A Touch of Grey
Posted:
1/2/2006 3:21:47 AM
I like grey hair. On others & on myself. I feel like they are badges of honor & I earned every one. I try not to say never but SO FAR, I have no desire to color or cover up the grey.
My dad did the gradual grey thing along w/ the receding hairline. He was distinguished looking. My mom had mousey blonde hair, so she dyed hers auburn from her 20's. She was in her late 70's when she decided to let it go. That was a big shock to not see her red anymore, but I think if it had happened gradually it would have been ok. She now has lovely silver grey hair. But the funniest thing has happened. The nape of her neck is beginning to turn dark brown, which she never was.
My brother has a receding hairline, salt & pepper as is his beard. Very nice.
My ex head hair hasn't greyed much but his mustache is all grey. In his case, I might color my 'stache till it matched the top, so it wouldn't look so odd.

I was just glad to see SOMEONE thought it was offensive.
I don't think African-Americans or Gay people find racial slurs or bashing offensive because they are uncomfortable w/ themselves. I think they think it's offensive because it's cruel.
Using a joke about a sick pedophile doesn't exactly help your point.
There are so many other great subjects to make us laugh. Why stoop to the crass level of insulting people...any people?
Be kind.

Would you date a recovering alcoholic?
Posted:

I wouldn't date a recovering alcoholic, not because of him but the fact that I'm in Al-Anon, having spent 20 yrs w/ an abusive alcoholic. I have too much baggage, even though my ex is in recovering. Also, ACOA(my dad). Just wouldn't be a good idea.

My daughter got into the first college of her choice!
She's very musically talented. Plays several instruments,
has a beautiful voice & is a hit in drama.
She wants to major in art management.
Her ultimate goal is to own her own Jazz Club.
I have no doubt that she will. She can do anything!

Let's look at some REAL horror movies!
Posted:
12/23/2005 5:23:26 AM
A good horror flick doesn't have to have the blood & guts spread all over the screen. A good horror flick leads you into imagining much worse than any screen could show.
I love Hitchcock. Yeah...I know more suspense/thriller than horror but I like him! LOL
Ok, back on topic...I like the classics. Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, The Phantom of the Opera, The House of Wax(w/ Vincent Price), The Mummy, The Picture of Dorian Gray, zombie movies in general, Stephen King(you know the ones & no, not The Green Mile), films from Edgar Allan Poe(The Fall of the House of Usher, etc). There are plenty more. But you get the idea. If you've only seen the modern ones. Give yourself a treat & rent a classic, get a big bowl of popcorn, turn off the lights & get ready to be...
Good idea for a thread.

What Has Happened to Movies
Posted:
12/23/2005 4:31:31 AM
If you want to see a really good, modern day(the 60's still qualify, don't they?), character driven, scant CGI, film, I've heard "Capote" is excellent. I always wait till it comes out on DVD but its on the top of my NETFLIX list.
CGI has its place but if there is no character development, no plot, then its not really a film. Its just a ride @ Disney World.
My cent & a 1/4(inflation you know). Good idea for a thread.

*"T'WAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING"
Posted:
11/23/2005 6:42:07 PM
*"T'WAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING"
T'was the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees....
Happy eating to all, pass the cranberries, please.
*May your stuffing be tasty, your turkey be plump.
Your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious, your pies take the prize.
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs.
This is not an original but was too good not to share.
Everyone have a happy, healthy, safe Thanksgiving!

Favorite Thanksgiving Food/Meal ???
Posted:
11/23/2005 6:32:45 PM
Thx Dallas for the good info.
Pecan pie is my favorite TG dessert & this variation looked too scrumptious not to pass on.:
Texas Pecan Chocolate Pie
Yield: 1 Pie - 8 servings
Crust
1 cup all purpose flour
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, chilled, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons (or more) ice water
Filling
4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
3 large eggs
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1 1/2 cups pecan pieces, lightly toasted
For crust: Combine first 4 ingredients in food processor. Using on/off turns, process until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Drizzle 2 tablespoons ice water over mixture. Process just until moist clumps form, adding more water by teaspoonfuls if mixture is dry. Gather dough into ball. Flatten into disk. Wrap dough in plastic and refrigerate 30 minutes. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Keep refrigerated.)
Preheat oven to 325°F. Roll out dough on floured surface to 13-inch round. Transfer to 9-inch-diameter glass pie dish. Trim overhang to 1 inch; fold under and crimp decoratively. Set aside.
For filling: Stir chocolate and butter in heavy small saucepan over low heat until melted. Cool slightly. Whisk brown sugar, eggs and salt in large bowl to blend. Whisk in corn syrup and chocolate mixture. Sprinkle pecans over unbaked crust. Pour filling over pecans. Bake until crust is golden and filling is puffed, about 55 minutes.
Cool pie completely on rack.
Everyone have a happy, healthy, SAFE Thanksgiving!

I think "meeting for coffee" is used as a euphemism for going for a non-alcoholic drink where the 2 ppl can just relax & talk in order to get to know each other. In the summer I might have iced tea, in the winter a cup of cocoa.

