We all Have baggage at our age? No Baggage thing...I don't get it
Posted: 1/30/2009 4:49:10 PM | My response, more unconscious than conscious, is to more or less rule out as possible partners all those who use the word baggage, it seems to show a great lack of awareness, a laziness with language, a lack of appreciation of what it means to live 50 years on the planet. Our minds are all deficient relative to someone -there will always be someone cleverer, more perceptive - but we need to find people at our level and if you hear cliches substituting for thought and your mind winces then that is not a match.
So, i automatically hate the word baggage, without having really thought about why. I guess the obvious thing is - we all have painful memories, I don't see how we cannot - and our minds are not always free of doubts, insecurities, fears along with the happier emotions, although we may have prolonged happy periods. Sympathetically viewed I guess people are trying to avoid connecting with someone who worries too much about the past, they'd rather connect with someone who is, by and large, happy, or at least pleasant to be with, unencumbered. This is fair enough isn't it, we are all drawn to those who seem to be handling their lives well and are not stuck, a bit of dynamism and energy please ,that would be nice, not bad dreams, woe is me and life as an elegy for lost youth. I personally have my baggage - now when I think about it, it is a disparaging word, isn't it. It seems to imply that broken dreams, broken relationships,goals unachieved etc. are junk and rubbish that we have to lug around like a bag lady her blankets and bottles. They weigh us down etc. but I think with all their pain there can be sweetness intermingled and that this is the very essence of our lives, the word captures nothing of the poetry of experience, it is unreflective. But, as I say most of us want to be with someone who is doing okay emotionally, but bring your baggage, open it up occasionally and inside we may find precious stones of a painful and exquisite beauty.
Now u can see the person 4 me has to be able to sustain and tolerate a fair bit of bullshit! | | | |
