Your case for/against God.
Posted: 10/15/2009 4:43:47 PM
my case for God is that I know the mess my life was in when I asked Him into my life and how He changed it for me. I know that without Him I would have ended my life then and hurt so many people by doing so. I know that since then, I could not have gotten through some of the things that have come up without having Him to lean on. I know that I have lived the last year without any income at all and yet He has provided for me every month so that I don't have any bills that are behind and I have food on my table enough that I can share with others. I know that I have been diagnosed with a couple different diseases/ problems but when it came time to recheck those things they were gone with no explanation the doctor could come up with but I know what happened. I don't need "proof" that God is real- I know He is. I would rather live my life believing there IS a God than to live it not believing in Him only to die and go to hell and THEN find out then there is a God. God created all people and gave us the privilege of "choice"-you don't have to believe in Him, that's your choice. He doesn't send you to hell-you make that choice. we don't have to understand the things He does do, we just have to know that He has us in His hands and as long as we trust Him everything will work out according to His plans for us. God let His son die on the cross so that we could be free-what greater sacrifice than to offer your son for a world that doesn't deserve it. I know I couldn't do that-so I thank Him for loving me enough to let His son take my place. God is real and there is nothing anyone can say that would make me believe otherwise.

the land of misfit kitchen appliances
Posted: 9/29/2009 10:57:46 AM
after my carpal tunnel surgery, my hands aren't as strong as they once were so my son bought me a black and decker hands free opener. you just line it up on the can, press the lever and it does the work for you. i know it sounds like the old counter top openers but it's much better and easier. i would never get the can open now if i had to twist the handle and in today's world nearly every kitchen has cans-we've let ourselves get too busy. too bad we can't turn the clocks back and learn from all our screwups!

The Cost Of It!!!
Posted: 8/31/2009 6:50:22 PM
i like to go to amish country to get spices. i get a really good size container for a much more reasonable price. also get great prices on chocolate (and it is sooo much better than the store bought chocolate) and real vanilla for my baking. so if you have any amish in your area go check them out!

Ice cream sandwich cake ?
Posted: 8/15/2009 6:16:49 PM
i've had it the way charon52 listed it in the kid friendly recipe and it is really yummy! just make sure you get it nice and set up in the freezer before you serve it or it's kind of messy and not as good. it's definetly an easy dessert to make and everyone i've ever served it to liked it a lot. also-- i kind of press them down a little after putting them in the pan to kind of fill in the space between the sandwiches. the ice cream in the middle squishes out a little to spread it all together.

Military guys??
Posted: 7/30/2009 12:31:09 PM
my ex husband was military (4 years army and 18 years navy) and i wanted to address the poster that said that not much changes when the military person is deployed. That is so far from the truth. There are many military divorces that are caused by deployment. When that military person goes on deployment the spouse is left to handle everything at home by themselves and the "routine" that they had before deployment changes drastically. The spouse left at home becomes the "boss, the mom and dad, the disciplinarian, the chief cook and bottle washer, the tutor, the repairman, the taxi driver, and everything in between. When that military person comes home the "routine" that has been in place in their absence changes and it is sometimes very hard to relinquish titles. Many spouses that have been left at home sometimes feel they did just fine in the other persons absence and don't like being challenged in how things are done now. It causes many problems in a marriage.

I would also like to address the comment that many military people are probably cheated on while they are on deployment. This is true but it is also true that many military people cheat on their spouses while they are deployed-I know because mine cheated on me. He gave me the old sob story of how lonely he was without me and like a sucker I forgave him. I was lonely without him too but I didn't cheat on him!

Before any one asks- he was a medic in the army-sent to vietnam where he was hit by shrapnel from two bombs- another medic dressed his wounds after the first hit, the second hit severed his caratoid artery. He was honorably discharged but later decided he wanted to go back but the army wouldn't take him because he was "too old" for them (he was 24) so he joined the navy. He was and still is a good man even though he was a cheater. The only thing I really regret about living a military life is that I will never be able to retire with a full retirement because I always had to quit my job and move somewhere else and start over while he has a retirement and will soon get a partial. I guess that's life!

Chocolate frosting, how do you make it.
Posted: 7/24/2009 4:41:49 PM
here's the one i used to use for decorating cakes.

2 sticks of parkay
1 pound of crisco shortening
2 pound bag of confectioners sugar
dash of salt
1 T. vanilla (white vanilla if making white frosting)

put parkay in mixer and beat till creamy. add the crisco and beat till mixed in well.
start adding confectioners sugar -once you have added about 1/2 the bag the mixer will start dragging a little. add the vanilla and salt and then add the rest of the confectioners sugar. when mixed together good turn up the mixer and beat till fluffy.

to make it chocolate-- put a little cocoa in a bowl and add some hot water-just enough to make a paste and then add it to the frosting and beat it in good.

this makes a good size batch of frosting so you'll probably have some left. store it in an airtight container and it will keep in the refrigerator for about two weeks.

wilton also has decorating videos you can buy that show you step by step how to do decorating-not as good as taking a class and having someone to really explain things up close but pretty good. i always wanted to register for classes at wilton but couldn't afford them and couldn't afford the time off to take the classes. i have taken a couple hometown classes but would love to be able to go to the wilton school for classes!! i bought a couple of their basic decorating videos when i was taking my classes and they were pretty good.

making scalloped corn..
Posted: 4/18/2009 3:23:53 PM
here's a recipe called Kansas Corn that my son just loves. He makes it for every get together we have.

