Date counter - and standing up dates.

Re #11: The phone doesn't help. Out of the last 4, two of them I spoke to on the phone (one of them for over 30 minutes) within 48 hours of the time we were to meet in person, and they still failed to show. I even called when the person would be only 30 minutes late (had she shown up) but got voicemail instead. Just what more can I do when I have talked to them and they verbally agree to the meeting?
People like that deserve some sort of negative feedback so as to warn others. I am really sick of the lack of common courtesy that seems to exist in our society now when it comes to things like this, or any of the other games and general bullshit that women are playing on men today (it probably is a two-way street with some men, but I have never stood anyone up).
Re #10: Well, can you say **** YOU any stronger to me than with your leading statement? In all my 3.5 years here, only ONE woman from PoF actually followed through with meeting me, and she was a scam-artist. I've contacted and messaged several hundred but absolutely no one here is serious about anything resembling a relationship. ...And I thought that this was supposed to be a nice place, with nice people who really wanted to meet others. However, it seems as if everyone only cares about themselves and **** everyone else.

Nowhere did I suggest that one report what happened beyond whether you both showed up and maybe an OPTIONAL cursory view of whether it was worth your time. The point of the idea is to be able to identify the FAKE profiles and people that have no intention of ever meeting anyone yet set up meetings (as practical jokes?). That's why the first three questions address that. If people are uncomfortable with the rest, then don't implement those. I'm flexible in my suggestion.
I certainly in no way suggested a minute-by-minute report of what happened. I believe that my suggestion to leave out an "open text" section addressed that.
PoF does have people on here, in addition to the scammers it attracts, that simply want to play games and mess with others. Would you rather have the status-quo of not having them exposed for what they are? I'm really sick and tired of these games (e.g. being stood-up) and wanted something done about it. If you don't like my idea, then suggest something else. This is a problem that I feel needs to be addressed.

distance between users (or PoF events)
Posted:
4/6/2009 7:51:52 PM
I think that something is wrong with the distance calculator. I know that it is based on what some internal database thinks where the center of each U.S. zip-code is located. However, it clearly has errors:
I just received a "party message" for a party in Long Beach, CA. The message said I received it because "I'm within
10km
of the location." Actually, my zip code is 27 MILES (43 km) from the location (90802 vs. 90049) as birds fly (34 mi/55km driven/by road). I don't mind receiving party messages "in my area", but based on this message, I'm nowhere near the area....
Maybe the site needs a more accurate zip-code => long/lat database map. 43km distant is not within a 10km radius of the event.
(I know that the driven distance is accurate because at one time, I worked in that zip code at a location 1 mile east of the party location.)

I agree that there could be abuse. That's why for the first part of this I indicated that
both
parties had to "opt in." I don't deny that there are situations where the answers could be inconsistent (one party shows up and says the other didn't when he/she did, etc.), but there are ways of detecting those.
My concern in posting the idea was that apparently there are people who repeatedly stand others up - and it would be nice if they received some sort of negative feedback for such actions. However, I also note that such people would not be likely to "opt in" in the first place. Conversely, those who do repeatedly show up would accumulate positive feedback.
I'm only suggesting very basic questions like:
1) Did you show up? Y/N
2) Did your date show up? Y/N
3) Did your date look like his/her photo(s)? Y/N/maybe.
and maybe a subjective question or two:
4) Were you impressed? Y/N/Maybe
5) Would you see this person again? Y/N/Maybe.
At NO point would I suggest any open text. The combination of questions 1 and 2 would have to match from both people's answers to be considered valid. Although one could also rate the event from 1 to 10, I believe such goes beyond my suggestion. Rating the other person in any way is clearly beyond the scope of my suggestion.
We all know that there are fakes and flakes on here (and on any dating site), but no way to weed them out. As things are now, a person who stands someone (else) up is perfectly free to repeat such an action many times and not get penalized for it. Clearly, such a person should not be a
serious member
. Meanwhile, a person who arrives for every date scheduled should be considered such. Why not have the title mean something?
RE #4: I'm also on match and have not heard of that.

