Mandatory DNA tests at birth?

You are aware that using Wiki as a source is laughable in most cases don't you?.... I use it all the time..but really now... where the hell do you guys pull these stats out from?
are you some sort of economist or an accountant... I mean... how do you figure that it will cost near '$0.00'?
as for the blood tests and other tests on newborns... care to share with me what these routine tests are please?... cos....besides testing for the limberness of their hips and physical bending and slapping on the behind... checking for jaundice... what else are the mad scientist doing to our babies?
When it becomes mandatory, the cost will drop to next to $0.00. They already do blood tests and other tests on newborns.
And, conservative estimates put the percentage of "uncertain" paternity (I prefer paternity fraud) between 4-10% of kids born each year in North America. That's about 200,000/year....

Ironing

OY!!!....
too funny and cute.... just learning to iron....
You go gurl... nothing looks better than well pressed clothing.
well....word of caution.. I think someone already mentioned it...since you bought it second hand...be very careful there isn't rust and corrosives inside....from someone leaving water in the iron.
I swear my mom's iron has a iron problem...and has ruined many clothes.
I learned to iron back in 1969..... my brother wore cotton diapers...an I was in charge of the ironing.
.... and when I was married I remember getting up every morning...making breakfast for my husband...and while he was eating I would iron a fresh dress shirt for him.....every morning.
Now?... well I might iron once or twice a year...and only if I really need to....

Mandatory DNA tests at birth?

All 3 of my daughters appear to be Caucasian... my youngest has big blue eyes.... and I am asked constantly if I am their nanny.
They are indeed mixed-race. Their father is blonde, blue-eyed, 6' Scots....as you can see by my pic.... I am of South Asian ancestry.
I don't see the point in DNA testing to be common and manditory...imagine the volume of tests...and the greater incidence for error..... or the need for more For Profit instant labs popping up everywhere.
If there is a doubt about paternity....then get tested... an it is not an outrageous cost here in Canada.
I know when my kids were born that I had to fill out the forms and declare what info I wanted to list on the birth certificate...such as the Surname for the child...and the Father's name if I chose to list it.... I guess some pple don't know.

There is not a Starbucks on every street corner in town.
* There is a smell by-law..
* Jay-walkers do get fined....have been since 1970
* Parks are closed at 10pm.
* The one an only big box store... is camouflaged as a Starbucks....lol
* Tim Hortons was voted down by city hall....it would attract the wrong type of patrons
and..... the 7-11 is open at 7am....and closes at 11pm.
example..... West Vancouver.....

College- A Dream Deferred.. Once Again, Penalizing the Poor
Posted:

A lot of countries in Western Europe and other countries offer free tuition with a catch.... yup.
They want their graduates to stay home.... practice law, medicine, nursing, engineering etc...at home.
Two of my cousins rec'd sizable scholarships recently...one is at Oxford.. full tuition....his younger brother...did get an overseas scholarship but after he had accepted a local scholarship .... the homeland scholarship has him bound to practice his chosen profession for a 3 year period. They are both studying medicine btw.
so... yes.. South Africa for example has had a flood of doctors leaving their country to practice overseas....we are fortunate here in my area to have those very well trained specialist....but at what cost?....their educations were paid for by the South African govt...their scholarships and tuitions, training.
so.... not fair to compare what is going on with 'free' degrees overseas.... cos nothing is free.
I don't know much about US schools...but Canadians whine and gripe about tuition too...and fact is... our schools are heavily subsidized.... ya...those high earners...who graduate with a Science or Law degree for example....they were heavily subsidized by the Federal govt.
They are paying hefty tuitions...but not the true price of the education which is substantially higher.
Someone indeed does have to pay the electrical bill. The salaries for the profs and staff...for the landscaping and artwork ....lol --- don't get me started on that one!

