Here in Cambodia we have a franchise called 'Happy Pizza'. Yep, pizza baked with marijuana. If you order the extra happy pizza, be prepared to lose a day.

Good for you and what you did...it was the right thing to do. But, I think that there are a few of us who would have done something similar, pro-gun or not. Being for gun control doesn't necessarily mean that you are a coward. I cannot sit by and watch when helpless people are being harmed, and one day, it'll probably get me killed. I got into a knife fight in Thailand (three people, two knives...guess who didn't have one?) protecting a woman I didn't even know, and I fought off two gang members in Mexico who were beating an elderly man I didn't know.
I am for gun control.

I have seen homeless people using fast food restaurants as their own personal bathrooms. Maybe the money they charge is to stop this, after all, they have to pay for the water and clean up. An alternative would be to offer tokens to paying customers.

Finding medical care around the world
Posted:
8/5/2009 6:20:38 PM
It can be a scary thing to get sick in a foreign country. I thought that it would be helpful to get recommendations from members of where to go, and possibly where not to go in case of an emergency.
I'll start with where I live, Cambodia. Not that many of you will ever come here, but you never know. I'm not sure if it's proper or against the rules to post phone numbers and exact addresses, so I'll just give general areas of where to find them.
CAMBODIA:
The Tropical Medicine and Travellers (sic) Clinic. Has a British doctor, and is a little pricier than Khmer clinics, but he has a good reputation. Keeps bankers ' hours. He's located on St. 108 between Norodom and Monivong.
Dr. Suor Se (unfortunately it's pronounced like Dr. Suicide) He's Khmer, and it's rare to find a really good Cambodian doctor who looks for the source rather than just treating the symptom. He's on Kampuchea Krom, a block west of Central Market. Cheap! Speaks English, and is opened 24 hours.
I am in no way involved in the medical field...just thought it would be helpful.

Lets Talk Politics - Do you believe in the Death Penality?
Posted:

I live in Cambodia. After having more than a quarter of its population (1.7 million by most estimates) killed by its then government (Khmer Rouge), Cambodia presently has no death penalty. A tough lesson learned.

I think she's trying to do something good. I don't know why that bothers a lot of people. At least she's doing something.
I'd be one angry person if I were told that when I was an orphaned infant, a wealthy foreigner wanted to adopt me to give me a better life, but had to back down because of pressure from outsiders.

I'd be curious to know how many on this board use hostels when they travel. Where have you been, and what experiences have you had? The New York Times said that hostels have gained a lot of popularity in the past year, and I'm sure the economic downturn has a lot to do with this.

Green tea .....
Posted:
7/30/2008 12:44:14 PM
Actually satx, there is a difference when it comes to green tea as compared to other teas. First bring water to a boil, then take the water from the burner, and let sit for a couple of seconds. Do not pour boiling water over green tea leaves, and once you do, do not cover. Only let the tea steep for a couple of minutes or so. If you let it steep too long, green tea tends to become very bitter.

should the US apologize for slavery
Posted:
7/14/2008 10:52:34 AM
After a quick perusal of those opposed to apologizing for slavery on the basis that it was the misdeeds of their ancestors, and they had nothing to do with it, I noticed that most listed Christianity as their religion. For me, this begs the question....why are you still atoning for Original Sin which is the basis of the whole religion? You weren't there, and had nothing to do with it. I'm not asking this to bash your religion. I really want to know. I'm hoping that someone can give me an answer so that I can say, 'Oh....okay....that's why.'

Jefferson-(D) Louisiana facing criminal charges wants 10th Term
Posted:
6/18/2008 8:50:22 PM
I love the spirit of the people of Louisiana, but one thing that there has always been an overabundance of is corruption. In 1991, Edwin Edwards ran for governor for the fourth time. He was later sent to prison, in 2001, on racketeering charges. His opponent was David Duke, a former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
A very popular bumper sticker at that time was 'Vote for the Crook; it's important'.
At least they had a sense of humor about it.
Edwards gets out in 2011.

Yes, I'd still be against the death penalty.
I'm the one who said $3,000,000, and if you look up the different states allowing capital punishment, you'll see that I'm not far off the mark. When you consider all the costs involved, this is what the taxpayers shell out. It seems ridiculous....it is ridiculous, but this is the way the system is set up at present.

Poll: Mexicans view U.S. political leaders negatively
Posted:
6/18/2008 8:33:29 AM
It's funny....I've been living in Tijuana for nearly four years, and I've yet to meet a local who wants to go to the US. They think it's boring and lacking in passion, and they are fiercely proud of being Mexican. The ones crossing the border must be coming from farther south. Most, from the USA, probably think that every Mexican wants to migrate across the border. This simply is not true.

Katrina Anniversary

New Orleans has a lot of history. And by this, I mean people have lived there a long time with no major flooding. I am from New Orleans. My house was 120 years old. My house was never flooded.....ever. New Orleans is also a provincial town. Many of the people living in the lower 9th ward had never even left their neighborhood. New Orleans is a very poor city. It was poor before the hurricane; it's even poorer now. The city didn't house the poor below sea level. They had been living there for over a hundred years.
Now, if you want to talk about the futility of rebuilding....for now, I live in Tijuana, but now, yearly, I see hundreds, if not thousands of houses destroyed by wildfires in Southern California. Yet, they rebuild every year.

The Death Penalty - When is it ever justified?
Posted:

Some people do not choose; some people are mentally ill. I wouldn't fault a policeman who shot and wounded, or possibly killed someone who posed an immediate threat to others. Once a person is behind bars, he is no longer a threat. If he is a threat to other inmates, there are always areas with higher security.
I don't believe that prisoners who have acted heinously against society should be given any special treatment. A relatively barren cell with no frills such as television or even books would be a horrendous way to spend a couple of decades, or however long it takes before he dies. To me, that would be a greater punishment than being executed.

Well, clearly I'm in the minority on this thread. I am not against the death penalty because of the cost, but rather because it goes against my spiritual beliefs and morals. And, I don't think that any government should be in the business of taking another human being's life.
I am satisfied with my stance on this issue, and you'll no more change how I feel about this than I'll change your belief system.

As far as costs go, I was just chastised for posting links to prove my point, so if you'll do your own research, you'll see that what I say is true. I have no reason to make this stuff up.

Okay, I am definitely against the death penalty. Some posters talked about the cost of keeping someone is prison for life. In most of the states I researched, it cost nearly $3,000,000 to execute a person as opposed to $850,000 to keep that same person in a high security facility for 40 years.
I didn't mean to waste your time.
