keeping dogs cool during this heat wave
Posted: 7/30/2009 11:20:02 PM
Is it possible that they are smarter than you give them credit for? Maybe they don't drink water while you are a way so they don't have to run the risk of displeasing you by piddling on the floor. My dog does that. As soon as I get home, she goes and takes a big drink, and within half an hour is outside, doing her thing.

Sincere compliments are always appreciated by me. When someone compliments me on my profile, I know they've read it. It's nice to know what things about you caused someone to send a message.

I most likely will respond with something like:

Morbid..but what song is a must to your good-bye
Posted: 6/29/2009 9:32:23 PM
Thanks Balled Eagle, for reviving this thread!

If I'm only allowed one song I pick:

Knocking on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan

I've thought about this a bit, and I really like the idea of an Irish style wake, with refreshments and entertainment for all.
Followed by a big bonfire cremating my remains. I have always thought to myself that, that of all days is mine, and I want people to enjoy themselves.
I'd like them to play at least the following ten songs from my favorites playlist:
Knocking on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
Dead Flowers - The Rolling Stones
Browneyed Girl - Van Morrison
Bye,bye Baby, Goodbye - Janis Joplin
Summertime - Janis Joplin
I'm Going Home - Ten Years After
With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe****r
Angel - Jimi Hendrix
Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
Bad Side of The Moon - April Wine

Whatever else they play, I hope they have the party of my life!

Reading Between the Lines

I am one that likes innuendo, and use it as often as possible. I always look for hidden or subtle wordplays in messages. Some are very skilled at it. A tongue in cheek comment says a lot about the author. (and no, that's not the cheek I meant!)

Chemistry..... on POF
Posted: 6/18/2009 9:10:53 PM

The Chemistry 'test' here is pretty much as accurate as my daily horoscope. I filled it in for fun but it came up as generic as humanly possible. And what a coincidence... it's the same for just about everyone.

We're all confident, family oriented and slightly dodgy on self-control. (Aren't we??)

Next you'll be saying there's no Santa Claus, right?

I agree though, it's another great gadget wasted.

Why complicate the hell out of things? It's like making a fire. He's the steel, she's the flint, bang them together a few times, you'll get a spark. If the spark develops into a flame, you've got fire. So easy, even a caveman can do it!

The ethics of insurance
Posted: 4/3/2009 10:22:44 PM

Insurance is how risk is shared. If you look at your insurance premiums as how you chip in to help out people who need help, then you can see another value to insurance that is outside your personal gamble about whether you'll ever need that help yourself. When you file a claim and get paid, you are paid out of the money that other people put in. They are helping you out. It seems to me that insurance is just a way for people to help one another. Profit is made off it because it takes work and risk to administer an insurance company.

Spoken like a true insurance salesman!

Have you ever broken a cell phone?
Posted: 4/3/2009 10:52:25 AM
I've never broken a cell phone, but I would like to if I could!
Every time I see some idiot driving down the road, yapping away and not paying attention to what is going on around them, I get the urge.
Don't get me wrong, I am not against cell phones, I own one, that I take with me for safety sake when I go fishing, but so many today have become so attached to these devices and seem to not be able to function without them.
So if you are one of those people I am referring to, PLEASE, be responsible in how you use it!

Redundant or not, I believe this is a much better topic for a thread than something like "have you ever broken a cell phone" With that said, I'd like to recount an experience I was a part of when I was fourteen.

As members of the Boy Scouts, a group of us were taken and dropped off on one of the smaller gulf islands, (Mudge if I remember correctly), with a minimal amount of gear for a 3 day survival weekend. For me, what made that weekend so memorable was the way we all worked together for the common good of the group. Each person contributed what knowledge they had, and as a result we actually had a very good time, and also were able to learn much about this beautiful province of ours. I have often wondered what happened to the other fellows that were there, it would be nice to reminisce with them.

All Indian land claims might be Knolled and Void !
Posted: 3/31/2009 11:34:38 AM
I think what he's referring to is this:

Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas

The traditional view of a relatively recent migration has also been challenged by older findings of human remains in South America; some dating to perhaps even 30,000 years old or more. Some recent finds (notably the Luzia Woman in Lagoa Santa, Brazil) are claimed to be morphologically distinct from most Asians and are more similar to Africans, Melanesians and Australian Aborigines. These American Aborigines would have been later displaced or absorbed by the Siberian immigrants. The distinctive Fuegian natives of Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the American continent, are speculated to be partial remnants of those Aboriginal populations. These early immigrants would have either crossed the ocean by boat or traveled north along the Asian coast and entered America through the Northwest, well before the Siberian waves. This theory is presently viewed by many scholars as conjecture, as many areas along the proposed routes now lie underwater, making research difficult. Some scholars believe the earliest forensic evidence for early populations appears to more closely resemble Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders, and not those of Northeast Asia.
(bolding is mine)

To further answer your question, I am not a lawyer, but even if this were to prove true, the Native Americans would still seem to have a claim, by the context of the treaties that have been signed. Just my opinion.

April 1st - Big Computer Virus Wakes?
Posted: 3/31/2009 11:19:32 AM
For those that cannot update their computer's antivirus or windows software, and/or suspect that they are infected, Bit Defender Antivirus has created a special website dedicated to the detection and removal of this virus. This can be found at

http://www.bdtools.net

Failing this, get your computer to your local computer guy and have him deal with it. It is still unknown what the exact payload of this virus is.

