Why do mirrors only flip you left to right?
Posted: 9/14/2009 9:27:12 PM
As someone else said, mirrors don't flip left and right or up and down but front and back. Try this experiment. Stand in front of the mirror, point your finger to the wall on your left, which way does the finger in the mirror point? Now do the same with pointing to the right wall? Point up, which way does the finger point? now point down. Now point at the mirror, which way is the finger in the mirror pointing? in the opposite direction of yours

But it is still a leap, right?

In my view not a big leap from the standpoint that it is somewhat incomplete. But that it is incomplete does not mean it's bollix, just that we don't have all the pieces yet.

It is still a theory as we have a fact...we are here ...and someone has an explanation...creation. Wether it is the correct theory is up to supporting facts, peer review and consensus.

The fact that we are here can if anything, supports the evolution of matter into life as illustrated in the series Cosmos. The fact that we are here in no way proves we were "created". One cannot leap from "we are here" to creationism any more than evolution, though the latter isn't as big of a leap.

I think we have a story of creation, there is no evidence of actual creation, save for hearsay evidence.

Time dilation can be made simple without looking at muons...
Hell look at HELICOPTER BLADES....(or a ceiling fan.) ..notice that pattern that is moving slowly.....though the other blades are a blur.....it is because you are focusing....you are changing your frame of reference because your eyes, whether you realize it or not are trying to keep up....its a simple concept, jsut use your imaginations.

Also....last I checked all matter vibrates....very very very very very fast....x the speed of light.....stupid strings.

What you are observing with helicopter blades is a resonance between the integration time of the eye and the frequency of the blades, it has nothing to do with time dilation.

As far as matter vibrating, it does not do so anywhere near the speed of light, first, it would fly apart (the equavalent thermal temp would be hotter than the center of a star), second matter cannot travel at the speed of light, it gets infinitely heavy and third it would give off gamma radiation vibrating at that frequency, which only observe in accretion disks around black holes.

But what about an object that is vibrating at the speed of light....

Again, according to Relativity, since any object approaching the speed of light gains mass infinitely, no object with zero rest mass can obtain the speed of light meaning it could not vibrate at the speed of light. Particles under the influence of E-M waves can vibrate and quite fast. They are always subject to the equations of Relativity. If they approach c while vibrating in any given direction, you will have time dilation, length contraction and increased mass.

i am with you, the theory of relativity has not been proved with real and touchable facts apart from some dumb experiment with atomic clocks.......

I'd have to disagree with you here. Not only were those experiments with atomic clocks well designed, carried out and reproducible, but many other experiments have proven the theory of relativity. Bending of light around stars, our star, so that we see distant objects behind our sun during a solar eclipse (gravitational lensing). The slowing down of the decay rate of radioactive particles accelerated to near the speed of light proves time dilation. Radar waves sent to Venus and bounced back have been shown to slow down when passing near the sun as predicted by relativity. GPS satellites use relativistic calculations all the time, proving relativity every day. If not for these calculations, GPSs would be miles off. And not to mention the fact that every atomic weapon ever detonated proves relativity (E=mc^2).

So something approaches the speed of light approaches an infinite mass? Yes...
So if that's the case, wouldn't an engine travelling at those speeds have infinite fuel...with infinite power?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I don't know why.

Actually the answer, according to Relativity is yes. As anything approaches the speed of light it's mass increases. This happens in the same way and according to the same equations as length contraction and time dilation. So as you get nearer the speed of light, your mass increases more and more, exponentially as you get with a few percent of the speed of light. This means your inertia (resistance to acceleration) increased exponentially and you would need infinite fuel to reach the speed of light, which is impossible.

Photons get around this little problem by having zero rest mass, but then they are never really at rest.

A little off topic, but just answering your questions.

secret languauge of dating?
Posted: 8/27/2009 1:53:14 PM
From my experience nothing anyone says or does indicates sincerity until they actually meet you. I've had women favorite me, then not answer my email. I've sent women emails and had them reply with an electronic red rose card that with the words "Be Mine" printed on it only to read their message saying they are not interested. I've had them back out of dates at the last minute.

The only thing that shows real interest is when you actually meet, and even that of course is no guarantee they will meet with you again. It takes a lot of patience and a thick skin.

