Every since NOW highjacked feminism I don't even like to use the word. I think it would be very nice if everyone got equal pay for equal work regardless of gender, race or religion. It would be nice if Dr. King's dream of judging other's on the "content of their character" came true. Mostly I wish men and women would just treat each other right and stop blaming the other for all their problems.

marryingkind I removed the distance restriction so we can correspond. I was unable to drop you a note because I am above you're age limit. I would really like to learn more about this course and discuss some of this with you. This is the first ray of hope I've had on this subject in a very long time. Please drop me a line, I'm really very interested in learning more.

Its interesting to me how many people who consider themseleves Christians have this "It's In The Bible" so it has to be the literal truth. There seems to be a hostility to any one who questions this. It is impossible to take everything in the Bible literally. For example just look at Genesis in chapter one God creates the heavens, earth, all plants and animals and then creates man and woman in his own image to rule over then. Then in chapter two. God creates the heavens and earth, but before creating any plants or animals he makes man out of the dust of the earth, then creates man to name and look after all the creatures of the world. So which is the literal truth. Did God make everything else first and then man and woman? Or did He make man first then all other plants and creatures then woman from man's rib?
The thing is the Bible is full of contradictions. I don't think that's because its not true, but because God wants us to question. He wants us to look at the whole picture, study all of it, and learn the "heart" of the message rather than the letter of the law. Study the Bible, and you will see that every prophet and even Jesus questions God. God wants us to question, to seek. That's why He gave us something as complex as the Bible. If he wanted compliant robots, he would have given us something much simpler and straightforward.
In fact, that is the main problem Jesus had with the phareses.

"There are myriads of books and copies of tons of different versions of the Gospels and apocryphal literature out there. Go find whatever you want and read whatever you want. No-one is stopping you."
There are litterally hundreds of thousands of accounts locked up in the Vatacan libraries. It is extreemely difficult to get permission to see them and even if you do, you have to know exactly what you want to look at (so only those that scholars know exist by name can be seen, there's no way to browse to discover all that is there. If you manage to get permission to view one particular piece of writing. You are escorted to a reading room by the Swiss Guard where the materail you requested is brought. You are allowed only to bring a pencil and paper and are under guard the whole time you go to view the document. This makes me wonder what is being hidden. Why can't legitemate scholars browse these libraries?
"I have knowledge -- whether it's "real" or not is I suppose subject to agreement with you -- and I come to a different conclusion. But if you want to present actual, "real" evidence that supports your theorie"
Yet you are willing to follow the assumption that the Sandheren (a body Jesus criticized for being too legalistic) broke its on laws in the case of Jesus and that all powerful Rome was inimidated by the "jews"

^^^ why is it so hard to accept that the gospel accounts, at least the one's chosen for the Bible, were slanted to favor Rome? If they are 100% acurate - why has the church done everything it could to hide and repress other versions? To act is if Rome were a helpless victim of the Sanhedrin just doesn't make sense, and it has been the cause of a lot anti-semitism. Any one with any real knowledge of both ancient jewish law and ancient Rome has to ackowledge that the gospel accounts we have don't reconsile with history.
My faith is strong enough to accept that.
As for Constantine killing more christians than the previous "Caesars" it is relevent. Because it shows the pattern of repressing and oppressing anyone who didn't follow the doctrin he chose. That means that there were Christians whose beliefs stemmed from sources other than those chosen for the "official" state religion.
As a very wise member of the Sanhedrin said when Peter was first elected. "If this is not from God, this new cult with disappear, if it is from God, nothing we do can stop it".
Why are we still being prevented from reading other gospell accounts?

romanticpotimist - The Sanhendrin could and did exicute people (see Acts - the stoneing of Stepehen) the didn't need Roman permission. Also, as someone pointed out earlier, Jesus' very legitamite criticisim of the Religious leaders of the day was that they were too legalistic (following the letter of the law and loosing the heart). So which is it, did they follow the law or not.
As far as Constantine goes, more christians died under his rule than under all previous Roman Emperors. Anyone who didn't conform to the decided doctrin was executed.
I never claimed that Constatnine was responsible for the attack on the church in France, it is just another example of how differing christian views have been oppressed. I, for one, would like the opportunity to know what and why those differing views are. Why so much effort to hide them? Seems to me the Christian church has become what it accused the Jewish leadership of being. I wonder how Jesus would react to all this. Does anyone really believe he would approve of killing and/or oppressing anyone who expressed a differing view point?

