Speed of light.......... just something about it.....
Posted: 11/16/2009 7:18:26 AM
It's not really a physical connection between objects, it's space-time itself around the objects.

As Einstein theorized, it is not just space, but time as well. Space & Time are together as one, called Space-Time. If you warp space my moving through it quickly, you warp time as well. Time in this sense has nothing to do with clocks, but rather the atoms that make you up. Everything slows down as it takes more and more energy to keep you going at that speed. The laws of physics stop us from being able to move that quickly within the vacuum, but maybe one day we'll find a way around space & time to move faster than light and arrive at places long before light can even make it there.

The Angel of Death...
Posted: 10/6/2009 8:58:03 PM
I don't see no angel of death. Death, as in the cloaked skeleton with a sythe apparently didn't arise until around the time the black plague broke out. It was some way to explain the death all around I guess. . .

It looks odd but I think he was just hit so hard, and in such a way that he didn't know where he was, what happened, and reflexes went crazy, pretty much a big seizure.

Show someone on death row who has no remorse for any murders he did start to freak out at something that doesn't appear to be there, cry, ask for forgiveness and then suddenly die. That would be a odd to see, and leave one questioning what happened there.

Words to The God!
Posted: 9/19/2009 6:47:42 AM
Here I found the text online:

3They said to each other, “Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
6The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
8So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9That is why it was called Babel†—because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

I didn't read the entire wall of text I was presented with, but I noticed at the beginning you're saying God didn't think we'd be so divided. The funny thing about that is, and I get this right from a bible I read:

I'm not quoting anything because I don't remember the exact lines, but it went something like this:

Man kind had come together in Unity worshiping God, all speaking one language, and having one religion. They wanted to build a grand tower to reach God, and began construction. When they were nearly done, God came down to see them, and what they have done, he said "Together they can accomplish anything like us, we cannot allow them to be like us". God destroyed the tower, and separated the people in different nations, giving them different languages to confuse each other.

I pretty much stopped reading the bible after that, wondering Wtf is this about? Who is this God, and why did he mention "We" as in more than one -- the same thing that was said in the Adam & Eve story when Adam ate from the tree of knowledge. That went something like "he ate from the tree of knowledge, and now can have knowledge, we cannot allow him to eat from the tree of life or he will live forever like us".

Birth of solar system / star questions
Posted: 9/3/2009 5:50:58 PM
So to get back on topic, the OP wonders what starts off a star from a ball of gas, what causes it to become a star, and what makes the planets take shape. I believe I answered the Star part in the first post I made before it went to big bang/early universe discussions.

As for planets, Nebulas come from the destruction of much more massive stars that lived and died. These large clouds gather and begin spinning in one general direction as gravity brings things together. Once things begin moving, they kind of drag everything else with it causing the entire system to spin.

The heaviest part would likely become the Center, and also be where the star is formed. Massive amounts of gas (mostly hydrogen, and some heavier elements that started the core off) come together like a snowball rolling down a hill and becoming more massive. The core heats to millions of degrees from the pressure alone, until it reaches a breaking point in which the pressure is SO great, that 2 atoms of Hydrogen get close enough to Fuse. Once that happens, the core heats to millions of degrees as massive amounts of energy are released, and that in turn kicks off the Nuclear Fusion Process.

During this process (Before nuclear fusion kicks off), surrounding matter also clumps together. Chunks of rock and metal float around, and at very high speeds, they collide. This causes extreme heat, and melting. It also causes chunks to grow larger and attract more rocks. Some rocks just clump together so much that the pressure alone melts the core, and compresses it. Some eventually turn into rocky planets like Mars, others attract massive amounts of gas and become like Jupiter, or Neptune, Uranus, or Saturn (saturn appears to have a surface, but has a gassy atmosphere).

These processes basically clean up the space, planets collect all rock in their paths, and clean it, gas planets take most gas that is left in the outer system, and maybe even more gas when the Star Ignites Fusion.

