Living up to your nic
Posted: 7/8/2006 4:02:58 AM
Yep!

I had originally signed on as Sabresa, but everytime I attended a function, I had to repeat it a number of times 'cause it just didn't make sense.

Barbershopbrat works for me. I use it everywhere else because:

I sing barbershop. I am a 3rd generation barbershop BRAT, and 7th in line to join so it's in my blood (really)

I currentlyl sing in a chorus of @ 100 women as well as a quartet and Jazz quintet!
Barbershop is NOT what it used to be!!!!! Not even close.

Anyway, it's a lot of who I am so I went with that.

I too could use a profile review. I haven't changed the body of it much lately (except for my "im too busy blurb" at the beginning. Which has really helped until I have more free time.

Review away........I have thick skin. (sob) I can take it (wail) really I can!

When you go to sleep at night...
Posted: 6/18/2006 1:56:49 AM
Like many others on here I like to have a little light on. I just can't stand it when it's pitch black...drives me crazy and makes me jumpy. When you can't even see your hand in front of your face? That's a little unnerving. I know my eyes are supposed to be closed......but it's just weird to me. It's like being blind.

I also like to have quiet music on. Something classical with cellos. Or one of those old radio shows (they play them late on Sunday nights)

I am a big reader and often I like to read myself to sleep. Sometimes I dont' even need to open the book....just holding it is enough sometimes. (ok how GEEKY does THAT sound!!)

I can actually sleep anywhere anytime. A tornado could blow through my house and I would sleep right through it. I am a great sleeper, but not such a good waker-upper. I hate getting out of bed. Especially when there's someone warm there to snuggle up against in the morning. That's hard to leave!!

OK. It's 1:58 am and all this sleep talk is making me long for my bed.
Time to turn on the kettle, find my book, turn on the radio, and drift into the quiet slumber.

Nigt all

Hi Angelleys! Welcome to Vancouver!!

I know it says "brings 3 guests" but that is just a standard thing that is posted with each party. They are just trying to encourage everyone to invite thier friends or fellow POFers to each event.

You are MORE than welcome to attend without bringing anyone along!! In fact.....I have attended a few events and each time by myself!!. I actually prefer it. I can be myself not who my friends think I am, AND it forces me to talk to new friends.

You really should go. The folks who have signed up are all wonderful amazing people who will make you feel comfy, and keep you entertained and laughing.

Go.......and have a blast here on POF!!!

Soo would you get married (again)??
Posted: 6/4/2006 1:07:27 AM
Never been married before. Came close once, started all the proceedings, then realized I wasn't in love with him, I was marrying him for convenience, for all the things I always wanted. We weren't the perfect couple and there were many things that I just didn't really like about him. He was a nice guy, but I was NOT stimulated mentally by him, and realized I just wasn't willing to change who I was to be his wife.
I was and am worth so much more than that.

WHEW!!!!! So glad I didn't. He did get married to someone who is perfect for him. I wish him well.

Thought it might happen again a few years back with another long term relationship, but again there were too many things I would have to change about myself to allow him into my life. THANK GOD we never did. We lived together and I found out his true nature.
What a bigotted racist bonehead (kinda reminds me of someone who used to post here)

Marriage can work. There are too many examples I know of where it can. But only when two souls come together as one, yet remain the people, warts and all they were before. Flexibility and compromise are a must. Rigidity will kill things faster than anything.

I would like to be married. But more than anything, I would like to be in a committed long term happy, loving relationship, with or without that paper.

Hey, at this point........a freakin date would be nice

Most embarrassing moment during a date
Posted: 6/2/2006 9:51:00 PM
I have 2. Both from when I was a teenager.

