Hammertown Hoppers Patio Night-July 14th- The Thirsty Cactus
Posted: 7/14/2009 7:57:39 PM
Hi Rejay1414. There is a new group forming in Grimsby next week.

Professional Savvy Singles! (Niagara, Hamilton, Halton)
http://www.meetup.com/Professional-Savvy-Singles/

Unfortunately they picked a Tuesday night for the first meeting so it overlaps with the Hoppers.
I haven't met Renee yet so I don't know anything more about the group or what they intend to do. It would indeed be nice to have something to do further down the road towards Niagara.

Great party tonight.

"Nelson" aka Nedly

P.S.

Re the "Wine Tour". I'll ask my "cousin" for some advice on where to go. She used to run the tourist information system for all the wineries in Niagara.

Sorry Guys, she's married - to a big Cop.

should the US apologize for slavery
Posted: 1/22/2009 9:58:08 PM
My 4th great grandparents Elizabeth Buck and Charles Hibbard. They were United Empire Loyalists who were forced at gunpoint out of their homes as children in 1778. Elizabeth was forced to walk secretly to freedom through enemy lies from Philadelphia to Ontario at age 3 along with 5 women and 31 other children completely unaided. 50 years later Charles and Elizabeth took in a slave family who had escaped from the U.S. to Canada in 1830 using the same route. They fed and clothed them for two years and paid for the children's education out of their own pockets.

The father of the slave family Josiah Henson learned to read and write with my family's help. He wrote a book about his life and it became a best seller. He went on lectures and toured the U.S. and Canada and made a good life for himself . His life story was later novelized and became one of the best selling novels of the 19th century and it's powerful story started a real war which ended slavery.

The book was "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

My question is do I apologise for slavery or do I demand all free blacks pay tribute to me as my family never got a dime back from Josiah or the other slaves that were freed due to my ancestors work. Charles and Elizabeth died poor and lie in unknown graves They never got any retribution for the lands they lost in the war from the U.S. goverment - even though the peace treaty required it.

Do I cut off my nose to spite my face? At some point somebody has got to grow up and get a life and stop demanding special treatment.

For a more traditional piece try "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes". It was one of my father's favorite pieces to play on the organ. Sheet music and mp3 are available online free.

Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself but thee!

Then for the reception there is always Spike Jones' variation on Patti Page's

Personal injury: should I milk it?
Posted: 1/14/2009 8:59:01 AM
I witnessed a proffesional wrestler friend of some fame deliberately try the same stunt. He chipped a glass himself and cut his lip and bragged to his friends as to what he was about to do. He made quite a fuss over it to the waitress and manager and everyone around him demanding retribution.

Needless to say we booted him out of our singles social group on his ass. His career went down the tubes as well as word spread of his behaviour with that incident and others. Nobody likes a crybaby and even worse a crybaby who makes a mountain out of a mole hill.

I've got a 10" scar down my back after a suffering major fall in a church. Faulty structure and rotting wood caused a section of a support structure I was standing on to collapse. I fell 8' and ripped open my back. My grandfather had installed that structure 80 years before and it had held until it rotted away from water damage. I never gave it a thought to sue or file insurance claims. It was part of my doing business. My fault for not looking at what I was standing on was still safe. Sh1t happens. Suck it up man.

Perhaps your friends were actually testing you to see if you could take it like a man.

I'm in business with my older sister and we are often mistaken for husband and wife. when people ask she simply says "No we are not married we just used to live together. "
My reply line is "I left her some time ago for another woman."

The only problem is I'm now looking for another woman and everyone assumes my sister is my ex!!

I was just given 3,000 video tapes. Mostly old classic B&W movies and some terrific old comedies.

I'll get back to you in a few years. :-))))))

I'm hardly watching any live TV now. Even the specialty channels are nothing but reruns. How many times per week can you watch the same episode of the same show on the same channel? Even worse, watch the same show on 5 different networks! ZZZZZZZZ!!!! After midnight there is hardly any channel below #40 that is not a infomercial and above that repeats of the same shows that were already shown 3 times that day.

The one that gets me is the "We are running out of water" B.S.

Supposedly we are using up all the water in the world. Soon there will be none left. the oceans will run dry!! Too many plants and too many people are drinking up all the water!!

