Will there be snow for the Olympics?Page 2 of 5    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

I alone can't change something it seriously isn't worth griping over

RESIGNATION

a sign of the times
and much of the reasons why this and many other countries are now mostly ruled by multinational corporations ....

like Tigress I too wonder how the games actually got here....suppose there was a lot of back room divvying up the booty going on and then we were all told every one loves the games....how can one oppose what every one else apparently wants...and people are sheep (gawd is thy Sheppard, who's been sleeping for a long time) so every one follows the first silly ewe or ram who starts to run....

well, we can't change the weather aside from creating global warming...
and the games will go on either way and whatever the costs we pay.

6 billion dollars.
I can think of 6 billion other things (okay, obviously an exaggeration) that this money could have, should have gone.

Oh, but wait - we don't HAVE money for more this or thats. But we have 6 billion for essentially a 2 week party (and I say 2 weeks because the majority of sh*t happens for the Olympics and not the paralympics) for the rich and privileged.

What a colossal waste of time, money, and resources while our infrastructure as a province fails.

As for who would benefit from 20C weather? Well, me for one. I'd like the sunshine and the heat. But generally - no one. Can't think of anyone benefiting from the olympics either except the people who will be attending parties that we pay for.

I have never supported the Olympics; ever and I was, I believe, only 18 or 19 when we were burdened with them.

Yea, I can think of A LOT of other things that 6 billion dollars of previously nonexistent money could have went towards other than.. this.

I'm someone who might lose a job because the gov't 'needs to save money' oh yeah- I'm thrilled with Victoria &VANOC I'm not against the Olympics- when they're organised a lot better, and not made up as it goes along.

I hope there is snow.

We are, whether some like it or not, hosting a world event. I feel rather personal about the world coming to our stunning province and there not being enough snow to go around.

now they they have that snow hardener stuff huh. the guys on cknw were calling it the snow viagra. It'll be a last resort chemical to be used the day-of if neccessary to reduce environmental harm.
If they do use it, i smell trouble brewing.

Whistler has had just over a foot in the last seven days...and a base of nearly 10 feet.
They should have no problems.

Cypress also got a foot in the last week, and has a base of nearly 5 feet.
Although....they are calling for rain on most of the mountain this weekend.

Snow viagra? NaCL.

Why would you posters wish for no snow? Retaliation?
You have gone on about all this expense to host the Games,
yet you don't mind adding on extra costs with your wish/curse?
...as in machines/operators, labour ..etc..needed to move snow down,
hay bales, etc.....
You should have wished for snow. Nature supplies it for free.

Go for the gold!

I'm not really into winter sports much. I'm an American born naturalized Canadian citizen so I got a bad attitude there anyway. I been back up here since 2002.

I sure am enjoying this warm weather! Remember this time last year?! Since I have to work out of doors a lot.

No problems! No worries! Snow or no snow it is going to happen!

Oh, yeah. To answer the question: no snow.

I need some kittens.

Go for the gold!

Today VANOC advised to expect security screening at events to require three (3) hours and folks should come early.

A huge network of security cameras has been installed in Vancouver and event venues, complete with permanent monitoring/control facilities.

Officials are saying the cameras are only for the Olympics.

Yes, I think there will be snow for the Olympics and afterwards too, but I'm not referring to white crystalline stuff that falls from clouds.

Its a "Snow job"

Goodbye borders....welcome to the Amero $

We've been snowed under for years....now that the U.S. Supreme Court has officially sanctioned the Presidency to the highest bidder, corporate influence is now legitimized...

In regards to torch runners....did you know that submissions are sent to the sponsor, who then approves/disapproves of the application, and decides who will bear the torch.

Who else but Coke a Cola....a manufacturer of beverages that have no nutritional qualities whatsoever.

McDonald's is another official supplier...of none other that the three basic food groups....fat, sugar and salt....

Typical diet for many...serious athletes cringe at the thought...

