this morning
after the snow
stopped falling
i put a simple table
on the deck
below the trees
their branches
drooping happily.
i poured hot water
into a small japanese teapot,
dropped a bag
of sweet rose tea
into the steaming water
and sat on wooden chair
i dragged from the dining room.
the sun is bright and warm.
the wouth wind off the sea
is cool. i gather my vest around me
take a sip of the tea, i smile
and i know that i'm home.

Why must life be reduced
to the trivial,
the mundane, when the air is free
and the sky is endless?

My grandmother is gnarled
like some impossibly old tree
a different person than the
one that held me on her knee
not really but
sometimes it's hard
to see
I kiss her parchment
forehead and she asks me
about the whereabouts of
dead relatives, she says she
would rather be selling apples
and I believe her

How short and small our time
Together here,
To nurture love and
Hide from fear we journey
Long and solemn roads with
Sighing elms and peeping toads
And in the end I must suppose

It's the people we hold dear that

for rosie, on the road

from a shelf
of boxes and bags
i found an old sack
of loose pu ehr,
the tangled and gamey
high tea of china.
i bought the florid leaves
too long ago
in chinatown
on vancouver's grimey east side.
i took, from a high shelf,
a small pot, made in the mountains
of taiwan. a gift.
and i remembered
another gift, a tiny, delicate cup
made by hand in a japanese village
of potters. then a sprinkle of tea,
and a cascade of simple hot water
i sit behind the glass wall
in bright sun, and look into
the surrounding forest.
hummingbirds are here now
and they have brought the delicate season.
i enjoy my first sip,
savor the flowers on my tongue
and read the recluse poet stonehouse:

"i live far off in the wild
where moss and woods are thick
and plants perfumed.
i can see mountains
rain or shine
and never hear market noise.
i light a few leaves in my stove
to heat tea. to patch my robe
i cut off a cloud.
a lifetime seldom fills a hundred years.
why suffer for profit and fame?"

Why did Mary have ONE baby?
Two would have been better, maybe,
To share that burden so demanding,

Christ must have been one lonely guy
