that takes place in Ireland, partly...

suddenly tears flowed through me
living in the uk for years filled my memory
remembering its beauty
remembering my english friends and family
and englishmen company especially....

belief makes it so
real....illusion....
imagination...creation....

treasure the memories
'they're all that's left of me'
here, tucked in safely,
in my heart, mind and body....

essential light


aqua marine stones
focus on color of present moment
peace lives
within my heart

violet stones
passions of lovers
sparks as our eyes meet
hear words of tender feelings expressed softly

Frost building on balaclavas
Footsteps muted in knee-deep snow
Under oppressive silence
We sip air too cold to inhale deeply
Scrounging for the fire
On the shores of twenty-eight

As somewhere nearby
Karl tears loose a strip of birch-bark
The harvest of nature’s incendiary gift
Elicits a Pavlovian response
From rapidly numbing fingers and toes
Which eagerly anticipate a modest blaze

Judged to be of dubious integrity
I commit an act of violence
On the hollow shell of a pine stump
Although a hundred years dead
These dry shards of history
Will still provide today

Where cedars suddenly give way to expanse
We immediately check on
Momentarily unattended lines
That may already be frozen in place
But all flags are present and accounted for

individual lives,
the sensations
of fingers tapping keys,
of hearing the phone ring,
the fragrances of dinner
still faint in the house.
each sensation is blessed.
each decision is blessed.
each tear
and each kiss
on a child's cheek,
all are blessed.

we look at the world up close.
it is obvious, or we fool ourselves
to think that what we see is what exists.
still there are cathedrals
in each of us and every living thing,
so many chambers down deep.
we look in the distance
and see nothing. but we hope.
we hope for flowers in each breath.
i look at the doors, and choose one
to pass through. standing there
in a new place i know that my life
is blessed no matter what
the character of the room.

there are paintings to be painted.

before dawn's first light
moonless stars light the sky
telling ancient stories
of the heavens .....

sometimes i remember aunt minnie,
sixty years ago, a simple,
beautiful, large woman
with hair like the moon
sitting on her indiana farm porch
rocking quietly back and forth.
"how many times i see them stars?"

sometimes i think of lili,
a beautiful, pearl skinned
7 years old, hair like the sunrise,
standing in the deep alaska snow
in her back yard, looking at the stars.
"grampa, every time i see the stars
it's like the first time i've ever seen them."

sometimes i walk frank's beach
along rosario strait,
the sound of stones under my feet,
stones as round as the moon,
and watch the northern lights
dance like seawaves around the stars.
i don't say a word. i don't have to.
i can feel the poem in my chest.

thanks, alyosha ...... one of the things that i love about poetry is that it's all reflection ..... frederic tutel wrote in his novel "van gogh's bad cafe" that "experience itself is nothing, she thought to herself, just raw earth." i think of li po, drunk, in a little boat, at night, leaping into the lake to hug the image of the moon. that's what poets do, too .....

i didn't know

i don't know how no one told me...

now i'm in another country
but they were all my family
spiritually
teaching unity...

a year and a month ago
from yesterday
she passed into the light

and no one told me

so an email arrives
out of the blue
saying hello
as if he thought i knew
sharing he's survived
since she died

and no one told me

tears flow
i didn't know
where did i go?

i came home
and i left home

in life i roam
in death she's home
in life we mourn
in death we're born

and i pray
maybe this day
for her blessing

my misty maiden she comes and goes

the smile she presents me with at the door
somehow becomes worth so much more
and the time in between to pause and reflect

This radio station that I listen to does community service radio for a couple
hours around dawn on sunday mornings, Rosie.
The first hour is a medical one with docs tossing their theories out there.
One of them said that the problem with modern medicine is that people
aren't just living longer, they're dieing longer. I found that to be profound.
I've spent a lot of time with the geri's the last few yrs. And I'm still glad
that I didn't put longentivity into my personal maintenance plan.
But, that's just me. I'm shootin for the heart attack at 60.
Think I'll pick a different target if I make it to 59?
Fifteen years seems like eternity looking forward.
But, it's yesterday if I look back. I doubt that changes with age.
One of the mysteries of the world.