Good luck

Controlling guys you haven't even met

I don't know the answer to your question other than it's insecurity. But I agree with you. Many don't get that online dating is a numbers game. You have to contact many people just to get a few meetings, and even then, once you meet there's no telling it will go anywhere. If you just contact one person at a time and wait to see whee it goes, it will be a long time between dates.

I'm no POF computer expert here or anything so don't blame me if I'm wrong. I believe you can upload pictures though and choose to not view them on your profile but still be able to send them with your emails.

If you upload an image and go to your image settings there should be a little check box by it that says "show on profile." As long as you don't check that box it's my understanding that the picture stays hidden but still allows you to attach them to an email.

Hope that helps.

I did that at first, the problem is a lot of people treat that like not posting a picture at all and don't respond.

Reincarnation, from a scientific perspective
Posted: 8/26/2009 8:00:54 AM
As someone else said, certainly our molecules end up in some plants/insects which other humans then consume. But I don't think this is anywhere near what people think of when you mention reincarnation. And I don't think anything of the consciousness of the deceased is transferred to the consumer - if that's what you meant by your last statement.

Would you ever consider being in a relationship with someone who is into BDSM?
Posted: 8/26/2009 7:43:56 AM

BDSM people are not " horny" or "aroused", they just have control and power issues.

I disagree. The limited experience I've had with a couple of women into at least the bondage aspect of it showed that they were extremely aroused by it. In fact, they couldn't get aroused without it. The classic definition of a fetish.

perpetual energy and other promising inventions
Posted: 8/25/2009 3:30:15 PM

First off, I'm not a physicist, so my understanding of motors and engines is quite limited, but someone in Ottawa thinks he has stumbled onto a unique discovery:

He's created a motor that does not slow down when it produces energy, it speeds up. He's been lambasted for referring it to as a perpetual motion machine (a bit of a misnomer), but he does believe that if perfected it could be used to create vehicles and energy sources that no longer rely on oil......

There's one way to tell if he's full of it, submit it to the Nobel Committee, if it's real there's a prize with his name on it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Why are people ashamed that people will find out they are on a dating site ?

Are you not supposed to be here ?

Is there something in your profile you don't want them to know about you ?

Is something in your profile not the truth ?

I am not asking anybody specifically these questions. but these are the questions that people wonder about when people say I cannot post a pic because of my job along with wondering whether the person is attached and cheating.

It's not a matter of ashamed, just privacy. There are many things in my life I'm not ashamed of, but don't want people at work to know. It's just not their business.

It's amazing some still think we haven't gone to the moon. It reminds me of the protesters out in front of JPL when the Mars Observer was lost. They held signs claiming it was a cover up because the probe found evidence of life on mars. Of course some still believe the earth is flat, so I guess I shouldn't be so amazed. With thousands of satellites launched and inter-planetary probes launched (soon to become inter-stellar) it eludes me as to why someone would believe we couldn't reach the moon.

We stopped going to the moon because is was very expensive with little pay off. There are many element and mineral resources there, but the cost of returning large bulks of them to earth still remains prohibitive.

Anything consensual between adults is fine with me. I do think however there is a point that steps over the line, for me anyway, that's mainly when permanent damage is being done. I have dated women who like to be tied up, or spanked and I don't consider that unreasonable, but I would never hit anyone (save a light spanking), or draw blood or do anything I feel is damaging/dangerous. I won't judge what others like, but certain things are beyond my limit.

I have a question about reflections.
Posted: 8/22/2009 10:55:39 PM

So the mirrors would have to be reflective to the size of a light photon or particle. Before you would loose the reflection. That makes sense. Plus the inside of the room would need to be close to completley empty of particles. So the light could keep reflecting. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Do I have it right?

No, would not have to be reflective to the "size" of the photon, just 100% reflective to the wavelength or frequency of the photon and 100% flat. In practice, currently impossible.

