i'm not sure how to write poetry on the pof site without writing poetry. so let me tell a story. 30 years ago i was custodian in a tiny elementary school on lummi island in washington state. imagine me sliding a mop around the floor in the gym on satur day morning, listening to the sweet programming on the cbc (canadian broadcasting company)(some of the programming went back decades) when the program chair ...... damn, i'm going blank on his name but he had a saturday morning program for decades on the cbc ..... played a male duet, jussi bjorling and robert merrill, singing the male duet in georges bizet's opera "the pearlfishers." cleaning the damned school i sat down in the middle fo the gym and cried. i'd not heard as much beauty between males in my life, and i'm not gay. bjorling and merrill sing the duet with a huge amount of love that is centered in the beauty of life. again tonight, listening to the version on you tube, i had tears in my eyes. the recording was made 60 years ago.
beauty is beauty.

Mount Rose
walking the trail
breathe the thin air
elevation at 9000 feet
lush green meadows in view
silver and green and deep brown
peaks and I reach Lenticular Clouds
spring wildflowers splash the rich purple
living a shorter season in the high sierra glens
presence brings my second shot at a chance of spring
joy, we hear the call in the treetops of the Clark's Nutcracker
caaaaaaaaaaaaaa caaaaaaaaaaaa caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
fir trees look like living Christmas trees so alive
knarly old pines weathered and brown
their roots wrap granite boulders
home of the little chipmunk
speedy and focused
he (she) scurries,
the crack is

the summer rain has been falling here
gathering so much moisture
trees and ground are not brown this year
but bright green like in England
bringing me lovely reminiscing
as the Cape now looks so ripe and plentiful
growing in bounty and truly beautiful.....

while within this garden of Eden
many are seriously suffering
with health abandoning
under the stress economically
for you have to be pretty rich now
just to survive even meagerly.....

i feel the pain of so many suffering
while the rich keep coming annually
on their summer holiday with the family
and yet i find myself wondering
has not this crisis affected everybody?

it seems when there is world-wide pain
that is when many give up the game
we come together in welcome unity
we gather as one with more humility
and in humbleness we see more equality
despite the extremes and lack of harmony....
despite the obvious imbalance.....overwhelmingly...
despite the fact that few choose sobriety....

we are such a consumer society
while not coincidentally
so many are turning to spirituality
that reminds us constantly
of our essential unity....
that reminds us repeatedly
we are beings of humanity....
that reminds us unequivically
we are one in heart, mind, spirit and body

i welcome this awakening
where more are aware like never before
trusting and hoping way beyond fantasy
our unity will guide us to waters that are not so stormy
unity will carry our awareness into action in reality
unity will inspire us with more acts of kindness
honouring each person from the richest to the poorest
for despite the areas that are steeped in hierarchy
when viewing from far away, there is only one humanity

Time For Me to Shut Up

Honor of self and humanity
requires clarity and compassion.
Manifest responsibility,
within the context of community...
social... connected...

Art is found at the edge of the yin and yang
The dynamics and actions
in my mind combine
for realization.

Ahmad Jamal,
Miles Davis
and others
tell stories.

If I listen well
and fill in the spaces
around the notes
with colors,
gentle lightning bolts,
osciloscope lines...
then the transmitted
message of love
finds the mark.

The musical notes balance with the emptiness
as do our words with the space between our words.

after midnight
in detroit
feeling aimless
i drove with a friend
to canada
we circled around
under the ambassador bridge
drove among the warehouses
and waterfront detritus
and parked under the bridge.
we sat for a while
looking at detroit across the river
the splash of lights in skyscrapers
and cars inching across the bridge.
a sound came to us, a saxophone.
we looked at one another
and left our car and, under the bridge,
under the noise of traffic,
and the diamonds of city lights
on the dark night river,
we found a man playing a saxophone.
we sat on battered concrete walls
and we listened for an hour or so.
the man with the saxophone
didn't know we were there.
he played jazz, mimicking the sounds
of cars and trucks on the bridge,
serendaing the crystal lights in tall buildings,
the dark river with passing ships,
and the motionless summer air.
when he stopped
we walked out of the darkness.
"we've been listening. thank you."
"i've been listening, too."
we laughed, and introduced ourselves.
he said "my name is sonny rollins."