couple arrested for not tipping.,,
Posted:
11/21/2009 10:19:25 PM
I tip well when someone provides me a service.
I make it known if the service is lacking and I make sure someone in managment knows this.
as for having to wait a long period of time for a meal at a 'classy' place....well... I have dined at many a nice restaurant...and the good places....well they are not over-packed and slingin drinks and cheap steak and curly fries and mounds of salad. Those places are packed to the rim and people are waiting.
a nice place is equipped to service their patrons in a timely fashion and provide both excellent service and food and drink....and not have the diner feel rushed.
1 hour is an excessive wait.... but that is to be expected at those fast gobble yup your food bulk discount chains.... they load you up on booze and shove bread and salad down you cheap.
so.. the story is missing a few points... one which is difficult to understand is why.... after offering to comp the meal did the restaurant call the cops? Wouldn't the equivalent to the gratuity be the comp?
Where there words exchanged and the restaurant had, had enough of the attitude?
As for large groups...they require more service....someone needs to keep flogging drinks to the drunks while other diners are left to fend for themselves.
If a large group requires 'private' or special attetion and more staffing then yes, there is a extra charge for that.... mind you... I would also expect better service if I were required to pay extra. The grill is not going to make way for their orders...they have to wait in line like everyone else....so what extra are they really getting?... more napkins?.... faster bar service? The meal orders go in order...they got to wait.
Don't call people Trashy... ..

Ever Tree Plant Before?
Posted:
11/20/2009 9:08:30 PM
I have met a lot of pple who have been tree planters....this part of the world we do a lot of reforestation....and it is hard work... not a glam job as I guess you know.
here is a clip from Wiki..which I think is a reality check for many who are considering it as a fun summer job.
Based on statistics for British Columbia, the average treeplanter: lifts a cumulative weight of over 1 000 kilograms, bends more than 200 times per hour, drives the shovel into the ground more than 200 times per hour and travels over 16 kilometers with a heavy load, every day of the entire season.
Encounters with wildlife, including grouse, stinging insects, moose and even bears are frequent. Bears are perceived to be such a danger by many, that the only way to ward them off is by having a "bear dog" on site.
Actual injuries from bear encounters are however extremely rare.
Another danger that treeplanters face is the risk of injury caused by the repetitive and jarring work.
Logging roads are notoriously dangerous as well, and that's where the majority of treeplanter accidents occur[11]. The reforestation industry has an average annual injury rate of approximately 22 claims per 100 workers, per year. It is often difficult and sometimes dangerous
that said... I know guys and gals who have paid off their university tuition in one season ...or bought themself a house and had it paid off in full by 3 years.... a nice home.. in a good area too.
I've planted a few trees...in the yard...apple trees... a fir tree.... we live on a mtn....lol.. thousands of trees surrounding us...tens of thousands.

Hell.... no problems here... I see it for what it is...tough times and you are taking advantage of a good thing. Hey...if it is good for you...and it is not a big deal with your folks....ya... you are over-thinking it.
if a gal can't get past the living at home thing...then she would be too superficial and selfish ...and not understanding of the reality of the economy.
go out and date....and don't make a deal about where you live..... have some fun and get to know people again... and if and when it comes up...don't apologize.... don't apologize.... just say...hey... I moved back from Calgary and I'm at my folks.
No deep discussion and explanations and apologizing for not having your own place.
Independence does not mean living on your own.
Taking care of your needs and being smart about your situation shows me you are intelligent enough not to be living beyond your means and getting into debt.

I am heartbroken, women, please tell me what u think

Parents have to be very careful who they bring into their children's life.
That is why my children have not met anyone I have dated.
I have 3 young daughters and I have to be careful that I am not introducing the wrong person ... it is scary to think that perhaps I might bring in a stranger into their home...their safe place...a stranger who might harm them.
I also don't want to send the wrong signal to my kids that this might be their future step-father or I am going to force someone on them.... make them like someone.... or guilt them into accepting someone so not to hurt my feelings.
it is complex....well in my mind it is... I am scared of them being harmed by a stranger... and yes, any man I am dating really would be a stranger.
if they were harmed by that person would they tell me?... my kids are close to me... I have told them they need to tell me if they are hurt by someone... if they feel threatened or have a bad feeling about someone.... so... if seeing Mom is happy...and telling Mom something negative about her boyfriend is going to make Mom either sad or angry....maybe they would hold back information.
I know as a mother I am very protective.
I am sorry for your hurt. I truly am, perhaps now is just not the time for her....she has a lot of strong reasons for not pursuing the relationship... you have to honour her wishes.

