They just make the best of everything.

Every day:

"Of every 100 men, 10 should not even be here;
80 are nothing more than targets;
9 of them are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, they the battle make;
Ah, but the one.
One of them is a warrior, and he will bring the others back"

- Heraclitis, 500 B.C.

For you history buffs, he was referring to Achilles.

A few wise things I live by.

In most things, never give your best; always do what you feel is just enough to get by. If you succeed, great. If you fail, you can always entertain yourself with the idea that you MIGHT have succeeded, but really didn't care enough to try harder. Very few things in any person's life truly deserve a "best effort".

if attacked, stand your ground, and retaliate with what will later be described by on-lookers as "an alarming lack of restraint".

The world ends when you're dead. Until then you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and Give some back.

Lots of us in the GYE are talking like farmers, tired of rain and snow. The thing is, we could be staring down an early fire season instead. I can't complain about mud however much it !@#$%n' ^&***(**s me off.

So many come to mind. Congrats to all those who have so far posted! Great topic OP!

"The bad guy is never a bad guy...in his eyes. Talking may bring out the good points and give you a chance to work with that person. If not, you can kill him quickly and without regrets.": Robert Heinlein
"Once is a mistake...twice is a coincidence. Three times is an act of war." (Or a conspiracy!) : Winston Chirchill.
"Youth is wasted on the young". : Any oldtimer, any century, any country.
"A soldier never wants to practice war....he knows the horrors it brings. He also knows that he must do so in order to keep his family, friends, and neighbours "free". He would rather let the other guy "die for his cause" rather than go and die for his country...and works hard at making that happen!" Unknown.

"Legislating language use is always a death knell for that society. As is the commonality of bad manners. With these two in any place at the same time, that society is rotting, much as Rome did. It won't last long." I don't know who said it.

Joe DiMaggio was a class act all the way -- no more so than the regard and respect he showed Marilyn DiMaggio.... oh right -- I guess she didn't really use that name, now did she....

Even if Joe had wanted to race to the front and fight Hitler in hand-to-hand combat it would have been blocked by those that know it does far more harm to morale to place a high profile celebrity in harms way and have them blown to bits -- than any good it could do on the ground -- there's better cannon fauter.
