Is dating at 40 just a bad idea?
Posted: 5/11/2009 9:38:16 PM
Most single people I know are over 30, never married, professionals who are looking for someone. Over the past 15 years there has been ZERO assistance from the married friends on trying to meet others even after making it known I was interested in meeting others.

I do agree that MySpace and Facebook are probably NOT the way to go for meeting people. The bar and religious route don't appeal to me. I seem to be the eldest single person at the classes and meetings. I have some hope for the "play date" concept which are parlor gaming events to meet people. Play checkers, crazy 8's, etc with a broad cross section of people. Meet and great others.

Programmers are pretty buff too since they can go down to the gym and pump lemmas all day long.

As the others pointed out DRM and other things will keep you from making bit backup copies of what you mentioned.

As for your computer graphic's card, you get what you pay for. So if you buy a cheap DVI output, then don't expect the best. HDMI has copy protection built into it at the "good" picture qualities. Google it and learn. If you are running a serious 1080p with 7.1 surround sound, be sure your computer can keep up with it.

Do your homework before buying so you know what you are getting yourself into.

IP ADDRESS QUESTION
Posted: 12/9/2008 5:29:57 PM
Okay, not to start any flame wars but...

1) Most of the time IP addresses are dynamic so where they exactly are can only be traced to a city. ISPs will usually get a block of IP addresses and assign them to their end users for a certain location. I recall seeing (hope) some ISPs shuffling their IP address blocks every few months among their local centers. These will probably get you to a city.

Something like http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm

2) Some companies, notably one that starts with an M and produces a popular OS, has a program called "Location Finder" which will try to figure out where you are based on a Wi-fi connection.

http://www.boingboing.net/2005/12/09/privacy-implications.html

They could datamine information and speculate where you are based on other information.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ?
Posted: 12/9/2008 5:06:58 PM
I have run into that problem a few times. Now 3Coms are starting to be left out of the drivers :(.

Ran into a situation one time reloading an old system and windows update did not support the browser Microsoft included with the original OS any more. Microsoft was still supporting the OS though, just not supporting updating with the original browser.

Using a public computer might be a BAD thing. Depending on how well the public computer owner runs their systems, other people might have key loggers and other nasty items loaded on the systems.

Your friend should invest in a "cheap" laptop. It helps keep their information out of the public's hands.

How many people from North East AL?
Posted: 11/26/2008 7:59:36 PM
Being in the middle of North AL, I have had no problems.

Right now I am chatting with a lovely lady in North West Georgia and have exchanged emails with several women in Tennessee.

My search settings are pretty much open. Feel free to chat with people you don't know. You might find they are interesting. Often looking into the waters will help you catch the big one.

They do. As to what information is returned to the mothership and what they do with it, I have no idea. I would hazard they know your CPU ID, your bios ID, and all your MAC addresses.

Remember, they require your computer to talk to their system for updates.

Most powerful computer?
Posted: 11/16/2008 2:28:52 PM
The faster/most powerful computer is often the one without the most CPUs.

Programming a computer for sequential execution is the easiest. When you try to scale the task to multiple-CPUs, programming usually gets real complicated. Now if you have a non-homogeneous system where computers are NOT the same processors or close relatives, then your problems increase. Answering your question is worthy of a PHD thesis.

Programming the most powerful computer in the world might not be possible for some computational problems. A problem that can be easily computed in parallel is say a brute force attempt to find an encryption key. The problem can be easily partitioned into smaller chunks which could be further partitioned until you can't partition the problem anymore.

If you have very data dependent problems, parallel process might not work at all. This type of problem often has data context constraints. Your program would run but upon reaching a certain point, it then has to redo everything because the one byte of data it just process invalidates everything according to the written program.

Try some general websurfing on Turing problem, NP, Parallel computing, and program partitioning.

Emailing videos
Posted: 11/14/2008 4:42:31 PM
There are a few ways to transfer large files.

1) Chat direct file transfers. Some clients have this ability built in. I know Yahoo messenger does. They might limit the file size.

2) Use a "free" file host website. Not quite the best solution, but the can work. Your mileage may vary. Try to find one that doesn't require you to sign up for their service (and possible junk mail). For more information see:

Hope this helps.

World's Spam Drops by 75-percent
Posted: 11/13/2008 9:20:39 PM
I might be wrong, but I think computers are involved. A whole bunch of computers and a very high speed internet connection.

From The Washington Post:

Joe Stewart, director of malware research for Atlanta based SecureWorks, said that these known criminal botnets: "Mega-D," "Srizbi," "Pushdo,""Rustock" and "Warezov," have their master servers hosted at McColo.

From McColo cached Google page:

Our datacenter is situated in top-level modern MarketPostTower IT center, San Jose, CA, USA.
Total bandwidth throughput exceeds several gigabits.

So they have possibly a 2 to 5 gigabit connection to the Internet.

