REAL MADRID the best club in the 20 century
Posted:

Dear Viscabarca,
I'm sorry to interfere here, but, even though I'm not from Spain, I still have the right to root for Real Madrid. It's a long story that started in the 1st half of the 80s. I used to support Barcelona too, but my support for this team diminished in 1985 when they lost to Steaua on penalty kicks in Sevilla, unable to score 1 single penalty to Ducadam. Believe me or not, I couldn't completely forgive Barsa, just couldn't... The way they'd qualified for that final was honorable, but they just couldn't get it done. In 1992 Koeman finally helped win it for Barsa with one of his famous shots and that made me glad. But for reasons I really can't explain I became a die-hard Real fan, able to remain sleepless on such days when Eindhoven or Milan or Torino stole it from my team.
I do believe you are a nice guy and all this bickering is rather facetious. For after visiting both Madrid and Barcelona in 1996 I found both places rather warm and hospitable, friendly and peaceful. I just can't imagine Spain torn into pieces, it breaks my heart. Please live in peace!

Milan beat real madrid badly (5:0) in the 80s and that leaves a sour taste in the mouths of Real's fans, something that was hardly assuaged when Madrid crushed Milan 5:1 in Italy in a friendly tournament in the late 90s, I believe.
But still even the fact that such unrivalled players as Zidane, Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy played for RM, and now Ronaldo does, means a lot for the timeless reputation of this club of long standing.

Chest hair is dreaded? Tastes differ
So many gentle gorgeous women are fond of hairy-chested men!
I have a rather hairy chest and have noticed women looking sexily at me whenever my shirt betrays it. But like I said, tastes differ. Some could like skinny short-haired women, others would go for large-boned long-haired women
As far as nose and ear hair, it's something you've got to deal with the same way you do when you take a shower and cut your fingernails and shave your armpits.

Help needed: English grammar issue
Posted:

Pedro,
I am ABSOLUTELY sure we CAN'T say:
"They HAVE switched on the lights AT 5 today."
This is as axiomatic as that the sun rises in the east.
If time is specified, we can't say HAVE here. I wonder if it's the same in Spanish.
No offence here, but I'd rather let you know about it now than let you make this mistake in the future.

Help needed: English grammar issue

I was 7 years old when I started to learn English and it was British English. At the age of 20 I moved to the US and gradually succumbed to their slur and twang and the simplicity of their way of speaking the language. But in my heart I'll always be fond of British English and try to leave no stone unturned until I feel I'm competent enough to read English NEWSPAPERS without EVER resorting to a dictionary.
To let you understand what I really meant to clarify in this thread I'm going to paraphrase the sentence in question:
They switched on the lights today
as opposed to
They have switched on the lights today
In this case, the act of switching on the lights is something that happened at a particular time, say at 5 o'clock.
They switched on the lights at 5 today.
We obviously CAN'T say: They have switched on the lights at 5 today.

Guys, come on! Drop this bullschit! Spain is PARADISE!
Arabo-Judaic Celts - what else do you need or want? If you can't leave in peace between just a handful of nations, what should I think of my beloved Spain, the great guitar music, the tastiest paella, the 12:1 Magic of 1984? Wake up, unite, leave in peace, make Spain what it deserves to be!

Just keep things the way they are. Drugs are bad. Don't give (y)our children easy access to this weapon of the Grim Reaper. Alcohol is bad too. But people should be smart and not get addicted, just work hard and enjoy a well-deserved glass in the evening!

Over 65% of the players in the league are of foreign nationality, compared to below 40% in the Italian and Spanish leagues.
http://soccerlens.com/is-sepp-blatter-right-to-have-concerns-over-the-premier-league/23201/
Debt-laden English Premier League clubs could be hardest hit by the global credit crunch, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said on Saturday.
“Touched by the crisis could above all be English Premier League clubs with investors who today have no more money,” Blatter told the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper.
English soccer has amassed debts of around three billion pounds at all levels, its football association said last year, with nearly a third of that owed by the top four clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
http://www.khaleejtimes.com/epl/inside.asp?xfile=/data/eplfeatures/2009/May/eplfeatures_May3.xml§ion=eplfeatures&
Blatter seems angry with English teams, because they field more foreign players than native ones and they spend more than they can afford. This is at least what one can get from reading these articles online. Guys, no need to bicker here, just understand and analyze the situation.

Pele and Maradona will always occupy the thrones of Kings of Football. But among other players the guy I'd pick would be Zinedine Zidane, a highly intelligent player, a great personality. Of course, you can mention Van Basten, (Brazilian) Ronaldo and others too.

