Does Money Equal Happiness?
Posted: 8/8/2008 9:04:33 AM
Sure 250 K might buy me a decent home....but that's it...I still have to work, pay bills, save for college funds...blah blah...what is the point of winning the lottery if you can't then do whatever you want. I'd need enough for a decent home, pay the bills forever, trips all over the place and be a student for life :) Sure I'd love to win 250 K, but if we're talking jackpots here..I think those should be at least a couple million.

Money is a good thing...so is chocolate :)

Too much or too less is bad...just enough is perfect.

I myself wouldn't turn down millions, but it would bring about it's own set of problems.
Having enough money to never really have to stress about money..that's enough to make me happy.

Government does make money off smokers yes, but also pays out money in healthcare for smokers...would be interesting to see how the numbers compare though I doubt you could do a complete analysis as you would have to determine that the healthcare costs were directly related to smoking.

Regardless, we should be thankful we have a healthcare system that provides us so much at no cost. Granted, the system is not perfect, but much better than many other countries.

it's easy to say as one person, money should be spent on this and that instead of this or that but we're talking about decisions made for an entire country...that changes the perspective at times

Anyway...we are Canadians...we will forever complain about our government...and that is probably good...keeps politicians on their toes....the government should be afraid of the people....not the other way around

I just think quit smoking aids should be covered by insurance

Now I know every insurance plan is different but every plan I have had has covered at least $500 towards anti-smoking aids, pills, whatever...

Actually, most Health Authorities in the province do have stop smoking programs through Addiction services. There are group meetings in some cases, but they also give you free stop smoking aids. The patch and gum for sure, but I have also hear Zyban and Champix though I'm not sure on that. I had them come into my workplace to provide services for employees and many other workplaces are doing that. But, they are also available.

Here's some info:

Playoffs (NHL)
Posted: 5/5/2008 7:39:58 AM

Doesn't matter if the leafs went gone golfing sooner, everyone else does too
and in the end doesnt matter in the least that the Habs made the playoffs since they didnt go all the way

SO making the playoffs means nothing? That only the team who wins the cup is good? I think there are far too many other factors in play here. I don't think a single Habs fan really expected the habs to go all the way. Personally I was hoping for the Conference final with the Habs and Pens and was assuming the Pens would probably take it.

I think not only making the playoffs but also finishing first in the East does stand for something. Like it or not the Habs are a talented team (but yes there are other teams more talented)...and also a still quite young team. I'm disappointed we didn't go farther but I'm excited for the next few years which are looking promising for our Habs!

Habs have won 3 in a row before...they might do it again, who knows but I sure am enjoying playoffs. Man though, the Habs just seem like they don't want it as bad as Philly...that is until they are down 2 goals then suddenly they want it.

Kudos to Halak for stepping up to the plate and handling the pressure fairly well thougH!

Price isn't playing his best that is true, but we can't put it all on him. 2 of those goals last night he had no chance because he couldn't see. I love the Habs of course but his team isn't helping him out a whole lot. It was kinda funny how as soon as Halak comes in the team defends their zone, but when Price is there it's like they figure they don't have to or something.

Unfortunately No, being called a slut is not enough to prevent girls from doing this sort of thing. Even when I was in school that word was not thrown around as being all that derogatory and even the girls who were "sluts" didn't suffer major social persecution for it. I'm thinking this sort of thing is the next level of 7 minutes in heaven or spin the bottle. Sadly it's a lot more dangerous than those games. As parents all you can really do is make sure your children are aware of the dangers, make sure you know where they are going, who with...they might lie yes, but always ask..if nothing else it shows you care, which in turn gives them self esteem and self worth.

Quitting smoking... any advice?
Posted: 9/11/2007 12:35:11 PM
Just wanna update that the Champix is working well. After about a week of taking the pills I was easily down to 5 cigarettes a day...and not even enjoying them...basically just out of habit...so the drug has done it's part now I am just battling the habit part of it...having a smoke while driving, with coffee that sort of thing. i start a new job on Monday though and promised myself I would start as a non smoker...and that should keep me busy..plus moved into a non-smoking building. Only side effect I have had from the pills is some nausea...but seems to be lessened if I take the pills with food or milk...good luck to anyone else quitting!

