mmm... stew...
hey hamazing!
i just make mine on the fly but you sparked an attempt at fitting one into a hallowe'en verse... somewhat in the fashion of jonathon swift's "a modest proposal"... but i got distracted by the author of a book report... thought about waiting 'til done, but i really don't know when i'll get back to it... here's where i got...

hallowe'en stew

trick or treating
brings good eating
plumped and sated
to the door

a haunted tour
a perfect lure
to herd in a few
fatted calves

the kitchen ready
her hands steady
chopping all this meat
to make the stew

...
couldn't squeeze this in that feeble attempt...

cube the meat and brown... i do it in a roast pan in the oven at about 450F, turning frequently. remove fat if excessive.
add a few cups of water... depends on how big/deep your pan is... no more than 1/4 way full... onions, garlic and seasonings as desired. turn oven down to about 250F, cover and let stew... literally... for 1 1/2 to 2 hours... the longer and slower, the better. stirring occasionally and adding water if evaporating.
add your favorite root vegetables, celery is nice as well, season to taste and let the veg cook through cook through. turn oven up to 300-350F to speed up process if desired. thicken with your choice of corn starch, flour, barley, or your favorite agent.
serve and enjoy.
package uneaten portions well and freeze for future use.

not really a recipe. more a vague recollection of how i did it last time . hope it helps.

btw. i love hallowe'en...

heya ash... gonna drop in to do right by you soon.... even though you don't care what i write. LOL

dripping
hard to breath
heat
bundled up
to stay warm
got so hot
walking
walking
following
brothers
nowhere near home

oh dear....hardly scary in a halloweeny way.... think i'll try again later :)

did I ever tell you about Charlie Brown's magic pumpkin?
it wasn't a candle that he stuffed in
he was the one who carved out the grin
you know where this is goin'

You witches are amatuers
I sired a son with a witch from Boston
she was impossible to burn at the stake
she has built in fire extinguisher glands that leak

I could tell you stories that would curl your hair
if all of you demons didn't shave down there
and what's up with the waxing?
do you like screaming?

I'll take you on a tour of a haunted house
and you will never get out
you will be frightened to death
your heart will explode within your breast

want some candy, lil girl?

Heaven and Hell

The woods were dark and wet
The leaves stuck to my shoes
The cracking branches came from behind
Heaven and hell, in the end, intertwined

Spirits rose from the swampy mud
Feasting on flesh, down to the bone
Razors tearing into my spine
The cause of the teeth was still fully unknown

I couldn’t turn around to look at it
Fear held me completely spellbound
Yet by the stench of its breath
It must be part hound

Yet how could that be
Keeping pace on two feet
My heart in my throat
At hummingbird beat

My mouth opened with screams
But no voice could be heard
I prayed to the Gods
Without using a word

Knocked down to the ground
It started to maul
Then thrown through the air
Like a half stuffed rag doll

I tasted the bark
Off an old dead tree
But the beast was still viscous
And still after me

So I ran and I ran
But the woods wouldn’t end
They got darker and wider
They just seem to extend
No air in my lungs
No thought in my head
My body on auto pilot
I knew I’d be dead

The skies opened up
The thunder began
Lightning touched down
Every direction I ran

Then like a storm
The wind became wild
The Gods were answering
Annoyed and riled

The beast was struck
Like a spear through the heart
His body was wrenching
And then tore apart

As we both lied there
And stared eye to eye
We took our last breaths
And released our last sighs

For we were one in the same
Nobody wins
A fight with my self
And the Gemini twins……..

Magic of the evening passing
music decorates your mind
gentle riffs and thundrous bits
ecstacy not left behind

stranger when he met you
now stranger no more
forsaking all the others
gliding cross the floor

raw completion offered
destiny awaits
hopes and dreams recovered
need in you partakes

glance into a mirror
see reflections there
understand in horror
even vampires wear fake hair

decorating our demons..kissing the undead back
do we dismantle fears by reversing our course
what would Bela say to a willing victim
does overpopulation play a role
in so many baring their necks
as part of the mystery
enhanced existence in a grave
(is that the only room left?)