Go figure....

I totally agree with JustSimplyMe. And you can also be sure that if we weren't hosting these games that the money paying for it sure as heck would be going towards health care or other things that others think it would be spent on if the games were being hosted in some other country.

No one can say that if the money spent on the games would be spent on heath care or other needy places.

Just like JustSimplyMe said, if these games were being held in any other country, many of us would be chanting: "Go Canada Go!"

P.S. I'm no weather pro, but after doing some investigations and looking at present and future weather models. IF the predicted actic air arrives in the next week and a half there will be snow on those coastal mountains. Too little too late....maybe but I for one think it can still happen.

while on the way to surrey from hope today- I saw some of the dumptrucks loaded with snow heading back to cypress- going way over the speed limit.
I hope it does snow up there- apparently though, the money they had set aside for snow clearing is for just the opposite now

I do not care one whit. I think the Olympics are a huge waste to money. That money would be better spent on mental health/health care and the homeless.

I find it amusing the Trucks and Transfers that they are using to move the stuff from Manning.I know how to move earth(or snow) and there are much more productive ways to do so. More than likely they (vanoc????) were able to get the owner/operaters to lower their rate because of the lack of work out there,,,and the drivers can feel good about actually working. They'll be a little peeved next month when they have to pay for their fuel bills thou.

I'm also wondering how much loss of product results from the amount of time on the highway???? I spent last Sunday on the Squamish River and I can't remember a warmer last day of January. Only snow I saw was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy up,,,,and just on the peaks.

Apparently they are using the snow from Manning because it is 'pristine' and will look good on camera. Do you want to ask the owner operators to cut their rate?
Anyway- why not send it by train?

150 truckloads @$10,000/load.

They are also using the 2nd largest helicopter in the world to transport snow....
at $10,000 an hour!

Why they used Cypress is beyond me...it makes much more logical sense to have all the snow sports at Whistler/Blackcomb.

Not to metion the fact that they didn't/don't need to go so dang far away to get it. $10,000 per load/per hour is just (excuse the pun) Hwy robbery.

But like I mentioned before, if the games were not here, the government would NOT be spending it on other things like health Care and so many of the other ideas that others have mentioned.

Yes OP, there will be snow for the Olympics. A few cm have fallen this week that will add to the pretiness of the other snows being shipped in. However, I also still believe that the natural stuff will also fall throughout the three weeks during the games.

(However, I'm not a Pro at this, just a lover of weather predictions.)

They may not have snow,,,,but from my fishing experince yesterday I can tell ya they DO HAVE enough coppers out there,,,,and at least a couple of them are "imports". Silly buggers tried to slow down a crazy Irishmen on the highway early yesterday morn. Took them close to 45 minutes that I actually was going fishing that early in the morn and I wasn't trying to figure a way to sneak over a mountain to get into the games before the opening ceremonies.

They actually turned out to have a sense of humour, but still trying to figure out how nuts I really am. What I go thru for to wet a fly.

$10,000 per load? You're either misinformed or bullshitting, no way is it 10 grand per load.

No doubt, but after the last few winters of good snow conditions they took the gamble. Oh well, I'm sure the events will be fun to watch.

Two days ago, organizers began trucking in snow to Cypress from Manning Park -- almost 260 kilometres away.

"They want as pure as snow as possible and that's where these trucks are taking it. Yesterday there was 34. Today there's I guess 44," Barry Platt of Emil Anderson Maintenance told CTV News.

Once complete, 150 truckloads of snow will have been transported to Cypress at an estimated cost of $150,000.

The Olympic Torch was borne through my city today ~ Abbotsford ~
and the event was simply awesome.

Whistler has plenty of snow, no worries there, but I fervently hope
there will be more of it falling for Cypress. Some of the practice runs
have already had to be re-scheduled there to ensure good conditions
for the first of the events for Cypress.

Go Canada! Go for the Gold!