1st. I was on a date with "The Cutest Guy In Langley" I swear!!! Everyone wanted him. He asked ME out. I was just too excited.
It was the 80's, and I wore these cute "ballet" type flat shoes that tied up your legs, with a suede sole, and a nice short skirt. ( I was sooo hot)
He picked me up, and on the way out we stopped at 7-11. It was raining and we got wet running into the store. We were holding hands and he opened the door.
I put one suede soled foot on that tile floor and went up in the air and then down hard on my butt. Skirt up, legs askew. This all happened while we were still holding hands. AND my purse flew out of my hands and it's contents flew all over the store.
I was sooooo embarassed I could have died!! He helped me find all my belongings which was nice except that one of the last things he handed to me was a tampon. He looked embarassed too. We left and went to a movie, didn't talk much, and then I never saw him again. Crap that sucked.

2nd. Another slip and fall.
My friend and her boyfriend had set me up with a good friend of theirs that I had been eyeing for awhile. We went on a double date. Nothing special just hanging out in the park, drinking a few beers (yeah I know...I was underage....bad sabby) Anyway, we decided to head to the arcade and decided to walk and cut through this grassy field.
AGAIN it was raining. What the heck.
Anyway we started to run. The guys were far ahead of us. I slipped and fell VERY hard on my butt. AND...........I PEED my pants. A LOT!! Damn beer. Serves me right!!
Anyway, of course I was wearing jeans and you just couldn't miss that.
The guys didn't even notice I had fell as they kept on running. I told my friend I had to go and took off back to the park, tied my coat around my waist and called my mom to pick me up.
I did see the guy a few times after that. But he wasn't interested. I don't know if my friend ever told him the real reason why I took off.

How bloody embarrasing!!

Who has always been there for you?
Posted: 5/20/2006 7:04:47 PM
I'd have to say...my good friend Joey.
She has been my "soulmate" since I met her 20 years ago. We bonded immediately even though she was almost 20 years my senior.
She has been my mentor, my rock, my shoulder, my healer, my coach, and my dearest friend since then. The kind of person I can call (and have 1nce) at 2:00 in the am when I need someone to help me get through a tough time. Luckily I haven't had to do that very often!!!
If she can't be there in person she is there in spirit, and for as long as you need to figure things out. She doesn't give suggestions, she doesn't say what you want her to say, she just tells you how smart you are for being who you are, and listens, then when you have talked things out and figured them out, she says how amazing you are for figuring it all out. You come out refreshed and strong and back to loving the person you are.
The funniest thing..........now I find myself being the same person to others, and I remember all she taught me about strength and love and listening and being right in the moment for the OTHER person.
AND I do a very good impression of her when she is "actively" listening. Cracks her up everytime.
Love the woman to peices.
I think I need to call her and tell her that right now!!

Coming over to Vancouver
Posted: 5/2/2006 10:49:53 PM
Thanks for "sticking up" for me my friendly POF'ers........what you don't know is that there were 2 posts BEFORE mine that said very much what the MOD was talking about. They were deleted very quickly.

Even my attempt to clarify not to even go to Pidgeon park etc was edited from my own post.

Bugs me that my stuff was edited because I was trying to be the best Vancouverite possible, but I can understand where they are coming from.

It's Alllllll good my little fishies.