do women really have a checklist
Posted:

Well... I guess 'WE' must...or should at least.
Don't you guys have a checklist when you go shopping for your dream car?
Ya.. I think us gals should have a checklist of what we want in our Dream Guy right?
ya.... I think so too!
so...my list would include...
** Good sense of personal hygiene....aka... familiar with the concept of clean!
** Good manners.... I met a guy years ago at a POF event.... he was a sloppy eater....ate off the table top...off other people's plates...spat out food when he spoke...the women at the table were totally grossed out...so were the men....yuck!
** I like my men tall...so...I would look for that...well...as long as he was taller than me... 5'10" or taller would be nice.
** Financially stable.... not a moocher... not looking for me to support him and his family....lol...nooooooo I'm serious!
** NO criminals... blue collar or white collar...does not matter... I don't want any felons.
there must be more...now that you have me thinking about this...but that is a start.
oh oh... I guess a guy with kids would be a good thing too.... cos I got kids...and I think such a man would be understanding of the trials of parenting and possibly better equipped to be a step-parent. No Deadbeat Dads Need Apply!
yikes..just noticed above posts... ya.. Must be Single!....lol... seriously..single.

H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?
Posted:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The American Medical Association have acknowledge earlier this year that there may indeed be some correlation with Autism... Asperger's in particular and childhood immunizations. They are now willing to admit that there have been an overwhelming number of cases and they can no longer ignore this...and they are researching this now.
this after much media about celebrity parents screaming that there are 'facts' not just theories about such a connection. No matter how it came about I find it comforting to know that a major body like the AMA are willing to say...yes..we must investigate this.
I am not blaming the vaccine...but I do always have these high number of stats at the back of my head...and lived with the reality of a child with Asperger's for the last 13 years.
I would like to add that... I think that only a parent who has come close to losing a child to illness....spent many days and nights in hospital with a child nearing death...as a parent with 3 little germ monsters who get sick......many of us would do anything to keep our child well.
If there was a vaccine to prevent Cancer would you take it?
If there was a way to prevent you or your loved one from falling sick or dying would you take that opportunity?
I would.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ had to reply to this. The quote...that I would not longer bother discipling them was because I am worn out....fed up of doing damage control.
As for The Womanizer comment:
I asked her about it when she repeated the word a few times. I didn't want to overeact initially....not to give it any creedance.
She seemed to enjoy her new found word too much. Apparently another girl at school's dad is a womanizer too and it was discussed.
Where did you hear that word?
She said that 'Charlie' on Two and a Half Men is a womanizer.
I then told her that I had told her previously that she is not allowed to watch that show and that I don't care what Charlie was.... it was very rude to refer to her father as that.
she then said to me...well he has a new girlfriend every week...and then her sisters agreed with her.
my daughter is almost 15.... in highschool.... I try my best not to stifle their opinions and thoughts.... that said I do draw the line when it comes to respect....and I don't care what her observations are.... I set her straight that she is not to be disrespectful and make assumptions and call anyone names like that...especially her father... I made that very clear to her sisters too!
so assume what you may about me... I will tell you this now..the word 'womanizer' does not exist in my vocabulary....and I do not speak disparingly about their father...if anything I have gone beyond duty to help build a respectful and healthy relationship with their father.
I have requested in the past that he be aware that they are children and they form opinions and make observations...so just keep that in mind.... I did not give him any specifics.
I don't want to know what he is doing in his personal life.... I don't care... I am not his keeper.
I am just constantly doing damage control on my end and trying to be factual with the kids and not get be judgmental about others.
back to someone who asked why not immunize my kids...well at the time I posted the initial thread..the kids had been immunized...and I just requested they miss church for that one Sunday...as the vaccine takes 8-10 days to protect your immune system....they would of been all clear by the following Sunday.
*** the EX called me last night..left a message...He can not see the children as he has a bad bout of the flu and is very sick.****

