The trouble is I don't see anything offered by either side that will lower the cost of health care. We need tort reform to lower the cost of health care. The average OB/GYN pays $300,000 a year for malpractice insurance. Based on a 5 day work week that is about $1,200 a day before they open the doors. But the lawyers in congress sure aren't going to pass tort reform. Doctors are saying that half of their cost of doing business is the paper work to the insurance companies and making sure they do it right so they will get paid. Why doesn't the government try to fix those things? A big government take over of health care isn't going to improve health care or make it less expensive.
I have relatives in Sweden. They say that they are taxed to the point where you can never get ahead. Sure they have free health care. But no matter how hard you work you will just get by.

If this country spent a fraction on saving it's taxpaying citizens lives instead of manufacturing products to kill people, we would be the healthiest country on earth.

Right u are SB... what country would be so insane as to really pull a Pearl Harbor? They would be a glazed parking lot in a nano-second. Instead we invade 4th and5th world countries looking for the Boogi man and blowing trillions of our hard earned bucks. It makes me so pissed !!!!!!!!! All the while 40+ million cannot seek medical help unless an emergency. America is the fastest growing 3rd world country on planet earth.

SB..to send any military into action without the balls to do what is necessary and get out in 72 hrs is just goddamn insane. We have bunkers full of mini nukes waiting for an opportunity. Just make damn certain that those opportunities are worth the flak we will get afterwards.. Remember our saying in Nam, [ Let me win your hearts and minds, or I will burn down your fkg hut]! < American democracy...hahaha

SB..there is no way in hell that 3 tac nukes are going to destroy the earth...christ almighty go read up on the subject. Also the Afgans neve invited us to fk up their country and if we really wanted to get Osama bin Laden we could have done that by calling 1-800-maf-ihit.
The reason were still in that rat hole is because without a war going on, the turds that were elected would not have a reason to justify the stupid shit they do. I love this country and did my bit to keep some sanity going but now, all bets are off and the sooner I get off this sinking ship the beter I will feel. Sometimes you gotta know when to hold then and when to fold them.

SB..I lived in that crapola country in the early 70s and never saw a more lazy bunch of shitheads in my life until I lived in Ireland. They may look somewhat like you and I but that is all. Funny thing is when they come to the states they are hard working people. Aussie women will pay half of the restaurant bill as the men are so damn cheap they have trained them to do that..hahaha.
My pick would be Chile which is like a big ass California without all the kooks. The mountains, the ocean and the lakes, you can't beat it..and the women are kick ass beautiful.

I'll agree that we need some kind of health care reform, but...

You really should try living in a country that has public health care before you jump on this bandwagon.

Over age X and need operation Y? Good luck, everyone in the world gets to cut in front of you in the queue.

I just wonder why people think we can continue on the pathway with health care we are on right now.......

<quote>by starrybug12 : It's time for conservatism to return regardless of the party in control. Liberalism is destroying our country financially and morally. With out change, Freedom will not last.

loooooooooooooooooooooooooooool.....am I on the Rush Limbaugh show today..... that is what separates America and will likely keep us a divided nation.

I think that comment speaks for itself as to where this country is right now........... luckily for all of us, we all get to speak our minds. Sorry if I fail to see where any conservatives were able to make any significant changes while they had the opportunity to do such. The right is out of power right now and the above quote shows how little they like it. If only they could eliminate those pesky liberals, lol.

Health care providers steal from the people, they need to be regulated. Every person should be able to get affordable coverage for themselves and their families......and they cant.................... I just spent 2 years on an ex socialist countries national health care living in eastern Europe, sorry but the problems people speak of dont exist.......people get treated and nobody is dying on the sidewalks waiting to be seen, that is just hilarious when i read that stuff...........just sat with 3 British guys recently, they said its nothing like the right in USA are trying to paint, but they did agree America has better overall health care, we all know that.

as I stated before..........Ventolin inhaler.......Croatia $8.......... United states $100
please explain why..... other than our lack of regulation of prices has the Pharm companies loving us, sadly for me , I am back to the $100 ones, so instead of $24 a month, now I must pay $300 for the same exact thing......

you gotta love the gloom and doom the conservatives pour out, they paint a very ugly picture of this health care thing..... we will see.