Pissing on electric fences

It is possible if you are close enough so the urine stream doesn't break up, as once it does, it can't conduct a charge to the "host". There is a story on Darwin which I think is true. It happened right here in Northridge where I live. We have high voltage power lines running next to Northridge. A couple of teenagers decided on a hot summer day to practice their climbing and repelling skills on a tower. Since it was hot, they were wearing shorts and muscle shirts. At one point one of the teens took a break after climbing up onto the platform just above the high tension lines. He leaned back against the tower (his shoulder making direct contact with the metal) and decided it would be fun to pis on the line. Well he got enough of a shock that it threw him from the tower and he died in the fall. It didn't howerver, fry any of his body parts. But I disagree there is insufficient power to burn you. High voltage/amperage is a very dangerous and unpredictable thing.

I must be more lucky on here
Posted: 8/18/2009 8:22:52 PM

I always read about men sending out a lot of emails and never getting any back, that has just not been the case for me. If I send out 10 messages I usually get back 4 to 5. Maybe its bc I dont go after the stereotypical trophy girl which is: blonde, blues eyes, and rail thin. I need a woman with a booty, some curves ( no coat hangers please) and I love dark hair. Maybe I am lucky bc there are a lot of girls on here from my area which is Atlanta. While a lot of folks say you should make each first contact personal I disagree, My first contact usually says how are you, and comments about one thing on their profile. I never understood why some people say you should write a novel for a first email when it could get read-deleted. Save that for the third or fourth email.

Just thought I would share my experience.

The Science of Global Warming
Posted: 8/17/2009 9:36:09 PM

Er global warming is causes by the sun..increased sun spot activity..All the planets in the solar system are experiencing it do they have factorys and cars on them too?

The sun is getting warmer, but at a very slow rate, about 1 degree per 500 million years, so we can consider it constant It is the only significant input of energy to the planet. The sun is also the main source of energy input to the Earth. So, add green house gases like CO2 to the atmosphere, and keep the incoming energy from the sun constant and it's pretty clear what the cause is.

There is a gap in the time when scientists say a fetus can feel pain. (Between 10 and 28 weeks, depending on the study and the politics of those doing the study.) Should this be a consideration when taking into account the viability of an unborn child? For all we know it could be even earlier.

I think numbers are a poor discriminator, one death is just as bad as another.

As far as scientists saying a fetus can feel pain, I'm not sure it feels it the way we do as much as reacts to it. Be that as it may, I think 10 weeks is beyond the few week limit I was talking about.

If the measure of a human's viability is it's level of mental development, how do we measure that? As far as I know, babies do not go from non-thinking blobs of flesh to sentient beings in the space of time it takes to pass through the birth canal. Most of us do not have conscious memories of our lives before the age of 3-4 years old. Is that when life actually starts.

I was only relating what Jewish law is in the matter, actually I don't happen to agree with it. But most base their belief on some religion. And actually I can recall back to the age of 2, I have very vivid memories. My point is there is no good way to determine when an embryo actually becomes a viable human life, but I think in the first 4 weeks of pregnancy the answer is no. One could take it all the way back to sperm. One could say that all sperm are viable human life and you shouldn't be wanking off as it is murder. Some religions actually take this position.

Then, when I don't respond at all, they either complain about it in the forums () or shoot out another message telling me how rude I am. It's a double-edged sword - you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I'm not defending the rudeness, but just keep in mind men constantly put up with rejection. We do the bulk of the asking and get the lions share of the rejection. It does get frustrating. You should also keep in mind not to take it personally. Again, I'm not defending the rudeness, just explaining it. The only time I've emailed women back is when they have given me incredibly positive feedback then suddenly changed their minds at the last minute. But even then I wasn't rude, just asked what the story was. But I never got a straight answer.

the number of children aborted every year is on the level of Holocaust numbers. Even late term abortions are ridiculously higher than the number of innocent people convicted of the death penalty... Hell. Every murderer that's been executed over the last decade (Whether guilty or not.) doesn't hold a candle to the number of children thrown away in one year in just the city of Washington, DC. Only 1,171 executions have been carried out in the USA since 1976.

It doesn't make me feel better or worse, it just my belief, and not my decision. And again, embryos and fetuses, not babies. What people consider to be a human being varies usually with religion. Now I'm an atheist, but most Christians consider it human at the moment of conception, in the Jewish religion I was taught it's not human until the crown of the head passes out of the mother. This was probably to allow the mother's life to take precedence over the babies. So who's religion do we go with if that's the approach you want to take?