As a parent of 3 children.... one with mild Autism...due to I strongly belief to some side effect of her childhood immunizations....I find getting my children vaccinated a no brainer.
I know that sounds totally upside down and twisted.
I knew something had gone wrong with my child around the time she was given her vaccines of HTP....but then I know that is was ...it is my obligation to try to continue to protect my children from illness. My children continue to receive their vaccines on a regular basis.
I have seen a case of a child who died of Chickenpox.....it was a horrible death and I think could of been prevented by vaccine. Where chickenpox is a common childhood illness and normally mild there are deaths and later complications from that virus.
I look at the overall picture as a parent....only those who have had sick kids and seen how one child who is not immunized can get a whole classroom of kids sick... one family who does not believe in immunizing their children go out there and spread a virus with little concern of others.... ie, pregnant women, Cancer patients, people with weak immune systems.
Are they waiting for the 'Right'...the 'Safe' vaccine to come out?...well....while they are waiting they are getting a whole lot of others sick.

Christmas is coming - how do you deal with Santa and your ex?
Posted:
11/17/2009 12:23:09 PM
Christmas is difficult for us financially....two of the children have birthdays the last week of December and it adds up.
the focus for Christmas for me has always been the emphasis of time well spent together.
it's not about the gifts....although they do love the gifts.... I try to treat them yearound...and make the gift giving thing really take a backseat during Christmas.
I am flexible with visitation...it's not a competition .... my kids have plenty of the necessities....and get nice gifts from my parents....they go for quality not quantity... again...we try not to focus on the gifts and the monetary value or popularity or what their peers are getting or going for the holidays.
you have already shopped wisely...purchased the gifts... so.... your choice I guess...take them back if you can or suck it up.... take the hit on your wallet and lesson be learned for next birthday or Christmas. I hear you about the costs.... I have 3 kids too.
I am a thrifty bargain hunter for gifts.... I've had lots of practice.

Difficult to explain this....but since I posted this thread....well I have officially given up.
Where we had a good relationship....agreement to communicate and ensure we did what was best for the children at all times....it was all just ....how do I say this....
"ya...ya...ya....ya, ya, ya"
something my Ex taught me about way before we were married....it's how he just nods in the affirmative....but is actually ignoring the person....it was a joke to him...it was how he 'communicated' with his mother and others.
I HEAR you....but I am NOT listening to you.....nor am I agreeing with anything you are saying. I am going to do things my way.
This past Sunday there was no communication once he had the children.... I tried to contact him several times on the Friday to let him know I was working on Saturday and where they were.... I couldn't reach him...no voicemail.
I rushed home from work Sat, picked up the kids from my parents place and dropped them off at his place. He could of had them much earlier if we could reach him.
Sunday we had a major storm front hit the coast, trees down.....power outtage....the children arrived at the front door soaked to the bone, their thick winter coats full of water, their overnight bags completely saturated....no umbrellas, they walked home in the rain.
I don't have a dryer.... so we just managed.
He dropped them off at 1:00pm again..... no lunch in their tummies.
ya...what he does with them on his time....none of my business... I am just in charge of the clean up and the childcare when they are sick and hungry.
Not going to expel any more energy to worry......to bend, compromise....just going to go with the flow even if I think it may be not a good situation ... a safe situation.... and I am going to ignore any complaints from the children about what things happened when they are with their dad.
No more trying to help build bridges and see the bright side of visits.... no coercing the kids to go have a great time with Dad....nope...not my job.
Not going to discipline the kids and tell them to stop referring to him as a womanizer and the other things that spew from their mouths...based on their personal observation. They have met several of his new girlfriends over the last few years.
I find most of the time they don't know what they are saying....and I find it disrespectful.... I tell them that...an explain to them it is wrong. I put a stop to it.
I don't speak ill of their dad. I don't want to know about his life.
I don't grill the kids, I just don't need to know a lot of things.
I am done trying to do damage control and build bridges so he can have a healthy and respectful relationship with the children....... Nahhh....not my job.
ya....so... I have read what all of you have written, and thank you...sincerely thank you.... but after 28 years of this twisted form of communicating I have clued in finally. I am worn out.
I was wrong. It's none of my business what happens when they are with their dad.