Interesting mix of manners. Cutting them with a knife is actually appropriate if they are too big to be bitesize, but clearly things dropped off the deep end from there. It's worse if people at other tables noticed.
I agree with the last post -- sounds like YouTube material (of what not to do).

Date counter - and standing up dates.

Idea: Would it be possible to add some sort of "it's a date" counter feature to profiles. When two people on this site agree to meet - a time and place, they click on an additional box in the e-mail screen that says "It's a date". BOTH people have to click on the box for it to count. After the date, they indicate somehow how things went.
My initial thought was to have a "stand-up" counter - to count how many times a person has stood-up other people by not showing up to an agreed-upon date. Many dating sites (all that I have seen) don't really have a feedback method for the quality of a date (or if it happened). PoF could be the first.
For display on a profile, at the admin's discretion, instead of diplaying the raw count of dates arranged and dates stood-up, a percentage ratio might be nicer.
This idea came from the discussion in:

Whats Happening To Dating?

Re #37: So what does that say about men (who outnumber women) on this site?
I think that the largest problem is that no one is sincere about dating anymore. They just want to be able to say that they're looking when they're really not interested in anyone. I've been here on this site for 3.5 years and I've only met one person in person in all that time.

In all seriousness, except for the IE category, people really need to make an effort to have a profile worth reading. The really annoying ones are the profiles that are left as "I'll write this later" for more than a week.

The Second Amendment exists as part of our system of "checks and balances." Anything in furtherance of a right is a good thing.
For those that don't understand my first sentence: Our system of government is supposed to have its power originate from the people. In that respect, the people (well, non-felons) have certain rights to control the government: The right to redress greviences (in the First), the right to vote, and the right to REVOLT -- to replace in its entirety a government that has become too oppressive, just like King George III became in the 1770's with the tea tax and other assorted issues. The purpose of the Second Amendment is to give the people the means to revolt should they deem it be necessary. The "militia" is NOT the national guards of the states; it is literally a citizen army formed from the people itself. Such misinformation is spread by the gun-control lobby.
Just remember this: The gun-control lobby ultimely comes down to stripping people of rights and granting government full power over its citizenry - about as un-democratic as one can get. They are the enemies of freedom. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have safety around firearms, but those who advocate complete elimination of firearms, if it weren't for the First Amendment, should be rounded up and shot by firing squad!

stupid

I'm glad that the recent Los Angeles City Measure B finally failed. Although I agree with "going green," one should not mandate by statute minimum levels as that may lead to waste of taxpayer funds in a last minute effort to reach that minimum. I would prefer that any attempt by LA DWP be accomplished via a cost-effective method, not "any method necessary" to comply with some local ordinance passed by voters.
Along another topic:
We still need to drill here at home to get disconnected from the middle east ....
I disagree. We should bleed them dry, and when we are the only world source of oil left, we sell it back to them at 10x (or more) the current going rate and get all those decades of wealth back. We should drill domestically but leave it all in the ground, ready to go, but unused for the moment.

Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services?
Posted:

I don't think this has been asked: For those who got
complmentary
upgrades, for how long is their membership upgraded?
If I wanted to pay for the service, I'd be on
match
. (Oh, I forgot; I'm there too. The quality of the participants isn't any better.) Put simply, payment by the users doesn't relate in any way to the quality of seriousness of the users.
BTW, there are undoubtedly others like me that use our own DNS overrides (for "Windows," hosts.txt files) so we don't ever see any advertisements, so all the google-adsense stuff is basically disabled and the admin gets
nothing
. The worst thing is when a PAID service throws advertisments at its users. Go there and kiss your site goodbye as users leave for good.

You forget (or don't know) about the little room in San Francisco at the AT&T building (plus 6 other cities) where the NSA has the special tap room that sniffs ALL the Internet traffic - probably including this very message (which may even set off a level 1 alarm in their system), completely bypassing the FISA Court and the 4th Amendment.
As to the current deals and such, we're learning with this latest controversy that Congress didn't even know what was and wasn't in it....