Ronaldo to Madrid?

Didn't know this thread existed... Glad to see a title like that!
Been a huge fan of RM since 1984 (Butragueno, Michel, Valdano, Stielike). I used to like Barsa too, but can never forgive them their loss to Steaua in 1986 in the Champions Cup final in Sevilla.
The second team I'd place after Real Madrid would be definitely AC Milan. The way they played under Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard was truly amazing. Then Juventus.
Real Madrid vs Barcelona stats:
Champions League titles:
RM - 9, Barcelona - 3
Spanish La Liga titles:
RM - 31, Barcelona - 19
Head to Head (La Liga):
Real Madrid wins - 68, goals scored - 262
Barcelona wins - 60, goals scored - 242

I'm sure the OP deserves to be scolded only 'cause she wants to grass someone she knows up. I by no means support calling the OP names and just want her to realize her fault.

Why would you be worried about a middle-class woman with a sick kid when your tax money is spent on killing innocent children in Iraq and Afghanistan? Can you answer this question? Just leave her alone, the government constantly rips you off, or look at all those golden parachute jumpers. Tell me and others to shut up but this is not a relevant thing to grass someone up for. It just seems vile to do something like that, especially when you know the person.

I do understand you want everything done lawfully. But in this particular case I don't agree with you. Everyone does everything he/she can to eke out a living. I don't really understand why you'd report her. That she succeeds in getting a little extra for herself without blatantly breaching the law should praise her courage and inventiveness. I wouldn't touch her and try emulating her effort. What you're doing is not beautiful and stems from envy and greed. Sorry, that's my position as to your flying a kite here.

What does it feel like to be hypnotised?
Posted:
6/12/2009 5:47:36 AM
I wonder if hypnosis could actually help investigating crimes. There was a thread recently about employing psychics to attend job interviews. The defendant could be hypnotised and put through his catechism, like a sort of lie detection procedure. If done right, by competent specialists, that could save untold amounts of time in precisely identifying the culprit(s) and tracing the plot of the crime.

Why don't you buy yourself a GPS as soon as you arrive in Scotland (?) for like 70 bucks, not a big deal? Otherwise you got two options at least: make stops to read the directions from the piece of paper or voice-record them on a CD as tracks and change them one by one.

goodevans,
I agree with you. One will have to sort it out with God and do something useful with the money, something charitable, useful for kids, for the sick. "Happiness comes from within", we heard. So hitting the lottery will have to help us to maintain our happiness, not destroy it.

The other day watched a TV programme about what happened to people who'd hit the lottery. Well, most of them died, went broke and only 2 guys became successful, one running a pastry business, the other one, a humble photographer who, ironically, hasn't told his wife anything about it, put 2 million dollars in the bank and still daily runs his tiny photographer's parlor. How clever and safe!

Of course, it stands to reason they shouldn't spend more than they can fiscally afford. If a team is owned by a billionaire like Roman Abramovich, it's not a big deal for the owner obviously to fork out 80 million euros for a player avidly watched the world over.

I've been a die-hard Real Madrid fan since 1984. If you know football, you'll remember RM's stunning successes in those years.
RM - Borussia M. 4:0, 1:5
RM - Anderlecht 6:1 , 0:3
RM - Inter 3:0, 0:2, etc
Well, they haven't won anything in the last several years, but we must remember they won the Champions' League 3 times within 5 years, starting from 1997 (RM - Juventus 1:0).
Prior to that final in Amsterdam, RM were on the verge of bankruptcy. But since that win, their finances have been on the up and up, with such prolific players as Raul and Morientes pushing the sales for the club, as well as Figo, Brazilian Ronaldo, Beckham, Roberto Carlos. Yes, it's a good question about where they get money from to draw up such dear contracts. I guess there are 3 main reasons:
1) RM was proclaimed the best club of the century, with 9 Champions League titles under the belt - Everybody wants to play for them to enter the annals of history
2) The most successful club in Spain - 31 (!) League titles
3) They come from Spain, whose language 99% of South American countries speak
Everyone is a fan of some club, but RM is something really special for me. It's not about following a team for 2-3 years, it's about "living" a team for 25 years of your life.

