There's no need to be rude. I only added you to favs so I could instant message you with suggestions since you did ask for people to either post or private message you. You have your settings set to males only and hene had to add you, and I was only trying to help. If you want to have your nickname be unflattering as you have changed it to then so be it. I was simply offering you advice which you did in fact solicit for. Perhaps "rogue" is the best way to describe you after all.

2 of your pics are very grainy and hard to see and the one from 2003 should be removed since it's so old.

Mangos

I add mangoes to green salads often and I also make this rhubard-mango crisp below. Everyone loves it.
Rhubarb mango crisp
Crumbled cookies, fresh ruby-red rhubarb and juicy mango make an irresistible crisp.
Preparation time 12 minutes
Baking Time 45 minutes
Makes 4 to 6 servings
10 to 12 gingersnap cookies
3/4 cup (175 mL) all-purpose flour
1/3 cup (75 mL) brown sugar
1/3 cup (75 mL) cold butter, cut into cubes
3/4 cup (175 mL) granulated sugar
2 tbsp(30 mL) cornstarch
1/2 tsp (2 mL) cinnamon
1/4 tsp(1 mL) nutmeg
2 mangoes
6 cups (1.5 L) coarsely chopped fresh or frozen rhubarb
1.Preheat oven to 375F (190C). Crush cookies into small pieces. You should have about 3/4 cup (175 mL). Place in a medium bowl. Stir in flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter with 2 knives or your fingers until mixture is crumbly.
2.In a large bowl, use a fork to stir granulated sugar with cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg. Peel mangoes and cut flesh away from pit. Slice into 1-inch (2.5-cm) chunks. Add to bowl and toss. If using fresh rhubarb, cut off and discard leaves. If using frozen rhubarb, rinse under cold running water to melt ice crystals, then pat dry with paper towels. Toss rhubarb with mango mixture. Then turn into a buttered, 8-inch (20-cm) baking dish. Sprinkle cookie mixture over fruit but do not press down. Set dish on a large, rimmed baking sheet.
3.Bake in preheated 375F (190C) oven until fruit is tender and topping is golden, 45 to 50 minutes. If necessary, cover loosely with foil during last 15 minutes of baking to prevent overbrowning. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Any leftovers will keep well, covered and refrigerated, up to 2 days.

Chicken Fried Steak
Posted:
7/4/2008 6:16:41 AM
Being Canadian, I've never seen this on any menu but have heard many people I chat with from the US talk about it. I've never had the nerve to ask, why the heck is it called Chicken fried steak? I never knew if it was a chicken cutlet fried up or a steak breaded like fried chicken or what. I now know from this thread that it's actually beef but still not entirely positive why it's called Chicken fried.

I used mine for 5 years and my sleep apnea kept improving and now I no longer need it. I hated it for 5 years and it woke me up every single night for 5 years. When I slept though, I slept well but the mask still nagged at my face and hurt like hell when I'd flip on my belly to sleep. Potential partners need to understand how important to our health it is and I've never had a problem explaining it to them. If they are sleeping in my bed, chances are they want me to be around to keep sleeping there.

Anyone else on adkins diet?

I live a version of Atkins and have for the last 7 years. There are so many protein foods out there that don't contain a ton of fat. I choose lean cuts of meat and my carbs come from low glycemic veggies with no added butter. Who the hell wants to eat bacon and eggs everyday or have butter dripping off the veggies day in and day out. You can choose your healthy protein wisely and pick your veggies without adding tons of crap on them. I have really good blood pressure, no cholesterol problems, no health problems at all.
I don't miss bread or pasta and never was a huge sweets person so I don't miss sugar at all. It can work for you and be healthy if you make wise choices.

Hummus...anyone?
Posted:
12/23/2007 8:02:43 AM
I just finished making a batch of hummus and it's a huge hit in my family. We like it very garlicky and with lots of lemon juice. Here's the recipe I just made it and I serve it with baked whole wheat pita wedges. It will all be gone within an hour that's how much they love it.
Ingredients:
5 cloves garlic—roughly chopped
1/3 cup lemon juice
¼ cup water
14 oz canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans)—rinsed and drained
½ cup tahini
1 teaspoon sea salt
Method:
PLACE all ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until smooth, scraping the sides occasionally. I add a bit of water or extra lemon juice if it's too thick. I like it very creamy and smooth.
Variations: If you like a spicier hummus, add a small red chili (chopped) or a pinch of cayenne pepper, or try a little cumin for a more exotic variation.