Pit Bulls
Posted: 8/21/2007 7:44:15 AM
More legislation and enforcement is needed when it comes to "breeding" in general. A responsible breeder cares about the breed and it's reputation. They care about the homes these pups go to, not about the money. Controlling who is breeding these dogs might help the problem, because while the breed may be more aggressive by nature, I really don't feel that this is how they were meant to be. I've actually never met an aggressive pitbull myself...just loveable goofy ones. Many dogs are aggressive, regardless of breed, almost all have some type of territorial aggression, I guess pitbulls get a bad rap in part because they can do more damage then some dogs? Not too sure

The thing that I need to complain about most with Tim's...is that it is not consistent from place to place or time to time...a double double does not always taste like the last double double you had. In more of the "upper class" coffee shops there is far more consistency within the products and franchaise.

What policies are these? And how in the world do they somehow give females an advantage in moving on to higher education? I will state too though that when it comes to graduate and doctoral education males are still more representative. Just wanted to state that to put the whole picture out there rather than a small piece

I think this gender imbalance applies to younger people just as much as older people. Look at our university populations. With so many universities in the Halifax area and in NS we do have this huge population of young people. However, when you look at stats for undergraduate students...in most every university 60% or more are female. Not only are there more women in Nova Scotia but apparently they are more educated than our male population. Being that educational and intellectual compatibility is a huge factor for many people while dating does this put women at even more of a disadvantage?

I agree that being "drunk" is not fun...I don't like being drunk to the point I can't remember and completely lose control. i do however enjoy having a few drinks and a buzz that does help to take the edge off. Makes me a little more outgoing. Maybe that is a problem..that i can't do that without alcohol but to each his own. All depends on the person weather drinking or not drinking can be a turn off

Hate to say it...but it could just be an excuse..a scapegoat so to speak. If you REALLY like someone the fact they don't drink is not a dealbreaker...could be a variety of other reasons they aren't that into you, aside from the non-drinking bit.

I dunno..I just find the death penalty very disturbing..I remember when timothy mcveigh was executed...I just felt sick watching it...same with watching that internet video of saddam being hanged...and those are both horrible people but something about it seems wrong and sick to me..but I also hold some values and beliefs that are different than some so I can certainly see the other side of the argument as well

Yeah...I'm just saying..people are making it sound like it's not fair they get taken care of while the rest of us have to work...and yeah maybe it's not fair they get treated that well...but no one would trade their place. WHen you look at Maslow's Hierachy of Needs...prisoners receive only the basic, while the rest of us can obtain all those needs. FOr reference you can go here..

http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.businessballs.com/images/maslow%27s_hierarchy_businessballs.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.businessballs.com/maslow.htm&h=711&w=978&sz=196&tbnid=ExulmisO0h9MkM:&tbnh=108&tbnw=149&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhierarchy%2Bof%2Bneeds%26um%3D1&start=2&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=2

I'm not saying they should be treated as well as they are, but don't compare your own hardships to that...they are missing out on life.

I see your points but I do have a different take on the subject...Personally I don't believe in the death penalty..but yes there are better ways for criminals to pay the price than jail time. Also, depends on the crime.
Murder - I don't think it is our place as humans to decide who lives and who dies. The person who committed the murder may have done it for reasons that in their mind are justifiable...who is to say putting them to death is any more justifiable? I think our ethnocentric views of society could cloud the judgements being made on the death penalty.

I also do believe in rehabilitation...criminals can become functioning members of society..but it's a topic that needs to be researched more and programs developed.

Now, pedophilia is another case..research has shown a very very low rate of rehabilitation, and a high risk of reoffending. This is not acceptable...the jail time these people serve is inadequate...and most of them should probably be castrated. Not to mention...that there are so many out there who have never been charged...same with rapists.

So no, I don't think we should have the death penalty, but yes I do think our judicial system needs changes

Halifax has a problem,violence.
Posted: 6/17/2007 1:52:55 PM
I saw a bit of this last night myself...a really terrible brawl outside of cheers that got out of hand to the point where I was a little afraid to just be there. I believe 6 or 7 people were arrested..about 6 or 7 bouncers involved, then cops..then..this story in the news..http://www.hfxnews.ca/index.cfm?sid=28862&sc=89
No idea if this was another fight..but it sure as heck wasn't the one i witnessed.