Yup, Yup, Yup...... if the trees were not in full bloom you would be able to see right into my diningroom and livingroom... perhaps even the bedroom window.
Full view of my back yard...I can tell my tenant's kid was suntanning .... she left her blanket on the trampoline.....lol. You can see the kids tree swings and hula hoops, my recycling that was to go out.
I thought the Google Maps were taking pics of major streets, major arteries ... intersections...like in the downtown core.....not up in my sleepy neighbourhood.
I checked out the kid's school....and there were no children outside....you could see the bikes and the teacher's cars in the lot.... some of the classroom doors were open to the outside, must of been a warm day.... I know the pic was taken in June of 2008, as we did an art project outside and it is visible in all the pics.
ya.....it's just a tad too up close and personal for my comfort.

okay... that was a teaser line....lol
I was just helping my daughter out with her homework, they are studying longitude and latitude. Found a site that was helpful and it had a link to Google Earth Maps...so for the fun of it we typed in our address...and well... OH MY!!!!!!!!!!!!.... things have changed a lot from the first days of the program.
I found a clear photo of my house...my mommyvan....and several views of my property... you can really get a close up ... you can see the moss on the roof...the cherry blossom petals on the grass... what's in the backseat of the van....hmmmm....
I checked to see if they caught me standing nekkid in the front window....
check out your addy....and zoom in and see what you can see. I was surprised...at least they blocked out my license plate.

Would you consider doing volunteer work or working for a non-profit or a NGO?
The govt of Canada has jobs overseas if you are qualified... speaking a second language goes a long way too.
Check out CIDA - http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/home
I know several people who as students have worked abroad and rec'd university credits in Switzerland, Oz, Germany and France.
lots of language schools around that are looking for people who can take being bound to a strict contract for 2 or more years. I've heard both good and bad stories about Asian language schools.

Sarah Palin Stepping Down As Alaska Gov. Running for Pres. 2012?

Don't know one thing about the book....but I did happen to catch her today on Oprah and I am no fan but I must say she certainly held her own.
She had a semi-legit response to the criticisms about her performance while on the campaign....apparently the McCain handlers were dressing her and telling her what to say and what to do....even what to eat....she wasn't allowed to be herself...oh my goodness!... imagine if she had really gone 'rogue' all the time?
She allowed it to happen and she admits to that. She had choices.
As for the election being lost because of her.... she was not going to take the fall, she said it didnt' matter what she did or didn't do the ticket was lost from the get go...due to the electorates want for a change.
I think she made a buck or two on this book in the contract with the publisher and I say good for her. I don't see her having what it takes to hold power, in intellectual knowhow is not there.

Choosing the Perfect Gift!
Posted:
11/16/2009 6:47:39 PM
I find giving money....cash so tactless....but somehow a Gift Card acceptable....lol
anyhow...for a stranger....not knowing their taste... I think a Coffee Card would be my answer. You don't have to load up a lot on the card if it is someone you don't know very well....and it allows you to follow the 'Limit' on the Secret Santa gift.
Gift cards from HMV, Chapters, Indigo, White Spot, Winner's are always a hit.
For a female friend....which I have only 3.... I prefer to shop yearound....and I tend to get fun items that I know they would like....items that I know they will use over and over an appreciate...and will remember who gave it to them with fond memories.
A very dear friend of mine never had any crystal stemware ....she loved the crystal that my mother bought for me.... so one Christmas I bought her a pair of crystal Pinwheel candlesticks...that was over 25 years ago....and she still uses them all the time. We buy candles and ornaments for each other...very unique gifts we find in our travels.
I have a favourite scarf a good friend bought for me... it wasn't a very expensive scarf but it was very unique and a lovely colour and can be worn as a shawl.... I wear it in the Fall and Winter months and always get plenty of compliments and get asked where I got it. She gave it to me 20 years ago and it is a cherished gift.
I like to buy gift baskets...it is fun to stay within budget and come up with neat ideas....for a guy I would stalk up on his fav coffee...a nice mug perhaps....a few magazines... his favourite candy or treat and a gift card for the grocery store or coffee shop and I might even throw in a nice pair of gloves or scarf if I can find a nice one from Winners.
Same with women's gift basket... I prefer to throw in items that people don't always splurge on themselves....nice bath bombs, soaps, bubble baths... a large good quality bath towel, nice slippers...and maybe a gift card for the book store.