Once the star actually ignites nuclear fusion, solar wind pushes everything else out (except for the heavier astroid/comet belts). and cleans up shop. Now you have a star, and planets surrounding them.

Birth of solar system / star questions
Posted: 9/2/2009 3:04:12 PM
To my knowledge, there is a lot of Hydrogen gas in space. After the "big Bang" it is one of the primary forms of matter that was created, and there is still a LOT of it floating around.

This hydrogen came together via gravity in large cloud systems, and I mean HUGE. They created not just stars, but entire galaxies.

The gas forms into a ball, which grows more and more like a snowball. Gravity is created by mass, and the more mass it builds up, the more it attracts. It creates so much friction from the extreme weight and power of gravity trying to crush it, that the core heats up to thousands of degrees, and it begins to glow, but it is not yet a star. It may look like a large glowing Jupiter (but maybe a few times bigger).

Eventually, enough mass comes together and the extreme pressure kicks off something in the super heated core. Nuclear Fusion begins, and the ball of mass suddenly jumps to millions of degrees and becomes a new Star. It fuses hydrogen into Helium, and when it runs out of hydrogen, it fuses helium into heavier elements. ALL elements around you came from the Cores of stars, calcium in your bones, iron in your blood. Iron everywhere came from stars.

Large stars explode and create Nebulas, which contain all the heavier elements, and left over hydrogen, and this forms a new Generation star, which comes together, and with all the heavy elements floating around, planets can also come together around it. This creates a solar system.

It is thought that large deposits of Iron, and even heavier elements came from Super Novas (Very Large stars Exploding violently)

If you ever heard the term "We are made of star dust" It's True.

26 dimensions?

I thought String Theory theorized 11 dimensions, but then again I'm not too up to date on that. As for dimensions curling up on themselves or being compacted to very small scales, I'm not even sure how that works, it seems to defy logic.

Do they know what kind of dimensions they are? Spacial/Temporal/ some other unknown kind.

Well just out of speculation, does anyone have any ideas on how another dimension could possibly behave? The ones we know appear to build on one another. I just don't have a clue how the next step up could go.

You have length, then add another line and you have width, now add a third line for depth, and that's 3 dimensions built on one another. The next one is Time, which pretty much gives things the ability to move and change from point to point within the 3 dimensions.

try to make the speculation at least somewhat realistic.

Maybe the 5th dimension is a branch off from Time, showing all possible outcomes or directions that time can go (based on choices/how things work out, etc..). I really can't imagine how a 4th Spacial Dimension could go, since we can already seemingly move in all directions, where else is there to go? Of course I'm sure a "flat lander' would say the same thing if he can only perceive left and right, and has the ability to move both left or right -- where else is there for him to go?

No, Time is not a Spacial Dimension. It flows in one way, and we currently don't have much evidence that suggests we could go backwards in time.

1D = Left and Right, there is no other way.

2D = Left, Right, Up and Down, there is no other way

3D = Left, Right, Up, Down, and Depth, there is no other way

4D = Time, not a spacial dimension. Flows forward only

5D = ? Good luck imagining that.

Small black holes would kill you before you got in

Super Massive ones are the way to go if you want to attempt to jump inside out of curiosity. The gravity gradient would be spread out over such a huge distance that you should be able to make it inside the event horizon before dying inside. Depends how it is inside, maybe you could free fall for a while, but I'm sure either the singularity, or massive amounts of radiation inside would cook/kill you.

Time may be so slow for you, that as you pass through you look up to see the universe on fast forward. Once you pass the event horizon, you probably wouldn't see anything but distorted light coming in and getting trapped with you. You'd have to turn your attention to the center and see what's there.

Super Black Hole Question
Posted: 8/27/2009 11:45:32 AM
Super massive black hole mergers would probably be no different than stellar mass black hole mergers. They'd spin in orbit around one another, going faster and faster as they get closer, probably releasing turbulent gravitational waves and gamma rays if matter is caught in the mix too. One would eventually consume the other, and it would be relatively quiet (no giant explosions from the black holes themselves).