Anyway...admittedly there was some questionable force used by security...but on the other hand..perhaps that is justifiable as you never know what these people will do next or how dangerous they might be...any thoughts on that?

friendship vs boyfriend..
Posted: 6/16/2007 2:35:34 PM
It sound slike she has tried to get her friend to stand up for herself..you can't make people change..and you can't help people who don't want to be helped..not to mention we don't know the other side of the story. If two friends have such a different outlook on what is healthy and what they want in life...the friendship probably isn't going to be lifelong anyway...friendship is not the same as taking a marriage vow...yet turning your back on a marriage seems more acceptable than turning your back on a friend. If being friends with someone is draining you and affecting YOU in a negative way..yes give it a chance to get better but if it doesn't...get out...friendships are about more than one person putting up with the other's shit all the time and always trying to help...friendships should be about mutual respect and caring...not a counsellor/patient relationship

Posted: 6/16/2007 10:06:42 AM
That's all easier said than done...she says everytime she tries to do something with her friend her friend would rather spend time with her man. Kinda makes it hard to have that one on one time without the guy around. Not all friendships are for life...people grow apart. If you're not getting anything out of this friendship...I say leave her to make her own mistakes...that may sound cold..but I've been on both sides of a situation like this...and in these situations the people involved need to figure it out on their own, makes for a better learning experience...you can't treat your friends like that..or you will end up with none...hard lesson to learn..but you won't make that mistake again once you've been through a rough time with no friends to help you

CIBC Overtime Lawsuit
Posted: 6/6/2007 7:18:30 PM

My question is..do not the supervisors know what time the employees are to leave work and should they not tell them to leave that their overtime isn't approved? Isn't it their job to make sure no one works unapproved overtime and to let the staff know what hours they are too work that week or day.

In a perfect world..yes...but supervisor's and manager's time are maxed out as well. Maybe in some workplaces employees really are supervised..but I know I am lucky if I get a chance to check in with my manager for a minute during the day.

People can't be babysat...but yes I do think it is wrong if people are straight out asked or told to work overtime and not getting paid for it....feeling the pressure to do so and chosing to on your own accor dis another story

This is becoming a huge issue in all workplaces though...as 4 different generations are working together, each with their own sets of standards...employers need to clearly set out standards or we have a case of inequality of workload amongst employees

PS. Leafs..I'm confidential exclusion too and our overtime time in lieu is at 1.5..why is yours straight time? Our IT folks are unionized too...interesting..

For those who work OT and dont get paid then the big question is Why are you doing it?

Ummm because I care about doing a good job and getting things done. Sometimes it's for my own sanity. I will take paperwork home to do at night because I often don't get a chance to do it in the office. It prevents total chaos..and that is my choice to do it.

I'm sorry, but working an extra half hour to an hour some days to get stuff wrapped up isn't overtime..it's part of the job. The problem is many employers don't appreciate their employees in other ways....so employees feel the need to squeeze the employer for every cent they can. If you feel like a part of a team and feel like you have a positive role in your company, it provides enough satisfaction and pride that little things like a little extra work isn't going to be a big deal

Depends on the situation. Has her manager approved the overtime? I work overtime on a regular basis but only claim it if there is some big project and my manager needs me to stay late to finish and approves it. An hour extra here and there tagged on the end of a day I don't bother with

Call Centers
Posted: 6/4/2007 5:48:51 PM
Only call centre I worked at was Manulife when I first finished school. It was decent...mon-fri, hours were between 9am and 9pm, 3 weeks vacation to start, great benefits...I loved the people. I got bored after awhile though, but that tends to happen to me in most jobs. I was actually kinda sad to leave there but I moved on to a career which was in the field I had studied for. If you are looking to the call centre type job, I'd definetely recommend the place. There is a bit more to learn than most call centres I think but I think it's probably one of the best to work at as you're not selling anything, just providing service.