RE #41 by

: I don't care for your attitude regarding harassment in the workplace. Have you ever been involved in such a situation? I have - and I ended up suing the woman (who did end up leaving our employer) and prevaling two decades ago (1990). It's not a trivial matter, nor overstated.
RE #46: So many ways? Name one, other than these sites, that acutally works? I've volunteered. I've joined some organizations regarding some topic of interest in common, etc. Once, I even went to an AA meeting, even though I don't drink. At all these places, I never found anyone who admitted they were there just to meet new people. I find that such is just another delusion people want to believe in so as not to admit that their lives are really empty.
My last comment above might be part of what's wrong with dating today too.

Nostalgia Thread - favorite tv shows from when you were a kid
Posted:
3/14/2009 7:54:31 PM
Space:1999 wasn't that bad in the first season, but it went downhill in later shows. At least it was well done sci-fi. Most sci-fi and fantasy programs strangely fall into two categories: Well done or completely cheesy and unbelievable.
All of the Kroft stuff for kids - cheesy but fun. Mr. Wizard was fun, but who was the scientist in the 1950's (before my time) who'd blow things up on TV?
RE #100: "Our gang" is properly titled Little Rascals. My mom knew Jackie Cooper personally. I knew Barbara Feldon and still know Burt Nodella (the producer) from Get Smart, but never met Don Adams. My parents and I were invited to the set of Roots and met Alex Hailey in 1975. I never saw any of the "Megland Kiddies" stuff from about 1928-1930, but my mother was one of them for a while.
Most of what I would list has already been mentioned. However, there's one thing (not a show) that hasn't been mentioned. Remember in the 1960's when it "was a big thing" to have a show in color? Speaking of color, I remember Flip Wilson's show. It was rare then to have a non-white comedian, let alone on prime time TV with an "open" show.
For some reason in the early 1980's, I got hooked on "General Hospital" - including that whole "Luke & Laura" thing.

I think the largest problem with dating today is the "liberation of
womyn
"(sic - and yes, I mean that spelling) from the 1970's onward. Basically, a guy nowadays who approaches a woman to hit on her is labelled a pervert (or in the workplace, a sexual harrasser). Dating is no longer an equal playing field. It was so much easier for the caveman - one club hit and it's done!
Dating online makes this even worse - in that everyone looks for Mr/Miss perfect, not just Mr/Miss acceptable. I also think it's now an excuse - in that everyone can say, "well, I'm looking. I have X profiles on X web sites and I still can't find anyone." I'm not so certain that people on here even want to find someone -- they'd rather play games.

OK, so it's still illegal federally, and although I'm not involved in or with drug enforcement, I haven't heard any difference in the illegal trafficking of it or price, etc.... Of course, the medical user isn't the recreational user, so perhaps that's why there's no change noted.

RE #52: As far as the "Bush tax cuts" go and rates, those rates apply to those with income $250k and above. Those aren't the benefits I'm talking about.
The AMT isn't as complicated as it sounds. Congress just likes to make it sound complicated. It's basically a flat tax.
The "stimulus deal" is an economic fraud. Banks aren't lending more than they would without it, and that was supposed to be one of its major purposes. There's no accountability.

RE #47:
What is your source for that claim?
1) Certain expiring benefits in the tax code that the current administration is letting expire.
2) AMT (the alternative minimum tax). Really hits property owners, as state/local taxes are NOT deductible under it. This one is the real killer as it resets in 2009 back to 2000 levels.
3) The charities I historically contributed to have gone out of business. This is the easiest one to fix, but requires money (or property) on hand, not merely owed.

Is serious member the best name for this feature?
Posted:

Fine if this site wants to recognized PAID members in some way, but I believe that the name chosen to identify this "feature" is a misnomer. Just because someone hasn't paid (either they are unaware, chose not to, or can't afford to) doesn't mean that they are "not serious" in trying to find a relationship. I think that a different name for this recognition is in order. Unless someone can suggest a better name that everyone likes, I put forward a simple one: "Paid member."
(Although I changed the title of my posting, the topic remains the same -- so I kept it in the thread.)

One of the larger problems is that the punishment(s) aren't severe enough. Too many users get go to to "rehabilitation" which in itself is a joke on the system. Someone suggested to me that traffickers should be executed. Change the law like that and that should eliminate the casual user who will no longer be able to afford it. The rest get purged from society - and no more problem.