I've met a lot of men who like the driving around town at midnight concept...but man..that is nuts to me.
I mean..what happens when baby gets use to that?.. snowstorm outside....can you even get out of the driveway?.... I don't think it is the best routine to establish.
again.. I wonder is it a digestive thing then...the baby more comfortable in an upright position in the carseat....why not put them in a swing then to rock to sleep.
babies and toddler, kids in general all go thru changes and growth spurts... hunger pangs even... and it will pass eventually. My perfect baby...sleep wise...well at age 3 months she developed colic and that was a nightmare...nightmare I almost went mad I never knew what hit us.
She is fine now.... some growth spurts still..... the smallest of all my children at birth..tiny. She is now 11...and 5' 8'' tall..... lol

I would miss it...but I could seriously walk away from it and be happy.
phones?... well I have children...and I discovered I do need my mobile.
we cut back on the telly...and we rarely watch it now... sadly no FoodNetwork and crazy programs....lol....but now we are reading a lot more.
internet...well only if we are doing research...and we could go to the library during operating hours.
ya...truly... I could do without it...I would miss all of you though.

Dogmatic as in Holier than Thou?
ya..well everyone has an opinion...beliefs... I respect them that they are conscience and believing in something.
but...then again I don't have to agree with them or their values, views...fath.
some are just regular Nutbars and CrackerJack cases...lol.... and then some go to the extreme....pass the Kool-Aid. Those... I worry about...and stay clear of.
me?... I just go with what I feel is right for me.

when you deal with a difficult boss

I'm with start looking for a new job.
some managers and bosses are looking to drive people nuts to get them so fed up that they quit.
I would say talk to HR...cos talking to this confusing boss is only going to make him up his antics.
tell HR that you are looking to pursue other options within the company... you are very happy working for them and look forward to many more years with them.
if the discussion of your current position comes up... keep it positive as possible...check out some self-help books in the library with good key phrases that HR uses...lol... on how to tactfully say there may be some communication issues or difference in work style with you and the current boss.
Keep it tactful... and don't slap that boss.
I know the economy is in a downward situation...but as an engineer you have more options than most. Think smart before you act.

Activity levels change.... baby is more active...lots going on in their little minds at night...and if they are on more solid food now... a lot in their tummy.
have you considered a nice warm bath for baby...followed by a 15 minute soothing massage...tummy rub?
I know I could go for a long warm bath and tummy rub to knock me out at night....
I'm serious though... check out the Indian Baby Massage books in the library...it is a soothing, yet firm massage... I think it helps the bowels and relaxes babies thoroughly.. I know my grandmother use to twist me into a pretzel in the old days....and it's made a comeback. My mom use to massage my kids like that...and it helped them relax and sleep.
all the best.

Are most single moms looking for a guy to care for them financially?

I am a single mom...and I would love to have a man in my life who is financially stable.
One that does not need me to financially support him on my own.
Someone who is responsible with money and is not a uber consumer.
I've always lived within my means....an I am teaching my children to discern their NEEDs from their WANTs.... know the difference and live your life accordingly.
I would expect a potential partner to understand this.
Not that I would turn my back on a man who has money...but I am not seeking a Sugar-Daddy or someone to support me and the children.

Single parent theme in Disney movies
Posted:
11/12/2009 5:20:33 PM
Mulan had both parents.
anyhow... I have 3 daughters...and Disney like Barbie dolls are fine...but let's not get to carried away now.
the theme that came to my attention arose when my middle daughter said to me one day that she didn't wanted to marry a Prince....not to be a Princess, but to become Queen!
so... I realized at that point...back in @ 2000...that there were a whole lot of Princesses out there...an always being rescued by a Prince....yikes!
well Mulan did rescue the Prince but that was an exception.
so....why the hell does the girl need to be rescued in all those movies? I mean.. I seem to recall that Lady was even rescued by the Tramp.......can someone confirm this?

Well...when I went to pick up the kids... I was met with a very indignant child....informing me that she was not SHELLFISH!
shellfish?...what about shellfish?..why would you be shellfish?
eh?...
Mama said I was Shellfish!
oh...okay. Mom...why did you call her shellfish?

