just two things to add. Both are minor but might add up to a lot in the end.
One- On the US political scene a lot can happen fast, and there is now about 3 months until November. Polls number will change and numbers shift. Keep your eyes on what happens in September & October.
Two-Clustering. Who votes and where they live. Straight out polls are lousy at predicting this kind of stuff with any real accuracy. Remember Gore winning the popular vote and still losing the election?

The Dion Liberal Carbon Tax
Posted: 6/27/2008 6:01:56 AM
LoonyTunz is dead on. The Liberals have given the Conservatives a gift here. If Monsieur Dion has lots of charm and charisma and is eloquent enough in the english language, he might be able to pull this off, but his lack of charm and spoken English cripple him. This idea is merely the icing on the cake that will assure the end of his policial career. Acadien you want a tax credit for less carbon??Dream on. More then likely you will get a tax hike, even if carbon emission rates go down, sad truth of the matter is that taxes go up no matter what we do..

The Dion Liberal Carbon Tax
Posted: 6/24/2008 4:22:48 AM
I think this is a bad idea from the Liberals and Monsieur Dion especially. I really find it unacceptable that with all their so called "smarts" and "big brains" that this is what kind of ideas they come up with to fight climate change/global warming. A tax on people to make them pay more??? That is what they have up their sleeves???More taxes????????They seem to be saying that the only solution to the climate problem is taxing the people more and making them pay more? Are we not taxed enough?? You would figure that this would be a chance for the Liberals to show some original thinking now and maybe come up with a new idea or two, no, they would just raise taxes. Nothing new or original there. This idea is a non starter and will pretty much end Dions' career and if they try to sell it to the public in an election, they will find a hestitant consumer.

Martian Ice Discovered
Posted: 6/22/2008 10:54:51 PM
Bush in his sat radio message, stated the US had given oil permits to drill on Mars to Exxon.

I think we are going to hear a lot more about this......

Are you serious???Laughing. Does the US own Mars??It can give permissions to drill there?? I do not think Bush is dealing with a full deck on this one for many reasons.

Senate proves Bush lied us into war.
Posted: 6/17/2008 4:31:45 AM
Ianmac, I agree with you on the fact that this topic is about the lies spoken by Bush and his cronies that they used to justify the invasion and occupation of Iraq. I think that there exists now a consensus that lies were told, i.e. that there were weapons of mass Destruction in Iraq (Colin Powell's UN speech, many of Bush's speeches). As well as that there were connections between Al Queada and Iraq, (again go take a look at what Rumsfeld and Bush said), that Iraq was a vital front in the war on Terror. Again, most agree that Bush lied, but nothing new there, Presidents lie all the time, as many have cited here Clinton lied about his escapades with Monica. FDR might have fudged the truth, LBJ lied about the Golf of Tonkin. JFK lied probably more then Clinton about his sexual escapades. Presidents lie no matter what party they are in. But I think the important question is why did Bush lie about the invasion of Iraq?? Why did he want it to happen so bad?? Was there a demand that Iraq be invaded??

Go Leafs Go! 2007-08 Season!

Well at least now that the Leafs have the old coach from San Jose, I am sure that they will now be contenders for the Cup right??? Ba ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!! Like that will happen. Yet another loser joins their ranks. I am sure all the losers already there will recognize a kindred spirit. Truly where he belongs....

Wasn't it Churchill who said that the first casualty of war is truth? This definitely seems to be the case here. Bush lied? Rumsfeld lied? Cheney lied?? Blair lied??Are we surprised really??

Bill C-61 aka. the CDMCA
Posted: 6/16/2008 9:04:01 PM
This bill conatins many sweeping provisions. I mean its agruably a major change/overhaul to the entire Canadian legal system. Enforcing all these rules will become a nightmare for existing law enforcement agencies who have their hands full fighting traffic violations. Well they create a new police agency charged with digital copyright enforcement?? Will all the major police forces in Canada now have to create a special digital violations unit? Did any consumer group seriously want this new set of rules??? Was there a demand for it?? I seriously doubt that anything good will come out of this...

Should i write the things I don't like about women?
Posted: 6/11/2008 1:06:32 AM
This is interesting. I am just curious as why to a lot of women will post lists -some big and some small-of their dislikes and dealbreakers and have a massive amount of restrictions on their profile. Its rare that men will do that. Are men just more accepting?? We all have our likes/dislikes but I always thought that finding out what they are is what makes things interesting when you get to know someone.