Only once - an absolutely wonderful first date, where the second was set before we went our separate ways home. However, it turned out the whole thing was part of her scam as I found out 9 months later when she tried to extort me for money.
As for other meetings, I've been stood up 4 times (including twice where I talked with the woman on the hone the day before!), met one with whom I shared no chemistry (so it was also our last), and one hooker, who asked me if I knew her rates about 3 minutes after the initial meeting. This is over the past four years as I started (on another site) online dating about May 2005.
Summary: 7 experiences - 1 neutral and 6 bad, in 3.75 years.
If it helps, I am in the Los Angeles area, AKA "Dating Hell."

The California RE market
Posted:
3/9/2009 7:45:58 PM
[I had been busy for a while with work, but now I'm back.]
How do illegal aliens get government services? With their social security numbers - the ones that they bought on the black market so they can work, of course. Back when I worked for the IRS, sometimes we saw enough of them (the buyers) that we were able to identify the sellers and send the firearm-carrying agents after them. This whole mess was one of about 5 reasons why dependents' SSNs became a requirement on tax returns about 1988.
The pool of SSNs is about 750 million entries. We have about 300 million people. Since 1962, 83.5 million SSNs have been retired due to death of the holder (the "SSDI" database on genealogy web sites accesses this). I don't know how many holders died between 1936 and 1962. Some holders don't have their deaths reported to SSA. There's probably about 250M unissued numbers in the current pool.
California's problem - revised: On July 1, 2009, the sales tax for Los Angeles County will become 9.75% (+1% statewide on April 1, and +0.5% on July 1 for Measure R for 30 years). Our local unemployment has now crossed 10%. On today's news was the demise (or reduction) of the auto collision repair industry. People are collecting their insurance checks but paying their living expenses with the money instead of getting their cars fixed. This sort of contraction of the economy will make things worse.
I don't expect a turn-around until 2010.

Just by whom is this person expecting to be contacted? This user filters out those seeking the category (s)he has selected. Should this be reported as a "nonsense profile?"
Above, it was said that people should understand the "IE" category. Obviously NOT! If I were to send her a note saying that it looks like she picked the wrong category (a HELPFUL) act, I get banned by the filter w/r to other users. An unintended consequence, but a really stupid one. Fortunately, I know, but someone else out there might not.

Logging out and back in worked. Strange. To me, that does imply a bug somewhere.
As much of a Bug in thats the very first Step you should take when you have Pic Upload Trouble. You are the only one so far having this Bug with an outdated, malware-prone Browser / Ticketoride

RE:12 - Well excuse me for having been involved in law enforcement (a past occupation). I am quite aware that there are some who won't date cops or feds. That's their (or your) choice. Society has rules, and as long as we have people who break the rules, we will need people to enforce them. Although it skipped a generation or two, I have 3 consecutive generations of lawmen in my ancestry (2 DAs and a career sheriff).
I didn't say that I corresponded with hookers on a regular basis. However, that doesn't mean that I haven't recognized them from their photos or other local knowledge I have about them (or can easily find). The one I met here was unknown to me at the time. I found out about 9 months later when I started investigating her after witnessing her commit a felony (not sex-trade related). BTW, the category the latter one chose was "dating," which she changed to "friends" 3 months after meeting me. She closed that profile, but has another, hidden one that she shares with her pimp to communicate with people on PoF.
There's one on this service right now that I've reported to the admin (over a year ago) that has "other relationship" with photos taken directly from her hooker web site, complete with the watermark on the photos which is the site's domain name. The profile doesn't mention her "work activity" whatsoever, so perhaps she was allowed to remain for that reason.