shapeshifting from villian to hero
morphed more in novelty than revelation
new targets for the oldest game
necrophilia leaps out of the closet
boo
scary isnt far from titilation
as crossing wires becomes a hobby
too many tigers mean some eat tofu

or each other

do we choose whom we love
when we change what we choose
when choice becomes endangered
(is that ever on the list)
finding holes in a heros story
makes guilt just another color
every hole in a tree a potential target
for lumberjack love

have we fully explored our need for novelty
every stone , wet side up
goblins and beasties of every description
gored by our penetrating imaginations
sometimes pushing the limits
feels too much like shoveling lead
to be fun,
sometimes

don't turn around it's right there behind you
really there's nothing that you can do
you could try some big move from the left to the right
in the end he will get you, your time is done.........ALRIGHT???
it's the one thats scared you on all your lonely nights
the panic that always felt most real, caused such a big fright
at once he grabs your shoulder, then begins to bend
just close your eyes, put on a smile, cause this my friends the end

i was walking home alone
wishing i'd taken my car
but thought it wasn't far
and the night air seemed so clear
just had the yen to walk there
but now i had to walk home again
and it was really late....almost three....
clouds were covering the moon
so it was pitch dark
luckily i had remembered
to take a flashlight with me
just in case......
suddenly, the flashlight went out
and it was so dark
i couldn't see a thing
and got really frightened
but i had to keep going
i had to get home
and so i tried to keep walking
like blind man's bluff it felt
only no one was laughing......
took one step and began to falter
something didn't feel right
walking with no light
chills went up my back
and down my arms
but the temperature was warm.....
and then it happened
all at once i must have stepped on a stone
or root and lost my balance
and as I was falling
something flew right near my face
i could feel the breeze from its wings
but couldn't see anything
yet it felt much too close.....
i landed on the ground with a thump
and felt the pain in my ankle immediately
and then I knew I couldn't move
not even one muscle
for then the pain was unbearable.....
i screamed as those wings flew past me again
i started thinking it must be a bat
but then there was no time to think
for a whole slew of them flew
this time right at me.....
they caught in my hair
and scratched at my face
they tore at my flesh while
i desperately tried to get out of that place
but the pain really was excrutiating.....
the more i tried to get them off me
the more of them seemed to appear
attacking me in a heinous frenzy
gouging at my eyes, my mouth and my ears.....
finally i gave up my fight
and let them keep up their attack
for the rest of the night as I was
slowly eaten to death

Beware! Scary stuff lurks below.......

Something’s in the air this night
The hairs on my neck are prickling up
It may come upon us without sight
It may just wreak mayhem in a cup

The crescent moon marks its descent
As goblins crawl from empty tomb
And vampires roam in darkness pent
A tiny ballerina enters in the room

A two-foot ghost grins ear to ear
Eyes bright in a chocolate face.
They do not fear it’s dreadful leer
It’s candy time! And it’s a race!

Thoughts of scary little gnomes
Fleecing strangers for their stash
While mutant ninja turtles roam
Door to door in a frenzied dash

They will not hear it’s lurking sound
They will not notice when it first arrives
As it starts to gather ‘round
The gills turn green, let us pray, no hives…

The footsteps may slow as it settles in
Trails of wrappers left in its wake
Its come upon us with an “I told you” grin
The all Hallowed Eve little tummy ache…

You gotta wonder
how long it'll be before
some desperado
armed
with a briefcase
containing a simple
tactical
explosive
marketing plan
for
Halloween Trees
makes his pitch

imagine, trees that look they came from Dracula's front yard
you could hang little coloured lights from their dark twisted branches
green goblin heads, yellow skulls, orange pumpkins, red severed bodyparts
you could have strings of little coloured lights that flashed in sequence
giving the appearance of
bats flapping or rats skittering
or witches on broomsticks flying
or strings of shrunken heads
dancing round your tree
you could dangle drips of purple goo or green snot or coagulated blood like tinsel
you could spraycan spiderwebs on the branches or in the corners of your windows
you could wrap garlands of tiny coffins or headstones
just imagine the variety of tree ornaments that could be made available
monster collections, cat bat and rat collections, moons and witches, pirates and princesses, goblins ghosts and ghouls...
now

just imagine
if, somehow,

we add the jesus element to the equation...

today is the day
Spirit comes to play
when the veils are thin
between our worlds
so everything
can pass between them
and in so doing
we can honour
our beloved dead
where modern day
has turned it round
to say be very afraid
this dark and haunted day!
and jack-o-lanterns
were not just carvings
for children to enjoy
but were organic lanterns
put out to welcome Spirit....
just the opposite
of the darkness
and almost evil element
that has come to pass
on this of all days
called all hallow's eve
a time of special honour
before the sacredness
was slaughtered....
oh yes, today is blessed
for when the veils are thin
spiritual magic can happen
and we can connect
with all who came previously....
a day to be with our ancestors
with love and humility

just passing on these thoughts of Halloween,
as told to me just last weekend, speaking of one version of its origin
with the pagan celebration of Samhain (pronounced 'sowen')

Hallow's Eve

Together we through the bonfire gate
and carried this flame to light the grate.
You've made the table, you set me a plate.

