What kind of guitar strings do you use?Page 3 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
Nope. I have a bunch of old Ibanez Destroyer II and they sound great with 9's over 10's. I bought a new JS 1200 and my back thanks me now, but I still use the same setup because andthing lighter on the bottom doesn't feel right. I like that thunk you get out of a heavier string.

This guitar lends itself to some speed, but I set the action somewhat higher because my band is doing a lot of classic rock, so tone was more important. You can't dupicate Gilmoore without a fat sound, so the higher yet softer action with the Rose gives me the ability to get his sound. Rush and the like are no problem either.

Pickups, height, tremolo tension, etc. all seem to make a vast difference to the instrument as a whole. It's interesting to see what other people are using.

For my acoustics, I am an Elixir fan all the way.

For my electrics, I all depends on the sound I am trying to get. I usually use either Ernie Balls or Gibsons. I tend to use flat-wounds sometimes too.

And I tend to agree with TakeDaily when it comes to setting up your guitar correctly. Without proper intonation, what difference does string brand or gauge make?

Was I seeing things or did I see an add in a magazine that Jimmy Page was coming out with or has his own line of guitar strings??? IDK.

I still have the stock strings that came on mine since its brand new. But Im thinking of going with a heavier guage set when I switch pickups. More of an SRV blues tone.

I have six guitars, so it depends on the guitar. I use D'Addarios for my classical. As for all my other guitars, it depends on which string breaks and when and what strings I have around. If I need a whole new set I'll buy either D'Addarios or Ernie Balls...which ever is less expensive at any given time. If one of my guitars needs a whole new set, I might buy light guage or medium guage, silver wound.
There are other factors, of course...where I buy strings. I prefer a place on 14th street in Manhattan than those (uhemmmm) on 48th street.

Depends if we are talking about electrics or acoustics. For Electrics I was using 13 - 56 nickel until the string pressure split the headstock off my Les Paul Studio. Switched to a 12-52 nickel set after that.

Oh acoustic I use a 54-12 Phosphor Bronze.

Another vote for D'Addario lite on my electric. I generally practice unplugged, and for this purpose they work well.

Mostly Ernie Balls, 11-52 gauge for my Fenders and Gibsons. Not particularly a fan of the name brand strings i.e. Fender strings, Gibson strings etc. They make great guitars, but the same cannot be said for their strings!

I use GHS Boomers Zakk Wylde gauges are .10-.60 but I have the low version on my guitar at the moment. Those are .11-.70, I really like the low tones and the richer sound it produces. Plus with distortion it gives it a better bite and chugs while palm muting.

I endorse Cleartone electric and acoustic strings. Best sounding strings every, even for metal! I use .11 gauge on my ESP .13 gauge on my Schecter, tuned down to a baritone setting. All I need is Cleartone 7 and 8 string guitar string sets and I'd be set for life.

Depends on the guitar and what it's gonna be used for. Most of the (11) axes are setup with GHS 11's right now and the 2 basses have elixirs. The 2 acoustics are running GHS phosphor Bronzes.

I use CLEARTONES now for my acoustic! Best strings ever hands down!

on my electric guitars I now exclusively go Dunlop 10s
Why?
I can beat the shit out of my strings and they won't break

D'Addario's on my electric. I got a 20-pack and those are the only strings I've used since I had my guitar so I don't really have experience with any others.

I actually use Darco, Jim Dunlop or Galli in 10-46's. I build solidbody electric ukes, mandos and tenor guitars, and there's really not a whole lot of difference. If you're a sweaty player I'd always recommend cheap strings... better shiny new cheap strings than dull old expensive ones!

Currently, I use Rotosound electric guitar strings on all my electrics, with the exception being my 12 string electric, which I use Pyramids. Mostly I use 12-52s, but my Paul Reed Smiths play well with 11-52. Rickenbackers get 12-52 flatwound, Tele gets 10-52 only because it's old.

Acoustic guitars get the Elixir treatment, being the Polyweb 13-56 gauge, 80/20 bronze.

On my Jazz Bass, Rotosound Jazz Bass 77s are used, 45-105, flatwound.

My classical uses Savarez Extra High tension.

The Ernie Ball, OLP, EVH Wolfgang, Frankenstein and "5150" get Rotosound 10-46 if I'm tuned to standard, 10-52 if I tune to Eb.

For the most part, I tune to A-440, but one of my Strats, and depending on what I am doing, the EVH guitars go down to Eb.

Try to stay away from the DR strings. While they're great when you get a good set, too many messed up sets are going around. I used to love them, and then I bought 3 consecutive bad sets. I said "F- this."

The Rotosound strings are absolutely amazing. They last long, sound great, feel great, and stay in tune well. I've always had problems with my intonation with DRs.

I hope this sheds some insight to what some guitarists do with their equipment.