I have been having what you might call a crisis of faith for some time now. This is because I have long been a student of theology (and a teacher of adult Sunday School) and also a student of history. The thing is the two things don't add up together.
This does not mean that I no longer believe, but I wish I knew more about the historical Jesus so I could reconsile those beliefs.
The following is some of the ways history and the Bible contradict each other. I would really like some opinions.
Sanhedrin - During the time of Christ it was illegal, under Jewish law, to arrest someone at night or hold court at night. The Sanhedrin could convene only in the Chamber of Hewn Stones, never in the palace, home of the High Priest or any private home. The Sanhedrin could not initiate an arrest. One was tried before the Sanhedrin only after two witnesses had sworn charges against them. The accusers had to testify as to the nature of the offence in court, in front of the accused. The accused had the right to call witnesses on his behalf and to cross examine his accusers. It was decreed in the Talmud that even as a condemned man was led to his place of execution, he was to be preceded by a Harold stating what he was accused of, by who and giving an opportunity for anyone who had any information that in the man’s defense to step forward.
If the Jewish leaders considered Jesus a blasphemer, they would first off want to try him legally (to avoid problems later on). Second they would do it strictly through their own laws and have him stoned (the proper and legal sentence for a blasphemer) and would not appeal to Rome for Crucifixion. To do so would backfire on them with the people who hated the Romans.
Pontius Pilate – Pilate had a reputation as a particularly cruel man who could and did crucify many without blinking an eye. From all appearances he tried to maintain control of the province through intimidation. Some sources have said that he was vicious even beyond Roman standards and was tried as such later in Rome and exiled as a result-though this is unconfirmed.
In any case, it is very hard to see this hard, brutal man who was the representative of the most powerful Empire in the world at the time, being intimidated by the crowds of common people over whose lives he had such control. The idea of him as reluctantly sentencing Jesus after trying every way he could to “save” him doesn’t make sense. It also doesn’t make sense that after being so reluctant to have Jesus crucified he would then after the scourging allow the Roman soldiers to continue the abuse with the other beatings and crown of thorns.
The Gospels – themselves weren’t written until somewhere between 70 and 140 AD. They are only 4 of many other “gospel” accounts which have either been lost or are kept under heavy security in the Vatican libraries. Constantine sought to unify the diverse and growing Christian community under one doctrine which was decided at the Council of Nicaea in 325. Once the creed was adopted any dissenting views were banned and with them the possibility of learning what many of these view points were.
The Pope’s Army – Finally, much later, the Pope sent his army to destroy (as heretical) the church that was thriving in France, which was believed to have been founded by Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Aramathia, and not under the Holy Roman Empire. I personally don’t buy into this being because of a supposed bloodline of Jesus. But this church was practicing and preaching things contrary to the doctrine decided by Constantine. What were these practices or preaching’s? Again, as far as we know all evidence had been destroyed or hidden away.

my problem with the whole mary as the grail theory is that it seems to legitimise the "devine right of kings", as it is also believed that this line went on to become kings in france (and as all royals in europe intermarried - kings and queens all over europe).
history is full of autrocities committed by rulers who believed they were God ordained to rule.

scorpiomover - homosexuality is NOT a choice. Its not a matter of a mild attraction to the same sex. Even the most fundamentalist churches are starting to acknowledge it, they just feel that a person born that way should remain celibate.
yes - the bible does speak against homosexuality. In the section of the Old Testament that mentions it also says that it's a sin for a woman to ever cut her hair. Are we all going to hell for that now?
Paul speaks against it a lot more in the New Testament, but you have to consider the time and place where he was preaching. Paul preached mostly to helenistic or greek cities, where "homosexuality" was rampid, but it was not what we would consider homosexuality today. In these cultures the "female" or "passive" role was reserved for pre-pubescent boys. Once they began to grow facial hair they lost their appeal. What he was really preaching against was pedeopheila.