Ummm...back on topic...
Good places from personal experience:
At work, but make sure there are on another dept; working WITH them can get uncomfortable, not to mention all those harassment laws.
Mutual friend's house....nice low key comfortable place
Taking college courses...usually you have something in common already
Gym...again, something in common
Airport/airplane...confined spaces lead you to weed out the wheat from the chaff quickly
Summer camp...summer lovin' @ its best

best food to take hiking
Posted:
11/20/2005 11:33:29 AM
When you're hiking, take along a snack with protein, carbohydrates, and salt replacement. You can make your own GORP("good old raisins and peanuts") or Trail Mix:
Basic Trail Mix
Equal parts of nuts and various dried fruits with additions of chocolate or coconut or salty snacks like pretzels or breakfast cereal.
Let's use a cup for an example.
• 1 cup salted peanuts
• 1 cup raisins
• 1 cup M&Ms
Mix and portion out, remembering that 1 ounce provides 140 calories. Adjust the proportions to taste.
Common Additions:
• Dried fruit: raisins, dried apricots, date nuggets, banana chips, apple chips, dried papaya, dried cranberries, dried cherries.
• Nuts and seeds: peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds.
• Chocolate and more: M&Ms, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, carob chips, dried coconut
• Salty stuff: Pretzels, sesame sticks, oriental rice crackers, salty "party mix" cereal.
• Cereals: Any breakfast cereal, granola.
HAPPY HIKING!

Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing & gravy, which also can be made into a pretty good casserole w/ the left overs. Just dice up the turkey, throw it all in a casserole dish & bake @ 350* until heated thru(about 20-25 min). If you have leftover veggies, throw them in too.

Awww the wonders of those comforting characters on Sesame Street.
Something so wholesome & good about them.
To this day, when I'm flipping through the channels & happen to see them, I stop & enjoy their innocence & they make me feel better if I'm blue & even better if I'm happy.
My kids favorite set of books were a Sesame Street set. I can almost recite them by heart. Maybe it was the fact we(our kids & us)could enjoy the shows together.
Today was brought to you by the letter S & the number 7.

Can you not see that I love you?
Can you not see I care?

Line muffin tins w/ FOIL muffin liners(the paper ones stick too much).
Fill muffin spaces 2/3 full w/ mix.
Place regular Reeses Peanut Butter cup, one on each muffin.
Bake as usual.
Remove let set & you have yummy pb/chocolate frosted brownie cups.
Always been a great hit w/ bake sales & special home treats.

How to meet members of the Opposite Sex..how did you meet your last BF/GF??
Posted:

Met my ex @ a friends house...he had cute buns...offered him a backrub...lasted 20 yrs.
Next guy was online lasted 8 mon. Sweet Army Sgt Major. Separated but decided to go back to his wife.
Then after a few different dates, I met a guy in a tv trivia chat room. Wonderful guy, intelligent, funny, handsome but was a workaholic, so we parted friends after 2 yrs.
Online dating site was the next one lasted 10 months till I got suspicious that there was another woman. Still don't know for sure but just the fact that the trust wasn't there we parted ways.
Took a yr off. My brother told me about this FREE site, didn't tell me the name, I found it on my own & then found out it was the one he meant...serendipity.
Exchanging e-mail w/ several guys, 2 on a regular basis. And outside of
, met some really nice ppl here of both sexes.

Tats can be cool.. well placed & in moderation. Judging ppl by them however is NOT cool.
Saying that the ppl that wear them are chessy w/o knowing anything else about them is "judging the book by the cover" & you know how well THAT works out.
I myself have none but only cuz I'm a chicken & hate pain. More power to those that want this form of self-expression & are brave enough to go thru w/ it.

Profile option meanings...OPINIONS WELCOMED...
Posted:
11/8/2005 11:49:26 PM
Ok...I'm coming to realize I may not understand the real meaning of the options given in the profiles. I'm gonna put down what I think they mean. Please correct me if I'm wrong or you have another understanding of that option.
Hangout: friends that go to the movies, play pool, etc
Short Term: want an intimate time
Talk/E-mail: now for me it means trading e-mail/chatting on IM about our lives, funny things that happen & even serious stuff but I get the impression that many put this down for a c.y.b.e.r. relationship
Long Term: leading to life partners either living together or marriage
Photo Exchange: ?
Other Relationship:?
Dating: just that...fishing
Friends: just to make friends to talk with or do things with, platonically
Intimate Encounter: s*x
Activity Partner: Now I thought this was dancing, hiking, movies, etc but the more I read it seems it too means an "Intimate Encounter"
So what do all of you think? Am I being naive?
Appreciate your comments/thoughts.

are women leery of guys over 30 who have never been married?

I admit when I see a guy or gal over 30 I pause to think why but then again why not? Maybe those that have waited are smarter than those of us who married in our 20's & found 20 yrs later we should have waited. My brother is dating a woman who is 40, never been married(engaged 4 times) & no kids. They seem very happy(he's 50, divorcing w/ 2kids)). So it can work out irregardless of age.
Much good fortune to all of you of any age that are

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I did that already(wife, mother, nurse). Some parts were wonderful(& still are) some...not so much. Now it's marching(more like sashaying...
) to a different drummer. Doing what I want, when I want, w/ whom I want. The best part:not worrying what other ppl think.

Thinking I got a dr's appt today I'd rather not go to
, but this time tomorrow it will be all over. I hate appts that I HAVE to keep & won't let me procrastinate like I want to(dangle dangle).

From another thread. Brought a tear to my eye thinking of my spaniel, Buffy, from long ago. Hope it comforts you Blonde:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Having radiator heat to put my towels on so they are warm when I get out of bath/shower & I can wrap up in them all cozy. Dry off faster too.

Glad to see how creative you guys can be. Not just dialing your favorite pizza place.
How about once a week cooking up a big batch of whatever you like then freezing it in individual portions to pop in the microwave for later in the week?