Christmas Pudding recipe needed
Posted:
12/6/2007 7:47:23 AM
I am looking for a Christmas pudding recipe. My grandmother was the one that always made it every year and when she passed away, nobody could find her recipe. I have looked and looked to find something similar to hers but no luck. It had currants and peel and shredded carrot in it. You had to steam it before serving it Christmas day and she always made a rum sauce to put over top.
If anyone has any recipes, I'd love to get them and try one out this year.

I use it in indian curries and also in pfefferneusse. It's a yummy spice and they throw it in chai tea as well so if you want it a bit spicer, you can always add more yourself.

Advice please on installing laminate floors

We just did this and we ripped out the old stuff, made sure the subfloor was well screwed into place and then filled in the screw heads with floor leveler. We used a sabre saw with a special bit for laminate floors and it went very well.

Has everyone lost their will to lose and have their pounds off by summer?????????? Where is everyone lately. I'll revive this and post that I lost 2.8 lbs this week so am now down 23.2 lbs. No chocolate on Vday and have been exercising daily and behaving and avoiding any junk at all. The biggest thing for me to stay away from is the booze. If I have a drink or two then I feel like I have the munchies and we all know when we get the munchies, we eat too much even if we truly aren't hungry. I'm giving up booze and all junk food for lent. Be nice to lose another 20 by Easter.
Self talk, telling myself I'm worth doing this for has been a huge help. If the scales don't move, I don't get discouraged, I just say ok next week they'll drop if I keep this up. Eventually they have to move or the measurement I take bi-weekly have to drop. Hopefully a few more will come back and get back on track with this.

I didn't weigh in sunday because I wasn't home but I weighed in today and i'm down 7lbs this week for a total of 20.4 lbs since we started. I originally wanted to lose the 20 lbs by Christmas, instead lost it by Valentine's Day. Slow and easy wins the race it seems so I"m happy with that.
I have a motivational calendar in my bedroom and every night I go and look at it and i also track my exercise for the day on there. I'm not allowed to jump in bed unless I've done something active. I've found myself at 11pm, jogging on my treadmill so I can write something on the calendar. I find even if I do 15 mins at that hour I feel better that I did something at least.
And no chocolate on valentine's day for me either, I already told him I'd shoot him if he showed up with chocolate.

I did nothing all week cuz I had surgery earlier in the week and I managed to lose .4 lbs, down 13.4 now since we started this. I'm still swollen and bloated so hopefully when this leaves next week I'll lose even more. Back to running on Monday now that I am fully healed. For anyone that is hating this weather to walk and don't have a treadmill at home, you can pick up some dvds by Leslie Sansone for like 5 bucks called Walking away the pounds. When I wasn't able to run this week I threw one in and it was much lower impact but still walked 2 miles doing her moves. Just need a dvd and a bit of room to walk on the spot and you are all set.
Keep it up everyone.

Cooking Chinese....
Posted:
1/30/2007 3:54:23 AM
Try going to King Wah's down on York Street. It's a chinese supermarket and they have a lot of authentic chinese products and even sell the utensils and pots that you need. Everything is dirt cheap in there and you can't ask for better. It was a weekly stop for me when I lived in London. The owner speaks English fairly well but the wife is a bit tougher to understand. They might be able to recommend a more authentic restaurant in town. You're less than 2 hours from Toronto, you could always take a weekend drive to Chinatown and experience true chinese cooking and wonder what the hell you are ordering since it's nothing like you see on traditional chinese restaurant menus. A truly amazing experience in Chinatown in the shops and restaurants.

Help ive done a bet about a carrot cake
Posted:
1/17/2007 3:10:10 PM
Here's the easiest recipe for carrot cake I've ever made and it's always super moist. Might look wet when it comes out but it's cooked. If you can mix and pour and hit the numbers on the microwave you can make this and it's only 1.5 cups of sugar and you can use whole wheat flour if you want as well.
Microwave Carrot Cake
1 1/2 c. flour
2 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/4 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. oil
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
2 1/2 c. finely grated carrots (5 or 6)
1/2 c. raisins (figs or dates)
1/2 c. chopped nuts
Sift flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Beat sugar, oil, vanilla, and eggs. Add carrots, raisins, and nuts. Spray 9x13 pan and pour batter into pan. Makes 1 cake. Microwave 13 minutes on high. It might look sticky on the top but that is normal. Every micro is diff so u might want to micro one extra minute if it looks too wet. Let cool an hour then frost with cream cheese frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting
4 oz. cream cheese
3 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. powdered sugar
FROSTING: Beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla; add powdered sugar. Beat until smooth.

