I find AMAZING bargains at garage sales. Sometimes you find the best deals in wealthy neighborhoods and suburbs, because people there buy new & expensive items on a regular basis and get rid of the "old" items (which sometimes aren't that old!).
Like a couple months ago I went to a garage sale in an affluent area and got a perfectly good big screen TV for $50! The owner got a newer and bigger TV so he was getting rid of the "old" TV. This TV is so big it's sitting in my storage until I can clear a space for it in my living room. The old owner even hauled it to my storage for free! He told me no one else showed interest that day and he would have hauled it to Goodwill if I hadn't bought it!

Actually libraries are very fussy about what they put in circulation, and they have their own sources for getting what they want. Most of of the stuff people donate gets sold at library sales or those little used bookshops some libraries now have.

Supposedly in Japan people THROW AWAY old electronic items because in their ultra-sanitary (OCD?) culture they equate using another person's TV set with eating from a dumpster!
I rent a storage unit and I've salvaged things (from their fairly clean dumpster) that other storage tenants dump. I've salvaged furniture there (which I donate to Goodwill), even fairly recent computers (which I'm keeping since I'm studying PC repair). The storage company has a rule against dumping furniture & large items so I'm doing them a favor (and making up for someone else's violations!).
I used to do a lot of temporary office work (in dozens of local firms), which sometimes included discarding old supplies and equipment. Occasionally I would ask my supervisors if I could take home stuff (storage boxes, binders, Rolodexes, software manuals, etc) INSTEAD OF of putting it in a dumpster.
But I would never eat food from a dumpster. How do you know the food hasn't been exposed to mold, gasoline or HIV-infected needles or something equally toxic? A simple "look, squeeze and sniff" wouldn't tell you about hazards like that!
The freegan movement seems to be more about the environment and philosophy ("don't be possessed by your possessions") than economics (i.e. getting free stuff).

What ever happened to Dating Around?
Posted:
11/7/2009 7:39:56 PM
A friend of mine espouses a theory, which I tend to agree with, that when people are in their teens or twenties, dating isn't very serious and you can just go out with someone and have fun at a movie or beach or whatever. But when people get older life gets more serious and more compliciated and people start evaluating potential dating candidates in terms of "marriage material" (will this person be able to help raise my kids and pay my mortgage?).
I don't have that kind of baggage, and I also wish it were still possible to "date around" (which doesn't necessarily include promiscuous sex).

I'm guessing that electronics stores, office supply stores, etc. don't donate unsellable items because they don't want the expense and liability of an employee loading stuff into a truck and driving it to Goodwill. At most of those stores they don't even pay for enough employees to man the cash registers all the time so you have to go searching the aisles for a clerk just to take your hard-earned money!
Some stores probably don't get enough of a tax write-off to make donations worthwhile. If an employee were to hurt his back loading a desk or TV cabinet onto a truck for Goodwill, the store would have to pay worker's comp for an activity that doesn't even make a profit for the store. Theoretically a store could arrange for a charity to pick up items from their store but again they would have to appoint an employee to be in charge of that.
There are some grocers and restaurants that donate leftover food to shelters, soup kitchens and food banks (I know of some here in Indiana). But obviously it takes up valuable employee time and money to do so.
The cartoon show "The Goode Family" (from the producers of "King Of The Hill"), which is about a politically correct vegetarian family did a hilarious episode about freegans.

Something ALL women on pof should put in their profiles

My original post was made in jest, but it seems that some people took it too seriously. I honestly don't expect ANY women to to copy that message and paste it on their profiles. Peer pressure and conditioning from family, the media and society are strong forces and not resisted instantly.
I was slightly shocked and pleasantly surpised when I found that text on that woman's profile. Like a child who receives a new toy I immediately started playing with it. When I said "ALL women should put this on their profile" I was being sarcastic, but without "tone of voice" sarcasm doesn't always come through in electronic communications, as many employees have found out when they sent humorous emails to their bosses. We are all (or are supposed to be) adults here; what's wrong with a little discussion? I feel that some people need to look up "equality" and "entitlement" in the dictionary to understand they are not synonyms.
Actually on my most recent date the woman invited ME, rather than the other way around. SHE picked the place, a coffee shop rather than an expesive restaurant. At the cash register I was going to pay for her drink and pastry but she beat me to the punch and paid for her own stuff.

Although the "cut & paste" message I put in my original post was taken from an actual woman's profile here on pof, my original post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, to a certain extent, along with a certain amount of wishful thinking. But sometimes don't we all wish for a utopia that will never come to pass. Like Carrie Fisher said in the first Austin Powers movie, "don't we all sometimes feel like we want to rule the world".

what you said just reinforces my belief that some (NOT all) women want "equality" when it's convenient, but reserve the right to be "old fashioned" in situations where "equality" is inconvenient or unprofitable. So you are younger than me; big deal. It's not like any of us can choose, and/or have the right to be proud of, the year they were born in.
And yes, I know it was supposed to be "MEAL on the first date", not "MEAN on the first date". To quote Harry Shearer, I was just trying to "lighten the mood with humor". Not everything on these forums has to be taken literally or with deadly seriousness.