Coming over to Vancouver
Posted: 5/1/2006 11:49:11 PM

Stanley Park and the sea-wall is a must!
Grouse Mountain is but a short drive/ride away....then gondola ride up the mountain...lots to see up there....great trails to walk or ride.
Granville Street at night has some pretty crazy nightlife - Try the Yale for some cheap beer...interesting characters.....and a great bluesy house band.
Check out English Bay - go for a walk, get a hot dog, sit on a log and fall in love with the water. Go for a walk down Denman and get a gelatto.
The north shore -(North Vancouver) has some GREAT trails to walk/hike/ride. LOTS of mountains to explore. Try the Capilaino Suspension Bridge if you head there. The bridge is cool, and the forests you walk through are equally amazing.
Shop like crazy on Robson street. Well known high end and "label" stores here. Lots of choice if your credit card can handle it.
Have a walk through Gastown. It's the oldest part of Vancouver, and named after Gassy Jack a local character back in the "old days" Great pubs in that part of town as well as antiques and local artists/and funky shops.
Yaletown is a newer area built up from mostly old warehouses and shops. Interesting architecture with a "new york" feel. Lots of boutiques and shops geared to the "yuppie" crowd. Fun nightlife.
We have a very large Chinatown as we have a large Asian community. Always fun to shop there for bargains and try something new.
Commercial Drive and Upper Main street cater to a more "bohemian" cultural community. Find some great local organic goods on Commercial Drive, or try a poetry reading in a dark coffee shop on Upper Main street.
We have GREAT restaraunts!!! Literally anything you want you can get with so many cultures here.
The Art Gallery always has something cool going on...or head to the Aquarium in Stanley Park.
Want a quick history lesson....jump on a trolley or double decker bus and get the "tour" or go on over to Storeyum where you will get immersed in the history through story, costume and live movement.
If you want to head to Whistler.....you can drive up the Sea-to-Sky...a breathtaking drive (just please obey the speed signs!!! especially as you rubberneck to check out the scenery) or you can hop the Whistler Express train for a 3 hour tour. Then a 2 hour stop in Whistler before you board again to come on back. If you haven't been to Whistler, you should go at least once. Plenty to do both winter and summer.
Head to South Vancouver for some great East Asian (Punjabi,Sikh etc) food!! Large community there.
If you are heading here in the summer, try the Jazz Festival, Festival of Lights Fireworks, Gay Pride Parade, and MANY other fesivals happening. LOTS to do.

OK.....I just realized I have been typing forever.......
I have missed a lot I know.......but I am sounding like a tour guide again.I keep doing this.
I just LOVE my city. What can I say.

Have fun when you are here.
Email me privately if you want more info on anything specific.

I get really pissed off at rude/bigoted/racist/self righteous people. Makes me crazy.
I don't have much of a temper at all....but it just comes boiling up when people are that way.

It's like......who the heck was that???? What happened to the loving peaceful Sabby??? Why the heck is my neck throbbing?? Why are my hands clenched???? Why is there steam coming out of my ears!!!!!???????
Then I'm back hugging a tree, or a cat, and letting everyone be the butterfly they want to be and all that crap.

Other than that.....I'm freakin perfect!!

City or small town?
Posted: 5/1/2006 10:53:51 PM
I prefer the City. I would live right downtown on the water somewhere if I could afford it.

I grew up in South Langley when Langley was considered a "small town" One main street, Willowbrook Mall had a Safeway at one end and Kmart at the other and about 30 stores in between. Only thing to do was go to the arcade, or the 1 lowly movie theatre. BORING.
Spent my teen years escaping to the crazyness of downtown Vancouver. Hanging out on Granville Street with my other funky friends dressed all in black, listening to The Cure. FUN!!
No skytrain back then....had to sleep on the courthouse steps till the buses started running again in the morning. Loved every minute of it.

Still do.

I live in East Van now.
And I CHOSE it.
Sure.....right around the corner from me you will find crack dealers and hookers. You don't bother them, they don't bother you. They eventually get to know that you are not a threat, nor will they try to sell you something.
But my street........my neighborhood....we have a community. I know my neighbors....by name. We say Hi on the street, I know what kid belongs to who, and recognize the cars that drive by. The corner stores around here are great. I make it my job to get to know the owners, know them by face. Some by name. When I come in, they say Hi how are you, how's the singing going etc. We have community here. We all look different, speak different languages, eat different food...and I like it that way. It makes me feel alive.

You can make it that way no matter where you are if you care enough not to be afraid.

AND I can still catch a cab and be right downtown on Granville in 10 min to re-live my youth!!

I did.

Be happy with a change or 2.

expo 86 memories
Posted: 5/1/2006 10:14:55 PM
I agree with Mikel............WAY to much drinking that year. I was 19 that year, so Expo was all about the partying. Especially the Irish Rover's Pub! Whoo----hoo.

I still have my passport. And the invitiation to attend the reception with the Royals. I didn't end up going. Darn youth!! but hey.......it would have interrupted my drinking!!

Concerts, weather, pavillions, and performances I did with my chorus. What a great time!
Thanks for posting this...makes a lot of good memories come flooding back.