RE: 14 - And what's wrong with me posting a photo with a PET? Many women like to know that a man is pet friendly. I don't see anyone bashing you because you include your dog in your photo. Just because my choice of a pet wasn't one of the top 2 (dog or cat) doesn't mean that I'm eccentric or not mainstream. You may as well have said F U to me with your comment.
-----
RE: 13 - In 90% of the cases, I would agree. However, as noted by reply #10, I'm not the only person who has seen the minority view I noted in my earlier reply. "Activity partner" could just as easily be construed to mean "IE" if the user lists sex among his/her interests. "Hang out", "friends", and the former category of "short-term" (removed some time ago) have also been clearly used by IE seekers to get around the filter..
I have also found that some put that merely to get attention. However, when it comes to actually dating, they're more inclined to a dinner+movie than going to bed. They're just saying that because they think that's what men want to hear in order to pick them for a date.
Are you all really naive enough to believe that all those who are here that post for LTRs and other "traditional" categories haven't been involved in the business at some time? Where I live (a major city), about 1 in 1000 people has been at some point in their lives. Do you know which 0.1% of your local population has been - and are they here? I can't guarentee that I can identify all of the 0.1% in my area, but at least in knowing who some of them are, I have some ability to steer away from them when I find them on here (after I report them). You can't avoid them if you don't know who they are.

RE: 7 - My dictionary only lists 4 definitions for "Intimate". I listed 3 of them. The fourth one was one word: "Personal."
-----
What I suggest the admin do:
1) Change the "IE" category name to "sex". No ambiguous idiom - direct clarity.
2) Instead of an absolute ban, (for a while) compute a percentage, and if someone's contacts contain more than 5-10% (I'll let the admin pick the exact number), then apply the filter. People who are "looking for it" will still easily violate the ratio, while those who aren't can be forgiven for an occasional mistake (after enough time - and contacts with those not seeking).

Report profile feature - broken today (2009/02/12)?
Posted:

I clicked on the link to report someone, but today, all I get is a blank screen.
Using my browser, displaying the source for the page does render a source - filled with javascript that appears complete (has tags html through /html). I have not changed any of my browser settings for over a month. I do have javascript enabled for PoF.
If the actual scripting language contents were changed in the past day or two, then I suggest that the change has broken the feature as it's unusable. Note also: The session/pval variables appear to be included twice into the output. Nothing in the body section renders, including the actual input form, its radio buttons, or the free-form text box for comments about the report (or the pictures of potential spamming profiles along the bottom). I conclude a scripting language problem is the cause.

Get the "t-girls" out of the female category. They simply aren't female.

I hate this one too. I had a couple of good conversations with some that had the designation - and that was BEFORE the restriction was added to the system (or at least, before it was publicized 2 years ago), and I got dinged by it too.
I remember one "cutie" who was probably on here looking for drugs - but the discussion we had (about 15 messages long) was about that she thought I looked like "Mr. Bean." Before her message, I had never heard of that BBC show (1 season), and this was before the movie came out. It really pissed me off that the restriction was imposed retroactively when first instituted.
I've participated in having several prostitutes kicked off of here. I'm still involved in 2 federal cases (one came from PoF) that remain open regarding hookers on dating sites.
What I don't understand is how is one supposed to have an LTR without eventually ending up in bed with the person? A multi-year relationship between healthy adults eventually includes sex; certainly after marriage it had better as such is expected. So why not ban anyone looking for an LTR too? After all, they end up in the same place - just not on the first date. However, LTR's aren't banned by the filter.
I have also found that some women thought "Intimate encounter" meant a first date in a dark restaurant where the couple can actually hear each other and are sufficiently sequestered away from the other patrons. In other words, intimate does not equate to sex (or other bedroom activities). Dictionary: Intimate: Marked by close acquaintance or familiarity. Characterized by informality and privacy - very personal. (NO sexual connotation).
If this site were a pay site, I would have kissed it goodbye long ago over this mess. The admin really knows how to say F U to his users the way he implemented this without warning nor CLARITY. Now, if the system had a category "sex" or "one-night stand" (as opposed to friends, dating, LTR, etc.) instead of the AMBIGUOUS "IE", that would have been different.

While viewing profile: Indicator that one has already contacted them.
Posted:

It would be nice if there were some sort of indicator when viewing a specific profile that tells the viewer that the person has already contacted or been contacted by one's self. My suggestion doesn't care who initiated contact.
Notes:
1) I exclude showing this on search results because that would be too database intensive. However, fetching 1-on-1 matches from contacts (2 precise searches) isn't that intensive.
2) I suggest it because my contacts list has 250+ people on it (after deletions for closed accounts). I can't always remember everyone I've talked to in the past 3+ years I've been here. Also, because of the mailbox/spam-filter bugs and such, I may think I've contacted someone that I actually haven't because the message was eaten by the system.
I don't care if the indicator is additional text or a change in background color. I leave that choice to the admin.