And - Popeye's famous line "I am what I am and that's all that I am, I'm Popeye the sailor man". I doubt that was an attempt by the writers to equate Popeye with God.
I am new to this forum, so I'll take your word that there are a lot of threds on these issues. But I believe its important to keep bringing them up. Its important to question, first, because its biblical to do so (all the prophets and even Jesus questioned God), and second because those who don't are suseptable to charismatic leaders and cults.

"Facist killed jews... not christians"
If you're talking about only the Nazi's you're right. However, during the plague many jews were murdered and some whole villages of jewish men, women and children were burned alive. Because large numbers of "christians" believed they were "devils" and "christ killers".
It was also christians who were responsible for the crusades and the spanish inquisition. Does that make christians bad people? Of course not! It just shows that every faith and people have violence in their past.

Why Have Christians Lost Their Jewish Roots?
Posted:
10/28/2007 12:14:35 PM
This is a subject I have long been interested in. I also have questions about the Gospel accounts that were chosen to be used in the New Testament. They don't really add up with what I know of history. If the Jewish leaders believed Jesus to be a blasphemer they would have held a proper trial (not allowed after sundown) with witnesses. If found guilty they proper religious method would have been to stone him.
Crucifixion was a roman form of punishment. The jews were under a roman occupation and would not have sought their way to punish their own. Also Pilate was ruthless even by roman standards and was later tried in rome for his cruelity, it doesn't gibe with the helpless hand wringing man we see in the gospel who couldn't stand up to the jewish leadership.
There were many gospel accounts. Most are locked up in the Vatican libraries. So we have no idea what those accounts say. The accounts that were chosen for the Bible were written many years after the death of Jesus at a time when many romans were converting. A lot was done at that time to help former paegans convert comfortably, which is why Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter incorporated old paegan rituals. I believe that in an attempt to keep converting the gentiles, these accounts were written to absolve them of the crucifixion and blame it on the jews. The Gospel accounts that were chosen for the Bible were decided at the Council of Nicea - a roman forum - is it any wonder they would chose the one's that showed rome and romans in a better light?
The church founded in France by Mary Magdeline and Joseph of Aramathia was very different than the Roman Catholic church. So much so that the Pope declared it hericy and had his army (yes, at one time the pope had an army) go and distroy those churches and kill its followers. I don't buy the whole Da Vinche Code stuff. That it was because of a bloodline of Jesus, but I do wonder what they knew that has been kept from the rest of us for over 2000 years. All we really know about the church in France is that women were granted equal rights, allowed to inherit propert and even allowed to preach. This makes sense in light of how many women traveled with Jesus during his lifetime.

And Can It Be - did it every occur to you that he was simply using a common phrase (one Popeye often used) and not claiming to be God! Seriously, why do you feel the need to vilify someone for having doubts and asking questions. Is that how God would respond? I don't think so.
Maybe if religious people were more open to listening to and addressing peoples questions and concerns instead of judging and using the "my way or hell" approach, more people would be open to establishng a relationship with God.

Even the most relgious people have doubts sometimes, we are, after all, only human. So if certainty is required to "get into heaven" we're all going the other way. Religion isn't there because God needs us to prove ourselves to Him. It exists because He knows its something we need, to help us through. He also knows that there isn't just one way for each of us, which is why there are so many denomiations and other religions. In the end, its what's in a person's heart that counts, in how they treat others etc. Not how able they were to quote the bible.
I found your second paragraph about gays especially interesting. My church (the Episcopal Church) is undergoing a possible rift in due to this issue. There is little doubt that homosexuality is not a choice, anymore than hight or eye color are a choice. If God chose to make someone that way, who are we to judge. Even the fundamentalists are beginning to acknowledge that it is how someone is born. They claim to fully accept them as long as they remain celibate. This type of self rightousness is exactly what drives people away from organized religion. Frankly, I think if Bishop Iker is so anxious to turn the Episcopal church into the catholic church (he is also apposed to allowing women in the cleargy among other things) then he should take a vow of celibacy instead of telling others how to live a struggle he couldn't begin to understand.
OP, keep questioning. If God didn't want us to question He would have givin us something less multi-demintional than the bible. But don't let the bad apples cut you off from what can be very rewarding spiritual experiences.

The accent definately gives you a jump start over the rest. But after that its down to you to keep a woman's interest. What it really comes down to is that things like good looks, accents etc can get your foot in the door faster, but its really what's inside that counts for the long run.