Hot for teacher...
Posted: 4/23/2006 9:32:50 AM
My grade 9 English teacher. WOW!!! Mr. McBeath

The guy had longish dark wavy hair, handsome handsome handsome, and a body that always made me think of Magnum PI (c'mon I was in love with Magnum PI) , especially the legs.

He was also a boys gym teacher.

So of course our favorite time would be when he would teach gym right before our English class.
Those shorts!!! That sweaty dark hair, and what a face!!!
Then he would put his legs up on the desk and lean back to relax when we had our assignments and well......I swear we could almost see........well almost!!!
It was hard to concentrate on our assignments sometimes. Whew!

Hmmmm English was always my favorite class.
Hmmmm only class I recieved consitent A's
Hmmmm only class I didn't skip out on!!

When I grow up..........
Posted: 4/16/2006 1:30:50 PM
I always wanted to be

a teacher
a Broadway Star
a decorator
a police officer

Interestingly enough:

I have been:

A preschool teacher
Music educator / coach
Singer / Stage Performer
Caterer
Special Events Decorator
Office Administrator
and now I work for an Insurance Brokrage Firm

I didn't ever get into the policing end of things although I came very close once!
BUT!!!!
My sister-in-law works for the police in forensics and she is keeping her eye open for me as there are openings in her department right now!
I would LOVE to work in forensics.

I have been lucky. I have dabbled and continue to dabble in all of the dreams I had as a kid. I have acheived almost every one of them in some way.

Artistic People?
Posted: 4/16/2006 1:17:48 PM
I have sung with the womens barbershop society (called Sweet Adelines - I know...sounds old fashioned - but that's just the name!) It's not what it used to be! long gone are any thoughts of striped vests and bowler hats - YIKES!

I've done it for 20 years now, and it's my passion.
It has been widely recognized as one of the hardest forms of singing. It sounds easy, but to create the overtone series that is it's signature "lock and ring" when 100 or more women are singing in their own individual way is hard to do. It takes committment and creativity and work.
Then add in choreography, staging etc etc etc and do it all together, while singing, breathing and moving in complete synchronicity and yes it's all memorized (no sheet music) all correctly all at the same time is truly an art.

I also teach the craft to smaller barbershop chorus around BC and coach both men's and women's quartets.

AND I sing in a jazz quintet. I love it as it requires a different set of singing skills so I am always learning.

Hey.....I work in insurance.....if I didn't have a creative outlet I would go bananas

Flirting 101
Posted: 4/16/2006 3:26:08 AM
Interesting topic (and yes to all of you who were wondering...I didn't fall off the face of the earth.) I say interesting because I just got home and am kind of a little tipsy!!! I was just at a party upstairs and then went out to a peeler bar with a couple of guys from the party that I knew and one that I didn't...but was very cute and I liked! I spent the early part of the night being in the same area as him at the house party but never actually being overtly and obviously over the top interested in him. Just little smile right at his eyes every once in a while and a genuine laugh at something he said while again looking right at his eyes.
IT'S ALL IN THE EYES!!!!
Afterwards a couple of the guys (who I know very well) decided to go to a local peeler bar. I went with them just so I could flirt a little more. "CAUSE YA JUST NEVER KNOW!!!!!
He bought me drinks, paid for a massage and my cab ride. NEVER has this happened before, and I DID NOT expect it AT ALL. Completely out of the blue. I had money, but he kept telling me to put it away. I was appreciative and honored since I am used to paying my own way.
Anyway, during the course of the evening I kept making DIRECT eye contact and smiling. NOT in a shy way. Even though I have a shy side to my personality, which can sometime seem "stand-off-ish". But I liked this guy. So I was direct and did not mince words or looks. It was AT him when needed. Then purposeley NOT AT HIM when I was listening to my other friend talk about his law practice. But I noticed him looking at me, listening to his friend. THAT WAS flirting. I was mirroring the guy I liked while listening to our mutual friend talk.
He offered a massage from one of the girls. I whipped off my sweater ( tank top underneath) and went for it.
THAT was flirting, in a non-sexual way. Just me having fun. Open, warm, ready for new things. THAT was flirting.
The thank you's I gave him directly across the table even though he could not hear me were flirting. The touches I gave him on his shoulder, back etc were all flirting.
The big full body press including the hand at the back of the head hug - but in a non-sexual way- THAT was flirting to a tee.