I would NEVER ask a woman to have sex with me just because I bought her an expensive dinner. So don't put words in my mouth, nor assume that I'm some kind of male chauvanist.
However, if I do buy a woman an expensive dinner, I don't think it's too much to ask the woman to return my phone calls after the date. It's not like the phone call is costing her any money.

Men who refuse to date women thier own age an older.why?

Maybe because when I was in junior high and high school the girls who were the same age as me always dated guys a year older than me. These girls claimed they were "more mature" than boys their exact age and deserved to date boys a year older (yeah, right, like junior high and high school girls are REALLY mature!). So now it's my turn to date younger women!

I just read something in a woman's profile that I think is so wonderful I strongly believe ALL women here on pof should cut and paste into their profiles:
*
I'm not running a ploy to get free meals. I'm happy to meet at a restaurant and pay for myself, if you still think you'd like to get to know me.
*
Ladies, if you put this in your profiles you'll definitely impress a lot of men here. It would definitely impress more men than those "cut & paste" breast cancer messages.

Nudists have found out that when children are taken by their parents to nudist camps, there is a lower rate of teen pregnancies among nudist teens than non-nudist teens. Maybe because they've already "seen it all" by the time they're teenagers and aren't fumbling around in the back of a car without birth control to fulfill their curiosity!

As for the woman who wanted me to buy her a steak dinner, we went first went to a Lone Star steakhouse but it was too crowded. So we ended up at a old local steakhouse (a real dive that has since been torn down, although the food was good). It was a first date (via a personal ad in the local paper) and I didn't want to see hr again. When the check came I insisted on only paying my half of the check. So the woman said "I might have some money in my purse" and opened her purse.
A few years later a boss I had at a temp job confirmed my strategy. He said "if you go out with a woman and you don't want to see her again, just put down some money and say 'here's my half'!"
For you vegans out there "Grow up!". You worship animals, but have you ever stopped to think that animals eat other animals? Cats, for example, from lions to housecats, eat an exclusively carnivorous diet. Ever see a lion eating a salad?

I would never date a woman with kids, but that doesn't make me a "terrible person". It's my choice, just as you chose to have kids (unless they were "love babies"). I have no parenting experience so you wouldn't want me as a "daddy" for your kids anyway!

You Cannot Handle Me:
Your statistic is very interesting. But why is it that when I attend singles events, join (brick-and-mortar) dating services and singles groups and run personal ads in the local paper that there are more MEN than women (sometimes the ration is 2 to 1). Is that because men are more likely to be aggressive about using "active" dating methods (singles events, dating services and singles groups, personal ads, etc.) while women tend to be more "passive" about dating ("love happens when you're not looking"). The way American heterosexual society is still set up (long after the end of the Victorian era) is that the man still has to doing the searching & the asking, while most women just sit back and wait to be asked out. So where are all these extra, unattached women? Maybe they're in nursing homes and thus way too old for me!

Ironically it costs a lot of money for me to go to a nudist camp because the closest ones to me are about a 2 hour drive away. I spend a lot of money & time gathering my supplies so I won't have to waste time leaving the camp once I get there. Not to mention association dues to get camp "discounts" and receive their publications. Then you pay admission fees, cabin rental, activity fees, etc. So I haven't been to a camp for almost 4 years. Unfortunately I don't live near a nude beach where it's free of charge.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm also a non-smoker and would like to see more non-smoking POF events. Several months ago I went to Blue Crew (at E. 96th & Masters Rd. near the Menards/Sam's Club strip mall), which is a non-smoking venue, to see about hosting a POF party there. Unfortunately they require a deposit, which is against POF rules.
Does anyone know of any other non-smoking venues?
I have sinus & eye allergies. I do occasionally go to bars that allow smoking but if it gets bad I have to leave. And I don't like the lingering aroma of smoke in my clothes!

I have attended several POF events here in Indianapolis recently and nearly all the women are 10 years olders than me. Since I'm not cruising for a "cougar" I've yet to see anyone at a POF event I'm interested in dating. Where are the single Indianapolis women in their 30's & 40's?

Yes I can cook. And not just grilling meat on the BBQ. For Christmas, instead of just repeating a Thanksgiving menu like many Americans do (turkey, etc.) I prepare an elaborate German dinner with sauerbraten that requires several days of preparation. along with spaetzles (dumplings), German potato salad, schnitzel (breaded and fried pork cutlets), etc.
I also have a secret recipe for chocolate chip cookies. I don't use any special ingredients, I just took the Nestle Toll House recipe off the chocolate chip bag and finely tuned the proportions over several years until I arrived at the perfect recipe.

I went to a movie a few weeks ago and in one of the pre-movie commercials they not only asked the audience members to shut off their cell phones and pagers but also now they add "NO TEXTING - everyone else can hear you clicking"!
I host seminars and I always tell the audience at the start "please turn off your cell phones, pagers and other noisy electronic devices". This is especially important because sometimes the seminar company asks me to audio record the seminar so they can sell the tapes.

To paraphrase author/talk show host Greg Behrendt, "She's just not that into you"!

Implants are like something out of Frankenstein or George Orwell. Yuck! Those Norplants they used to put in women looked like the woman had a dinner fork trapped under her arm! I recently stepped on a nail and had to have it surgically removed from my foot so I can't imagine having an implant removed is much fun!