I agree. Not to say it can't work, but I just found a new 95%+ match in there who is less than half my age. I think it's ridiculous that a teenager (19) gets matched to a mid-40's (43) with such a high percentage.
Please add an optional age-filter, an age adjustment, or something. Also, please allow us to sort the results by percentage/score. If not that, please consider the other person's mail filters for age, etc. It's bad when one gets a match that they can't send a message to.

The California RE market
Posted:

I don't believe that we've hit bottom yet. We have one more cycle to go through before we do.
Unemployment in California is in the 9+% range - 2 points above the national average. This means we have more people losing the ability to pay and thus more forclosures than any other region of the U.S. Combine that with California's cuts to services (which if done correctly, should exclude the $10.1B paid to "illegal aliens" per each recent past year for things like food stamps), the decline should yield a net emigration, thus causing the housing supply (both for sale and for rent) to decline even further in value. The state tax increases haven't taken effect yet. When all of these things kick in, we will have one more devaluation.
On July 1, 2009, the sales tax for Los Angeles County will be 10.25%. I don't know what the new top State personal income tax bracket will be, but currently, it's 10.3%* and due to be increased also. However, this time, 10%+ rates will kick in somewhere between $50-100k.
* - Income tax table maximum of 9.3% plus the 1% tax on line 32 of CA form 540.

Do people actually meet on this site???

RE: #125
Not to sound negative but if you ask me most of the dating misfits end up using online dating sites after they fail at real life dating, thats not to say everyone on here is in that category but alot are. Keep tryin or just try irl more and have the balls to ask someone out the worst thats going to happen is "no thanks."
I hate generalizations. Sometimes, it's not a matter of "failure" as much as not having much of a chance to begin with.
I don' t know why the rest of you have ended up here, but in my case, I exhausted the usual outlets for meeting someone long ago. I've gone through all my friends of friends, friends of family, family of friends, etc., and many of my local volunteer organizations. I can't date via work - leads either to professional conflicts of interest or sexual harassment situations. When I was 25, I actually sued a female superior for SH in the workplace - and 3 years later, my [same] employer tried to use that against me. I even vary the times I go to the supermarket and other shopping so I don't always run into the same people - but never find anyone that way either.
So, other than a paid matchmaker, what other alternatives to online dating have been overlooked?

Well, I think that the conversation that went into stocking food and ordinance, and hunting was more to the "survivalist" (including but not limited to complete wacko mountain hermits) line of thinking than it was to financial planning, the latter being which is what I thought the topic was about.

Do people actually meet on this site???

I've only met one person from this site - back in 2006. She tried to extort me 9 months later.
Since then, I've had contact with 4 people - to the point of making arrangements to meet. I spoke on the phone with two of them a day or two beforehand. All 4 times, I showed and she did not. 3 of them were on here (at least one of them still is), and 1 from a pay-dating site (where we both pay). Only one of them had anything to say after the fact about the missed meeting (but it wasn't an excuse). The others never answered.
I'm not certain that anyone here is real anymore.

I have an honest question
Posted:

I don't volunteer my surname but will exchange it on a second date. I want the person I'm seeing to like me for me - not for whom I may be related to. I have a rare surname where everyone who has it is related. It first recorded use as a family name that survives today is from the 1300's, but with evidence that it existed beforehand (at least 1280). Both my parents and several cousins are in "who's who in America," so I'm careful for that reason.

Government bail-out plan
Posted:

What I think really sucks about this whole mess: Those who screwed-up get rewarded with bail-out money, while those who were financially responsible get nothing. Isn't life and society supposed to reward those who do the right thing and punish those who don't?
Given that, I see no reason why any law should be obeyed. Obeying the law screws the citizen. Breaking the law leads to rewards. This position is supposed to be a wrong conclusion, so why is it the apparent conclusion for the situation of the world today?