So to narrow it down.......
Be sure to -
smile in a sexy- yet- non sexual way
look DIRECTLY at him - IN HIS EYES when he is talking to you, but most interestingly....WHEN HE IS NOT TALKING TO YOU, AND HE KNOWS YOU ARE LOOKING AT HIM. Don't do this long........do this when he is talking to someone else. Then catch his eye on the way back, do the sexy-non-sexual smile and go from there.
BE GENUINE all the way through.
Perfect your hugging skills. Hugging is also an art. A fully encompassing press against anothers body (not a hard press!! - do it artfully) with the right hand placement in a tender way can be a prelude to a sexual moment WITHOUT being overtly and overthetop sexual.
Afterall - it's just flirting...............you don't want to give it all away.

FAKE will get you no-where. The overtly sexual, "look, look, look at my boobs!!!! "tee-heee-hee I am soooooo like drunk - like "oh my god you are sooo cute" will not work on intelligent men.

It's truly an art. It's a feel, it's your own style, your own brushstrokes, your own canvas. But you have to be real and ready to put yourself out there and risk the rejection. But the possiblity is there, why not try it. See where it goes!!!

Even a man or woman who is fully taken, fully engaged, fully committed to his love will appreciate and recognize when he has been flirted with well and good.
It leaves a smile on the face and the fact that someone out there finds them attractive and worthy of being a sexual being. JUST DON'T CROSS THAT LINE drawn in the sand by vows!!

Ahh flirting........an art......classes starting Tuesday @ 7 - $5.00 an hour!!!

KIDDING!!!!!!!! I don't have time.

What bugs me the most about reading these threads is the statements about overweight people being unattractive. Since when did the 2 start coinciding?

I am a big girl, I fully admit it. I have been both slim and what I am now, but I have always been extremely attractive. (did that sound conceited or what!! those of you who know me know I didn't mean it that way......sort of)

I just don't understand how the OP and many others think the 2 of them go hand in hand?
There are many folks on here who are skinny and not so attractive (by media/social standards not mine) and MANY people who are not the crazy "ideal" that some of you have who are very beautiful. They just happen to have a little or a lot of extra weight.
You can be both!
How beautiful is that! There is much beauty in life if you really choose to see it. Look deeper than the ugly veil you sheild youself in and you may witness it. You just may see unexpected beauty in yourself.

I really wish these threads would just go away. Love who you want. If you don't want to don't and go away, and let the utopian accepting society that we all wish for grow.

Peace my fishies!

Wow!! So many responses to my post, and I forgot I even posted. DUH. Busy life lately.

Foxphyre - I am in East Vancouver, but could drive to anywhere in Van, Bby, Coq, NWest. Don't want to take it much farther as I don't really know what's going on in there.
It feels like an engine problem. It revving high all the time, and it lurches a lot, especially when I am idling. It feels like it's going to die often when I am stopped but it never has. YET.
The other day I noticed that at about 60km when it switches into another gear (it's an automatic) is when it really starts acting up so I haven't driven much faster than that for a couple of weeks. Maybe it's a transmission problem. Who knows. It could be the timing belt. Yikes. I just don't know. I am hoping it's something that can be fixed without major work. I have a feeling it's something much more than that though.

Milfseeker - I am currently out of beer. Scotch???? Perhaps...????

Broken Wings - Thanks for the heads up about your friend in New West. I will email you privately about this. You Rock!!

SBB - You still look good. No matter what your hair color is!!!

Thanks all,

Horselady, I know how ya feel!
At my age I have accepted the fact that I will most likely never have kids (of my own at least) And I agree, you kinda feel left out as it seems like everyone on here has them.

