Boycott college football until there's a playoff!Page 5 of 5    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
This 90% of the fans that favor the playoff system. Where did this number come from?

From what I read in this Thread so far most people don't really care one way or the other

Perhaps he did an informal poll asking his kids, grandmother and the cat?

There is no argument for not having a playoff, Smaller schools would be able to compete if they could recruit and be able to tell the kids they will have a shot at the title,

I hope I live to see the day when it's Ball State playing against Arkansas State for the National Championship.

It might be nice. However it is as liekly as the New Orleans Saints playing the Detroit Lions in the Super Bowl. Just doesn't seem like it will ever happen.

This is just one poll that has come out in the last 6 months or so that clearly shows around 90% of fans being in favor of a playoff. There have been several on ESPN.com and a few other sites but I wasn't able to find them in their archives or I'm not looking in the right place. Anyway, with that high of a percentage of fans being in favor of changing the current system that should definitely say alot.

Opinion polls conducted by ESPN are not considered to be valid or reliable indications of anything other than the fact that a question was asked and people responded.

Huh??? What other type of proof are you looking for? I mean, if these polls are conducted and college football fans are responding then it's giving us a pretty fair representation of how many of us are in favor of a playoff. If you really don't believe this then do you own poll. Just start asking people you know that like C.F. or even strangers if they're in favor of a playoff. I guarantee you almost every one will say yes. See for yourself...

All this poll could state is that 90% of the participants of this group said yes. That does not mean this group represents 90% of the real population, This is not a valid or reliable piece of information. Ask anyone that does this kind of work. The poll was not valid.

Every other division of college football has had a playoff for years and every other sport has one. Why should Div. I be any different?

Different strokes for different folks it's what makes the world go around.

I kinda like it the way it is get to watch more games.
The Bowl season starts around Dec. 19th until the BCS game first week in January.
There's still going to be a Championship game and a National Champion one way or the other. Funny think about Utah is had they had to share the championship with florida, wonder where they would be ranked going into the 2009 season.

So how do you expand this boycott? You have made your point here, however much like the inaccurate 90% you throw about , the members participating in the forum here at POF will not make much of an impact in shutting down college football. Do you have a plan to back up your post?

Please convince me a #16 can beat a #1 in the first round. In more than two decades, a #16 has never beat a #1 in the NCAA basketball tourney in both men's and women's. This is a tournament, famous for its Cinderellas and upsets. So again, pray tell how Buffalo will beat Florida.

If the biggest sports tournament can't keep viewership and attendence from dropping, what makes you think a college football tournament won't have an adverse effect on the bowls. You have yet to explain your side.

I think I would rather watch a evenly matched Bowl game then to watch #16 Buffalo play against # 1 Florida in a playoff.

Maybe that's one of the reason's there is not a playoff is because if Florida did have to play Buffalo, Florida would probally be 35 point favorites and vegas needing them to cover without getting any players hurt.

I agree that the top 16 is a good place to start. Problem is the method of ranking the teams? If you no longer rank the teams using the BCS, how do you rank the teams and therefore how do you determine how a team becomes ranked in the top 16. After eading all of the back and forth I am surprised that no one has picked up the most most glaring problem with the agruemnet for the palyoof system. Really, does the playoff system eleiminate the problems we have determining rankings in general?

In order to win the 64 team NCAA basketball tournament, a team must win 6 straight games, against increasingly more powerful opponents.
If you had an NCAA football tournament with the top 16 teams, that would add another 4 games to the champion's season. The 2 final teams would play a 17 or 18 game season. I think that's way too much for college football players.
Does anyone really think that the #16th ranked team has ANY valid argument for being considered as best team ???
Only the top 8 teams should play for the championship.

As far as ranking the teams.
Win% + Avg. Opponents Win % = the teams rating.
Very simple and easy to understand.

And when three or more teams finish with a one loss record and another 5 teams finsih with a two loss record you base the ranking for the playoff how? If you take away the BCS, which we would since it would not be needed we suddenly have traded one problem for another problem. Otherwise in theory you could have a weaker team of 16 teams advance to the finals by beating other weaker teams of the 16 to end up with a very boring championship game?

I have no problem using a system like the Div. 1 does. Of course, that means a much shorter regular season for everybody if they are going to get away with only 15 games.
A lot of teams would have to drop non-conference games completely. It would probably mean no more annual Notre Dame/USC and a lot of other traditional rivalries.

Take a look at some of those smaller bowls played before Christmas. I notice a lot of empty seats . Certainly, those bowls would love to get some better marquee teams as part of a playoff system to make more money.