When even a respected magazine like Discover has a major article on it you know the world is full of "the sky is falling" pseudo-scientists who have managed to get degrees in idiocy and lunacy and minors in conspiracy theories.

Funny thing is nowhere in any of the articles do they mention the best way to get fresh water is from rain - and where does most rain come from?? Water that has evaporated from plants and animals!

Still married and credit question
Posted: 5/3/2008 11:15:30 PM
In Ontario there is no spousal debt. Everyone is independent unless you jointly share a debt or asset such as a credit card, bank account or a home. Then you can get hit with all the cost of the debts. ( 1/2 in the case of a home)

Thus if you separate get a separate credit card, bank account and other financial things independent of your ex.

I lost my dog of 12 years just a week ago. She died in my arms of a heart attack. She went so fast I didn't have time to get her to the Emergency Vet. Just 3 hours earlier we had been playing outside as we always did and she was perfectly fine.

She was my first dog, and I'll miss her forever. I can't afford another dog and I don't have the time to raise one. It's so darn quiet around the house now. That's what I notice the most - the silence.

People should actually read the "NANFAN TREATY" which is the one the Six Nations is so fired up about.

Interestingly the (Five-Seaven) Six Nations openly admit the land they got was stolen from it's rightful owners the Neutrals and Hurons whom they exterminated in a Genicide over the beaver trade!!!!
( Beaver pelts in the 1700's being worth more than oil today- so does that make Genicide ok??)

The other thing that makes the treaty so silly on both sides is that NEITHER side was in possession of the lands in question at the time of the Treaty. Southern Ontario was under the complete control of the French, Ojibwa, Ottawa and Potawatomis natives, who had driven the (Five) Six Nations out of the area 5 years earlier. The Natives even admit that in the treaty!

The Six Nations claim they took in the survivors of the people they killed and made them part of their tribes which makes them rightful owners of the land.

Funny thing is Every "Native Person" I ever meet wears white man's clothes, speaks english, drives a car and lives in a white man style building and most likely has white man's genes in his blood. . . Sounds like the Native Person is pretty much been taken into the "White man's tribe" even more than any Huron or Neutral etc. would have admitted 40 years after a war.

Interestingly a person can have as little as 1/16, 289 North American Indian ( a single 12th great grandmother who was Mohawk) and still be officially METIS (people of mixed blood) and be president of the local Metis Association and claim special rights !

About 1/4 of all North Americans or more are genetically Metis! as are almost all "Natives" "Metis" are now the the largest ethnic group in Canada.

Thus we are looking at a treaty that was as legal as a "Deed to the Brooklyn Bridge" paid for with a rubber cheque.

Neither side was truthful.

P.S. I'm a part native North American myself.

The loss of a pet
Posted: 4/25/2008 10:17:43 AM
I lost my Sheltie Marsha Wednesday night.

We had been playing together when I took out the garbage earlier. I left her out on her line with her best buddy my cat and went inside. It was a very nice night so I left them for a few hours as they love sitting the the yard.

When I went to get them in for the night Marsha was unable to get up. I took one look and knew she was at her end. I carried her into the house and checked her over. She was gasping for breath and was unable to lift her head. A heart attack I'm sure I rushed to get a box to carry her across town to the emergency night vet but when I returned seconds later I realized it was hopeless. She was fading fast. I held her in my arms sang songs and brushed her as she faded into a coma. Her breath slowed down after a while and she was gone.

For twelve years and four months she slept next to me. She was a St John's Pet Visitation Dog and worked in nursing homes. She knew every adult, kid dog, and cat in the neighborhood and loved them all.

I'll never be able to replace her.

Help!! Car Stuck in Park
Posted: 4/14/2008 8:50:37 PM
Don't know much about a car stuck in a park.

But I can tell you about 3 lawyers stuck in a farmer's field full of mud.

Yup. Yesterday 3 Ontario Government lawyers got stuck in a field well up past the doors in a rented car. They were out looking at a construction site and went too far past the " do not enter - keep out - no trespassing - go back you fools" signs.

Even the CAA/AAA refused to help them. So the youngest one - a girl had to walk through muddy fields 1/4 mile to get a tractor from a farmer to pull them out.