I burned mine along with the veil and the shoes and any other party type favour things that were kicking around from it. Only thing I kept were the photos and the video and they are in my son's room. If he wants them, he can keep them and if he chooses he doesn't want them then he can throw that away. I'm trying to decide what to do with my rock. It's 1 karat so might just get a pendant made from it. Don't think my son would want that bad luck rock to pass on since the marriage was over before the honeymoon phase.

I think getting back to my old routine has put me back on the losing track again.

My son and most of his friends all got guitar hero II for Christmas so we've been having duals at my place all throughout the holidays. Amazing just how good some of these are after only a few weeks of it. And they are actually learning some good older tunes that we listened to and now they all love them and are downloading them. It's a cool game and really seems to keep the teenagers in my living room having fun with that instead of out wandering the streets looking for something to do.

New Years Eve with kids
Posted:
12/29/2006 9:22:04 AM
Almost every community has first night celebrations which are directed at families. In our small town, they have the arena opened up to free public skating and the pool is open to open swimming. They also open the community centre and have hot chocolate and goodies for everyone to enjoy. It usually starts around 7ish and runs until 11 or so. The little ones go home earlier and the teens and their parents end up staying late. I have taken my son a few times and then we get home in time to watch the ball drop at midnite and we celebrate with a bottle of bubbly. Sparkling apple cider for him and vino for me. This year he's 16 and we are doing something similar. I have had many great New Year's Eves with my son and other family members with kids. We make our own fun night and make it about celebrating with the children and not just a big drunk fest.

What did you miss at Christmas?
Posted:

The only thing I truly miss at Christmas is my grandmother. She always was the glue that kept the family together and she just loved Christmas so much. Every year we set a place still for her and we toast to those that are no longer with us, it usually makes us tell stories about her and we laugh and a few tears are shed but all good tears. I had my special someone with me this year but I still missed her. I would have loved for her to meet him but I'm sure she has sent her approval from above already.

I'll post my recipe as well and it's also very easy and good. This one is done in the microwave and I use my big 8 cup pyrex measuring cup to microwave it in because it gets very hot but any good microwave bowl will do.
Peanut Brittle(microwave recipe)
1 cup sugar
½ cup corn syrup
1 cup peanuts
1 tsp butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
Microwave sugar and corn syrup on high for 4 mins. Stir in peanuts and microwave 3 to 5 minutes until light brown in color. Add butter and vanilla and blend well. Microwave on high for 1 to 2 minutes. Add baking soda and stir gently. Pour into greased cookie sheet and let cool up to 1 hour. Break into pieces. Store in tight container.

Weight loss surgery - how a friend of mine died this week
Posted:
12/19/2006 2:19:39 PM
Still, if her family doctor said she might be eligible for either that could be where the problem lies. A lot of family doctors have no idea what the lap-band even is and they read on the surgeons' sites that there are certain criteria to meet to get the band and they don't read the part about where it's not covered. Hopefully for your friend, if they are willing to cover it, she will be lucky to go that route instead of having to opt for the gastric bypass. My surgeon said this past summer that it's looking like the studies are coming back more favourable for the band finally so chances are OHIP will eventually cover it but then the wait time will be the 5 to 7 years for that as well because now, all the bands are done in private clinics and they do 4 to 5 per day. If OHIP covers them, then they have to fight for OR time with all the other surgeons so will be lucky to do 2 or 3 per month. There are pros and cons of having it covered. It's the best $17k I ever spent. I wouldn't hesitate to spend that on a vehicle so why spend it on myself, who is far more deserving than any car.