1 can of whole kernel corn
2 eggs
1 can of creamed corn
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1/2 stick butter
2 T. minced onion
1/2 t. salt
1/4 t. pepper
2 cups saltines crushed
12 ounces of diced cheese (we use velveeta-i know a lot of people don't like velveeta but it works good in this recipe)

drain the liquid from the whole kernel corn into a cup and set aside.
beat the eggs in a large bowl then stir in both corns , 1/4 cup of the reserved liquid, milk, butter and cheese.
bake for about one hour at 350 or until as done as you like it.

easter recipes
Posted: 4/3/2009 3:34:41 PM
this isn't actually a recipe for easter dinner but if you'd like to teach your children, or even children in church class, the real meaning of easter this is a pretty cool way to do it. and you can eat the cookies too after your "lesson". of course in church you would have to pretend to make them since you won't have an oven there to use but they will still get the picture.

Cookies are to made the evening before Easter:

1 cup whole pecans
1 t. vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch of salt
1 cup sugar
zipper baggie
wooden spoon
tape
Bible

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19: 1-3

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon into a mixing bowl. explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. read John 19: 28-30

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Jesus gave His life to give us life. read John 10: 10-12

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. the salt represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers and the bitterness of our sins. read luke23: 27

So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup of sugar. the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes till stiff peaks are formed. The color white represents purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. read: isiah 1: 18 and John 3:14

Fold in broken nuts. drop by teaspoons onto waxed paper covered cookie sheet. Each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. read Matthew 27:57-60

Put the cookie sheet into the oven, close the door and turn off the oven. Give each child a piece of tape and let them seal the oven door. Jesus' tomb was sealed. read Matthew 27: 65-66

Go to bed. explain to the children that they may be sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed and they had to leave. read John 16: 20-21

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. ask them to notice the cracked surface and then take a bite- the cookies are hollow. On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. read Matthew 28: 1-9

the kids will really be surprised when they discover the cookies are hollow plus it will be a Bible lesson they won't forget.

Best Dessert
Posted: 3/11/2009 3:22:02 PM
I was just getting ready to make this one-it's called cream puff cake. it's pretty simple and really good. it tastes pretty close to a cream puff-hope you like it.

1 stick of margerine
1 cup water

bring these to a boil.
remove from heat.
add 1 cup flour.
add 4 eggs (one at a time) mixing well.
spread into a greased 9 X 13 pan. spread mixture part way up the sides of the pan.
bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. cool.

mix 4 cups milk and an 8 ounce bar of softened cream cheese (use a kind of deep bowl because it will get a little frothy from the mixer) once these are mixed well add 2 large packages of instant vanilla pudding and mix till it thickens up. spread this into the crust and top with 8 ounce tub of cool whip. keep refrigerated.

here's one that kind of tastes like a teriyaki wing and it's really simple.

2 small bottles of soy sauce (lite) 10 oz. bottles
1 cup gin
garlic powder to taste (about 1-2 T. should do it)

marinade chicken in this sauce for at least one hour (the longer the better)
bake at 350 degrees until it's done to your likeness. ( i like to let mine get kinda dark)

use leftover sauce to keep chicken from drying out when reheating.

pumpkin rolls
Posted: 11/9/2008 10:47:47 AM
here's the one my family uses and we like it a lot.

Beat one cup sugar , 2/3 cup pumpkin and 3 eggs.
add 1 teaspoon soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 3/4 cup all purpose flour and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
line a cookie sheet with wax paper and spray with Pam.
spread batter onto the cookie sheet with a spatula.
bake 15 to 18 minutes at 375 degrees.
remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes.
turn out onto a towel sprinkled with powdered sugar (or can use parchment paper)
roll up the cake in the towel. cool completely (if we're in a rush, we sometimes put it in the fridge for at least an hour). then unroll and spread on the filling.

filling
beat together 1 (8oz) cream cheese, 1 cup powered sugar and 2 teaspoons butter
spread on cake and roll into a log again. sprinkle with powered sugar and refrigerate.

you can also add some finely chopped nuts into the filling mixture . i've never had any complaints with this recipe-hope it works for you.

sugar free recipes
Posted: 5/11/2008 4:50:45 PM
to rune3-- i have tried some of these recipes and they are very good. it is supported by the American Diabetes Association and all the recipes include complete nutritional analysis and exchange values for each recipe. i showed it to my diabetes counselor and she said it was a wonderful book and was planning to get one for herself.