It's not like some stars which collide and cause a supernova destroying both of them. Black holes apparently do explode though. If they evaporate for billions of years without consuming any new matter, eventually they'll reach some critical point I guess where there is no longer enough matter to keep the singularity together, and all of that energy suddenly explodes.

Well this thread was a misfire. Maybe I should have waited before typing everything I was thinking about. I'll try to fix it:

I was just thinking that we cannot possibly think of trying to explore space or leave the earth unless we learn how to mimic the complex systems we rely on to survive. The entire solar system and planet is like a giant ship with 2 force fields, a long lasting energy source, and a planet that produces everything we need on it's own. (the sun's solar wind, and Earth's magnetic field are the 2 shields we have from harmful radiation coming from outside the solar system).

If the Earth ever blew up, or If we were ever cut off from the earth, and Nature, could science alone keep us alive? I don't think it would be as simple as some people think. Even if we created a large ship with long lasting nuclear power source, and plants to create oxygen and food, we could still be killed off easily. A storm of radiation could kill all plants and even some people, a disease could spread without a cure (we find a lot of remedies in nature from plants or animals, that wouldn't be possible in space). There's also possible psychological issues that could come up from being isolated on a ship away from Earth.

There are just a lot of things we take for granted on this planet. We're tied to it in so many ways that it's hard to think of how we could ever survive without it

A lot of inventions and other things come from studying nature. Something as simple as the flight of a bird has given us the ability to create airplanes by studying how they fly.

A lot of things have been designed by nature, and then taken by us in an attempt to mimic it. There are a lot of complex systems, including the entire system of life that starts from the core of the sun. We rely on this planet to survive. A tree is taken for granted by all, but when you really look at it, we need them to survive. Trees convert sunlight into chemical energy, they produce oxygen, they enrich soil, they shelter us, feed us, and from them we can create wood, paper, syrup, medicines, dies, and various other products.

Do you really think the Human race can possibly survive without this planet? Even if we design a spaceship, and a more efficient way to harness energy from the sun, can we really live in space? We rely on the planet to survive biologically, and even if we could create a robotic body, with a circuit board brain of some kind to break free of the reliance we have of the Earth, of biological food, oxygen, and shelter, could we live on?

Our biological brains alone are designed by nature, and are extremely complex already. They can grow, evolve, and learn on their own with no additional programming. Our brains can perform more actions than even the worlds largest super computer (at the moment, but one day computers will surpass us). Considering how long our brains have been around, and how advanced they are, I think we have a LOT more to learn about Mother Nature before we even consider leaving this planet.

More computer power in your head than a super computer, and yet no cables, no interference from magnets, and most of all, Very low power consumption. I picture future technology as using no more power than a plant would. A TV can be a small device that interfaces in some way with you brain, and gives it the information to generate the images and sound it has to offer. The brain already has that power, as well as the power to create the illusion of sound, even without external stimuli. These devices could work with small amounts of chemical energy gathered from the sun, and use something similar to neurons in our brains to transmit data.

How did you escape from the monster in your dreams ?
Posted: 8/15/2009 4:49:00 PM
I can only remember 2 monsters ever chasing me in dreams when I was younger.

1 of them I didn't get a look at, it was very dark and I was overcome with fear. I was running from something, but did not know what, I did not have time to look back. I focused on what was in front of me, a hall way, which lead to a "T" and on the left or right there was a door outside. I ran to the left which seemed to be the shortest path, and ran outside in the summer time, but slide as if I had my no-grip boots on in the winter.

That scared me even more as I couldn't seem to get moving on the ice, but it looked like dry concrete in the summer. I had to get away, so I finally got some momentum and slid off, then woke up. Never had that dream ever again.

Second dream was a blob-like monster chasing me, and I just lead it in circles continuously. I run inside, go to the window, let it catch up, jump out the window and wait for it to come out, then run back inside and do it again until I woke up.

Entropy and the expanding observable universe
Posted: 8/14/2009 8:52:46 PM
if I understand the original question right, you're asking if this "loss" in energy over time, known as increasing entropy is what makes up "dark matter/energy" (stuff we can't directly detect).