Make them go both ways like the rest of us drivers do. Two lanes of traffic. Pass only when you can.
Have you really got the balls to pass on a hill with a curve at 175 mph?
And at every other lap you have to chug down a beer.

No wait a minute! That's the normal way of driving in my town on a Saturday Night.

I knew there was a reason why I stay home at night.

In Ontario the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 requires public disclosure of all Public Service Employees who receive more than $100,000.00 per year.

You can see names and wages here.

Effectively every Hamilton school principal makes over 100,00 per year.
10 % of Hamilton police officers recieve more than $ 100,000.00 per year.
The base salary for a first class constable is $75,868.

Garbagemen, bus drivers and other unionized city workers usually get paid well too.

Check here for statstics on what you can expect as basic salary's in various jobs. Overtime and some other benefits are not included.

Note:
$100,000 per year is about 5x the minimum wage in Ontario.

My Dad's favourite. . .

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

30 years gone and yet he's still there beside me every day as I work with his tools. The exact same tools his father used, and the man who taugh him our trade and his father before him. 147+ years same company, same tools. I guess Ol' Mr. Spencer did somethin' right and passed on more than just a few pithy words to those who followed him.

Other than #5 ALL of the above jobs are much higher than average paying jobs.

Security is probably the lowest job people get. Most nightwatchmen and security guards are unemployable ex-cons and those who are one step above welfare.
That's according to the official "job classifications" used by the government to place people in new jobs. I know because I used to work in the retraining field and had to help figure out what jobs "injured workers" could do after they recovered.

All of the jobs in 1-4 pay more than 50K per year. Many well over 100k.

Somebody hasn't done their research! "Cut and pasting" does that to people.

P.S. A Registered Nurse can make over $200,000 per year working in a hospital!

I'd rather have little baby faced 5' 3" Audie Murphy standing alone on my side than John Wayne, Hulk Hogan, Diesel, Bruce, Ar'nold and Rambo and all of the rest of the Hollywood Tough Guys together defending me.

A now famous actor once challenged Audie to a "Showdown" to prove which one was the faster draw. The winner would get the lead role in the movie.

Audie just grinned and said "OK, But we'll use real bullets". - He wasn't fooling.

Never mess with a guy that even Gen. Patton saluted.

Why Do Some Radio Stations Play The Same Songs?
Posted: 4/8/2008 6:26:12 PM
When I was 13 I came home with a Top 40 chart for the week. My Dad looked at it and shook his head. "I've ever heard of any of these groups." he said. So we went through the list together. Dad still was not convinced that any of the songs were familiar despite being an avid radio listner.

He then pointed out "How can a song by an unknown become #1 on the charts less than a week after it was released? "

"Think about it he said." I did and ever since I've never followed any "Top 10 whatevers" as my method of looking for entertainment. It truly is all hype and promotion. Nothing you see on mainstream entertainment is truly based on real quality. It's all just what the promoters want you to buy.

Hip -hop Rap whatever you want to call it. Is it music? Is it good? Is it really worth listening to? So why does it sell?? HYPE!!!

Is it odd that I now prefer to listen to a station that carries nothing but old music from the 30's 40's and 50's and has actual live announcers who talk about each song and it's perfomer? I don't think so.

As long as the Olympic committee picks unstable/unliked countries to hold the Olympics we will have problems.

1956 Melbourne Olympics
To protest against the Soviet Union's invasion of Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland withdrew from Melbourne.

In response to the Suez Crisis, Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon announced they would not compete.

The People's Republic of China boycotted the Melbourne Games to retaliate against Taiwan's participation under the name "Formosa."

A total of 67 nations competed.

1976 Montreal Olympics
More than 20 African countries boycotted Montreal after New Zealand was allowed to compete. The IOC was pressured to ban New Zealand because it sent its national rugby team, the All Blacks, to play in South Africa. South Africa was banned from the Olympics from 1964 to 1988 due to its apartheid policies. In 1976, the IOC defended its decision to include New Zealand by stating that rugby was not an Olympic sport.

Taiwan also did not participate because Canada refused to recognize it as an independent nation.

Only 92 countries participated in the Montreal Games, down from 121 countries that competed in Munich 1972.