It will get passed, it will be like cash for clunkers, the TARP bailout, the AIG bailout, the NEA funding of art and ever other thing that should be market driven that the government tries to meddle in. It will be an epic failure, to the way that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are flops. It is money cost shifting on options based on guarantees that they cant requlate.

This state requires 100% of licensed drivers to be fully insured for operating a vehicle... what percentage do you think are driving without the government required limits (even though there are subsidies out there for the people that are financially challenged and claim they cant afford it) Estimates from the state are 18-21%. That is based on actual pull overs and stops. How many of them are still driving ?.... You cant mandate personal responsibility. And I certainly dont want you in my paycheck attempting to try.
On the upside, I work in HealthCare Finance and Insurance, the new law will be the fat pay raise I need.

I am sick of paying for Shaite that I will never use, never qualify for and still get ilked out of my paycheck. Its called personal responsibility. If you dont feel the need to pay for health insurance and have a major health care event; why is my purpose to pay for your lack of planning. (and really we are all going to get old, fat and die, or end up in an accident prior to that)
Social Security, I will probably never see the age to use it, I lead a reckless lifestyle that I enjoy (motorcycles, skydiving, cave climing, mt hiking, sport car racing)
Medicare, Again probably never gonna be old enough to use it.
Medicaid, I am the wrong demographic for it, and I make too much money for it
Public art, if your art cant merit purchase on its own, I dont feel my tax dollars should go to the NEA to prop up what you claim "artistically significant" f the 1% and its trickledown
Public Education; bill me for the portion I used and get the hell out of my pocket for the rest, cuz I aint breeding a litter of kidlets that are gonna go get state indoctronated
Government Healthcare; give me an opt out, and I will make my own choices.
And if you put the 1/3 of the money you are stealing back into mypaycheck,... guess what? I will probably go stimulate the economy with it.
(go add it up Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Tax, and Federal IRS with-holding are a third;)
There ought be a revolution, there oughta be change, there ought to be the Laissez Faire that the founding fathers build the constitution on.

But in the interim; thanks for your patronage, I will appreciate the uptick in my bank account from federal, state and county mis management, mis appropriation, cost over runs, and legal suits. Bring on the new 'Change'
Have any of you read the bill ? I am betting your legislature hasnt.

Yes, sure. There should be a free market.

I'm stating that free market has problems existing by corporations who own both research and development and manufacturing.

They should be focusing more on quality control, and what they do best. Selling stuff.

The DOD invented the ARPA Net which eventually became what we have now. It was paid for by our taxes, so we use it. Solar energy is largely made possible by NASA as it had to use it for ISS and other things, look how far they pushed efficiency of solar cells. All of this data has to be made public, because it is paid for by taxes. Look at how NASA was the first people to ever use semiconductors made by Intel. Technology used in digital audio was created for voice encryption in war.

I'm saying the money that is used in social programs could very well be used more efficiently in R&D. This goes for healthcare too. If the R&D cost wasn't passed down to you, even the hugest of operations would only cost ten thousand dollars maximum. The insurance companies would go out of business, they wouldn't have to exist. We'd get rid of the corruption. The money wouldn't get wasted. It would generate surplus.

Even the free market option in this whole idealism works better. It would work simply if R&D was simply handled by other companies, with current laws being monopoly laws enforced. That's not to say there should be a public option as well, as much of academia is paid for by our government and government programs in R&D are proven to work. You realize that over 30% of tax money is gone towards sending children to college to become educated, and they want to increase that. What do they do with that information that you paid for? Start corporations with the information they "stole" from your pocketbook from the teachers and academic libraries and become rich. Bill Gates did not come from a wealthy household. He went to Harvard and dropped out. Where do you think his money came from? We don't know because he, like others doesn't have to say. Not even if any of it it was from the government!

Where does Harvard's money come from? With a grade population of under 2,000 per year, each student paying 35,000 with perhaps 1/4 of a rough estimate of that paid for by our own US governmnent in the name of "diversity" totaling just a little over eight hundred million, with a annual budget of 25.9 billion (directly from the harvard website). That is not counting the government funding the school already recieves... The numbers just don't add up and that is only ONE of the institutions. What about MIT or any of the other high education schools in which our gov hires therefore funds?