Assuming that was the question, I would say no. Dark Matter/Energy are a observable as something physically being there, but undetectable. It seems to be part of the universe just like we are, and would also suffer the same increase in entropy. Things over time decay, they rust, they lose their ability to be reused and recycled. Energy is constantly being lost in systems mostly as heat, and that has an effect.

A good example I seen on the show "The Universe" is coal from a BBQ. It stores lots of chemical energy, and can be burned and burned again, but that energy gets used up, and it's entropy increases. It eventually loses the ability to keep a fire going, it has nothing left to burn, it pretty much becomes useless. Stars which re-use matter and burn for long periods of time will eventually die out and there will be nothing left to burn anywhere -- all stars will die out.

As entropy increases, things fall apart, stars have burnt out, and eventually galaxies, cold remnants of solar systems, and even matter itself will fall apart. All that will be left near the end are black holes, but they too will decay over time, and the universe will be no more. I'm sure dark matter/energy will follow the same fate as everything else in the universe.

Is it even possible to have a free society?
Posted: 8/10/2009 5:47:48 AM

The only way this could be achieved is if every single person on the planet was completely selfless and ethical. Even if you could put togther a community of people that live ethically, never commit crimes, share everything, and care for eachother that community could exist free of all laws. BUT eventually someone else who doesnt share that mentality is going to come in and just conquer them. And history is written.

I don't think they would be conquered if they can fight for their freedom, and the resulting violence would strengthen their beliefs in peace. Of course in our society, we can have a horrible world war that should have been the War to end all wars, then have another world war almost 40 years later, within the lifetime of a single person.

You'd need a lot of luck to try and catch it with a handheld camera. The best way I can think of is to use a Video camera that constantly rolls, then put the video on a computer. FRom there you can take any of the frames and save it as a picture.

This thread is hard to follow...

I'll talk about some things that I did manage to pick out of it:

Traveling above the earth in circles isn't what makes time move slower for you. It's the act of moving quickly -- it can be done on the surface, in orbit, in space -- anywhere. The faster you move, the slower time physically moves for you. You wouldn't notice a clock moving slowly, because you too would be slowed down, so everything would appear normal.

As for these weird examples of popping into an alternate universe inside a version of yourself -- that would be ethically wrong. It may look like you, but that person is an entirely different entity in an entirely different universe. You have no right to harm them or change them in any way.

As for how exactly one would move to another reality, it would probably have to be done with some kind of worm hole or portal. Apparently there was an experiment which was suppose to create a microscopic black hole which would evaporate quickly, and leave a small wormhole which connects to a newly formed "baby universe". This universe would expand within ours, connected only by this wormhole which would exist for only a fraction of a second, then collapse forever cutting us off from this new universe which would expand on it's own in another dimension.

Time
Posted: 8/2/2009 10:13:46 AM

Enough with God and doubting the existence of a greater being. The dialogue that I want to star is one about time traveling. Let's say that in reality you really cannot build a time machine, it could be only theoretically done. But there is a loophole in this question and that would be time portals. Physics from what I've read shows a strong inclination towards time frames. There are many time frames moving at once, they are called by the names of realms, dimensions, universes, it's something we do not yet fully comprehend. In one time frame I can theoretically be very poor and in another I can be very rich and in another I would not exist at all. What if there are anomalies in this world that cannot be seen through the naked eye, but exist? These anomalies what they do is connect each universe to one; sort of like a central hub. I believe there are many facts all around us but we don't see, and those that see it, use it....I wanted to start this thread because I once spoke to a man who told me something that makes me think everyday, it goes something like this I can't really remember it completely "the wisest man is not the one who wishes for power, riches or even wisdom itself, the wisest man is only he who wishes to see"

I think you're confusing time with alternate realities/universes.

There are some theories that suggest there could be completely different "Parallel universes", all slightly different from one another. If you were somehow able to travel to one, you may notice very little change, and in others, you may notice significant changes, or it may even be unrecognizable. Some may even be so close you won't notice anything at all.