This week's new English words and word combinations I discovered:
jolly good (probably could be "jolly well") - certainly
convo - conversation
fag-hag - woman who hangs out with gay men
troll post - post baiting emotional responses from others
manky - inferior, worthless
to go off the rails - to be spoiled by bad management
in the sack - in bed
horses for courses - tastes differ?
to rock the boat - to upset the status quo
aside (noun) - digression
stroppy - easily offended or annoyed; ill-tempered or belligerent
to jump through hoops - to make great efforts and sacrifices for someone
to trawl (through) - to make a thorough search (of)
What does it mean in UK: to keep one's ears pinned back for somebody?
Thanks!

HAPPINESS: Why do so many people not know what it is and how to find it?

People are afraid to be what they wanna be. If one knows for sure that swimming a mile in the morning in the swimming pool can be a nice start to the day and is lazy to do it, he has only himself to blame. Eating lots of greens, fiber, exercising, giving and getting love - these things are of concernment, as well as working hard and giving your best every time you go to work.

To be honest with you, I'd discourage it. Short-term memory, laziness, addiction - these are the main bad effects of smoking pot on a regular basis.
If you are already in your thirties and still haven't stopped smoking weed - you have a serious problem.
Moderation is the key really, but I'd rather work hard all week and then on Sunday get drunk at a safe place over a nice table with a coupla chums. But very rarely, maybe just once a month, roll a joint and indulge in listening to Pink Floyd and ELP and Joe Satriani and some mellifluous trance music, but very seldom.

Go with someone who is Zodiac-compatible with you - Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus and Virgo. I gotta confess it works, at least for me. You can meet someone and almost instantly feel something, positive or negative, towards that person. Then you check the sign, there you go, turns out to be true.
In your situation, it's reasonable to take a little break, develop a fresh hunger for it, and look for a compatible sign.

Have you ever tried to learn a foreign language...
Posted:
6/8/2009 1:37:54 AM
The tragic thing about learning a foreign language is that if you were not born or brought up with that language, you can never feel it the same way, no matter how close it can get. I've been so keen on mastering English all these years, gone to all lengths to push it deeper into my conscience, read numerous books and articles, written out more than 20 000 words and word combinations, lived in the US for 15 years, where I learnt some Spanish too. Every day I come here, armed with my copybook, and write every unknown word out. Last week I discovered:
to suss out - to find out
malarky - something not true
bollocks - nonsense
to shoehorn - to squeeze into
git - reprobate
muggins - simpleton, sucker
to pipe up - to speak up
to vet - to thoroughly examine
skint - poor, broke
to swan - to wander aimlessly
blinkered - obtuse
bee's knees - excellent
to trip off the tongue - to be easy to pronounce
Reading is very important. So is listening. I guess TV could be used for that purpose.

You gotta check out this guy Superflo on youtube.com. This guy is 60 and does 950, 2028 clean (all-the-way) consecutive push-ups and records that on camera. Truly amazing. It's all about taking care of yourself.
By the way, the top 10 antiaging fruits and vegetables are:

This book "Doctor's Little Black Bag of Remedies and Cures" also suggests us eating fish 2-3 times a week, garlic daily, taking a multivitamin daily, taking antioxidant vitamin supplements (C, E and beta-carotene - a form of vitamin A).

A peel is a flat, smooth, shovellike tool used to slide pizzas and yeast breads onto a baking stone or baking sheet in an oven. Also called a pizza peel and baker's peel, this implement is made of hardwood and can usually be found in gourmet specialty shops.
Yes if the pizza dough is kept for excessive periods of time on the peel, what's more if it's having too many toppings, it could get stuck on the peel and if you try sliding the whole thing into the brick oven, it could be a big mess and require a lotta cleaning. So, after applying enough flour to both the peel and the outside of the pizza dough, we gotta put it back on the peel, shake it a bit to ascertain whether it's not stuck anymore and then it will just slide off with no problem.
And this thread isn't really my brainchild, I managed to "save" it from deletion by substituting the pivotal sentence of the original thread for its supposedly pithless title. Wanted to share the secret so bad, had to save the whole thread!
Should read "passionate pizza whiz"! why the hell did i right "com-"!

AFFAIRS - CAN THEY EVER BE JUSTIFIED?

A very tough issue here. It's a moral question. Lofty ideals point to saying NO to having even just sex in a situation like this, optimism says YES, but I've known some really tough people whose spouse even died and they NEVER slept with anyone afterwards, NEVER. Still the temptations of the flesh can be overmastering and one can be half-forgiven if he/she tells the spouse about it, asks for permission. A tough one here really.

Even Edgar Poe would've gotten incensed with such sacrilege. C'mon, couldn't they have just ordered another coffin, a longer one? Everybody thinks only about the exchequer. The human soul is trampled in most egregious ways.