Mighty mountain,
strong, silent, peaceful ...
Rivers flow down and around you.
Life clings to your slopes.
Rivers of water,
rivers of hope,
rivers of light,
rivers of love.
Above your peak only sky,
Gentle birds fly and pause.
Your home is on this orbiting sphere,
this natural realm
where the rocks have old spirits
and the tree roots embrace the earth
with passion and security.
The tree is in place,
and is the child of the mighty mountain,
green and brown with water and soil, living one life.
I love this tree. I love the mighty mountain.
 Perfectly me

Blue Collar

It's different in the high desert,
there's an openness
that clears your cluttered sky
and simplifies your life.

At first you worry
about clothes and makeup;
then the wind takes over
and refuses you a hairdo,
sculpting its own style
wild with freedom.

You stop thinking about how you look
and begin talking in grocery lines;
[any line will do, parking lots too]
by the time you checkout,
the clerk thinks you came in together
and wonders who's paying.
You'll probably never see one another again,
so you just smile...and share a look.

Friends become family, lives entwined,
reliable, and children are shared treasures
desert tanned and tough;
growing sturdy roots, catching lizards,
slathered with sunblock
playing in the chaparral.

My friend Tina's favorite holiday
is the 4th of July.
Her house has the most
fantabulous firework show!
It gets bigger every year
longer, more elaborate;
this year they used a ladder
and man, was it beautiful.

We sit on lawn chairs
in front of her turquoise-blue home,
the air cooled in a soft evening breeze,
and sparklers are held tight
by each grubby little fist.

We remember our own
fairy-tale sparklers,
as we help the young
fire up their magic, then
dunk burnt ones in barreled water.

Anticipating dusk
the scarlet sun sinks,
burrowing down
beneath a red-hawk horizon.

Fountains of lava stars delight,
how divine, dragon tears cry
and universes explode,
going on and on forever.

My sweetheart whispers,
“I want to sing the Star Spangled Banner.”,
grinning and leaning over I joked,
“You first.”

Soon after, they light one called
“The Patriot” and I can't resist,
I began to sing, “Oh say, can you see,
by the dawn's early light...”
Solomon sings with me;
one by one everyone sings,
“...O'er the land of the free
and the home of the brave”.

We are all Americans
together in this moment, loving
our homeland and our families
with free, triumphant hearts.

Hey Rosie and River, one of my scattered visits, I know, I know, just not much time to spend fooling around having too much fun, I'm mostly just dealing with a busy life.

How are your beautiful grand babies, mine are so wonderful the light the day for me.

Truth does come in time,
one step at a time
to be free,
to change direction
"To thine own self be true"

The clouds are just temporary.
The sun is always shining above them.
Stand in the sun, raise your arms, salute the day.
Breathe deep the new and cool air, for life is here and love is now.

....He is writing poetry
although the new place is not so understanding....

was so happy to see phish's name
felt a momentary pain
realizing he's still not able
to share here his wonderful writing
so sending him and linda much healing
hoping somehow the new place will stop dealing
in too much animosity and power pushing
and any possibility of negativity and labelling
preventing him from freely creating his writing
and may the time move quickly when he will again
be able to walk back into freedom

thinking of alexander solzhenitsyn
in a stalin prison, writing ... in his mind ...
"one day in the life of ivan denisovitch,"
writing it in his memory, reciting it every day
before he started writing again in his mind.
shen he was free he could recite his story
from his heart & his mind.

remembering anna akmahtova
standing with mothers every day
outside a prison that held their sons,
standing, silently, every day
during cold russian winters
and intense summers.

i worked in a prison
years ago and, to this day,
the sound of great metal cage doors
three of them, slamming slowly behind me
one by one until i was inside and
each evening, when i left to go home.
slam!! slam!! slam!! not only can i hear
the sound i can still feel the sound,
an impact outside and inside me.

phish and his mom,
the story retold
of solzhenitsyn and akmahtova
and i wish them well.
even in the darkness
there can be song.
i love each of you.

Finding My Home

I was walking the trail
in the east bay hills
on a beautiful August day.
Majestic oak tree,
you are trusted and loved.
Wind rustles through your
green and brown leaves.
I hear the soft sound.
That familiar scent
of California Bay Laurel
drifting in the air ~ everywhere.
I smile.
My spirit soars.
There is not a sound.
Hush, hush...
The city does not come to this corner.
Spirits of the ancestors never leave.
Shadows on the path draw pictures,
guiding my random thoughts among the tracks
of the deer and coyote...
Tall wild oats sway and bend.
Golden now in summer warmth.
Sweat is released as I trudge the trail.
I breathe.
Sunlight illuminates the double peaked mountain,
dominating the colorful landscape.
I am home.