As for Time itself, there is a physical thing in our universe that we call "Time". It has nothing directly to do with clocks or days/weeks/years -- those are just ways we invented to measure our passage through time on Earth. Time itself is relative, it's different for each mass. The faster you move through the universe, the slower time moves for you. If you managed to reach the speed of light, time would no longer have meaning to you.

As mentioned above, an experiment proving that time slows down with speed was done with very accurate clocks. One was placed on a plane going very quickly, and the other was placed on the ground, stationary. When the 2 clocks which were once in sync were compared -- the one on the plane was behind by a few milliseconds. That may not seem like much, but it definitely is a difference.

If you were in a ship moving 99% of speed of light, you would be moving VERY slowly in time. Time on earth would continue on, and years would pass by as they normally do. You would not notice a thing. Time in your view is moving normally because your clock, your body, your brain -- everything is affected by the slow passage of time. You see seconds ticking by, you get up to have come coffee, you wait just 10 minutes and then slow your ship down. You return to Earth and you're now 1000 years in the future.

It has nothing to do with the clock itself, it too is an entity which was slowed down by time just like you.

How do you think it will happen?
Posted: 7/6/2009 3:40:05 PM
We will never last as long as the Universe. When it dies out, the entire existence of humans would have been an insignificant spec of time -- and that's if we manage to evolve, survive, and move into space and advance a lot.

Right now we're in a stable universe, lots of stars, lots of energy. Eventually star nurseries will die out and no new stars will ever form. After than the remaining stars will slowly burn out and cool off. After the billions and billions of years, if we're still alive, the last remaining "Red Dwarf" stars will die off, leaving us with dead cores of stars. We may still be able to syphon some energy from these dead stars, but if we cannot find a way to create a new universe or move to another one -- we will die out.

Trillions of years go by and the universe lingers on in darkness, getting slower and colder. Black holes eventually eat up everything and start devouring one another. Eventually time and space move extremely slowly, and the entire time span from when the black holes started consuming matter to the time span it takes to finally evaporate the last black hole into nothing would probably be 100 or more times longer than the entire age of the universe before that period.

Just like human existence until now is a blink of time compared the the Sun -- the entire time humans can possibly exist would be a blink compared to the entire time the Universe will linger on.

Even if we somehow took black holes and found some way to get energy -- the matter that makes us up would eventually fall apart. There is no stopping the death of the human race. We would be extremely lucky to live long enough to witness one of the final stages of the universe's life. Our fate will probably be from an asteroid, or our own wars.

What is the correct way of pronouncing 2009?
Posted: 6/23/2009 3:15:02 PM
People like to simplify things

1909 "Nineteen O' Nine" is actually just breaking it into 2 parts basically "19" for the "1900s" and "09" for the actual year in the 1900s.

1901, 1909, 1917, 1943, 1969, 1980, 1999. . lot of stuff happened during those 1900s

Now we go into the future, and it sounds cool to go from saying "Nineteen" to "two thousand". It also just doesn't sound right to say "twenty o' 1" because of syllables and such. Once we get to the 10th year, then it will sound better to break it into 2 parts again : 2010 "twenty ten", 2012 "twenty twelve"

I bet it will continue for some time 2030, 2043, 2069, 2099 until we get to year 3000. Then people (if we're still alive) will probably say "three thousand". That just assumes language doesn't change drastically during all that time.

Did You Ever Have a Dream In Which You Knew You Were Dreaming?
Posted: 6/5/2009 12:27:54 AM
My dreams are NEVER indistinguishable from reality -- but somehow when in them I cannot tell the difference. Logic has no meaning.

I've had lucid dreams, where I realized I was dreaming, but that was when I was a younger. I could stop the process and do whatever I wanted. Nowadays if I ever know or acknowledge that a dream is in fact "a dream" (while still in it) I can't seem to do anything to change it. The acknowledgment seems to be a part of the dream, and it still plays out the way it was suppose to.