This eve, the skins were rightly cast.
Our daughter's bride day spoke at last.
I last thought of you, our hands held fast.

How young we were that Samhain night
when the crones curled you a future bright.
And bright the apples hid my name from sight.

Long ere sunrise I stole you away,
a pledge to see fulfilled next day.
Next day we were joined and come what may.

Over starred skies dark clouds slow crept
while fresh a bride and groom we slept.
We slept in the arms of young promises kept.

Justice now sought for tradition broken.
A suitor's betrayal be vengeance awoken.
Awoken in the one named when the apples had spoken.

He waited first light then challenge was made
and so met were we, he and I in the glade,
the glade where we landed 'pon each other's blade.

Down to your knees where blood we were lying,
The betrayed and betrothed we two heard you crying.
Crying for the love of both men who lay dying.

This eve, the skins were rightly cast.
His daughter's bride day spoke at last.
His last thought of you, his heart held fast.

Together we'll open Samhain's western gate
and invite him in to come sit by the grate.
You've made the table, and for set us, your dead, a plate.

Happy Samhain/Halloween everybody!!!!

And now, I am going to talk about zombies...

An Ode to a Zombie

Oh, beautiful one
As I behold your rotting face
Oh, hungry one
My brain you want to taste

You reach out with grasping hands
I am convinced you are in love with me
I imagine our wedding
I am convinced, that you and I, are meant to be

When you bite my throat
I lean forward, and whisper give me "more
But then blood spurts out
And I am thinking, "I am really quite sore"

"This is not what I meant, when I said 'eat me'
This is not the kind of 'eat me' that a like"
You lean closer to me
And I realize that your a dyke

I run away screaming
My zombie is not who I thought my zombie was
Apparently, appearances are decieving
I didn't realize what you were, under all of that pus

Disclaimer: This is in no way a judgment against dykes, or zombies. I could not think of another word that rhymed with "like". I personally like dykes. This is in no way, shape or form, an anti-dyke post.

Thank you everybody, for reading my putrid poetry...

Again...Happy Halloween!!!

*a resurrection of the thread...in keeping with the season*

The Villa Umbra B&B
(where the g in host is invisible)

spirit
in the chimney
flies bold about the flue
but dashes neath ashes should you
near it.

spirit
in the attic
skitters in the scatter
of trunks of junk that don't matter
hear it?

spirit
in the cellar
a nast that's made a nest
of dank so dark you'd do best to
fear it!

spirit
in the window
a guest's gone geist again
the villa wants a new haunt and
you're it...

hey dime

'you're it'....

in this who-done-it
as halloween has spun it
the eve of all hallow's eve
spins the web we weave....

between the worlds of here and there
vision becomes clear
as the flag quickly unfurls
it releases all the fear....

and where the veil does spin
slowly growing thin
ancestral light of the full moon
glows on the horizon

switching seats

a subway ride
works just as well
without need of
some arcane spell
no eye of this
or twig of that
just a rail pass and
a box for my cat
we'll meet the same
as those before
the transport's changed
and nothing more
we still dance
beneath the moon
we just don't go
by way of broom

the scare

crow the poacher
tracked trapped and tried

a black oat scrag
to snatch the life

the gollows hood
to snare it

so caught
stalk stick and stuck

with shackle spells
and scratch straw stuffing

raised up
with the burlap

hangman's hat on
a cross of broom

in a pocket placed
a guilty coin

and ashes to keep
guard and ghost

in the prison
of the dead

thief's clothes

apartment hunting

scratches
there are darklings
fretting against each door
tasting a little night life floor
by floor

scratches
they're graveyard things
setting up for winter
seeking roomies with strong esprit
de couer

scratches
theirs my scars sing
getting tough to ignore
the itching where they've interviewed
before

Watching the rising waning crescent
Drinking coffee dunking a croissant
this Hallow's eve will be wet and foggy
so eat the treats before they get soggy
as Stevey Ray's statue almost swept away
by a month's record rainfall in only a day