Thank you for writing r

Innocence, purity,
children have these qualities.
Lovely, beautiful children with wide eyes.

I promised myself to remember
the way I felt when I was a child ... always.

As the summer closes
I see how I have changed and grown.

The life of the adult
centers on responsibilitiies
combined and balanced
with the joy of living.

Children and family
depend on us,
offering us spiritual growth.
Growth in truth and insight,
through the sharing of pain and beauty.

lili is 6 now
laughing with her mom
in anchorage
lili leads me back
to my child,
to the child in me
and reminds me
of the pueblo prayer
that her dad, brendan,
when he was her age
said every morning
when he woke up:
"now this is what we believe:
the mother of us all is earth,
the father is the sun,
the grandfather is the creator
who bathes us with his mind,
the grandmother live life to all things,
the brother is the beast and trees,
the sister are those with wings.
we are the children of earth
and will do no harm in any way.
we do not offend the sun
by not greeting it at dawn.
we praise of grandparents for their creation.
we share the same breath together .....
the beasts, the trees, the birds, the people."
then bren would bound from his bed
into my heart like lili does today.

..... the pueblo prayer was told to nancy wood by a pueblo elder.
she shares it, and othr songs, in her book "many winters."

As the sun set
tonight just before 8,
it appeared as a red ball.
The color was brilliant
and then turned orange
as it dove behind the hills.
It captivated me
and I watched
the setting sun.
I have hibiscus plants.
Some have a vibrant
and brilliant shade of red.
Others are
a gentle orange
or pink.

if, using words, beauty is made
it is not wearied by time or edges frayed
it burns strong thoughout the night
its mesaage shining in the light

if those words a story make
they echo long as silence they break
reverberate within our soul
keep us warm even if cold

but written word needs seeking eye
as all others will pass them by
eyes to heart, and heart to mind
all now ever will you bind

all things are possible in the world of men
when our actions are driven by a pen
for whenever we run out of words
all that is left is the sword

the most lovely smile.
Eyes twinkle.
Fresh peaches
delight my tongue
with sweet juice.
Golden sunrise,
warming mountain tops,
warming my body.
The lake
is still, silent.
Scent of sage.
My hands and feet
touch soft earth.
slowly opens
her eyes,
lifts her head
looking over the log.
Cool air
lifts the Mountain Bluebird
to the treetops.
A summer day
I live to love.

what a beautiful page
reading all upon my gaze
feelings flew like from a sage
seeing the love upon this stage
reading truths within each heart
a writer's gift..the words they impart
where empathy comes through
even when not meaning to
suddenly another's company
you feel sincerely
captured love
within the lines
written with humility
transmitted freely
received gratefully
here to find within my mind
a window into soul where there's no time
and love does flow from this visual light show

life tumbles
like love
from tarns
among ice peaks
its journey
to the sea
asks nothing
only to be
like water
from the mind
the wetness of lips
the simple aging
at the base of our necks
between the gathering
of breasts
the sweet curve
of bellies
and the sweet flow
of sexual juices
down our legs
to the sea
above the sea
and sun
the moon
and stars

I was moved to tears
by a performance
by Lennie Niehaus
on alto sax,
of a song titled,
"Stella By Starlight".

"The song a robin sings
Through years of endless springs,
The murmur of a brook at e-ven-tide
That ripples by a nook where two lovers hide.
A great symphonic theme,
That's stella by starlight and not a dream.
My heart and i agree
She's ev'ry - thing on earth to me.
A great symphonic theme,
That's stella by starlight and not a dream.
My heart and i agree
She's ev'ry - thing on earth to me.
She's ev'ry - thing
On earth to me."

~Stella By Starlight
by Victor Young
Ned Washington

As a man,
the beauty
in listening to music
often makes me pause
and feel gratitude and joy .

When I hear lovely music
or when I find beauty
anywhere in nature,
I am at once brought
to the thoughts of
the woman
who holds
my heart.
It is the truest
sense of joy
in my life.
I love you so.