1980 Moscow Olympics
The 1980 Moscow Games saw the largest boycott in Olympic history. More than 60 nations, including Canada, refused to compete in an American-led protest against the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. As a result, only 81 countries participated.

1984 Los Angeles Olympics
To counter the boycotts of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the Soviet Union and 14 of its Eastern Bloc partners refused to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics. It cited concerns over the safety of Soviet athletes, but some saw it as revenge for the Moscow boycott.

Iran and Libya also refused to participate due to tensions with the United States. Iran was the only country to boycott both the 1980 and 1984 events.

Despite this, 140 countries took part in the Los Angeles Games.

1988 Seoul Olympics
When South Korea refused to let North Korea co-host the Games, North Korea pulled out. Cuba and Ethiopia also boycotted the event.

159 countries competed.

Then we can also add Yugoslavia which fell apart soon after the Olympics and Caanda which suffered major problems with Quebec after it's massive overspending on the Olympics drew the wrath of the Rest Of Canada.

The original games were hardly any better run!

Why we shouldnt eat meat.
Posted: 4/8/2008 1:32:14 PM
" Only thing I wanna know is what'll be the next category of food that'll get protested against? I doubt people'll stop at just meat, there'd bound to be another type of food activists will voice their concerns over. "

Actually there is.

Potatos rice and grain products, the main foods of vegetarians have been postively linked to the rise in type 2 diabetes. Carbs/starches are deadly for diabetics.

By cutting these foods out of one's diet the odds of developing diabetes drops dramaticly. And in many cases people with severe diabetes have been cured simply by stoppping the veggie diets and going back to a more meat based diet.

This is a major movement towards eating meat and many scientists have endorsed it. The huge rise in diabetes in Native North Americans has been clearly linked to the change to a veggie/grain diet from the tradition mixed one of mostly meat and berries.

"Vegitarianism is like tattoos- So 10 years ago." A fad that is now fading away.

R.I.P Jake.... The officer shouted at least twice that he was going to shoot

Actually it was Tony who was shot. But those jungle bunnies all look alike anyways so who cares. ;-)

A grumpy 140lb adult chimp is like a gorrilla on 'roids and angel dust..
Not somebody you can easily calm down. And certainly not somebody to wrestle with.

That's why you never see adult chimps in TV or the movies. They are just too nasty. Gorrilla's are very peacefull creatures.

Best truly free sites on the web.

www.familysearch.org (the Mormons - enormous databases + 1881 UK census)
www.rootsweb.com ( mailing lists and giant databases - Ancestry.com's "free stuff".)
www.cyndislist.com ( If Cyndi hasn't found it, it's not on the web.)
www.automatedgenealogy.com (Canadian census records)

The above 4 sites will keep any person busy for years.

Unique home ideas
Posted: 4/4/2008 9:22:44 PM
A quick thought to those planning the home of the future. Think about putting conduits and outlets all around the house for pulling wires and cables through.

Who would have thought 50 years ago that everybody would be wired for sound/tv and the Interent today.

Next year there will be a new toy for us to play with and we will need wires to run it.

And for those who thing Wireless will be everything in the future. Remember we are already seeing powerfull movements to ban radio waves as they may be causing us serious health problems.

Want a less junky future house? Have a place for those wires to go!

Wierd things our pets eat
Posted: 4/4/2008 9:10:42 PM
I had a cat that ate an entire coffee cake with carmel syrup poured all over it.
Another cat loved eating an entire bannana loaf.
A third one loved tea.

The dog loves eating kitty poo. YUCK!

By the way chocolate and onions really are a NO-NO for dogs and cats- they can cause serious or fatal heart racing.

Anybody notice that the new Governor of New York came out a few days after he was appointed and admitted that he had had an affair while in office and had partied with hookers as well??

Public opinion? Zzzzzzzzzzz!

Are there any Classic Sci Fi movie buffs out there?!?!/
Posted: 4/4/2008 8:42:06 PM
I was always a fan of "Day of the Triffids" The original was the best version.

Man creating "Frankenplants" as cheap sources of oil turn into semi-intelligent animal like creatures that hunt people . Most of the modern "post apocolyptic zombies take over the earth" movies come from this story.