First thing to do would be to eliminate trade secret legality, as it is so monopoly like it treads on the waters of being downright illegal.
Second thing to do would create public R&D laboratories such as NASA and all science and put it under one organization that is present in all states. Then, shift cost from current welfare programs that are proven not to work in the name of welfare of people, towards the welfare of our country as stated in our constitution of the United States, and make the information public just as other government organizations have to make their information public access.
Third would be to make all tax paid R&D public for free access to private companies to build upon and/or release products made with that public research.
Fifth, would be to regulate outsourcing to other countries, especially in Research and Development. How does East Asia design more than we do, really? We still beat them in education, yet we do largely nothing with it. Why?

One of our justices just stated today that there are too many lawyers in academia and that they should be out "inventing the automobile" and "doing something productive". He's right. We got to be the great nation we are by our industry. It is not the free market of industry that determines wealth or create jobs. It is the act of creating new things and ideas that are more efficient over old things and ideas.

Seeing as how this thread moved off track, I'll just state my opinion. No. I do not want government doing anything with our healthcare. These asshats can't get the spelling on their own names correctly. I believe that this whole healthcare thing has turned more into a "hey look at what our party is doing, we love humanity so much", and from the others it is a chance to shout, "hey socialism...they are destroying us". I don't want our current government even near our healthcare, all they care about is getting a political boost, not doing the job right. Yes our current system is not good either, I believe they need to work more on how these pharmacuitical companies and insurance firms opperate. Maybe regulate all thee inflated prices. Oh, and do something about the billions of dollors illegal immigrants rack up in healthcare cost that we have to flip the bill for. Yup...the sytstem as a whole is screwed up, but what is going on DC right now will only make it worse. Hell these guys need problems, how else can they get people to vote for them? It is kinda hard for them to run for office if they are not pointing fingers at the other guy and saying, "I will fix that".

Immigration.... yeah theres a nasty mess they havent even thought about. So a national health care plan for all residents..... or did you mean citizens. Health care facilities are not prepared to verify citizenship prior to treating an illness, no are the capable of completing eligibility in the current situation. 80 percent of all hospital bills have errors, from coding, to patient data, to billing information. Its a mess.
So one big healthcare plan is gonna fix that? Are you prepared to start reporting and deporting people that access the healthcare system without eligibility? (no they are not) So what does the new legislation solve. Well they are on their 15th itereation of it, so it is up to anybody's guess. But it will mean more beaucracy, more money out of your paycheck, less ease in getting care, and it wont solve the immigrant issue that has plagued health care since the safe haven laws of the 70s.
At 1900 pages, and with an 800 page adendum; you know the legislators havent read it, much less comprehend the impact of it. That nagging feeling at the back of your head, and that sinking feeling in your stomach; symptoms of the new 'Change'

If they shouldn't be here then deport them!!! We have enough rude citizens here ~ we sure as hell don't need any rude non-citizens stinking up the place

They (the government) won't deport them. They need them...look what they are doing to that Sheriff down in Arizona, who is just doing his job protecting the citizens (who elected him) of the county. The government is trying to lay the a smack down on him WWF/WWE style.

Want to know how govt Health Care will work? Look no further than the H1N1 virus administration. You have lines, you have geographic shortages, you have disparity of costs, you select segments of priveleged getting it without any wait (talking Goldman Sacs, not healthcare workers) and you of course have the deaths. 4000 of them. From a SAFE vaccination......

Yep, I want the government administering healthcare.

On the upside, the money I invested in Tamiflu back in march is paying dividends in the quad digits. ;)

There's only one reason there's ANY debate on this issue in the U.S.A.

Polling consistently, overwhelmingly shows ALL Americans heavily in favour of government health care. In fact, most want a single-payer, universal system.

But health insurers and drug companies (who now own all but one HMo and non-religious hospital chain the country) have been flocking to their representative and senate offices pledging to pour their unlimited bank accounts (which come out of Americans' pockets every bit as much as tax dollars do) to defeat them with smear ads in their next election. Americans need to tell their legislators that they will remember AND SUPPORT those who support health care, and VOTE OUT those who chicken out.

I live in a country with government, single-payer, universal health care. It isn't perfect - mostly because of the constant campaigns by US drug companies against it - but the reality is that the only Canucks mad about health care are the richest and nastiest, who lie up awake at night worrying that one single dollar of theirs might go to helping anyone EXCEPT protecting them from poor people.

Coming from you, someone who lives with universal health care, I appreciate your input