::COMPELLED TO STEAL::
Posted:

A need to feel empowered?... I don't know.. perhaps a need to think you can do whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it?
or just for the thrill.... the possibility that you might get caught...and then what?...a confrontation with someone?
could be a cry for attention.....again only if you get caught.
I worked in Loss Prevention for a while in a major dept store....it's interesting the wide spectrum of characters that steal from a store and why they steal.
some are a legitimate I need to steal and resell the merchandise to feed my body with food or drink or drugs.
then there are the people who don't need the money.... but somehow feel it is acceptable to take whatever they want with no remorse....that is a weird way to think....very strange.
then you get the employees...who steal from the employer...for a variety of reasons....some because they think they are owed 'something'...for all the hard work they do....lol...really now..isn't that why they get paid weekly?
I just can't fathom stealing from anyone....not even Time at a punchclock for work...it's just wrong.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Ya.. I hear you.
thanks for all the feedback...all valid.
FYI... spent a week in the hospital with one kid aged 4 months old ...respiratory virus that damaged her lungs for life.
Same kid...age 2 ... e-coli from tainted tap water...told she would die within two weeks if her white blood cell count didn't go up. There were complications all along the way. Kid was pumped with antibiotics... as I stayed by her side.... blood tests @ 6 - 8 times a day on her.
yeah...so I have a child with a compromised immune system....building it up slowly over the years... flu of any sort can kill her if it sets in.
it's the pneumonia that will kill you btw...so damaged set of lungs don't help.
apparently I am over-reacting.

H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?
Posted:

My brother was diagnosed with H1N1 on Friday.
Saw him at dinner the previous day..he looked fine.
ya.. my kids saw him Friday afternoon.... in their words 'He looked like a zombie'.
sooooooooooo...anyhow...he is in isolation.... he lives with my elderly parents so I am very concerned. They were unable to get vaccinated the previous week because they were sick with the regular influenza virus.
so... sucks eh? Me and the kids are vaccinated but yup...it takes @ 8-10 days for the body to have immunity...so we are sticking close to home... washing hands with soap... only using the sanitizer stuff when we can't wash.
**** there was note at my doc's office last week...reccomendations *******
the notice stated that Tamiflu...which is the vaccine they give for the season flu apparently just lessens the symptoms...it does not prevent you from getting the flu.
**** Gargling with warm water and salt twice a day for 30 seconds works the same as taking Tamiflu*****
I swear that is what it read. The source was Shopper's Drugmart.

Jaws and other behaviour-altering movies.

Saw the movie Cry Freedom at the Ridge in Vancouver, the author Donald Wood was present at the event, he was still living in exile at the time.I got a chance to meet him.
the movie opened up my eyes to the world out there...beyond our borders to a far off land where there was a whole nation of people living under oppression an injustice.
I want my kids to know what is happening outside our borders...outside our safe zone and be aware of social issues in foreign lands. We can't hide under the covers and pretend all is good in the world.
The film made me open my eyes.

OY!.. Im back... and the thread is still alive eh?.
just to let you guys and gals know... I've been thinking about getting a dog recently... I really miss my boy Mags... he was a great dog and my buddy..my companion before I had my kids. He is now in doggy Heaven playing fetch all day cos that's what Aussie Sheps love to do!
It's been just over 2 years now that I lost him and I just haven't been able to think about getting another dog til now. But..the daily hassles of life...raising 3 kids...etc... I know I can't dedicate the time and energy for an addition to the family right now.
I might be overthinking things at this very moment...but... perhaps I am looking at taking the easy way ...the dog route rather than the relationship with a human route.
damn... I got to get out to more POF events eh?... meet some dawgs maybe...lol.

Okay... I have had a revelation here.....so...tell me...have I lost it or what?
I realized that in my quest....my fishing about in the Pond....that I have now started to veer away from looking for my 'soul' mate.....and I am now looking for a dog!
yes...I discovered that Chemistry thingy here on POF....last week...I mentioned it on another thread...and wow.... the men I am most compatiable with all have pics of their beautiful dogs.
so....I am thinking....my need for companionship.....a warm body.....perhaps is not a Man...but a Dog!
yes.... I am now contacting POFers....and asking for playdates with their pooch.... owner need not tag along.
I have even now listed the site on my Fav List on my computer as POD for quick reference.
Are you in need of a human for companionship?....think about it.
A dog does not talk back...does not give you attitude.... loves you unconditionally...an ideal mate! and snuggle up next to you on the bed and keep you warm too! Bonus!