For instance, take Hell: you will be tortured, tormented, burned alive, and suffering brutally for all eternity. That's quite scary to a Human. The fact that so many brutal tortures existed all throughout history, especially the middle ages probably helped to put fear in being burned alive or tortured, nevermind for eternity.

Heaven is often described as being warm, with green fields, maybe fruit trees, lots of food, water, loved ones all sitting around calmly to welcome you to the house of God where you will be at peace forever.

The fact of the matter is: These are human desires/fears. When I die, I won't have a body anymore, so why should I fear any sort of torture, mutilation, or burning? On the flip side, why would I care for beautiful calm scenery, fruits, or any other human desire?

There has also been other things I've heard about the "other side". There is no hell, it is a place identical to the Earth where the weather is always calm, never storming. Every animal, every person, every structure that has ever been built (like stonehenge) still exists as if it was just completed.

This view of Paradise has so many conflicts it just doesn't make sense to me. How can it possibly be accepted?

I realize some people lose loved ones, and can't cope with it, so they need/want to believe they aren't dead, and I can't 100% say that there absolutely is NO life after death, but so far I cannot accept any view put forth by devout believers. It is my opinion that even if some sort of place exists, you still die forever as this "Spirit" leaves your body, it is it's own entity with the added experience of your life to it's own experience, and lifetime of knowledge of past lives lived, and the life in the spirit realm. Everything that makes you "you" is gone.

Do animals have emotions?
Posted: 5/27/2009 10:56:34 PM
I dont understand how anyone can question if animals have feelings, unless you don't know what feelings are yourself.

A common feeling among people is fear, animals can show fear.

I had a Rottie, and he as afraid of thunder. If a storm started, and I was home, my door would bust open and he'd come lay down in my room during the storm, I could tell he feared the loud sound of thunder, along with the flashes of lightning. He knew something was happening, but felt safer in my room both because I'm there and because it's more confined than the open living room or kitchen.

My cat gets scared if I pick him up and walk toward the bathroom (he associated the washroom with water/baths which he hates). He'll also get scared if I walk towards the door and open it, he doesn't like the outside. (kinda weird for a cat).

Even the Rat I own gets scared. Scared of heights mostly, if you push him on a smooth table, sliding him towards an edge, he'll desperately kick his feet trying to back up, and try to turn around and grab your hand, trying to pull himself away.

Absolute or situational ethics?
Posted: 5/23/2009 11:16:04 PM
I don't believe in absolute anything.

Things are very dynamic, and may require different approaches. In the case of Ethics, you must do what you feel is right in a given situation. Stealing is wrong, and under normal circumstances, not ethical. Letting a baby starve to death is extremely unethical, as it cannot save itself, it depends on you. Even though you must break a law, you're doing it for the greater good. The baby has limited time to live, so based off the circumstances, I would steal without any moral guilt.

Besides, I could make up for a theft, I could get money at a later date, or do something. What I could not do is make up for the death of an innocent baby. It depended on me to live, and I would have failed it. Under the circumstances, stealing would not be considered a moral choice -- letting the baby die through inaction would be the only concern.

I don't think it would be something to worry about, unless it could somehow harm a cat. So far my cat seems alright.

Do animals have emotions?
Posted: 5/22/2009 9:51:37 PM
most animals feel emotion, and are "self aware", just not the same as us Humans are.

They are aware of themselves, they can feel pain, sense stuff, and they have feelings/emotions. Some animals can even get depressed. Take a kitten for example, if it's taken away from it's mother too early, some kittens get horribly depressed, and sit motionless. They've lost the will to live, and will sit there until they die from starvation or something else.

Cats (as they seem to be a good example) can also feel Betrayed, and angry. You develop a bond with a cat if you take care of it, and if you do something to hurt it, it could forever break the bond. The cat would turn on you in an instant, and will never be safe to keep around as it will hate you, and attack you. Cats would have to be put down in these cases.

Even a lion can do the same, an Elephant can feel anger towards individuals who mean it or it's young harm, and it will never forget.