Try clearing out your cookies. I believe the FAQ has instructions.

Update:
In order to prevent the login page from appearing over and over again you need to activate your cookies. You can do this by clicking on Tools on your browser, then Internet Options, then Enable Cookies or set the security setting to anything but High.

Not quite your exact problem but it does tell you how to lower the security setting for IE.

What browser is your friend using?

Advice on buying a new computer
Posted: 11/8/2008 5:31:33 PM
You have mentioned a few applications. In general individuals using Adobe Photoshop tend to only use NOT before the term "enough memory."

But you are in luck. Today you can get beefy computers at commodity prices. Today, 2 GB of memory is common with 4 being reasonable. If memory serves me correctly, Windows XP only uses upto 3 GB of memory. No flaming just link to the Microsoft page that proves me wrong. Hard drives are CHEAP.

I pretty much will throw my hands up on your video card needs. mind92 is correct in the video card should be PCI-express x16. The graphics cards are getting so powerful that some programs like Adobe Photoshop are trying to use them to speed up those math intensive transformations/masking/alterations/etc.

Here are some simple rules.
1) Start reading up on computers so you know what you want and don't want.
2) Avoid Unified Memory Architectures where they make your video RAM out of your main memory RAM.
3) Get the Sunday paper and read the inserts for their computer sales.
4) Visit shopping websites and see what they find.
www.bensbargains.net
www.spoofee.com
www.fatwallet.com
www.techbargains.com
They might be .com or .net I don't recall. They will often point to specials in your Sunday paper or at websites like Dell.

Need some help fixing a scanner-printer
Posted: 10/31/2008 6:27:46 PM
When you pop open the scanner/printer, looks to see what type of USB-B connector they used. Surface mounts are more complicated than thru hole. You might want to look around to see if you can cannibalize a USB connector from something else.

You can always mail order the part. USB connectors are not proprietary and you will be able to find what you need when you open up the scanner/printer.

They have several types of USB connectors.

Can't use a pair of needle nose pliers to bend the connections back?

Try cutting off the end of a cheap USB cable (doesn't have to be a USB-B, just something that connects to your computer) and solder the wires directly to the scanner. Be sure you know which wire should go where. Stick a few tiewrap points on to prevent cable tension from ripping out the wires.

Surface computing, the first step to 3D computing?
Posted: 10/31/2008 6:08:21 PM
Just a thought here.

Modern 2D screens are on the order of more than 1024x768. How about we call them 1024x1024 for ease. Now for 3D, monochrome we get have to multiply that by our height or depth of say... 1024. Now if you add color, you must multiply that by Bits per location say 32 bits. Now your memory requirements are 1024x1024x1024x32 = 32 Gigabits or 4 Gigabytes of memory. You might be able to reduce the memory requirements by using hidden surface removal algorithms, but crunching that much data in realtime might require a bit more horsepower. If the image is dynamic, then you have to worry about positional translation which means even more horsepower.

Your common CPU architecture might not work. GPUs/tile processing/Systolic arrays might be a better way to handle the number crunching and memory bandwidth issues. These are the same architectures you would use if you are trying to perform 3D input. They are used in RADAR systems right now quite successfully.

Surface computing, the first step to 3D computing?
Posted: 10/30/2008 10:21:11 PM
As people have mentioned, the multitouch 2D that Microsoft is trying to invent has been out for some time. You can make one pretty cheaply. http://www.instructables.com/id/Interactive-Multitouch-Display/

Now there are 3D devices. Again, folks have mentioned about the VR root technology. Dealing with position location in 3D space requires some non-trival tracking technology that is not currently economical for the mass market. Glove laser gyros were real expensive the last time I bothered looking, but they were way more practical than some of the experimental 3D stuff I have heard about.

Please remember, in Hollywood, the director shows reality from their vantage. Physics and practicality are usually casualties. (Where is my flying car from the 1960's Popular Mechanics? Atomic power was suppose to be so cheap that hooking up the electric meters was not going to be worth the effort...)

Does anyone know anything about RFID technology?
Posted: 10/30/2008 10:07:42 PM
Will it be true Wi-Fi or the older standard like a 900 Mhz wireless data link?

Look into the barcode classic manufactures like intermec, symbolics, psion, etc.

RFID readers can be easily added to PDA based 1D and 2D barcode scanners. I have no idea what the cost of a compact flash add-in card is, but maybe $200 to $400 USD.

The Nokia 5140 is suppose to have had RFID ability + java + GSM/EDGE from what I remember, but they might not want to use a cellular network.

RFID detection is not too complicated so I would expect the GOOD wi-fi units would have the RFID as an option. Most of the embedded systems the wi-fi/barcode/RFID will use either Windows CE, Embedded Linix, QNX or VxWorks. It might be wise to spend about 30 minutes to read up on Microsoft Visual Studio paying attention to the embedded targets.