Weight loss surgery - how a friend of mine died this week
Posted:
12/19/2006 8:28:28 AM
OP, sorry for the loss of your friend. I, myself, have a lap-band. I was able to get the gastric bypass covered if I wanted it but when the surgeon explained all the possible complications, having it covered meant nothing to me so I paid almost $17k to have the band implanted. I would never ever recommend anyone getting gastric bypass from what I have learned in my research on WLS in general. I'm extremely happy with my band and managed to lose 122 lbs with it in the first year.
To the people that think that diet and exercise are so easy to lose it, I'll tell you that I am probably one of the best dieters in the world and can diet and exercise with the best of them and can lose all the weight to only have it all come back on down the road. With the lap-band, I am limited to the capacity I can eat and if it gets too lose, a few more drops of saline put into the band and off I go to maintain or to keep losing.
OHIP wouldn't cover the Lap-band procedure because it's only been in Canada since 2001. They said they have no long term studies to prove it's a more effective way to lose weight even though the actual surgery is less invasive. It's been used in other parts of the world since 1988 but OHIP will not use those studies to come to a conclusion. Now that the band has been around for 5 years in Canada, they are now rethinking it and my surgeon told me that there is a good possibility that the band will be covered in the near future.
Just a minor correction to the OP, the band is not latex, it's actually hard silicon with a small amount of titatium in the port. It's the same stuff they use to make artifical hips and knees.
I don't think bringing a lawsuit against the provincial government would be to your friend's advantage because all surgeons that do this surgery warn each patient of the potential complications and they definitely include death. Each patient has to sign their form saying they understand the possible complications that could arise from surgery so therefore there really isn't much that can be done.
I truly feel your friend and it's unfortunate that they wouldn't have listened to you and just borrowed the money could they not afford it.
Stillacious, the Band is not covered by OHIP at all. It is covered in some of the other provinces but not a dime is covered in Ontario yet. Gastric Bypass is covered for people that meet certain criteria and the waiting list is about 5 to 7 yrs and that's why OHIP has been paying to send critical patients to the US to have it done there but these are only for extreme cases that can't wait the 5 to 7 yrs to have it done here.

Has anyone ever tried this supposed herbal product that will help reduce belly fat? I have lost almost 130 lbs but I just can't seem to lose the fat off the belly and I do know that my cortisol levels were very high last time my doctor checked them. I was wondering if anyone out there in the pond has tried this product and does it actually work?

Women and Toilets
Posted:

This is one of those things that I've nevr really understood. If (traditionally, and I mean no disrespect or sexist comment) women were the primary child raisers, they would presumably be doing most of the toilet training. Then why aren't the women teaching their little boys to sit and not pee on the seat?
T-gurl funny you mention this. We were just discussing this 2 weeks ago and my father had never heard of a man that sits down to pee then later found out his son in law does and so does his grandson cuz his daughter hates cleaning up urine. He was so shocked that he had to ask every man he knew if they had ever heard of this before and then he was further shocked to find out that a lot of these men do in fact sit down themselves to pee. It's been over 2 weeks since this discussion and it still makes him laugh every time he walks into a bathroom in the coffee shop we were in at the time of the initial discussion. He comes out shaking his head each time, saying , I still can't F*ckn believe some men sit down to pee...next they'll be wearing skirts.
The old fart is almost 73 and he just learned something new 2 weeks ago, guess we are never too old to learn something new.

OP, obviously your court order says that you have full custody and the father has no visitation if he needs to apply for access. In my case, we never fought for who had custody and I made sure he had lots of access but when he didn't exercise it, the judge wanted to yank his rights to any access and make him apply to the courts for it. It's just an application to amend the existing court order where it says he has no access at this point. If you don't agree with it, then you can fight his motion and ask for supervised visits if you think he should have even that because of his past. Perhaps your lawyer when he/she said that he deserved a chance, meant he deserved a chance at visitation not at custody. The province of Ontario will not give joint custody to parents if they cannot get along. Joint is very rare in this province unless you can prove that the two of you are able to communicate and put the child first.
Personally, if I felt my child was in danger with his father, I'd agree to supervised visits only for the longest time and just for a few hours at a time. If you don't want to get stuck in the having the child ready every 2nd weekend for a father that might not show up then ask them to have it worded that he has reasonable access with reasonable notice. My original interim order had every 2nd weekend and every wednesday overnite, he never exercised those visitations more than once or twice so when we went for the final order, it was changed over to reasonable access with reasonable notice that way I couldn't get in trouble for not having my son ready to be picked up every 2nd friday nite at 6pm.
If he's as bad as you say, then chances are he won't even apply to the court to have access but if he does, it's just another day in court to either agree or argue why he shouldn't have it the way he wants it. I'd not cut my son off from his father ever unless i knew for a fact that he would harm my child then i'd fight tooth and nail to have his access stripped. You have to do what is best for your child.