Are you raising your kids to be dependent, helpless, and fearful?

Rules are necessary for society to function, whether they are Punishable Laws, or unwritten.

Rules need to be looked at carefully, there are far too many made that just make life more difficult. There should be Rules that, if broken, are punishable to a certain extent, such as drinking and driving. Only the person who committed the offense should be punished, not any bar or liquor store that may have served them.

Even in industrial workplaces there are constant rules being made for "Safety" which are basically written in stone, and must apply to any and all situations. Someone stupidly cuts themselves with a Utility Knife, then Ban ALL of those knives for everyone, to avoid further injuries. The way it SHOULD work is: Have everyone be aware of the situation, and the danger of using such tools. They sign off legally, and use them at their own risk.

Even courts and legal rules seem to be stupid, such as not being able to harm someone who is breaking into your house. Nope, you must remain helpless, and risk losing everything, including your life until the proper authorities arrive. If you take action to immobilize the invader, he can charge you legally. That is BS, there should be rights, there should be punishments -- but they should NOT be written in stone. Situations are extremely diverse and need to be judged accordingly, not by a hard written rule.

In such cases, what is the point of a Judge? If there is no Human interpretation, no thought as to the specific nature of the situation, then you may as well appoint a computer to Take in information about the case, and judge it based on the rules it knows. Well, both are human, so they have rights. One broke in to a house but didn't manage to do anything harmful, so he will be doing some community service before being set free, while the home owner who assaulted and physically injured the other human will be charged 10, 000 on top of all medical costs.

Why try and stop extinction?
Posted: 5/10/2009 7:40:49 AM
Self preservation. We do not wish to die as a race or as individuals. Well I'm sure some are an exception, but in general we do not.

We're self-aware and more conscious of our life, and therefore of the prospect of death. This enforces our will to survive.

ah, I guess it did survive. It wasn't looking good when I first posted it.

The technology is being designed more for mind reading, as in bringing up a picture of what you're looking at, or thinking of, but if such technology is refined enough it may do more. Being able to record dreams would be cool, but I wonder how much it could record, or if you'd want to even see it.

Apparently everyone dreams, you just have absolutely no recognition of the experience. Other dreams you do remember, however vaguely. Maybe there is a reason you don't remember what you saw/experienced in those dreams that you have no conscience recognition of.

time?
Posted: 5/10/2009 7:27:11 AM
I doubt he meant that so literally, but you never know lol

As far as I know he knew time was real, or at least a physical part of the universe. What he may have been referring to is the fact that time is relative. This may cause what seems like an illusion in many cases.

Our measurement of time is not "time" as scientists refer to. Our measurement of time is simply a method of organization. We measure a year by one revolution around our star, one day as the rotation of our planet. These methods of organization are consistent, and give us focus. We'll know when winter is coming, when to do certain things.

Time, as science refers to is a physical thing that does exist, but is different for everything. Time physically moves slower for someone traveling very quickly. For this reason, if you travelled at 99.99% the speed of light, you can move out to a star 30 lightyears from Earth, and come back, you'll find almost 60 years would have gone by on Earth while maybe a day passed for you. I'm not sure what the exact calculation would be, but you would experience very little time. You wouldn't even notice it going slow for you. YOu wake up, drink your coffee, watch a few movies, wonder how much longer it will be, get drunk, pass out, wake up and you're back on Earth, 60 years in the future.

The weird thing about time's relative passage to each observer is when you add light. Light travels at the speed of light (obviously). It is the ONLY thing that can travel at that speed with the possible exception of Gravity. No matter is capable of accelerating to such a speed as far as we know. If you stand still, and shine a beam of light, it will move away from you at the speed of light. Not very strange, but now lets say you're moving at 50% the speed of light, and you shine a light beam. You STILL see it move away from you at the speed of light, despite moving at half that speed yourself.

A dream recorder is already being looked into, it still needs work.

I posted a thread a while back about this thinking it was interesting, but it wasn't met very kindly by the self-appointed mods of this Forum. Despite having a URL pointing to an article, the article being on topic with what the title of the URL was, and the thread title being the same as the URL -- It was voted to be deleted for being "vague/misleading". It may have survived, I'm not sure.

