^^^ a strong point. when i was looking at profiles and saw that a woman rode, i'd click to the next. riding is not a good risk, and i'd hate to get the phone call that the love of my life got smeared across three lanes by some lane-changer with a vision problem.

you can twist an ankle break a leg, have a heart attack or other limb running or working out at the gym and choke on that healthy food.

this statement assumes all risks are equally likely, equally harmful and equally optional. this is incorrect.

giving up food is not an option (for those who want their life to continue, anyway). giving up riding and its attendant risks is. i'm not aware of any research showing exercise increases risk of heart attack, but riding certainly increases risk of death or injury. exercisers get injured, sure, but when exercise is done correctly, it offers a favorable ratio of risk to benefit.

meanwhile, motorcycles simply fail the risk/benefit assessment: lifespan and physical quality of life vs. lifestyle. they're like tobacco. stories abound of the pack-a-day smoker who lives to be 100, but far more common is the smoker who fails to reach the median lifespan, and has no quality of life in the final years. sure, there are old bikers out there. actuarials will tell you how much the exception they are, and how common are riding-related deaths and permanent injuries.

At 70 plus a helmet is not going to do much if you got to lay it down.
Riding is about the freedom and not the dictated politics of a politically correct society. What the h*ll is the matter with people today. Did you need a helmet to ride your bicycle 40 years ago? Phffft! Seems the flower power people of the 60's are now the whiners of the todays generation. Hipocrits!

One perspective is that most of the people stupid enough to reject wearing a helmet are also stupid enough not to have the type of medical and long-term disability insurance needed to cover such an injury.
Head traumas are probably one of the worst life-wrecking injuries one can suffer. This spells big money for initial treatment, recovery and rehabilitation.
If a person has permanent disabilities, then it's even more money...the type of money that bankrupts a person and puts them into government-funded subsistence and care programs.
Helmets were mandated to save the government and insurance companies money--not to save the riders.

Guys , What are your thoughts on women with Harleys.

My opinion on anyone who rides a Harley is the same. Harleys are slow motorcycles for old people that travel in packs. Now, a woman who rides a super sports bike would be hot.

I've never understood the fascination with harley's, other than
they supposedly represented the american way or something.
The Indians were the original american bike and I personally,
was pretty disappointed when they lost the harley indian war back
in the early 70's or whenever.
If I could find a nice working original indian chief I'd buy it
in a heartbeat. (I've seen them at meets...they do exist)
If not...I'd settle for a BMW touring bike, they're mostly ugly,
yet I can't look away.
People will jump in with the usual comment about if you've never
owned a harley you just won't understand etc....but I can take it.

^^^^ That's sort of interesting, although I didn't read it all.
What's that got to do with women on harleys?

Is that some "tooting" I'm hearing?

I said YOU CAN not those things will have happen for whos assuming!?

no one. you framed your contention is terms of risks, not certainties. so did i.

try not putting words into others people post.

i didn't. i pointed out why comparing risks of actions like eating and riding a motorcycle are invalid.

just you think its incorrect doen't mean its so...

riding a motorcycle increases the risk of death or injury. this isn't a matter of opinion.

per the national highway traffic safety administration: “Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists are about 35 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash.”

How the heck did this topic turn into how dangerous motorcycles
are? That wasn't even the original question.

Lots of sports and interests that people have are dangerous...that
wasn't really the point of the topic.

But why should I be surprised? Topics here morph all the time...usually
they end up talking about fat people and eating raw. If I wasn't so lazy,
I'd scroll someone dragged in fat people and carrot sticks in

bet someone dragged in fat people and carrot sticks in

it's been proven that overweight people who eat raw vegetables have a 100 percent chance of death.

I don't know what you mean with "eating raw", but to keep the topic from straying, I guess the question should have been "Would you date a fat woman with a Harley?"

35 years of riding... and I work in insurance, I think I understand and mitigate the risks quite well.

A girl riding, is always sexy and empowering, no matter what she is on.
those of you that dont do it, wont get it. the horse is as close as an parallel you are gonna get.

And I know of several Vrods that will set off car alarms ;)

The ones I can't stand are the show-off poseurs with the straight ultra-noisy pipes who just ride down the same stretch of road and back to show off to their friends and then park their bikes in front of the local coffee shop... to show off some more.

Unfortunately, half (or more) of the riders in my area are of the seasonal Poseur sort.

show-off poseurs... what is this ...??? ...I do not understand this attitude ...To me it matters not whether you ride or why you ride .... you can be a so called poseur or a 1% er ...well maybe we should leave outlaw bikers out of this ....everyone likes to show off their possessions whether the career, the house, the motorcycle, the boat , or the trophy wife this is why we like to have nice looking things ..its human nature .... to many people a motorcycle does have an allure... that only people that ride can understand ...but to label someone a poseur because of their style of riding ...sounds like jealousy to me bike has not been out of the garage in over a year ..I still visit her from time to time ..but circumstances dictate that I spend my time doing other things ... At one time in my life I logged hundreds of miles a year ... and when that time returns ...I will have my bike ... so label me a poseur If you want

to that I only have one comment......suck , squeeze ,burn ,blow....