I am as curious as you...thanks for posting this thread.

Fav T.V show of all time

Tim Conway cracking everyone up. Everyone trying not to laugh on a live TV show. Priceless. Even today.

Whodeletedme - I had forgotten about Donny & Marie. LOVED that show too. I had such a cruch on Donny as a kid. Used to have this record with him in a feild of yellow dasies. His eyes would follow you. I used to think it was because he secretly loved me and one day e would be married.

G'night Mary Ellen.

Who can forget The Carol Burnett Show. I am laughing just thinking about it. Harvey Korman doing his "mama", Tim Conway as the old man or Mr. Hu-wiggins, and Carol doing just about anything. God that woman and her show makes me laugh.

I also had a secret love for The Waltons. I KNOW!! But I did.
Gilligans Island
Love Boat
Fantasy Island
Fawlty Towers ( Watery Fowls, Flowery Tw*ts etc.) And I agree, the Germans was a great episode.
Mash

These days I hardly get much time to watch TV, but I do like:
The Amazing Race, Medium, Ellen, Law & Order, Las Vegas and almost anything on Discovery, Bravo, Showcase, Life Network etc. My really stupid weakness/ guilty pleasure..........America's Next Top Model......no really I AM an intelligent woman....really!!!!!! Just wanted to be a model when I was younger.

The closest I have come is some guy last night who emailed me with this linguistic gem..."Massage?".

Umm....nope. Wished him well, and blocked.

Oh. Well. They must be afraid of my beauty....yeah...that's it.

And you had to only do things to benefit others who are not related to you in any way, with no gain to you...what would you do with it. Remember, no gain to you. Financially or otherwise.

Just a beautiful thought on a beautiful day.

MARC HARE AT THE RIVER ROCK RICHMOND April 15th
Posted: 3/11/2006 4:31:11 PM
Nic pic Mac and nut ...gotta love a man in a kilt...Whoooo-hoooo

Having never heard March Hare before, please fill me in on what kind of music they play.
I am under the assumption that they are country. (Not really sure if I am up to a whole night of country music) (not that there's anything wrong with that )

Perhaps I can schedule my busy life and be able to come to this one.

Shenanigans - exactly what I was thinking!

Big Papa is great at organizing these things, so let him run with what's planned already, and we will create something equally FAB the next time. (or better )

I'm gonna check the party page though to see what's coming up. I am missing a few events so I didn't pay attention to what dates they are on.

Then we can begin. Well not today perhaps....
But soon.

Cool.

Thanks Nut!

It would be great to have more events here, and I am willing to put some work into making it happen.
Location is always the hardest thing, but I will put my thinking cap on and get to it.

March is out of the pic I think as Next weekend is too soon. (not enough time for me) and Fresgos on Sun. Then the following weekend is the Amazing Race and drinks afterwards.

It'll happen though!

Have a blast tonight. Sorry but I can't make it.

Why I'm all done with POF
Posted: 3/11/2006 3:17:45 PM
It's all in how you take it!!
I live by the "there are more fishies in the sea" attitude. You HAVE to on here.

I have gone on quite a few dates off here, had great conversation, met many folks. Some good, some not so good.

Like you I have made "chat" dates as well, and they never happened. Email dates that have never materialized. I have been in contact by phone with 2 guys and we were supposed to have a date later that week, but I never heard from them again. We had never met. Phone calls were great, lots of laughter etc, they read my profile, saw my pics, "got" who I was..the whole nine yards. So why then did it all change??? I don't know! But I dont' care. I am to fabulous to waste on folks who are scared to meet, who are scared to be vulnerable etc.

There are more fish in the pond here.
I know MANY great men. Unfortunately they are all taken. But I know there are more like them out there.

If you stay positive and only put positive energy out there, you WILL catch your fishie one day.

So instead of letting those men change who I was before I met them, change what I think about men in general becuase of thier actions, I re-cast my line, and hope for the best.

Wishing you all the best!
Sabby