Rhubarb, love it or hate it?

Thanks Classic, will bake one next week with my frozen berries and rhubarb for my lil guy. It's his all time fav pie. Might just use them right from frozen and increase the thickener like you said and pile it high since it will really shrink down once they thaw.

I"m going to revive this thread since I"m wondering if anyone has made a rhubarb-strawberry pie with frozen rhubard and frozen strawberries before? Should I just let them both thaw out, drain off the excess liquid and maybe use a bit more thickener? Or should I just forget about it and wait for the fresh stuff next spring? My son really wants his fav pie but have never made it with frozen fruit before. Anyone have luck with this or have a recipe that uses frozen fruits?

Worst Christmas Present You've Ever Received Was...

Gift exchange at work and this particular year we said, it had to be something handmade. Lots of artistic, crafty people so figured I couldn't go too wrong. Even those that weren't crafty could still give homemade goodies and jams and that sort of thing. Really didn't think anyone would end up with a boner gift. Everyone is opening their gifts and you can sort of tell who made what just by their style. It comes to my turn and I knew who had my name just by eliminating the others so I was happy cuz this woman is very crafty. I knew it was going to be nice.
Well holy shit, the expression on my face must have gone from smiley to shocked when I opened it and it was a Christmas angel made out of a damn rag mop. The ugliest damn thing I've ever seen and everybody loved it. They were all asking her if she'd make them one. I put a fake smile on and said omigod i love it!!! super fake of course and i absolutely hated it. Funniest part was all the others were envious of my gift and here i was hating it. Still to this day, I think it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. It quickly got shuffled away in a christmas box and put in a yard sale in the spring. Some poor sucker bought it thinking it was beautiful.

Sounds like a bad yeast infection to me. If it's constantly damp feeling and really raw and has a terrible odor to it then it's most likely yeast. Get some anti-fungal cream and put it on her bottom as directed. It should clear up in a few days. If that doesn't work then take her back to her doc and perhaps it's eczema or some other auto immune disease. Don't let it go on too long.

Mirage, I was out again today shopping and I find it so much fun when it's a zoo. I must be sick in the head or something. I don't even need to buy anything else but I just seem to still go every few days just in case. I did buy myself something today though. Be patient and don't let people bully you. Don't slow up the shoppers but don't be bullied either. You have a right to look at stuff without someone being pissed you are too slow. Good luck tomorrow.

Silicone bakeware
Posted:
12/13/2006 12:10:31 PM
I did a thread search and one forum came up about this but it had very little to do with silicone bakeware so am going to ask again.
I use all the silicone utensils and just love them since they are heat resistent. I've not purchased any of the silicone bakeware yet and wondered if anyone has used it yet and is it better than non-stick and aluminum? If a recipe says to grease the pan, do you still grease it with the silicone stuff? I was out looking at it today but other than saying you can't use them over 500F, it didn't say much else so not sure if they need to be greased or not when the recipe calls for it.
Any good or bad experiences with this stuff? Is it really worth the investment to purchase all new bakeware?

We had about 8 inches of the white stuff a few weeks ago but with this rain and above seasonal temps of 8C, it is melting like crazy. And to think I live close to the north pole according to some and we have less snow than London!!!

Habs? You have too much time on your hands ifn ya wrap the goodies in the stockings! I hate wrapping too much to do that!
Lil Miss Kitty, Santa has a tradition in my home. All Santa gifts are wrapped in solid red paper with big green bows and that goes for the stocking too since that's also from Santa. That Santa has to hunt down the same solid red paper every single year and some years it's awful tough for Santa to find it. Even though my wee one is 16 now, he still expects Santa gifts in the solid red paper with big green bows. And YES, I do have too much time on my hands. All the kidlets in my life have a **** of a time getting into anything I wrap because there isn't even a corner left untaped. I remember what a brat I was and unwrapped gifts while parents were not looking then rewrap them cuz some people just didn't use enough tape. Well nobody will ever do that with a gift I wrap.

Who likes the show HOUSE ??? Would you go out with a guy like him?

I absolutely love this show and adore his character. I think he does has a soft side but they just haven't introduced a strong enough female dominant character to knock his ass down to size. Send that boi over here and I'll have him on his knees in no time with a collar around his neck doing as I say!!!