Our World
Posted: 3/30/2009 9:03:33 PM
In my opinion, what is being done south of the border, and here in Canada, as well as Europe, is only prolonging the time until the final collapse of the world financial systems as we know them. There is a basic unfairness in the system currently, which the people are now beginning to see. Change is the new buzzword for 2009, and I surely hope the changes are in place before the collapse comes. Sorry for the doom and gloom.

Integrity, sincerity and relationship stability test! A sham?
Posted: 3/25/2009 12:23:41 AM
Okay, I got a good one for ya! Just for giggles I took the test and answered the exact opposite of what was true. This is what I got in response.

Dear friendleebear,
Thanks for requesting the "Serious Member" designation for your profile. Part of that process was completion of a special questionnaire that gauges the consistency between your stated intention as a serious dater and the relationship attitudes and behaviors you seem to hold.
The results of that questionnaire indicate that you come across, at least partly, as inconsistent in what you say and what you might do in a dating relationship. We ask you to think about your agenda or motivation for using online dating and to decide whether a "Serious Member" seal is right for you at this time or whether that type of message on your profile might lead to misunderstandings with daters looking for a relationship that’s definitely serious or committed.

This test can be skewed by lying! I say it's questionable.

Housing is a right, or is it?
Posted: 3/24/2009 2:47:10 PM

so I don't have to get a job if I wanna move out of my parents place? I can resort to a life on the streets and the province will GIVE me housing?? What else can I scoop in this deal?? Why would anyone pay rent if they knew they could just let the province give them stuff??

What really burns my butt is the way some manipulate the system and receive subsidized housing benefits, without really qualifying.

I know this couple that have raised two sons, one that completed high school, got a job, and moved out on his own and is now paying his own way, and seldom asks for any help.
The other son dropped out of school at 16, has since held numerous entry level jobs (while living at home and not paying rent) which he has quit for various reasons. (didn't like the hours, didn't like the pay, didn't like fellow employees)
He then participated in unprotected sex with a young girl, (he was 19, she was 15 at the time) and she became pregnant. Since the child was born, he has quit his latest job, been given subsidized housing, and now collects a welfare cheque while sitting on his butt, because the mother is under age, and would not be eligible for assistance without his presence.
His parents are still constantly giving him money, and bailing him out of financial messes. (I believe because they do not want to see their grandchild suffer.)
Meanwhile, another young woman that I know, who is disabled and has two young children and is divorced from a deadbeat dad, who should have subsidized housing, has to pay full value rent and try to make ends meet on her disability allowance, while waiting for a subsidized vacancy to become available. Where's the fairness in this?

Old Fashioned Chilli Sauce Recipe???
Posted: 3/23/2009 1:25:47 AM
Here's another one from Bernardin home canning book, I haven't tried it myself.

Chili Sauce

Ingredients

12 cups peeled chopped tomatoes
2 cups chopped onions
2 cups chopped green peppers
1 cup chopped red pepper
2 tbs chopped jalapeno peppers
1 1/2 cups vhite vinegar
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
4 in cinnamon stick
1 bay leaf
2 tsp mustard seed
1 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp whole cloves
1/2 tsp whole black peppercorns
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1-2 large garlic cloves finely minced

Directions

Peel, core and chop tomatoes; place in colander. Let stand 15 minutes; discard liquid. Measure 12 cups prepared tomatoes.
Combine tomatoes, onions, green and red peppers, jalapeno peppers, vinegar, sugar and salt in large stainless steel or enamel pot.
Place cinnamon stick, bay leaf, mustard and celery seed, whole cloves and peppercorns in a square of cheesecloth, tie to create spice bag. Add to tomato mixture.
Stir in garlic, ginger and nutmeg.
Bring chili sauce to a boil, stirring frequently. Boil gently stirring occasionally, until volume is reduced by 1/2, about 2 hours.
Fill boiling water canner with water. Place 8 clean 1/2 pint jars in canner over high heat.
Place snap lids in boiling water; boil 5 minutes to soften sealing compound.
Ladle chili sauce into a hot jar to within 1/4 inch of top rim (headspace)
remove air bubbles by sliding rubber spatula between glass and food, recheck headspace.
Wipe jar rim to remove any stickiness, center snap lid on jar, apply screw ring just until finger tight. Repeat for remaining chili sauce and place jars in canner.
cover canner and return to a boil and process for 15 minutes.
Remove jars and cool for 24 hours. Check jar seals. Label sealed jars and store in cool dark place.

Yield 7 to 8 1/2 pint jars (500 ml)

Old Fashioned Chilli Sauce Recipe???
Posted: 3/23/2009 12:46:24 AM
Here you go girls, this recipe was originally in the Ball Blue Book, I have modified it a little as I like mine a little spicier.

Tomato Chili Sauce

Ingredients
4 qt red tomatoes peeled & chopped
2 c onions; chopped
2 c sweet red pepper; chopped
1-2 hot chili peppers; finely chopped or (1/2 to 1 tsp dried crushed)
1 c demerara sugar
3 tb salt
3 tb mixed pickling spices
1 tb celery seed
1 tb red mustard seed
2 1/2 c vinegar

TIP: (To make it easier to peel tomatoes, I freeze them whole first and then dunk in hot water for a few minutes , until the skin slips off when squeezed)

Directions
Combine tomatoes, onions, sweet and hot peppers, sugar and salt in a large sauce pot. Cook gently 45 minutes. Tie spices in a cheesecloth bag; add to tomato mixture; cook until mixture is reduced by 1/2, about 45 minutes. As mixture thickens, stir frequently to prevent sticking. Add vinegar and cook slowly until as thick as desired. Remove spice bag. Pour hot into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Adjust caps. Process 15 minutes in boiling water bath.
Yields 6 pints.