The original story however was based on the real life horror of the "Giant Hogweed" a noxious plant that when touched gives off a very toxic poison that burns flesh. It was imported into Europe in the 19th century and is now a major pest worldwide. John Wyndham wrote the book in the 1951 and envisioned the dangers of bio-fuel crisis and genetic engineering for profit gone wild long ago.

Depressing news: anti-depressants don't work.
Posted: 4/4/2008 7:58:27 PM
Having lost somebody who was the most important person in my life to "Death of Personality" I can attest that anti-depressents don't always work. I watched a young vibrant integlligent lady with a great professional career turn into a permanent zombie from the overprescription of anti-depressents.

She was under the supervised care of top notched physicians who gave her overdoses of drugs for years in an "experimant" to see if they would work. They didn't, so they just increased the dosages over and over again over theyears fo so called "Treatment" despite her objections , her friends and family's objections and mine.

She ended up at 4x the LETHAL doseages of 6 different anti-depressants simaltaniously More than 10x more than Nicole Smith was ever on and in the intensive physicatric care ward for weeks to dry out.

The results? She now lives on $1,000 a month welfare in a group home apartment setting with other brain injured people, and has major bouts of derpression and nightmares such that she is often hospitalized.

Today she is incapable perfoming any job and never will. She is not the same person I new. She never will be. Anti-depressants killed her mind. The doctors admit, that but won't take any responsibility even though she took the prescribed medications "as directed" and "as prescribed". It's not their fault it permanently destroyed her brain cells.

I was there, I watched it happen. My fault was I didn't stop it sooner when I saw what stupidity was going on. I trusted the "Professionals and their "Miracle Cures".

"Death of Personality" has been called the worst punishment ever devised by man.

It's true, it is.

Going Green, are we just posers?
Posted: 4/4/2008 7:23:28 PM
So we turned all of our grain, rice and corn crops into bio-fuel. Guess what folks. As of his very moment there ia a worldwide famine going on.
Fact:
We are eating more "grain products" worldwide than we produce for the first time in history.
( forget historical famines - they were all localized events where plenty of food was available elsewhere but nobody could get at it. Today's famjnes are worldwide.)

Fact Bio-fuel has almost doubled in price in the past two years. Making it far more expensive to produce than any other form of energy.

Fresh Corn is now 5 cobs for $4.00 in stores! (Today's price in a major chain store)
Wheat, rice, corn and other grains have doubled in price in the past few months worldwide. (bought any bread recently??)

Meat prices are climbing as fast as animal feed costs increase.

Diesel Oil used in big trucks has now passed gasoline in price. It now costs over $1,000.00 to fill the tanks of an average 18 wheeler. That's $4,000.00 per week for the average trucker. ( Todays' national news)

The cause?? War, Drought? Famine? Overpopulation? War?

Nope

The big oil companies have bought up all the farm lands around the world and are now making "Bio-fuel". which requires the burning more underground petroleum oil to manufacture than is produced in bio-fuel.

We've fallen for all the hype.

Most people honestly believe "The Day After Tomorrow" was a good factually based movie.

Someday somebody needs to listen to the little boy whispering. . .

"But the emperor has no clothes."

It's about time people stopped whinning like 5 year olds on the playground.

"Johnny called somebody a bad name! Boo Hoo Hoo!!!!"

I got past that stage in kindergarten.

There are a lot of sissy's out there that need to grow up.

And for those out there who are taking offence at my remarks. I say

"So What are you going do about it? Go tell your mommy?"

Sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me. A lesson many out there forgot to learn in preschool.

Nan ya nan ya nann ya

Or as a former Liberal Prime Minister said on TV while giving the world the middle finger "Fuddle Duddle"

The New Season Of LOST
Posted: 4/3/2008 9:34:46 PM
I think Naomi is our secret helper on the ship. We were to assume it was Micheal who opened the door but I feel Naomi is still too important a character to just have in a few scenes. She did survive the fall and recovered very quickly. She took a knife in the back and was assumed dead and yet crawled off and recovered well then too before "dying" once more. Then there was the focus on her being returned to the ship. They made a big deal about that and her eyes were open when she was carried to the helicopter. She looked pretty good for a corpse who had been lying in tropical heat for many hours.
I think like Locke, Mr. Happy, Micheal, the One Eyed Russian and some others she can't die either.