Personally I believe it is human when the brain the baby is sufficiently developed for thought processes to go on. But even this cannot be determined from a time standpoint as we have no way to read a mind. I'm reluctant to define it further than that. Each fetus differs in development. I just hold to my belief that it's the woman's choice, with some input from me if she were my wife, but still ultimately her body, her choice.

"Unread and deleted" is even worse. That's why when I send an email I delete it from my sent box right away. So I don't see what happens to it. I figure if she's interested she'll get back to me and if not....
I actually also prefer if someone isn't interested they not reply at all. That's just me. Even saying "thanks but I don't think we're a match" get's old I think we're a good match. I've thought of putting in my profile not to respond at all if you're not interested, but I think this would be too negative.

have absolutely no problem with the wholesale slaughter of 100% innocent children through abortion.

First using the term wholesale slaughter, at least in this country is a bit overboard. Despite the fact that abortion is technically legal in this country, there are large areas, especially the mid-west and south where anti-abortionists have shut down the clinics that provide, among other health services, abortions. For a large number of poor people who don't have the means to travel to another state, abortion is not available. I don't think there is a wholesale number of abortions going on.

Secnodly, in my view, abortion in the early stages, first few weeks , is not slaughtering an innocent child , but terminating a potential human. There isn't anywhere near a fully developed brain so there is no personality, no individuality, no consciousness. Many pregnancies terminate naturally at this point due to some problem, does that mean god/nature is guilty of murder? I think it's a woman's choice whether to deliver or not. If there is a god, it's her decision to deal with the consequences, not ours.

As far as later term abortions go, these are only done when it's a choice between the mother's life and the child's life. I don't think any woman carries a child for 6, 7 or 8 months and then decides to abort it. And if were my choice between the life that was already in the world (my wife) and the life that is not yet in the world (the child she's carrying) I would choose my wife.

People are not sentenced to death for jay walking and i personally feel is should only be used when it is a clear case. I don't know if we have the technology for that yet but i think we are heading in the right direction. ....

Doesn't much matter what you're (falsely) accused of, if you're dead. And as an atheist, what the bible says is of little meaning to me.

Unless we can read minds I don't think we'll ever have the technology to prove guilt in ALL cases. There will always be a case that is on the edge. But who decides what's a clear case and what isn't. There lies the problem. The only solution is to not put anyone to death.

How do you feel about the many innocent people that have been put to death via mistakes even in the days of genetic evidence. Shortly before the election, Illinois suspended the death sentence because the discovered 10 innocent people were executed. That is why I am against it. You can never be 100% sure in all cases.

There is a lot of behavior online that I don't understand. Initial very positive replies followed up by static. Agreeing to meet only to cancel at the last minute for some inane reason. Now I don't mean to imply only women do this, but of course I only contact women. All I can say is I think there are a lot of nice people on the site and it's a numbers game. Fifteen emails is not very much. I've been on almost a year and sent out hundreds. I've met a few nice women whom I've dated for a while, but it didn't work out for various reasons. Just hang in there, you'll will be pleasantly surprised sooner or later.

I've had this happend to me. I agree with notoldseasoned. There are all sorts of reasons this can happen. Only the person can tell you, and unfortunately event they don't always give you the truth. It's just one of the things we have to put up with when we decide to put ourselves out there.

Where would the planes go

If the Earth disappeared, magically, the atmosphere would no longer be held by the Earth's gravity and would dissipate into space, along with the planes. They would remain in orbit around the sun in the vacuum of space where no one could hear you scream.

But my favourite thing in science to date, would have to be the double slit experiment......

The real interesting thing about that is it works exactly the same way for particles (e.g. electrons) proving the dual nature of matter and energy, and even if only one electron is fired at the slit at a time...as if the one electron knows about both slits, not that is fascinating!

Is there a limit to what we can learn and understand ?

Interesting question. Does that assume we won't someday artificially increase our capacity? If not, the limits could be unbounded.

Sorry, couldn't follow your entire post. But I'm an atheist and believe the human body and mind are simply a very sophisticated machine/computer, organically based.