I was wondering wondering if this was some kind of biker thing though, because I was suprised they had the audacity to do such thing? LOL

no this was some kind of jerk thing ... there are jerks with bikes ... there are jerks with pickup trucks..there are jerks in 18 wheelers and there are jerks in BMWs you dont have to look far to find a jerk in any group ...but to even ask if being a jerk is a biker thing ...well that shows that even you can be a jerk ....making generalizations is the earmark of a jerk ...these bikers probably arnt jerks all the time ...just shows we need to be carefull about being a jerk

when people are looking at you while you're revving your straight-piped POS, they AREN'T thinking that you're cool...

again being inconsiderate of others is being a jerk ... first I would never make my pipes open up in a residential area ...second I care too much for my bike to rev it up when parked ...anyone who knows anything about a combustion engine knows there is more stress placed on a engine revving than any thing you can do to one ...I never open my throttle unless im accelerating down the road ..... not only because I dont want to disturb your peace .... but because i like my bike to last .... my pipes are no louder than your SUV when im driving normal ... agreed about 4 grand they get loud ...but if my bike is turning 4 grand then im moving down the interstate ...and all you will hear is a zing when I go by you

Then you're not one of the riders I'm talking about.

well I agree with you ...but just call them jerks that have no respect for others ....poseurs is a term that some bikers have adopted for recreational riders ... in the past hard core bikers resented sharing the highway with bikers that ride for recreation ...who had a job and ride on weekends the term poseur has become somewhat a slap in the face of recreational riders who respect everyone and just want to enjoy their hobbies.... I agree with you on the jerks but the term poseur is what I objected to ...the riders you are talking about don't even deserve being called poseurs ... thankfully this attitude is dying...and more hardcore bikers are becoming accepting of other riders ..maybe if we get rid of the jerks...the people like you will gain respect for bikers

Having dated a girl that rode a Harley with her "crazy biker boyfriend" when she was a kid essentially, I found the stories of those days kind of entertaining. What I didn't find entertaining was this tinge of pride that always came out about how out there she and her biker friends were, how hardcore they were compared to say, oh, you and anyone you know, etc. etc. ad nauseum. That phony nostalgia got very tired. Perhaps I read it wrong, but each discussion of those people and that time of her life tended to end up with a lot of "you don't understand" condescension and the like. Booooring.

When I was ten years old, my father spun out of loose gravel after my baseball game - and his foot was stuck on the accelerator for a while. Needless to say, it took hours for the emergency room to get the gravel from the meat of his entire left side. The added benefit was that I got to watch my father recover just laying on the couch for months, and seeing the wounds blistering before they healed. Good times, good time ...

Now that IS interesting, since 'motorcycles' have a hand throttle.
But, that's okay. I have seen motorcyclist also spin things around to meet their needs..such as the good old standby; "had to lay her down" line.

I rode a police motorcycle for 17 years. I have had my own personal motorcycle, ever since I got a hand-me-down from my brother at the age of 10. I've gone down a couple of times, one serious (drunk rear ended my police bike), others not so serious, but they all hurt.

What bothers me are the posers..those who think riding an hour on Saturday in their local Chapter of _________ (fill in the blank), with all their pins and do-dads on their vests, all dressed up in chaps, vests, leather doo rags, back slapping about the long ride they just had from the last bar they were at..oh, and don't forget the bumper stickers on their cars..yeah, they are "bikers", "bro". They all seem to have a four + year old bike in the garage that has less then 3,000 miles on it. Love their ads you see every once in a while..never ridden in the rain..LOL Yeah, they're bikers all right..yup..

A woman with their own bike, great. As long as they are not so brainwashed that they think there is ONLY one brand in this world, I think that is fine.

As a long time woman rider , gotta put my two cents in.

First, there are many other makes of bikes that women ( and men) ride, besides Harleys.

I've had just about all of 'em over time - including a Harley, along with all styles - cruisers and sportbikes. I love 'em all.

Some men love that I ride - some steer clear . Whatever , their choice (or loss).

I've dated ( and married) some who ride , and some who don't . I'm not an obsessive rider, and don't mind if my man doesn't ride - as long as he supports the fact that I do. I wouldn't be at all happy with periodic lectures on "how dangerous" riding is . LIFE is dangerous.

Seems like most people feel the same way. Their partner needn't do EVERYthing they do - but at least tolerate - or at best , cheer them on !

Well, perhaps the biggest problem could be what kind of sleazebags she hangs out with and calls them friends - Harley or not.

One "idiot" that I was dating for a while last November told me this sweet story about how she learned to ride by taking lessons, etc. To cut a long story short, she ended up watching a porn movie, visiting a sex shop, etc., with the teacher. Now, that's a very sweet, little story and it tells a lot about her integrity and her great character.

Anyway, I just had to squeeze that one in there. No offence to women who are serious about it. :)
