Best Pro Wrestler of all timePage 3 of 9    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
Goocher-

For the record, I always thought the Wall had a lot of potential, especially for his size. He could move, and considering he was trained by the Power Plant, which had to be the most useless school in existance, he wasn't bad in there.

Unfortunately, he never got to see that potential, as he passed away a couple of years ago.

Now, I'm going to break down several wrestlers that have been mentioned in this thread... not just on their work, but also on their interviews, historical signifigance, and their impact on the business, positive or negative, mainly because I am so nuts about wrestling I want to make it my career, but also because it's 1 AM and there's no one to talk to :)

Ric Flair
-Pros: Was incredibly effective in a top spot for 25 years. That kind of longevity is amazing. Put together some of the most memorable matches of that time frame.. in his prime, it was said he could carry a broomstick to a **** match. One of the best interviews ever.
-Cons: Could be argued that he worked the same match for much of those 25 years. Alienated a lot of workers in his creative power. Should've retired 10 years ago.
-Overall, he's up there. Definitely. He should really walk away while he CAN walk away.

Ricky Steamboat
-Pros: Was perhaps the most fluid wrestler that ever worked. Had some damn memorable matches, and was effective in many different roles throughout his career. Put anybody over, was always a team player.
-Cons: Never worked heel. Wasn't particularly charismatic, and never was a great interview. Outside of his programs with Flair and Savage, wasn't in many particularly memorable angles. Most of his strikes were overly contrived looking and very, very fake looking.
-I'd put him near the top peg of workers, but I'd have some reservations about making him a top guy.

Bret Hart
-Pros: Had a lot of great matches. Incredibly influential in that he was one of the first smaller heavyweights to make it in a top spot in the "age of big men". Maybe the best "storyteller" in the ring.
-Cons: Was only TRULY effective on the mic as a heel. Bought his own BS. Five. Moves. of. Doom.
-I'd put him in that top echelon.

Shawn Michaels
-Pros: The most exciting wrestler to make it in a top spot. Could work any style of match. Incredibly charismatic, could work at any spot in the card, and was equally as effective as a baby or a heel. Influential in initiating the "attitude" era.
-Cons: Unprofessional little f_ck. Abused his power, and from all accounts, his "religion" hasn't change any of that.
-I honestly think that Shawn was the complete package in the ring, as much as his antics disgust me. I'd put him as my #1, more than likely.

Chris Benoit
-Pros: Overall, the best worker to ever live. Could brawl, go to the air, or mat-wrestle as well as anyone in the business... maybe ever.
-Cons: Not a lot of memorable storylines. Was a horrible interview for much of his career.
-In the ring, just amazing, but wasn't enough of a complete package to be placed on that upper elechelon, but he's close. Probably along the same level as Steamboat.

Hulk Hogan
-Pros: Amazing interview, had a strong knowledge of psychology. Had a strong run on top for well over 15 years.
-Cons: Was a primary factor in the "big man era". Was at best lazy, at worst rather deteriorated in the ring. Used his influence and power to push his friends and screw over more deserving workers. Won't stay away.
-Important, but belonging on a best of all time list? No way.

I'll do more tomorrow.

Rowdy Roddy Piper.....definately one of the greatest wrestling entertainers of all time, and he laid the foundation for on camera interviews. Wrestlers still try to imitate him....but he is the original and best interviewee of all time...with only Ric Flair coming close. Don't know if I would put Brutus or Snooka at the same level through. IMHO there are very few wrestlers that can even be mentioned in the same sentence as: Piper, Flair, or Bret Hart. They are the Babe Ruths of wrestling. Currently I dont see any of todays wrestlers having the impact on the sport that the 80's wrestlers had. Perhaps the closest would be The Rock since he effectively reached and succeeded on the big screen.

I would agree that Hall and Nash were the stuff when they were a team. One of the greatest teams. Flair was also on top of the "Cool meter" when he was in his prime...whoooo.
I would have to argue with the greatest moral wrestler being Hogan. Preached a lot of eating your vitamins and saying your prayers, then would go in the back and shoot up. hmmmmm. Kinda like Madona telling girls to not have sex, then hooking up with Dennis Rodman...dont ya think?

That is because they were standard bad guys, with nothing real special about them other than their matches with Hulk Hogan. It is real easy to play a bad guy character because all you have to do is insult people. Playing a good guy is much much more difficult. The most difficult is to pull off what is a heal character but have him come across as a face, such as the Rock, Stone Cold, Undertaker. That is one of the things that makes those characters so great...they have so much diversity because they can be either the heal or face, or both, in matches. Right now I would say the best characters that rides the gray very well is Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle. They are both fantastic at pulling switches. Even when acting in the heal character, they play a great comedic role.

I'm surprised that nobody is talking about guys like Million Dollar Man or Shane McMahon.
Million dollar man was the ultimate heel for a number of years back during the heyday of wrestling. His role was so popular that Vince himself took it over to make the whole Austin vs McMahon thing.

And Shane had some of the most memorable matches in wrestling history in his very brief time in the ring. His match against Kurt Angle, the match where he jumped off the Jumbotron to elbow Big Show. Unreal.

And how about The Rock???

Go to any video store that carries VHS tapes. You are likely to find some old NWA or AWA tapes to watch some of the older wrestlers. Don't expect all of the pyro and theatrics that you see these days...but as far as individual performances, they put on quite a show. You gotta check out Sting before he went all Crow on us. He and Flair had some truly classic matches. And the Legion of Doom....if you liked them with the WWE...they are ten times better when they were in their prime. Also suggested...Hall and Nash put on a great show as the Outsiders. I enjoyed the whole NWO angle until they split into Red and White.

Ladies and Gentlemen - The Shiek and Bobo Brazil had to be 2 of the greatest ever. Their matches are legendary. Shiek became the only wrestler to wrestle in 7 different decades and finally retired at age 72. I don;t think anyone today could match up to either one of those 2.

Far and away the best pure wrestler of all time was: Paper Gomays...

Other categories:

Best blond bomber (tie): Buddy Rogers, Freddie Blassie and of course, Hulk Hogan

Best terrorist: The Sheik

Best Latino:.... 2nd only to Paper (above): Antonino Rocca, who also started female calisthenics with the abdominal stretch hold.

Best Asian Villain: Kinji Shabuya

Best Boxer who ever ended his career in a wrestling ring: Muhammad Ali, who attended a wrestling match in Chicago, started shouting and threatening and putting on a show and got thrown out of the ring and landed on his head... was taken away in a stretcher and was never the same. The cause of his condition was said to have been an accumulation of punches to the head taken over the years in boxing, but whoever's seen the tape of this knows better...