Making an ultimatum is never a good thing. Its one thing to have a discussion about where you hope the future will go. But to say if its not my way I'm leaving is at best childish. So what if he does what she asks, because of the ultimatum and not because its what he would have wanted to do - what chance do you think that marriage would have?

What is chemistry then?
Posted:
10/14/2007 6:31:58 AM
Chemistry is that electricity that occurs between two people. It may happen when you first meet, it may happen when you get to know someone better. If chemistry is the only bond you have with someone, a relationship won't work, since chemistry alone tends to burn away. But if you don't have chemistry (and it doesn't develop over time) you really can't have more than a friendship.
As for not falling in love often - that's a good thing, shows you have your feet on the ground. Too many people mistake chemistry for love or are so much in love with the idea of being in love that they "fall in love" with everyone one they date.
Real love is rare, should be rare. Seriously, does it really mean anything if someone "loves" you who also "loved" everone else they dated for a month or more.
Stick to your guns. When you do find you love someone, she will know its the real thing.

I can't say I agree with the responses I've heard so far. I can't speak for all women, but I wouldn't want to have sex with someone I didn't at least like as a person no matter how they looked. In the friends w/benfits situation people seem to forget that "friend" is part of that senareo.
I can empathise with your situation and share with you what I'm trying to learn from my own experiences. A lot people are very intense in the beginning of a relationship (wanting to spend a lot of time together - lots of phone calls - texts - etc). This makes me feel a little claustriphonic and I tend to keep them at arms length early on. I tend to grow into a relationship wanting to spend more time with that person as I know them better. The problem is that by the time I'm ready for that, they've decided I'm not into a relationship with them and start emotionally withdrawing more toward the fwb situation. I don't know if this helps at all. But all any of us can do is share what we've learned and hope it helps.

My kids (20 &16) watch that show. My first reaction on mystery and his friends was I'd be too buzy laughing to reject them right off the bat. I guess they may know there stuff if you're looking for one nighters with not to bright, vulnerable gals. But ignore it if you're looking for any substance. Even my 20 year old son says he likes to watch it because its so stupid its funny!

kreuztreger - Yes it actually did happen at a party some years ago. Most people understand the signals when someone wants to kiss, unfortunately there are those who take any friendly jesture as an invitation.

Would you date a guy who just changed careers/became self employed?

I would have a lot of respect for anyone willing to take a risk and follow their dreams. Besides, as long as he's not expecting me to support him, how much money he makes isn't my concern.

Why are no girls happy being single?

Lots of girls are happy being single. Its been my experience that men are the ones more who seem to want to get married. In fact there was a study done on people and happiness. The most happy were married men, next were single women, then married women and single men came in last.
Me, I have no intention of marrying again. I'm perfectly happy being single.

Since I haven't figured that one out myself, I can't really give good advice. But I think if its the right person it will happen, if its not, you can't do anything to change it.

Romantic moves

A lot depends on whose doing the kissing. If it was someone I wanted to kiss, all of the above. I think the dominant male is a common fantasy since it's on the covers of so many romance novels. But not when some guy assumes you want him to kiss you and just grabs you and rams his tongue down your throat.

Chemistry is that electricity you feel when meeting someone or when your hand brushes theirs. There is no logic to it, it just is.

Michaelann - I never said it would make me more comfortable ( just might be a little cooler in the summer not to have the extra layer of clothing) . For some of us bras are nessisary for comfort and no I'm not Dolly Parton, but can't imagine any woman size D or over being comfortable without a bra (unless they had implants).

Walk away. Her friends are off limits unless some time has passed and she makes the suggestion. Really, would you want her to start dating your best friend?

Chemistry or excuse??

No excuse and nothing you did wrong. Chemistry comes from the most primitive part of our beings and sometimes can be very illusive. Believe me, there have been several guys I like a lot and really wished I felt chemistry for. Her goodnight kiss may have been her hoping to find the chemistry, trust me, I've been there. When things like this happen, you just need to move on and find the right fit.

What is in a name?
Posted:

Naming a child is very different from naming a character. If I were choosing a name for a character my decision would be based on how it enhansed the traits I wanted to high-light in that person. Naming a child is more of a emotional things, based on loved ones you may have lost, someone you admire or even a character in a book or movie that you really like.