Using a self-serve checkout at a supermarket.
Posted:

Just got back from my second trip of the day to the grocery.....grrrrrrrrrrr they didn't bag the main ingredient for my Beef Straganoff!.....okay...so went down to retrieve the meat...and it was funny as hell....there is a team of 3 pple maning the machines...and dusting them constantly...and wiping them down with anti-bacterial spray....lol.
not a good time to decide to install self-serve machines with a flu pandemic on the rise eh?
anyhow.... I don't like the machines....and I know someone at a company in TO that manufacturers them and sends staff out here to install. He acknowledged to me that yes, it is a replacement for a human unit.
I spent a good 10 minutes at Canadian Tire trying to scan in a second... a duplicate item...and the machine would not allow it...grrrrrrrrr.... the clerk had to come and scan...re-scan...and scan..over and over...and then go manually input the item...and then it still wouldn't allow me to buy the item. 10 Minutes!....now that is just plain silly.
ya... not going to use them.

The Ministry of Education in our province...of British Columbia...ie...like one of your states...the Ministry is not advocating the hand sanitizer in school....they want the kids to use soap and warm water. The Health units agree as sanitizers are a temporary fix and not as effective as hand washing.
ya...there has been a lot of schools shut down and I know of two school districts now that have closed all their schools because of the sheer number of children and teachers sick in whole communities.
a crew of cleaners dressed in overalls and masks like a mini hazmat team goes in to clean the schools if more than 10% of the school population is sick.
this H1N1 virus apparently stays alive on hard surfaces, ie.. desk, doorknobs, counters etc.. for up to 48 hours.
Many in our community are sick. What little we can do to stay put and not spread it more helps.

Nope... they are going to school...that week the 200 were sick.. I didn't find out til the kids were back in school... my tenant's kid was sick for days too I didn't know.
nope.... I send them to school with sniffy noses and sore throats.....we try to boost their immune system and they are not living a sheltered life....this H1N1 is spreading a bit much in my lil community right now so I am taking precautions.... like no big groups of huggin n kissin or big playgroups. One of my daughters is plays on a basketball team...we are keeping an eye on that.... many school activities are being monitored and the schools get wiped down by a team of cleaners if it has more than 10% of the students are off sick.
as I said..my brother has just been diagnosed with full blown H1N1 ...and he is in quarantine.
and NOPE...if there is someplace I want or have to be.... and the kids are sick.. I will not go. I would not take them out and compromise them. It just wouldn't cross my mind to even go.
I would never think of preventing others from carrying on their activities without us.... .we take a raincheck.
and as for if it matters what you say...yes, it does...because I can my question was is it an unreasonable request I made to my Ex?
I do want the feedback. I don't see any need for a personal attack of course...but...ya.. I do want feedback please.
Great, then why did you even start this thread...sigh.
to get your attention no doubt....

Not sure how many replies I can make on this post..but here goes.
I am basically keeping them cloistered as much as I can...yes...but not quarantined.
We are limiting our activities....and using caution..that is why we are vaccinated...so we can not be cloistered if indeed the vaccine will protect the kids.
I have a child with a compromised immune system and one with cold induced asthma...which means where a healthy child might get a cold or flu and shake it off in a few days... my kids are out for weeks and their lungs are full with fluid and the infection tends to settle in for a long while.
they are getting healthier as they grow up....but again I try to be cautious when I feel it is necessary.
over 200 kids and staff were sick a few weeks ago at the school, that week all 3 of my kids were sick...they were home for @3-4 days depending on the kid...and went back..the school actually asked that I not send the healthy kid back...cos there were so many others coming back too soon and getting sick again.
I've been thru a lot of with sick kids over the last 14 years.... so I don't think I am over-reacting ..and I don't think my request of not going to church this one Sunday was unreasonable.