Dying in a dream? That is odd. Usually before a death would occur, the person wakes up, which gives rise to the idea that dying in a dream kills you in real life. Apparently that is not the case.

Can God be challenged conversationally?
Posted: 5/4/2009 9:23:42 PM
You assume God is Omnipotent (all powerful, etc..)

I don't think being omnipotent is even possible. Knowing everything simultaneously, I'm sure there are more than a few paradoxes that can be created in such a situation. God talking to himself is pointless, even if he knows every topic throughly. It would be like you talking to yourself because you know what you're saying, what you're thinking, there is nothing to really stimulate the conversation.

It would not be like talking to a 3 year old, at least not if the individual conversing with God is somewhat intelligent.

Assuming he is a being which is extremely knowledgeable, and even able to read your thoughts, I think you could still challenge him. A God no doubt will have a level of thinking and intellect far beyond our own, but that doesn't make us worthless. I believe our level of thinking, though lower than his, can still provide some stimulating conversation. We think of a completely different level, see things differently, and can offer insight into things that a higher level of thinking otherwise would not have seen.

Could You Leave A Mark On The World?
Posted: 4/25/2009 9:46:49 PM
I seriously doubt I will leave a significant mark in the (written) history of this civilization. However while there is still time, I may leave a mark on at least 1 person's perception of the world. Not sure who it will be, I don't think I've done anything to date that can be considered great. Except that cool rhyme! No? fine then.

Well you all seem to have more interesting dreams than I ever do.

Mine never predict anything, never show me or really teach me anything. They seem to just be random and make absolutely no sense at all.

For instance:

This dream isn't recent, but I dreamt that I walked in my house, with the intent on burning it to the ground, and leaving. I set fire to the upstairs portion (which was unoccupied). I poured gas all over the floor and walls, then set it aflame. I went down and started packing as if I had it all planned out:

the fire would engulf the upstairs before burning through the floor, The time it takes for the fire to weaken the upper structure is just enough for me to grab what I need and go. So I do just that, grab a bag, and pack some water, some food, blankets, clothes, a couple knives which to me are multi-purpose tools, and some other stuff. I then put it at the back door, and went to grab the cat, and the rat.

For some reason, my single rat turned into 3 rats, which escaped the cage, and ran around avoiding my grasp. The fire started to bring down the structure, and I feared they were delaying me too much, if they refuse to be saved, I will be forced to leave them to burn. They suddenly ran to me (I guess sensing the danger), and I picked up the cat. I moved to the back door, placed the 3 rays in a cage, then grabbed the miniature deer that was sitting were my cat was.

Somehow my cat turned into a deer that was half the size the cat initially was.

Now I know such a dream seems psychotic, but I don't usually have dreams of burning anything, nor do I practice burning things in reality. It seemed to be more focussed on packing essential items and leaving in a hurry than it was about destroying anything.

~Madness~

Genetics definitely play a role. Some people can take a lot of stress and deal with it, others not so much.

Though everyone is unique, they're not that unique. Many people share similar personality traits, even among family members. A son or daughter can show similar personality traits that the mother once had, often giving the mother a clue as to how much trouble the child will be (if their mothers tell them they too were quite a handful).

I'm sure when it comes right down to it, the health of the brain is in question. Chemicals used to transfer information across the vast and complex network that is your brain are definitely what make you. Change hormones, or even limit certain chemical interactions, and you can change dramatically. You can become violent, extremely depressed, confused and anxious, nervous, all kinds of things.

Take beer for example, look how depressed it makes some people, how violent it makes others, or how stupid it makes the majority of people. What it does is stops a chemical from transmitting in your brain, either that or blocking it (not sure at the moment). Anyway, this chemical imbalance causes a lot of the side effects caused with being drunk.

Staying awake for long periods of time can have the same stress and effect on your brain, if you stayed awake long enough, you'd appear drunk.