I'm not sure where you get the sugar free jello and pudding in canada but in the states they are available most everywhere they sell the regular ones. my counselor says they and the strawberries are fine for me to have.

sugar free recipes
Posted: 5/11/2008 7:09:32 AM
Hi ridster!
I'm a new diabetic-just found out a couple weeks ago but i have a strawberry pie recipe i made once for my mom and it's pretty good-can't even tell it's sugar free.

sugar free strawberry pie
strawberries-as many as you want in the pie
2 cups water
1 small package sugar free vanilla pudding (not instant)
3 ounce package sugar free strawberry jello

cook the water and pudding to full boil then remove from heat.
add one 3 ounce package sugar free strawberry jello-stir to dissolve then cool a little.
pour over strawberries-gently stirring
put this mixture in a 8 or 9 ince baked pie shell or you can use a graham cracker crust.
refrigerate to set.
serve alone or with lite cool whip

you can also use peaches and peach jello too or what ever you like but still use the vanilla pudding.

here's one for a beef stew if you have a crock pot. i got a really nice fix it and forget it diabetic cookbook for crock pot stuff-even desserts. so if you think of something you'd like to have and want to see if there is a diabetic recipe for it let me know and i'll take a look.

hearty beef stew

2 pounds stewing beef, cubed and trimmed of fat
5 medium carrots, sliced
1 large onion, cut in chunks
3 ribs of celery, sliced
22 ounce can stewed tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 bay leaves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon pepper

combine all ingredients in slow cooker.
cover and cook on high 5 to 6 hours.

orange creamsicle cake
Posted: 4/6/2008 12:09:50 PM
this is a delicious cake and tastes nothing like the creamsicle cake in the box mix-it's so much better! this will remind you of the orange creamsicle ice cream bars and can also be made as a sugar free cake that tastes just as good as the regular recipe. great summer time cake!

1 (18oz.) lemon cake mix
1 envelope unsweetened orange kool aid
3 eggs
1 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 pkgs. (3oz) orange gelatin
1 cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
1 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pkg. (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding
1 (8oz) cool whip- thawed

In a mixing bowl, combine cake mix, drink mix, eggs, water and oil. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Pour into a 9x13 baking pan (does not have to be greased). Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Using a meat fork, poke holes in cake.

Cool for 30 minutes. In bowl, dissolve 1 pkg. gelatin in boiling water. Once it's completely dissolved, stir in the cold water. Pour over cake, cover and refrigerate for two hours.

In mixing bowl, combine milk, vanilla, pudding mix and the other dry gelatin. Beat 2 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes then fold in the cool whip. frost the cake with this.
keep refrigerated.

** for sugar free cake use sugar free jello's , sugar free instant pudding and "free" cool whip.

to get chocolate to pop out of the molds you need to put them in the freezer for a while and they usually just pop out. if they don't come out right away just run your finger over the back of it a few times to release it. this always works for me.

Amish Friendship Bread
Posted: 10/11/2007 8:19:05 PM
not sure if this is what you are looking for but it sounds like it.

**Use a large deep glass or plastic container

Mix 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk in this container.
Cover lightly. If container has a lid, leave it slightly ajar or place cheesecloth over container and secure with a rubber band. Leave at room temperature-Do not refrigerate.

Stir every day for 17 days
on day 18 do nothing
days 19, 20 and 21 -Stir only
day 22 Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk and then stir
days 23, 24, 25, 26- stir only
day 27 Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk and stir

At this time you should have about 4 cups of starter. Put one cup of starter into two ziplock bags to give to two friends. keep two cups-one to bake and one to keep going( if you want to keep it going) otherwise you can give starter to three friends.

With this one cup bags of starter follow these directions (will have to give these directions to the two or three friends for them to follow also).

Day one- Do nothing
Day 2, 3, 4, and 5- mush the bag 2 times a day
Day 6- Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Mush together thoroughly.
Day 7, 8 and 9- Mush the bag and let the air out 2 times a day.

Day 10- Pour and squeeze the contents into a big bowl. Add 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour, and 1 cup sugar. Stir and pour four 1 cup starters into 4 ziplock bags and give these starters to more friends to keep it going. Don't forget to give them a copy of the directions.

You will have a little left in the bowl (about 1/2 to 3/4 cup) Add to this - 1 cup oil, 1/2 cup milk, 3 eggs and 1 tsp. vanilla. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, mix 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, 2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 1 large box of instant vanilla or banana pudding** and 1 cup chopped nuts or fruit (optional) Mix together with contents of above bowl.

Spray 2 loaf pans and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture to coat the bottoms of the pans. Pour in dough mixture and sprinkle the top with cinnamon/sugar before baking.
Bake 1 hour at 325 degrees.

** Can use 2 small boxes of instant pudding. Try different flavor combinations-butterscotch and vanilla, white chocolate and cheesecake, etc.

Hope this is what you wanted-If so, have fun and enjoy- this is awesome bread and is especially good warmed with butter on it!!

worlds easiest peanut butter cookies

Try adding a miniature peanut butter cup to these right after you take them out of the oven, let them set for a minute or two and spread the chocolate around the top of the cookie. It's wonderful! My co-workers love these.
